Looking, the Telegraph are trying to make it only about tube drivers when the Unions are talking more about other staff too, who perhaps earn half.
But I'm not wasting time - the Telegraph can sit on a wrought iron fence spike and swivel.
I have 2kg of sloes to make into gin and jam.
It's been chucking it down here, too - sadly before I got back home.
Jacob Rees Mogg recounted a story about a corpse being run over three times, despite these 'drivers' in their 'overseeing role'. Useless overpaid idlers. Sack the lot of them.
You don’t live anywhere near London what has it got to do with you
People can't have opinions on the capital unless they live there?
I suppose if you're demanding that an entire workforce be sacked, which will affect millions of people other than you...
But that's the idea being a bad one, regardless of whether he would be affected or not, so it doesn't matter. I bet we could find someone who does live in London who has the same opinion, would that make it a better one?
Personally I'm not affected so I don't really have a view on it, but I think cases where personal impact actually diminished the weight (or lack thereof) of a view would be pretty rare and localised - particularly ones involving the most important city on these islands which most people will interact with at least on rare occasions.
I do get an increasing sense of Londoners not being too happy about non-Londoners talking about it. Does Gallowgate actually live there?
I have to say after all the recent talk of it going to the dogs I was quite pleased with the few days I recently spent in London. Maybe I was just in the right places.

I asked what it had to do with him
Maybe he travels there a lot, IDK, maybe he has family there, maybe it's just an ideological stance without being affected, but I don't see the point of the question unless to imply a view is worth less unless personally impacted.
Sometimes the opposite can even be true, people not directly connected might be able to take a more disspassionate view of events. Not saying that's the case here, but it's politics, it doesn't have to have anything to do with us to have thoughts.
Or maybe he just likes to form rabid opinions on things he knows very little about like normal
Certainly a possibility, but it'd be awfully dull if we restricted ourselves to only talking about things we know about - we'll never make a career as a political pundit that way.
Seems odd though. The place was already under construction. You wouldn't think a research centre would be that sensitive to the additional employment costs from National Insurance increases. So what changed?
It said the decision stemmed from a company evaluation of its research capabilities "and reflects the challenges of the UK not making meaningful progress towards addressing the lack of investment in the life science industry and the overall undervaluation of innovative medicines and vaccines by successive UK governments".
It said it would also close down its activities in two London labs by the end of the year, leading to 125 job losses.
The Merck statement confirmed news first reported by The Financial Times. The daily quoted the company as saying: "Simply put, the UK is not internationally competitive."
Which I'm not sure tells us much. Could it be a US company feeling the need to put more money in the US to placate the tangerine toddler?
(In a way though, it goes back to the problem when the UK runs on foreign investment, because we'd rather put the money into housing. Nice to get FDI, but their interests are not always our interests.)

I wonder if "and the overall undervaluation of innovative medicines and vaccines by successive UK governments"." might refer to the cheaper deals for drugs that the NHS often gets?
Yup, the murder of the Ukrainian girl has definitely breached social media. Loads of usually non-political people and large accounts are posting about it on Instagram and the comments are all pretty universal that the judge who let him walk needs to be held accountable for that decision as well as anger that the murder isn't getting mainstream coverage in the US.
Let's see how it trends but this feels like a lightning rod for racial tension in the US and crime, safety for women and the glib responses (hurt durr, president grab em by the p****) from media types on the latter are really, really hurting the left.
What's the best response to something you feel is intended to stoke up racial hatred?
(I agree that glibness isn't)
Stay quiet. Accept that this was a horrible crime and shut the fuck up, don't try and equivocate or point fingers at anyone other than the guilty party and his enablers in the justice system.
But what about the people trying to stoke a race war off the back of it? They surely have to be called out for this. You can't give that sort of shit a free pass. It would be spineless.
The people who tried to stoke a race war off the back of George Floyd got a free pass.
Revenge for BLM? Yes, that's my sense of it.
There'll be similar for 'metoo' coming along shortly, I expect.
That's pretty much it. BLM stemmed from the kernel of a reasonable wider societal point but was a stupid reaction to a single event which denied any degree of nuance. This would exactly the same.
The point was that the murder of George Floyd was not a one off, but part of a larger pattern. It was just the one that was caught on camera. And the murder of Floyd was by a policeman, the people who are meant to protect the public.
Zarutska's death is a tragic event, but less obviously a failing of the whole system, although MAGA want to present it as such. MAGA are being utterly cynical here. They've been critical of Ukrainian refugees being in the US, and have zero qualms about all the Ukrainians being killed by Putin, but they've grabbed on to this story to fit a narrative that Black men are scary.

