I think family reunions should be barred under asylum rules. Article 8 should be heavily qualified or disapplied - it was supposed to protect your right to respect for your private life, and to enjoy your existing home peacefully, without inference from the authorities. I'm baffled as to how it expanded to become the right to bring your family over wherever they reside.
If you applied and qualified for a work visa you wouldn't have the automatic right to bring over your extended family, and nor should it be different for asylum cases.
Yes, it's hard to move to a new country by yourself, without all your family - but people have done it throughout the centuries as part of the choice of emigration.
Blair introduced that. Not sure if it was done by primary legislation but it was a policy choice
Frankly we need a civil war in this country. Not against muslims or immigrants but against the people that are in the nu10k
If there’s only 10k of them that’s not much of a civil war. Not even a Khmer Rouge style massacre. More like a purge, in the fashion of Stalin. But then of course there would be the supporters of the nu10k, or suspected supporters. And spies, and collaborators. Including former purge leaders who are no longer trusted by other purge leaders. And their families. Before long we’re getting more comfortably into post-French Revolution territory.

The online safety bill is more likely to stop you telling the truth than lies.....lets face it everything a politician or a civil servant says is a complete and under lie...the online safety bill merely makes it a crime to point it out

“Hundreds of Nigerian ‘authors’ use visa scheme to enter Britain ‘Poets and bloggers’ can come to UK on talent visa despite Labour’s pledge to reduce immigration”
My goodness, has this been a frustrating day. From 0-2 to 165-2. And to be honest there have been damn few chances. This team is very good with the bat but they seriously need a cutting edge with the ball. Woods is a terrible miss.

I look forward to our esteemed Prime Minister's social media feed being blocked for lies and psychological harm.
I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find examples of both.

India do deserve credit for how they have kept us out for two sessions
Maybe they will reopen the railway station after all! Mentioned in East West railway plan but would be justified in isolation as a reopening for the London to Peterborough main line given this.
At 30 per hectare 150k dwellings is 20 square miles. Windfall at 150k per plot would be £22.5 billion. Development corporation at 2x agricultural value, I suggest. Higher density centrally, and it is a Leicester or a Nottingham.
Very sensible. Milton Keynes is a good model in some respects. Smothered in trees is great. But don't make it roundabout city.

If I'm reading it correctly, the article claims that over the last five years, an average of ten 'authors' a year have been 'endorsed' by the Arts Council.
At that stage the Home Office gets a final sign off, but the article suggests that no data is available about how many of them were actually allowed in, and if they then entered Britain.
As Leon explained, The Telegraph are trolling us.
Five years since the Global Talent Visa was introduced but only four prime ministers. Bloody Gordon Brown!
Most right wing voters now wish to burn the Conservative Party to the ground. They are “woke” to the fact the Conservatives have despised them for a long time.
I'm seriously considering voting Reform in Hampshire next year.
Although I know several Conservative councillors that are fine gentlemen and women they mostly view their role as educating the voters and defending their officers.
As a consequence, left-liberalism rules by default.
What most attracts you to Reform? Is it the climate change denial? The anti-vax? Or maybe the endless office politics as they split and lose MPs? Or is it just how much they love Trump?

Just discovered that the Indian - Keralan - restaurant down the road is now, apparently, a highly recommended Nepalese.
Don't tell Agent Anderson, or we'll have another demo next week demanding Roast Beef.

Two in five arrested for last summer’s UK riots had been reported for domestic abuse Police data indicates overlaps between public violent disorder and domestic violence and abuse ... Police data released under freedom of information (FoI) laws shows that 41% of 899 people arrested for taking part in the violent disorder last July and August had been reported for crimes associated with intimate partner violence.
For those arrested by one police force, this figure was as high as 68%.
Previous offences include actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, stalking, breach of restraint and non-molestation orders, controlling coercive behaviour and criminal damage.

Apparently you can by-pass it and get to your normal porn in just 5 seconds! Thank God. If you can pass on exactly how to do that i’de be grateful, I’m slow at IT. Thanks. 💦
I think this is the blokiest post I've ever read from a lady poster on here.
Your is the blokiest chauvinist ignorant post, as it doesn’t realise us ladies use more porn and lube than men.
You men all over in 8 seconds, then cheese and onion sandwich and match of the day. We can go days in eternal orgasm. Sleep on that. Loser.
If you don’t believe me, you can pay my lube bill.

