A significant article from Farage in the DM this morning: "Britain can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world"

For years, the Tories peddled the myth that all immigration is positive because migrants work and contribute to society. Quite simply, it was a lie and they knew it – yet they covered it up.

The Tories will never be forgiven for what they have done to our country. They have failed on border security, failed on welfare and failed to deliver for working people. They broke Britain and it will take Reform to fix it.

Under a Reform-led government, we will ban all foreign nationals from receiving benefits. If you want to live in this country, you must work, contribute to society and adhere to our culture. We cannot allow foreigners to benefit off the backs of hard-working Britons while the rest of the country suffers.

Reform will introduce an immediate freeze on all immigration: illegal migrants will be deported and legal migration will pause. When it resumes, we will ensure the UK welcomes only the best and brightest – the world’s top doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs – in small numbers.

So even if a foreign national resident of the UK had worked for years then got sick they would not receive any help at all. Why don’t Reform just go all in and force foreign nationals to wear an identifier so Brits know who the alleged scrounges are ! . And what does adhere to Brit culture mean , are foreigners allowed to celebrate something from their ancestral country or will the culture police be there to round them up for re-education !
Actually, that happens. If you move here legally - from Canada, say - you have to take out insurance against any claim you might make on the NHS. Which doesn't seem unreasonable.
I'd be interested how universally applied that is, though.
Fascinating to me why people in the uk think this at all controversial. Go and work in Asia or the Middle East and see what happens to your visa if you say you can’t work anymore because you suddenly realised you have adult ADHD.
Apologies for butting in on the group ignorance, but what do you think the immigrant healthcare surcharge is?
When you live and work in such places, as I have done, you accept that in exchange for the perk of being allowed to be there, you are at the grace of your host. The first sign of the merest rule breaking and you are out. No means to fully support yourself and ditto.

Do nothing wrong whatsoever and remain employed and you still might find yourself turfed out when it comes to renew your work visa. Apply for “settled status” and expect arbitrary and unexplained reasons for denial.

Is it a tokenistic policy which wouldn't be required if immigration were actually under control?

In quite a few European countries, various benefits can only be accessed by paying into the system, first. Kinda insurance style.
I am aware that “Singapore on Thames” became a running joke among a certain type after 2016. But honestly Lee Kuan Yew figured out almost every aspect of how to run a modern state years ago. Welfare, healthcare, housing, immigration, religious tolerance, productivity, infrastructure, foreign relations, defence, criminal justice. Some aspects were certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but honestly we should just transpose his book to the governance of the uk and be done with it.

The Afghan Response Route was agreed and started after I had resigned from the Government over their migration policies. The plan to do this scheme was on the list of things Suella Braverman and I were working together to oppose and change.

Why would the Tories cover it up though? Politically what would be in it for them? Yes, if they believed immigration was the unpalatable solution to our economic woes. But Nigel is asserting they didn't believe that and knew all along that immigration was crap. So why bother?
Because the Tories rely on the votes of the old and property owners who are the main beneficiaries of immigration. They couldn't be honest about the link between immigration and house prices.

The UK is no different, colleague says that his tenants/wider social circle are no longer getting visas renewed in IT sector. Still new people coming in but companies seem to have moved to turning over migrant workers, prioritising naivety and lower expectations over experience.

Yes, politicians are in the business of persuasion, so it's not good enough to say you supported/opposed something if you couldn't win over others to your position.

The whip is now removed/suspended for more easily than it ever used to be. No Labour MP lost the whip under Blair because of their voting; those few cases that did were for things they'd said or done outside the voting lobbies.

F1 tracking at about MI:TFR minus 13 mill, which means it *should* scrape over the $500million line worldwide. That's not a lot these days, and with a budget of £300mil and large marketing costs means it might not make a profit. Still it's a success d'estime, so everybody'll be happy with that.

He's referring to the ARR specifically.

The Afghan Response Route was agreed and started after I had resigned from the Government over their migration policies. The plan to do this scheme was on the list of things Suella Braverman and I were working together to oppose and change.

