Heard from a friend at Disney+ that there are multiple levels of freakout internally, both from internal dissatisfaction, concerns about subscription cancelations, and of course the big one: concern about a boycott spilling over into parks and cruises.
The Twitter left are now talking about boycotting Disney over Fallon’s canceling. All rather funny.
It's not funny; it's an appalling fracturing of society which means that people will be ever more esconsced in their bubbles.
Don’t disagree, but the left have bought this on themselves with their reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and their decade of supporting cancel culture they now think is abhorrent when it gets one of their own.
The moment you choose a side to blame, then you become part of the problem.
Well one side has spent the last week holding silent vigils and prayers, and the other side has spent the last week encouraging more violence. Those trying to “Both Sides” this are the problem.
When one side is calling for freedom of speech, and the other side is shooting dead the guy wanting to have a debate…
Currently, Reform lead Labour by 31% to 21%, with the Greens on 10%.
I can see half that Green vote going over to Labour, on polling day, but I can't see any reason why the Reform vote will shift back to the Conservatives.

Ash Sarkar @AyoCaesar · 5h Team Zarah seems to have launched a unilateral membership operation (where they get to keep the data). Team Jeremy has denounced it. It's difficult (but not impossible) to see how Your Party continues with both leaders.
The big winner? Keir Starmer... followed by Zack Polanski.
Corbyn will be the winner. He has the other 4 independent MPs on his side and he has the name recognition (on the previous thread 61% didn't know about her)
More importantly, whilst Gaza and Israel are important to Corbyn, they're not *everything* to him. Whilst for Zarah, it seems the most important issue that faces her constituents.
The “Dead Lakes of Willandra” - in NSW, Australia, is the site of the world’s earliest ritual cremations, plus 40,000-year-old burials, bones, middens. And some truly perplexing hominid remains that possibly confound all of what we *know* about human prehistory
When I went there, the only visitor in days, I found a mineralised oyster shell, shucked by ancient human hands maybe 30,000 years ago
Now it’s resting in a 1970s Murano glass geode bowl, after a long journey to Camden, London, England

LEFT THEN: That's outrageous! De-platform now! LEFT NOW: No, not our guy! FREE SPEECH!
RIGHT THEN: First amendment is sacrosanct! Suck it up, snowflakes! RIGHT NOW: That's outrageous! Cancel time!
Yes, there are double standards all round, but at least the American Left had the good grace not to send sodding JD Vance over to us to pile on the free-speech pieties.
Relatedly, there’s an article in the most recent Private Eye which is clearly stenography for Helen Lewis but contains some points of interest nonetheless. The topic was the recent police interest in Graham Linehan & what’s driving those investigations / prosecutions. According to her, these are all happening because one or two trans rights activists have discovered that they can browbeat the police into investigating & prosecuting social media statements by threatening them with judicial reviews of their decisions if they fail to investigate or subsequently drop the case as being not of public interest.
If activists of all stripes have discovered this trick it might well explain why the police seem to be perpetually chasing after hot button topics whilst ignoring bread & butter policing - especially if the prospect of a judicial review weighs heavily on an officer’s career prospects (which it well might, although I have no insight here).

The odd part of this is why are the police so complicit in it? A little bit more common sense would not go amiss.
As soon as the next content they want to consume is released they'll all be back. These kinds of things rarely work. Look at American Eagle, their share price is up 80% since the "controversial" Sydney Sweeney ad and subsequent "boycott" of them by the same type of people. They don't represent the mass market in any sense and never have.
Though I have to say, anything that causes Disney to fail is good with me. Loathsome company.