it.
Exactly this
How can people not see this.
Sure, whipping up lies has always been fertile soil for Right Wing Populists.
I just expect PB to be more intelligent than that.
I wouldn’t openly wear a Rolex walking down the streets of London. There have been enough stories about extremely violent mugging that people take care.
It’s not a question of statistics but people’s lived experience
I don't know London well enough to comment. But having now looked at Farage's post the criticisms seem feeble. Is it safe to wear expensive jewellery in London or not? Have things got worse?
There are lots of emotive articles about rich women being robbed and phones being snatched so that’s what people believe. Don’t know whether it is actually true or not
Are you seriously denying there is a major problem with phone snatching in London?!
FWIW I live near London and have lived in it for many years, without ever encountering the issue or meeting anyone who had.
It’s a massive problem and you’re delusional, with all respect
Just look at the data
I’ve had two attempts on my phone - one failed one successful
You're not wrong in that phone snatching is a serious problem. Neither Mrs Stodge nor I will get our phones out in public - just not worth it - yet you see so many people holding them and using them and asking for trouble despite repeated Police warnings around tube stations in particular.
If, 20 years ago, you had walked around waving £10 and £20 notes in the air, you might have expected to be robbed. In essence, it's no different. Yes, you can protect yourself from some of the consequences with proper security and encryption on the phone itself but not from the inconvenience, the shock and the sense of well, helplessness for want of a better word.
The whole point of a smartphone is that you can use it anywhere. If you're not taking it out in public at all for fear of it being stolen then you're having a lot of the utility of your smartphone stolen from you all the time.
And this is one way in which everyone can be affected by this sort of crime even if they haven't personally been victims. The fear of the crime will lead to people modifying their behaviour and experiencing heightened anxiety. It's wearying to be forever on one's guard.
It's really important to get a grip on these sorts of crimes and stamp them out.
It's probably for the data/ bankcards more than the value of the phone.
Two things: (1) I have an old-ish cracked phone and not a pricey/expensive one, and, (2) I don't have all my shit on it, just photos and Whatsapp etc, and still do all my banking on my desktop, and keep plastic debit and credit cards.
If someone nicks my phone I'll be annoyed, and so will they when they realise it's worth nothing, but I can still function.
3) keep it in a tight-fitting case with a safety wrist lanyard. Also stops you dropping it if you get jostled.

Bowl them out an hour after tea and hang on grimly at 21-7 for the draw The most England thing ever
I seem to have jinxed the cricket with my ill advised comment a couple of hours ago.
Sent from a glamorous sunny Le Touquet
Ooh, I was there 2 days ago.
We’re staying in the nearby Le Crotoy, on the Baie de Somme. A surprisingly chi-chi little place. It reminds me of Holt in Norfolk. In fact the whole Baie de Somme area reminds me of North Norfolk and the Wash.
Le Touquet on the other hand is delightfully odd. I don’t know if you had the same sense, but it’s like a mash-up of British seaside towns with a touch of Franco-Belgian. The front itself is Ostende, just back from the front in the town it’s Margate or Folkestone, the beach itself is Cromer or Great Yarmouth, but inland and all the suburbs are pure Bournemouth.
My goodness, has this been a frustrating day. From 0-2 to 165-2. And to be honest there have been damn few chances. This team is very good with the bat but they seriously need a cutting edge with the ball. Woods is a terrible miss.

To be honest, today, frustrating as it was, is what makes Test cricket the greatest sport. England hammered India into the ground this morning then had them 0-2 at lunch. All over? Well, not quite. Two determined and capable batsmen were capable of changing the whole match and saving it for India. Nothing in test cricket is over until it is over. That's what makes it so great.

Take 2 or 3 before lunch and we win, otherwise its a draw i think. New ball vital
Online safety act, wave upon wave of immigration, smoking ban, woke infestation. "Tories".
This was passed, essentially, because so many Tory MPs - specifically women - received vile abuse.
But politicians never seem to do a proper impact assessment of any legislation they draft.
They stop at the soundbite and rhetoric.
They always feel the need to do *something* even if it makes it worse
We must do something. This is something. Let's do it!
The same applies to voters tempted to vote for Reform...
I think the subtlety of that line of reasoning is probably beyond most of them. This is outrageous and that's what Nigel thinks too is about as far as it gets.