A significant article from Farage in the DM this morning: "Britain can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world"

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-14908413/NIGEL-FARAGE-Britain-no-longer-treated-like-charity-rest-world.html

I liked this, but with the proviso that if you want to adopt the Singapore model then that comes with 85% of the population being housed in the Singaporean equivalent of council housing. I’m not sure the system works without state control of the housing market at a deep level. Oh, and top state employees have their pay tied to the top 0.4% of local pay, to attract high quality candidates & eliminate the temptation to take bribes. I can just see the faces of some here if you told them that top civil servants were going to be paid £2million+ per annum.

The blunt acceptance of reality as it was & dealing with that face on has always been something that appealed about Lee Kuan Yew, even if you don’t take on every aspect of his approach to running Singapore.

The UK is no different, colleague says that his tenants/wider social circle are no longer getting visas renewed in IT sector. Still new people coming in but companies seem to have moved to turning over migrant workers, prioritising naivety and lower expectations over experience.
You know you’re full of shit with this comment, why pretend. The problem has been the same since before 2010 when Dave lied on tv during the debate with his tens of thousands bollocks. We’ve been shit poor at shutting the door and turfing out the worse immigrants. And amazingly efficient at being completely hostile to foreign born spouses of Brits and high value economic migrants.

Thousands of foreign convicted crims laughing at us. I could introduce you to a couple. More than a million foreign nationals on benefits, 700-800k of them unemployed. You don’t have to look too far for that. The incompetence has been so dazzlingly brilliant you could have barely achieved a more catastrophic outcome for our country if you tried.

Living in govt owned housing is not a social faux pas there and much of it is positively aspirational. The proportion is far higher than is desirable or necessary here. But as a rampart free marketeer, it’s fecking obvious to me that we won’t fix the housing shortfall here without direct government intervention. And yes, our civil service and legislature is dross because they’re underpaid so anyone half decent has no interest. But the pay rises first require these departments to be gutted to a shell and started again.

A significant article from Farage in the DM this morning: "Britain can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world"

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-14908413/NIGEL-FARAGE-Britain-no-longer-treated-like-charity-rest-world.html

I am warming to Farage, he acknowledges lawyers are as important as doctors and entrepreneurs.

Maybe this is the point at which Starmer wishes he'd won a 50 instead of a 170 seat majority.

There’s what 400 odd Labour MPs? I managed to not speak to my head of department for his entire 18 month tenure… Quite proud of that.
It does seem to be a consistent criticism along with the woman issue (which has been made against the likes of Cameron as well). To be fair he has been away every other week on international business. But when the shit was hitting the fan with the welfare cuts, the reports were Big Ange had to deploy the carrot and stick to sort the mess out as Starmer is detached from these more awkward MPs.

The whip is now removed/suspended for more easily than it ever used to be. No Labour MP lost the whip under Blair because of their voting; those few cases that did were for things they'd said or done outside the voting lobbies.

    https://bsky.app/profile/philipjcowley.bsky.social/post/3lu42lszi2c2r

The left block were quite small and the vast majority of the party were loyalists. Therefore, Blair could turn a blind eye as it only dented rather than removed his majority

There’s vanishingly little in their management of the country that would not also work very well here. Though sometimes it would need a local twist. It was also a hard slog, it took 20-30 years to really embed his vision. Everyone here loses attention when a tv greengrocer goes to work with no pants on.

The Tories will never be forgiven for what they have done to our country. They have failed on border security, failed on welfare and failed to deliver for working people. They broke Britain and it will take Reform to fix it.

We'd need to find some top civil servants first.

A significant article from Farage in the DM this morning: "Britain can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world"

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-14908413/NIGEL-FARAGE-Britain-no-longer-treated-like-charity-rest-world.html

It's a citystate in asia pacific with half the population of London.
    Is it really!! Goodness! :-)

Go and read his book and see what you think. I suggest you know not what you’re talking about if you use this as a reason to say his solutions are of no relevance.
There will be things to learn from Pore as there is from many places. But you said we should take the template in full. That's plain daft.
There’s vanishingly little in their management of the country that would not also work very well here. Though sometimes it would need a local twist. It was also a hard slog, it took 20-30 years to really embed his vision. Everyone here loses attention when a tv greengrocer goes to work with no pants on.
I know the place quite well. It's authoritarian. Chock full of social control. I'm surprised that somebody (you) who considered our Covid response to be tantamount to a police state would be gazing longingly at it.