Meanwhile it is reported that Lucy Powell was nominated for deputy leader by Ed Miliband against express orders from Starmer.
FIGHT !!!
Can you imagine it? "Hell Yeah I'm tough" vs The Smasher of the Gangs. It'll make Mark Darcy vs Daniel Cleaver look like a bare knuckle brawl next to a fire of burning goodyears
Just 19 newly built private homes were sold across the whole of London in May according to the latest data from the Land Registry. In the latest sign of the capital’s housing crisis under Sir Sadiq Khan, the monthly sales figures were the lowest on record. They were down from 23 sales in April and reflected a 95pc drop compared to May in 2024 when 352 flats and houses were sold.
At the same time, planning approvals in the capital have fallen by 2pc in the 12 months to June – the lowest total since records began in 2006. Figures from the Greater London Authority revealed last month that construction started on just 347 affordable homes between April and June this year.

This is all very stupid. But at least boycotts are individuals making decisions, and not the government banning or cancelling things.
Target has been going that way for ages though. It's a dying business model, one that's basically dead in the UK already.
Read the article.
"He pledged to increase black employee representation by 20% and committed to spend over $2 billion with Black owned businesses. He said he would create a program based on Target Accelerators, called Forward Founders, for early-stage start-ups led by Black entrepreneurs to help them develop, test and scale products so one day they could be in Target, and Cornell touted the fact that Target has over 50 Black-owned and Black-founded brands on their shelves in-store and online, before stating he wanted to do more.
The result: In 2021, comparable sales grew by 12.7%, on top of record growth in 2020. The company and brand were thriving. Target’s market value soared to $129 billion."

Not gonna lie.
I haven't laughed this much because of politics since the SNP motorhome story.

O/T but interesting - some Usonian firm trying to bring ekranoplans (or at least surface effect craft) to Scottish island ferry routes.
Obvious issue: will not replace cargo routes.
Another obvioujs issue: operation will depend very much on sea state, for takeoff and landing. (I did wonder a little if the firm is thinking West Indies and not quite realising the local weather?)
Unless it's a fine weather operation to cream off the tourist revenue?

No, everyone saw growth in 2021 because of COVID. It was an industry wide phenomenon that people were sitting at home bored with nothing to do but shop then after people had better things to do with their disposable income the whole industry came crashing back to earth.
Anyone who is trying to associate the gigantic COVID boom with any specific policy doesn't know the industry dynamics at all. In the post COVID period every company ran their models and it transpired that the 2020 and 2021 results were almost entirely market driven, rather than by anything management or marketing divisions had done. Loads of clients I was advising around 2022 and 2023 found that they had to spend double the money on acquisition just to stand still after that because the attrition rate post-COVID was so high.
US retail. A big thing that has happened past 2-3 years Walmart have invested massively in their e-commerce business, so for American consumers for everyday items you now have Amazon and Walmart. Walmaet offer their own stuff and exist as a marketplace like Amazon. And the advantage with Walmart is you have a physical store to pick up / return if you want
MacCALLUM: Your critics say this crackdown is a crackdown on free speech.
TRUMP: I watch your show and I watch others and I see people saying things -- they're crazy. These people are crazed lunatics. Maybe they're drugged out.

Yup, anyone who is trying to say that target succeeded or failed due to anything they did specifically really doesn't get the market dynamics in the US. They've been a dying business for a long time that got a lifeline from COVID.
On President Trump's first day in office, he signed an executive order prohibiting any federal employee from pressuring private companies to censor in ways that "advanced the Government's preferred narrative about significant matters of public debate."

I think we are back to the Not Proven conversation.
It is claimed to be able to "fly over 13ft waves", which is Sea State 5. And 5 ft waves as a hydrofoil.
I'd plump that that will be more like Sea State 4 for caution and safety.
How does that compare with the Highlands and Islands?
(It looks like a better call than say the Orkneys and Shetlands or the North Sea, but - as you say - even so. Hawaii had the same concerns, says Claude.)
I wish them every success.
It should be quite simple. After the startling fiasco that was Glen Sannox, they should only buy utterly tried-and-tested technology. If a company wants 'trials', then they should pay the Scottish government to be part of the trials. I fear the opposite will happen, and this new company will gets oodles of taxpayer chase to 'perfect' their technology.
It will probably be cheaper to connect every island in Shetland and Orkney and the Western Isles by tunnel and then link the Hebrides and Orkney to the mainland...
Having been in the Faroes a few months ago, where all but one of the major islands are now linked by such tunnels, I am not even joking.