Who cares they are all imbeliecles they sooner they are removed the better
The really big political news of the last 24 hours is the end of the Roksana Fiaz era here in Newham. She has not been selected as the Labour Mayoral candidate for next year's election and the Labour candidate is Forhad Hussain who was a councillor in Plaistow North from 2010-18 and was once a member of Respect.
He could be the ideal candidate to take the wind out of the Newham Independent sails and this looks a shrewd move by Newham Labour. We've also had the first leaflet for a while from Labour in my Ward delivered today.
Reform have also started to leaflet parts of the Borough:
As stated, they only polled 5000 votes across the three Parliamentary constituencies in July 2024 and neither contested the two by elections held on General Election day nor the two held two weeks later. That was then and it will be interesting to see how many Reform candidates we get next May.
Despite the entertainment and the distractions it is worth noting how few comments address the substance of both what the IMF and others have said and the thread header summarises. Even when it is spelled out in words not much larger than a single syllable, we are still as a nation and a government determined to pretend that something other than financial disaster and meltdown is staring us in the face.
There will come a day, soon, when our own opinion of reality will not be the one that counts.
It’s already being used to censor political speech
I wish someone could apply it to you.
I've kept away today because you have been on fire. In between your role as a PB sport summariser, which is fine, you have been posting stuff which fifty percent of your audience will applaud whilst the rest of us consider all the stuff about immigrants stealing mobile phones, and immigrants this, and immigrants that, best avoided.
What a shame.
I have noted that you have been even more disagreeable with other posters than normal today. Anyway my turn now, I have the exercise book in place for the caning.
So much bad shit is happening to the UK all in one go, I am not sure we can recover from it
Hopefully there will come a time when we look back at this sort of hyper-ventilating with an indulgent smile.
In the meantime we have the task of protecting what is, actually, a reasonably successful mature democracy and steering it away from the Scylla of a Trumpist fellow-traveller and the Charybdis of a Putinist fellow-traveller.
There's a lot of ruin in the United Kingdom but those two guys are capable of breaking a lot of stuff.

If there are stats I'd like to see them - seriously.
The Swappies had a significant history of exploitation of female activists by senior males, but they partly imploded around Comrade Delta.
I'm not sure about the more mainstream left, though there are domestic abuse issues everywhere of course - *that* feminist analysis is about right in principle.
I think at present such items as Farage's endorsement of Andrew Tate are perhaps more significant problems, and some of the values underneath NatCon stuff, which is dripping in from the US Nationalist Right. Observe the unchallenged misogyny around Trump's willingness to appoint sex abusers, for example - never mind the hypocrisy of his Evangelical and Integralist Catholic base.
On the more marginal end, it is only a month since Russell Brand was having Tommy Robinson's "Silenced" on 'Watch Along with Russell'. I haven't watched the playback. I have seen enough of TR's stuff to observe it's self-collapsing nature,

Extremists of all colours tend to like a bit of controlling behaviour. It’s part of the same mental makeup that makes them extremists in the first place.
Is it because it's stopping you from saying things untrue which causes psychological harm?
Saying untrue things which causes psychological harm is bad
But stopping people saying untrue things which causes psychological harm before the fact is bureaucratic and has many false positives
A better approach would be to punish people who said untrue things which causes psychological harm after the fact
And even then there should be a free-speech loophole, and one should err on the side of free speech. Who is to judge what is true or untrue?
I've been researching that very question. In the US it is Trump. In the UK it is Leon. Both can feel and emote the truth and don't need pesky facts or experts. Where on earth would be without them?

What do you do when some upstart newcomer to the cause points at you and accuses you of revisionism or of secretly spying for the Nu10k? Protest all you like, by then you’ll have taught them the taste of blood and they will need refreshment.
You know what....dont care its better that the shit stain we have
Please stop saying you want people shot/a civil war.
“It has emerged that police ignored multiple warning signs in the months leading up to the bombing. The attacker had repeatedly called for violent revolution and civil war on a popular political betting site.”
So much bad shit is happening to the UK all in one go, I am not sure we can recover from it
London wont but who cares about london
London's fine, not fine, it's actually great. Just need London's finest reporter to bugger off on his hols somewhere and chill.
London is the toilet of england
Says nobody who lives here.
Well, let’s unpack this:
- It has water: check - It’s bowl shaped: check - It’s flush: check - There are lots of Rolls: check - It’s recently had air freshener: check - It has fans: check - Most number 1 and number 2s end there: check - It’s essential
Please stop saying you want people shot/a civil war.
Why?
I suspect its the only way to get the country back on back....do I want people killed no probably not....however you do need to relieve the idiots from power what do you suggest?

Elections? Join reform or the sultanas if you are a lefty, the civil conflict option will still be there later
Digital encyclopaedia may impose quota on number of users to comply with Online Safety Act
Wikipedia could be forced to limit access in the UK unless crucial elements of Britain’s online safety rules are changed, the High Court has been told.
Lawyers for the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation which helps run the online encyclopaedia, warned it could be required to introduce a “quota-based” system for UK visitors if it is classified as a “category one” service under the Online Safety Act.
Services falling under this designation are subject to the strictest duties under the digital laws, which are intended to stop children accessing harmful online material and prevent the spread of illegal posts.

I'm curious. When were we last on our feet iyo?
For me, the reform of the Royal Dockyards by Sir William White and the building of the Royal Sovereign class pre-dreadnoughts was pretty good.
He massively improved productivity, reduced costs and even introduced an innovative use of borrowing by the government to smooth the cash flow from the Naval Estimates.

