If ever. The F35 purchase, and the carriers which justified it, were a dreadful decision for UK defence capacity.
Now we're going to be forced to spend more billions on US kit to make the F35B semi-useful.
During the Brexit negotiations I mooted the idea of trying to break the deadlock by giving the EU one of those carriers as the EU Navy flagship. A symbolical sacrifice and act of penance to soothe the savage breast. All we'd have lost is a white elephant, and they could have felt good by hanging it with star spangled bunting.
Certainly not your daftest idea. But little point is giving one; both would have made sense.

No point really, if that's any consolation. The RN really need two to be sure of having at least one in use eg when the other has broken down and is being rebuilt sorry is under planned maintenance. Sure, the matelots, roof rats and plane jockeys have training courses, self-maintenance, leave, etc. as well, but it does leave a big gap in coverage if there is one only.
The Times is told that both the Foreign Office and Number 10 were aware of the Bloomberg front up message on Tuesday morning
Government sources say that Starmer was not **aware** of the messages when he spoke at PMQs. This has yet to be confirmed on the record by No 10
This is the best timetable we've been able to pull together from multiple sources in government
I'm told that there are several different timelines circulating in government which are still being worked on
Number 10 and the foreign office will now come under mounting pressure to disclose exactly what it knew, and more importantly who knew, about the emails
It comes down to Mandelson should not have been appointed in the first place

With his shady background and history of fibbing, Mandy could be considered Labour's Boris; strange then that Sir Keir, who made piety, honesty, character and so on the cornerstone of his sanctimonious assaults on Johnson, employed Mandelson. Well, it would be strange if you hadn't noticed Starmer has always been a hypocritical snide, the political equivalent of a bent copper.

The French rely heavily on others when their one carrier is down for maintenance. IIRC they are reliant on the US Navy for landing training.

To be fair ISTR that quite a lot of people thought it was a good idea at the time.

It's infuriating. I get letters like that, and worse, regularly. If a private individual behaved like this they're rightly be open to a charge of demanding money with menaces.
I suspect there are lots of older and vulnerable people paying for licences they don't need because of these risible threats.
I once logged into Iplayer when I was staying over at someone else's licensed address, for the first time since I'd last had a licence a decade or so before. I got some threatening emails afterwards from TV Licensing and I wrote back to them, told them I was at someone else's licensed address and could they provide me with the IP address by way of evidence. They wrote a really weird but very carefully worded email that still asked me to pay, didn't mention at all that I didn't have to, but also told me that they couldn't provide the IP address due to data protection as it was not my IP address. It was an absolute work of art by whatever poor sod has the job of responding to emails. I'd love to see their guidance.

Yes, we could have played hard to get and then given both. They're both a bloody millstone. But in the context of giving the EU a glittering prize, quite fitting. And good for them discouraging others to leave - "You can leave but only if you give us two shiny aircraft carriers".

Not in my opinion, but since he was appointed with all that history behind him, then SKS should have stuck to his guns and said this last lot of 'revelations' was just more of the same & he's still the man for the job.
The Guardian aerial footage of Tommy’s rally is startling It’s huge. Much bigger than I expected TBF
Met police estimates around 110,000
These things are always gamed and argued, so I’ve no firm idea
But it looks to me that it easily as big as biggest Palestine marches, which were estimated at 200-300,000. But I’ve had a long day and might be misremembering

I can’t believe that Starmer, knowing he would inevitably be asked at PMQs, didn’t get in the FO people and his own team and demand to know everything they know that is possibly coming out later as referred to by Mandy so he could be certain about defending him strongly.
So the denials of knowledge are either showing Starmer to be a liar or a cretin.

Which part of it is bullshit?
I just went to the /notv link and haven't had a letter since.
In my experience they'll start messaging you again about 11 months after your declaration of notv. Maybe less. They need to make sure (and keep making sure) you're really really not watching anything they can tax you for.
Out of curiosity, have any PBers been on a protest march?
Once, back, in the mid-90s, against a Tory threat to privatise Scottish Water. Tommy Sheridan led the march. I bought his book and he autographed it. Since then, I decided that when I am benevolent dictator of this country I will totally ignore protest marches, so I don't see the point of participating myself any more.
I went to a school full of farmers children who were all taken out of school for the Countryside Alliance march. One of them snidely asked me what I did during the march and I told them I'd been breaking into farms. Didn't make me very popular.
I know a number of people who have been on a demo exactly once. For one group it was the Countryside Alliance over fox hunting. The other group was against going to war with Iraq.
IMHO both groups were right. Both drew large numbers from well outside the usual suspects.
I have been on a number of protest marches over the years. Much like the protests that you describe, I can't recall any of them changing the policy we were protesting.
Off thread and of no consequence, but my daughter was in an unusually well-refereed junior football match today. Not only was the referee prepared ro play a few seconds advantage before awarding a free kick - as they should, but even at senior level never appear to do - but he also sent off the home coach for loudly calling him a 'piece of shit'. I was quite impressed.