Some pretty good Kdrama, too.
Contra the Kimmel affair, they happily just started airing Tempest, which opens with a (Korean) politician assassinated with a shot to the neck.
It's now going full makjang, with the US planning a first strike on N Korea, and our delightful lead discovering her dead husband had a secret second family.
(On which note: which came first, Trump pushing the birther narrative, or Obama doing the Trump mic drop moment?)
I checked: Trump started tweeting about Obama actually being born in Kenya in Mach 2011, and the Obama 'mic drop' was on April 30, 2011 a few days after he'd released his birth certificate in response.

The last two times I've been to Arran they've put me on the Alfred; the useless piece of crap won't even do me a Mac'n'cheese. I nearly fainted on the cycle through to Troon station.

I think the only constantly on one we have is Netflix. Otherwise we'll generally wait for a few shows we like on Disney or Apple to get a month at a time. We also have Amazon permanently but I get it as part of my mobile contract and have done for the last decade or so, don't really watch a lot on it though, it's mostly for the delivery.

Your central conceit seems to be that the rather large (and IMO slightly silly) boycott against Target is irrelevant. I'm far from convinced it is; but it's also odd that people on your side of this debate think that their boycotts are 100% massively successful.
Edit: as ever with these things, causes are likely to be multi-factorial, and we will only be able to ascertain effectiveness of boycotts - and the way businesses react to the boycotts - after a number of years. even then, splitting causes and effects may be rather difficult.
I feel like the media companies are making a massive mistake with each having their own streaming service. Its the sort of fragmentation that everybody hated cable for and leads to people chopping / changing subs and I bet use of illegal streaming sites is well up.
Spotify / Apple Music coin it in because once you have subscribed to them, there is absolutely no reason to look elsewhere and basically nobody pirates music these days.
Netflix was that place, but he legacy companies rather than follow the music biz, decided they would fragment the market again.

Also important to keep one's mac and cheese down (I recall especially the superannuated minesweeper LOch Arkaig that did the Small Isles run in the late 70s and sprang a leak and foundered at its moorings in Mallaig one night; it must have had a very round-bottomed bilge). Coincidentally, I have been reading an account of the last flying boat services across the Empire routes. One thing that stands out is the unexpectedly rough take-off, at least - like driving over a washboard. I 've no idea what ekranoplans are like for airsickness (intuitively the ground effect should damp out vertical excursions, but if the 'ground' is goin g up and down itself ...).

On the other (Christopher Morris The Day Today voice), God I wish it wasn't.

Preparations are underway to mark the occasion on Monday, with Head of Palestinian Mission to the UK Husam Zumlot due to oversee a flag-raising ceremony in London
Most of the early 'Your Party' rumblings have been petty, and a bit wishful from opponents, but this latest one does look more serious.
I imagine something will still emerge, there's enough desire for it, but it does look like the Corbyn ego (which his acolytes pretend doesn't exist because he is seemingly meek) is partly at play.

It's a real shame as there's some things I wouldn't mind watching on Netflix, but not enough to shell out for more subscriptions. There's more than enough to watch on BBC/Free-to-air and Prime - the one I do sub to.
Heck, I might even pay a little for individual shows. But as with all media channels, there's a heck of a lot of stuff that doesn't appeal to me - even if it appeals to others.

I've been saying for years that Corbyn was a dodgy bugger and a closet right wing activist.