I think in part it's the effect of the government screwing down prices for the NHS, and delaying introduction of new drugs or even not funding them at all via NICE.
It's good for controlling healthcare costs , but makes a fairly hostile environment for pharma companies, and that's before the difficulties of getting visas etc for researchers who are often a very transient and international bunch.

It’s a really tricky problem isn’t it? We’re actually really good at negotiating drug prices. REALLY good, using volume as one might hope. But doing so has consequences when other big countries are not so good because their purchasing is more diffuse.

Well ISTR some analysis which was loudly shouted down in the atmosphere of 2020 that black people were no more likely to be killed by police than white people when controlling for levels of criminality, but yes, mad levels of police killing. But AIUI with the Ukrainian woman ts not the murder itself that is being protested but the perception that the liberal media see black-on-white murder not really newsworthy. THAT's the wider pattern being protested, I think? Though - as with George Floyd - the perception may not match the reality.

They've been critical of Ukrainian refugees being in the US, and have zero qualms about all the Ukrainians being killed by Putin, but they've grabbed on to this story to fit a narrative that Black men are scary.
Black men are outrageously over-represented in homicide statistics. So yes, this incident speaks to a greater truth
Update: Now the UVU spokesman says the suspect in the shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk is not yet in custody, despite the school saying earlier police did have someone in custody.
"We can confirm that Mr. Kirk was shot, but we don’t know his condition. The suspect is not in custody. Police are still investigating Campus is closed for the rest of the day,” UVU spokesperson Scott Trotter said in a statement, according to Deseret News.
"Tube drivers striking ‘because they cannot buy in London on £72k salary’ Calls for workers to be given 75pc discount on all mainline train tickets and deals on theme parks" (£)
Is there any truth in this Telegraph headline about a £72k salary for tube drivers?
I'd say the most likely thing is that a Union has claimed that they don't earn enough, and that the Telegraph has inserted an alleged 72k salary that they pulled out of thin air or someone's backside, or is some kind of edge figure.
Or, bluntly, perhaps the Telegraph is deliberately stirring again, just as (for example) they did when they used the height of the electricity pylons which take a cable across the Thames Estuary to imply a height for what was coming across East Anglia - which were a fraction of the number they implied.
What is the median salary for a tube driver? Or the starting salary? Is either of those 72k
I don't know a 2025 number, but the Daily Telegraph have trained me to have a healthy contempt for anything they claim until confirmed by a reliable source.
I'm open to correction from anyone who actually knows the numbers.
2648 Train Operators whose total compensation was between £70,000 and £80,000 46 Instructor Operators whose total compensation was between £70,000 and £80,000 235 Train Operators whose total compensation was between £80,000 and £90,000 284 Instructor Operators whose total compensation was between £80,000 and £90,000 2 Train Operators whose total compensation was between £90,000 and £100,000 1 Train Operator whose total compensation exceeded £100,000
So, in 2023, 3,170 train drivers earned more than 70k. Since then, there has been a pay rise. So I think it’s save to say that the vast majority of tube train drivers earn more than £72K