If anyone ever did come to the door to check what I'm watching I'm pretty sure I'd just tell them to bugger off, though given some people are convicted I assume they do go to people's houses sometimes so its not an empty threat. How they get any evidence, unless they can see the TV from outside the house, is beyond me.
Lamont: We have something called Revolution Wind. It’s 80% complete and will likely power 300,000 to 400,000 homes by this time next year. It will dramatically bring down costs because it reduces those peak pricing times during very hot days in August or very cold days in January. We were almost done — and then, at the very last moment, Trump pulled the plug on it. Happy Labor Day: 500 of you are laid off. It’s the exact opposite of everything they had assured us up until then. https://x.com/Acyn/status/1966634280240771465

Standard PB assumption, though, is that everyone is and can afford to be online and au fait with online stuff. By definition, else we wouldn't be here. But that isn't true of a lot of people.
That letter does not give a postal or a telephone option for this wonderful ****ing link. By that reason alone - quite apart from the other things - it is harassment.

Sounds like the employers f***ed up. Construction is not permissible under the waiver program. Its for very limited activities like negotiating contracts.
Whatever the number, I wish Tommy Robinson and his band of fascists would d f*ck off out of London. I had the misfortune to run into some of this trash with my young son on the tube this afternoon. Not pleasant!
People need to understand why many South Koreans view what happened in Georgia as a betrayal.
In the past, South Korea hedged between the U.S. and China (U.S. for security, China for economy). But at a certain point, Seoul stopped hedging, and it chose a side. It chose the U.S... https://x.com/koreanforeigner/status/1966730198805614868

It doesn’t look an unreasonable guess based upon the footage. Whether 200-500k should be considered a small protest or a large one, rather depends on your expectations I suppose. But it’s an odd and probably counter productive reaction to put your fingers in your ears and pretend it didn’t happen.

Apparently not, their base assumption is that every person alive consumes some type of product that they can charge for. I make a point of never watching anything live at all, not even live-streams from YouTubers. And I actually don't know what these other things are about catch-up or iPlayer or whatever.
I think they try to make you choose one of their list just to get through the /notv thing, so they can say "Aha! so you do watch something we can charge for!"

I had a visit once! So they do exist.
Gadfly a place not far from you but well known to you and over a mile from the paved lane which leads to the public highway also used to get letters every month. There was no-one living there since 1994 I think. Thus the letters were delivered to me as owner. Once I was doing up the cattle in the adjoining barn and this couple appropriately dressed for ball-room dancing were in front of the remains of the house. The day was less than clement. After accusing me of allowing my cattle to harrass THEM - I had let the cattle out to water at the trough as I did every day, they then started to accuse me of having a TV in the shell of the house. Admittedly there were the remains of an old type aerial in pieces on the floor.
Heard later the "couple" had enquired of a lived in house by the lane side where ((redacted)) was and had been asked why they wanted to know. Refused to say (confidential) but had TV Licencing all over their vehicle.
Never had a letter since though.
The only other people ever to annoy us at ((redacted)) have been Jehovah's Witnesses who have a similar if equally misguided zeal.

Yes. The days when Tommeh could only summon a few hundred sad hooligans are behind us
If Burnham was to stand in a special bi-election, how would tactical voting play out I wonder. Seems clear it would be a straight shootout between Labour and Reform. Would be instructive on what might happen at the next general wrt tactical voting groups.

It was a fashy supergroup though, Tommeh, Katy Hopkins, Jordan Petersen, Ant Middleton, Lozza Fox and that anti-trans pound shop Marilyn impersonator. Something for everyone of a hard right persuasion.

Some changed the political atmosphere though.
I went to one in Denmark, arriving late (I forget the issue, something left-wing), where someone threw a smoke bomb at the platform, then ran off, pursued by angry protestors. He ran straight towards me and I could have stopped him, but much though I disapproved of his actions I thought there was a risk of murder, so I let him run past.

Bi-elections swing both ways.
Also upset some folk badly, the notion of being able to elect for whatever gender one chooses.
Was wandering round Central London and followed a Greek Cypriot protest against The Turkish invasion of the northern part of the island. Then wandered into a pub.

Met Police estimate around 110,000 attending the Unite the Kingdom rally
That is a very big amti-Starmer rally.
It was led by Tommy Robinson and addressed by Bannon, it was a nationalist right rally not just an anti Starmer rally
Did you go along - sounds right up your street ?
No I did not, I do not even vote Reform left alone for Robinson and Advance but it does show he has a following
All decent conservatives should distance themselves from all thing's Robinson and Reform
So on current polls that is a third of the voters gone then
As I pointed out to you last night, your team need to go in at Farage and the right of Farage with their Doc Martens polished and ready for action. These people are a source of votes to be wrestled back. They are not your friends. You need to call Farage out for who and what he is.
I'm sure you're right. A very illuminating Any Questions today. Many good points were made. It helps when you hear what his critics are saying They weren't being reasonable. He's on balance a man more sinned against than sinning and his crime such as it is is naivety.
All anyone has to do is run through the other potential Prime Ministers and you get that he's someone trying in difficult circumstances to do his best. He's not a crook like Johnson or a fascist like Farage or useless like Corbyn. Unlike what I said earlier I'd like him to have more time.