Change UK failing to hold on to even their "most calamitously rubbish political party" title.
I admired their attempt at least, and that it even included a range of people, even if there was not really a space for them and the demise was probably inevitable. And I even admire Corbyn, the Gaza bros, and Sultana, for their ongoing effort.
It ain't easy, but they also have to learn that political and personal skills are needed, as well as luck, and that isn't the same as arranging rallies and committees. A bumpy ride awaits even if successful.
EXC: UK is planning to announce on Sunday it will recognise a Palestinian state, ahead of formal declaration on Monday at UN
Preparations are underway to mark the occasion on Monday, with Head of Palestinian Mission to the UK Husam Zumlot due to oversee a flag-raising ceremony in London

I've been saying for years that Corbyn was a dodgy bugger and a closet right wing activist.

"The other side" ? That's pernicious bullshit.
From his last few days in office on, Mike Pence has continued to gain stature.

There's much to dislike about him still, I have no doubt, but at least at the end, when tested, he held firm to some of his principles. Very few others have.
That’s because in the time of crisis he sought counsel from that Sage and New Founder of America…. Dan Quayle
Yes, kids. In this timeline Dan Quayle is the wise old statesman.
‘LOST’ creator Damon Lindelof pledges not to work with @Disney unless Kimmel is reinstated, and Matt Belloni says other Hollywood talent will likely soon do the same.
This is bad for Starmer. The radical left and the British Muslim brotherhood are a greater threat as two separate but internally united blocks than one big squabbling one.

Its interesting when Gina Carano got shit canned by Disney, I think Bill Burr was the only person who stood up for her.
They do tend to overreact a lot of the time. Didn't they sack James Gunn for historic bad taste jokes, and only brought him back reluctantly (for the last good Marvel film)?

There are plenty of other examples where they don't sack people who are errhhh well erhhh....Dan Schneider....because they are making them so much money.
Remember these people with incredible moral principles backed Danny Masterson with letters of support to the court to try and minimise his punishment.
I look forward to hearing Farages view of the attack on free speech in the USA ! I don’t ever remember the Dems when they held the WH trying to muzzle the media , one can only imagine the furore if the Dems tried to get people fired from Fox News and threatened their broadcasting licence .
This is not a good idea, from the guy who gave it away.

so many people are canceling HULU that their site is crashing

But then again, so is what precipitated it.
Though I have to say, anything that causes Disney to fail is good with me. Loathsome company.

This is all very stupid. But at least boycotts are individuals making decisions, and not the government banning or cancelling things.
When Steve Martin and Martin Short put out new work, you subscribe. I'm not watching cartoons!
I haven't laughed this much because of politics since the SNP motorhome story.

They have eaten a lot of businesses lunch.
MacCALLUM: Your critics say this crackdown is a crackdown on free speech.

On President Trump's first day in office, he signed an executive order prohibiting any federal employee from pressuring private companies to censor in ways that "advanced the Government's preferred narrative about significant matters of public debate."

(On which note: which came first, Trump pushing the birther narrative, or Obama doing the Trump mic drop moment?)
Having been in the Faroes a few months ago, where all but one of the major islands are now linked by such tunnels, I am not even joking.
Contra the Kimmel affair, they happily just started airing Tempest, which opens with a (Korean) politician assassinated with a shot to the neck.
It's now going full makjang, with the US planning a first strike on N Korea, and our delightful lead discovering her dead husband had a secret second family.
The second time I remembered and stocked up at the excellent Woolley's.
Edit: the hybrid ferries (Raasay, Lochranza IIRC) are excellent.

I know revenue isn't everything. So let's look at earnings:
https://www.statista.com/statistics/256008/net-earnings-of-target-in-north-america/
Yep. It's been dying for a long time...

Spotify / Apple Music coin it in because once you have subscribed to them, there is absolutely no reason to look elsewhere and basically nobody pirates music these days.
Netflix was that place, but he legacy companies rather than follow the music biz, decided they would fragment the market again.

I imagine something will still emerge, there's enough desire for it, but it does look like the Corbyn ego (which his acolytes pretend doesn't exist because he is seemingly meek) is partly at play.
Heck, I might even pay a little for individual shows. But as with all media channels, there's a heck of a lot of stuff that doesn't appeal to me - even if it appeals to others.
Or is that too obvious a question?