Am I the only person who doesn't need to turn it on? It's a combi and it has a thermostat. What's to turn off?
Seconded. It’s “on” all year and set to 17. Mrs Biggles thinks it’s more like 21.
But we do have a coal fire in the living room. Actually there’s a thought - perhaps I could padlock the coal bunker and ration what she can take? Hmmm.
No, I live in Newcastle - I couldn’t give two hoots about what Tube drivers get paid
One of the deliberate misrepresentations regarding the strike is it's the drivers who are on strike. This is untrue it is for the most part the ticket office and the backroom staff like signallers. Some drivers are on strike but most are in drinking tea. ASLEF not on strike RML on strike.
Interestingly BBC Verify decided to explain what the average train driver earns in the light of the strike.
What I object to is that they're striking. If they'd gone for an overtime ban, then fine. But they like the overtime. What they want is reduced core hours and the same overtime.
An RMT guy was itching for a fight with Khan for not conceding.
My concern is news outlets are report it is ALL the £75,000 pa drivers who are on strike when it isn't the drivers except for the few who are not in ASLEF.
Political violence from any party or any ideology is a direct assault on the foundations of democracy and the rule of law; it seeks not to persuade but to intimidate, not to debate but to destroy. In every instance it corrodes the public trust, diminishes our shared institutions, and replaces reasoned discourse with fear and coercion. Whatever our differences, they must be resolved through the peaceful exchange of ideas, the ballot box, and the institutions that safeguard our freedoms, not through threats, intimidation, or bloodshed.
It’s not considered political violence to round up people and put them in concentration camps. It’s not considered political violence to fund ethnic cleansing and genocide. Very interesting what’s considered political violence and deemed unacceptable.

As for MAGA claims that "the liberal media see black-on-white murder not really newsworthy", that's just an outright lie.
The U.K. has long presented a non stable tax and other costs setup to companies within its jurisdiction.
See the comments by experts here on the comparison with how Norway treats investment and production in its petroleum industry - the taxes are actually higher, but they are very stable. You can make 20 years bets on the Norwegian governments behaviour, as a company.
Or see the wacky judgements that jobs are *legally* equal - you can’t even guarantee that a pay structure now won’t be declared to have been illegal in 20 years time.
If you want investment in the UK, you have to provide stability. We don’t.

It's part of a bigger problem. The UK is falling down the biopharma league table. Merck isn't the only pharma directing its investment elsewhere.

@KevinASchofield BREAKING: Bridget Phillipson easily gets more than 80 nominations to put her into the next round of the Labour deputy leadership election.
Easy to call it. Just like the Liz Truss election, Useless Lucy gets into next phase the Unions and Labour Members will place a tiara of Deputy Leadership on her head. Though they will have to watch out for the dandruff.
Did you see Phillipson speaking at the TUC? She has it in the bag.
Doesn’t matter what she said or how she said it, the one with zero personality is the Starmer candidate and this is “a balls to you and your reshuffle Starmer” election for the vast majority of Union and Party Members.
This is a betting site, and I’m calling it already in the bag for useless Lucy.
Powell is the one with personality?
It’s a close call, but Phillipson is one unique kind of personality vacuum.
Who has the better hair in your estimation? I think Powell.
Phillipson has a rather strong resemblance to Mary from "Our Friends in the North". I wonder how much of this is conscious.
Mary from Our Friends in the North?
Not even close. Try Wendolene Ramsbottom.
As for Powell, I’ll defer detailed comment except to say, I don’t think she even owns a hair brush. I don’t mean that in a mean way, it’s, looking at pictures from throughout her career, she seems comfortable beneath however it’s looking.
Also, in a run off of Tory faithful, pre shredding his credibility Rishi Sunak cannot possibly be thumped in leadership election by Liz Truss? Ditto for this Labour Leadership contest - the unions and Labour members are the electorate.

Still, Our Friends in the North - what a tv series.
Let's face it the BBC would run a bloody mile from it now (and indeed it took a while to get it made in 1990s).

Time to get the jumpers out.
Whoever did that is beyond dumb.
It's good for controlling healthcare costs , but makes a fairly hostile environment for pharma companies, and that's before the difficulties of getting visas etc for researchers who are often a very transient and international bunch.