Kemi needs to be careful not to overdo it. She doesn't want this to become all about her throwing unsubstantiated claims about.
Why on earth should she
This is raw politics and she can claim she took down Mandelson
Do you really think Labour would pussy foitot around this if it was a tory ?
You are my favourite amti-Starmer poster now. It used to be Urquhart but he's not got your doggedness and momentum.
Maybe but as I am fairly immobile, in my 80's, and have Sky on together with a subscription to the Guardian with access to other media I am able to see a story and post it
And before you respond with currygate it wasn't just me on the case and many think Starmer got away with
You are on a roll. Perhaps you could relitigate Currygate. Call the police!
If we had all been smarter, Currygate was very revealing.
Starmer lives precisely within what he believes the rules to be. He doesn’t stop to consider whether something is right or wrong.
Went to watch Demon Slayer with the wife, was difficult to explain to my parents why they had to come over and babysit for the morning/afternoon. "You're going to see what?!"
Great movie though. It's a shame they've split it into 3 parts but judging by the box office I'm not surprised.

Could have been a bit hairy staggering out of the pub fancying a kebab, eyeing up the Turkish kebab shop, then the Greek kebab shop and then seeing the reaction from the crowd whilst weaving between the two options trying to judge who to give your trade to.

That is a very big amti-Starmer rally.
Sky News just now is saying Arsenal winning is the only good news for him recently as he is in a lot of trouble and apparently Badenoch has raised the stakes by saying he has 'lied to the nation', not something she could say in the house
There is an enduring caricature of the PM that he does not know what to think about anything until told by a judge. It’s sticking for good reason. His defence on Mandy is shaping up to be that no one explicitly told him the appointment was not allowed, he doesn’t seem to have stopped to consider whether it was wise.

That's actually a really good observation. Take the whole transgender issue, the PM just said nothing about it until the supreme court ruled that biology/science/XX is fact and everything else is just nonsense under the law and then suddenly the PM lines up behind that side of the argument. I'd never really considered him from that perspective, but it really is the truth. He just doesn't have any method of forming an opinion that hasn't already been defined by the courts or some higher panel/committee.
EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson lived with his transgender partner, sources tell me.
The individual, who is a male transitioning to a female, is fully cooperating with the FBI.
Sources tell me the FBI had texts and other communications between Robinson and the individual that helped FBI authorities solidify that Robinson was indeed the shooter.

Exactly. And perhaps that’s what made him a successful public prosecutor. But it’s rather a problem when your job is the highest authority that defines the law that judges are supposed to enforce. The longer you look, the more you realise how hopelessly unsuited to this job he is. And I expect he’s realised it too but it’s quite hard to dig his way out now.
Now we see the madness of NATO refusing to defend every inch of its airspace. We now have regular, likely soon to be daily, incursions into NATO airspace by Russian weapons. They are not currently seeking to cause damage, but instead to disrupt. Now you have airports shutting down and economic damage. And this will persist. We could have reacted firmly and decisively, but instead we did nothing. And now we have consequences. There is no scenario where Russia would have been offended by NATO defending its airspace from day one. But NATO decided to stick to this holier than thou, turning the other cheek approach, letting Russian weapons fly into NATO territory and pretending it did not matter. It mattered then. It matters now. And we live with the negative consequences. And what is your plan going forward? Now it has escalated past the point of random accidents, or Russia rerouting attacks around air defense. Now it is brazen attacks, and now what? Now the response is vastly more complicated, and with a lot more downside risk. Shooting down wayward Shaheds was easy. Now the problem is very complicated, and costing a lot of money. https://x.com/AndrewPerpetua/status/1966891940584063374

A pretty shameful march. 100,000 fascists on the streets of London. Back to the days of Powell. If the Scots have any sense they'll have another go at independance.
There is something odd about this Mandelson/Epstein business. If Bloomberg has a cache of 18,000 emails from Epstein, why did they run with Mandelson rather than any prominent American figures? Why no Americans alongside Mandelson?

That would also fit in with the absence of any political philosophy with this government.

I’m not sure many US companies are brave enough to risk the wrath of Donald.
I remember when Tommeh brought his scumbag EDL to my city. Much of it shut down and closed early, and I was on call. I wandered into town to see it for myself. There was a small Unite Against Facism counter demonstration.
It was a weird and threatening atmosphere as the EDL broke through into the sidestreets and rampaged through the city chanting racist slogans and intimidating the few people out on the streets, banging on the windows of shops with people trapped inside. Fortunately there were few casualties.

All anyone has to do is run through the other potential Prime Ministers and you get that he's someone trying in difficult circumstances to do his best. He's not a crook like Johnson or a fascist like Farage or useless like Corbyn. Unlike what I said earlier I'd like him to have more time.
Starmer lives precisely within what he believes the rules to be. He doesn’t stop to consider whether something is right or wrong.
Great movie though. It's a shame they've split it into 3 parts but judging by the box office I'm not surprised.