Good government.
Superficially yes. But arguably the rot had set in by then.
Well for a start it makes you look like a huge tit
Good quiz. That was the answer, what was the question?
- Why shouldn’t I wear this shiny blue-fronted coat?
I think he meant voting for Reform.
Well it is that or the pagan2 way. NOTA parties are a vital safety valve, if only the mainstream ones could be a bit less shit perhaps one would not be top of the polls.
No, he's just displaying his mastery of vibe campaigning.
I wouldn't have said stations were the problem - thieves need to escape so it's far more likely on a street where they can quickly cycle away..
It’s not in the stations you effing dimwit. It’s as people emerge from stations into daylight (ditto bars, restaurants, cinemas). They instantly look at their phones and that’s when the thieves attack - a moment of maximum distraction
PB is just so ludicrously stupid on issues like this. ‘Oh it’s never happened to me it’s not a problem’. Grow up
Just as an aside, and Leon could confirm this, in Japan they leave their phones on restaurant tables to 'book' the place. A bit like Germans do with their towels. Such a polite nation.
Another aside, if you want a cheap(er) Breitling watch, check the Police Lost Property sales. Seems the owners don't always want to be re-introduced to them - or perhaps they already have the insurance. The net proceeds go to good causes via the Police Property Act Fund (PPAF).
Several years ago my car was stolen. No trace of it, so the insurance paid out. Then three or four years later the police contacted me; was this my car? Could I identify it? I couldn't but it wasn't "mine" by then anyway.
I'm not a used car or a double glazing salesman, or Russell Brand - why would I want a Breitling Watch?
Comments
Remember Boris, he was your previous squeeze.
I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find examples of both.
India do deserve credit for how they have kept us out for two sessions
Very sensible. Milton Keynes is a good model in some respects. Smothered in trees is great. But don't make it roundabout city.
This is something.
Let's do it!
They aren’t a conspiracy. It’s a Confederacy of likeminded Dunces. Who’ve been given power by default.
Thatcher or Churchill had their equivalents running away gibbering. By raising an eyebrow.
What you are suggesting is thermonuclear war against incompetent goldfish.
Don't tell Agent Anderson, or we'll have another demo next week demanding Roast Beef.
There's a good Thai one as well.
I find browsing through “On Thermonuclear War” by Herman Kahn very relaxing.
The chapter on “The Problem of Reaching 1970” - written in the late 50s - is positively Woodhousian.
SAVE OUR BRITISH WOMEN ... FROM ... US !!!
Two in five arrested for last summer’s UK riots had been reported for domestic abuse
Police data indicates overlaps between public violent disorder and domestic violence and abuse
...

You men all over in 8 seconds, then cheese and onion sandwich and match of the day.
We can go days in eternal orgasm.
Sleep on that. Loser.
If you don’t believe me, you can pay my lube bill.
The most England thing ever
Le Touquet on the other hand is delightfully odd. I don’t know if you had the same sense, but it’s like a mash-up of British seaside towns with a touch of Franco-Belgian. The front itself is Ostende, just back from the front in the town it’s Margate or Folkestone, the beach itself is Cromer or Great Yarmouth, but inland and all the suburbs are pure Bournemouth.
One time she was asking why the PIRA was so upset with the British Army shooting joyriders. After all the PIRA did so, themselves, with much aplomb.
I suggested this was a demarcation dispute. The ‘RA was worried the Britis were taking their jobs - and jobs were hard to find in NI at the time.
New ball vital
The really big political news of the last 24 hours is the end of the Roksana Fiaz era here in Newham. She has not been selected as the Labour Mayoral candidate for next year's election and the Labour candidate is Forhad Hussain who was a councillor in Plaistow North from 2010-18 and was once a member of Respect.
He could be the ideal candidate to take the wind out of the Newham Independent sails and this looks a shrewd move by Newham Labour. We've also had the first leaflet for a while from Labour in my Ward delivered today.
Reform have also started to leaflet parts of the Borough:
https://www.opennewham.co.uk/news/reform-make-an-entrance
As stated, they only polled 5000 votes across the three Parliamentary constituencies in July 2024 and neither contested the two by elections held on General Election day nor the two held two weeks later. That was then and it will be interesting to see how many Reform candidates we get next May.
There will come a day, soon, when our own opinion of reality will not be the one that counts.
I've kept away today because you have been on fire.

The problem is bland uselessness.
For example, the other day a judge recorded to redefine family beyond marriage or blood relationships.
Thatcher or Churchill would have had a redefinition of family to the sensible version in the commons before lunch. Primary legislation etc.
If you can’t be bothered to use power, someone will.
Perhaps this is unsurprising, but it's certainly a striking statistic.
Please stop saying you want people shot/a civil war.
