They have been going round in circles (RAT in, RAT out, why the mayday call, flaps up, gear up confusion) for dozens of pages. Everyone now wants to wait for the flight recorder.
I thought there were probably still enough fresh insights being posted by well-informed people to keep it open. Ignoring the unhelpful posts is easy to do.
Large pinch of salt here. Its a single annonymous diplomat. And israel want to finish the job now
Israel have:
a) crossed the Rubicon b) total air superiority c) diminished Iran's proxies.
There will never be a better opportunity than this to finish the job.
It would be insanity not to do so.
And if Iran are trying to save the regime israel will say 'thanks for the info, onwards'
What’s also interesting is, so far, we’ve not had a massive spike in Oil prices. Up to $130 was forecast. What does the market know ?
Israel hasnt targetted the gulf yet and Hormuz is still open
Where in the Gulf will Israel target ? They’ve attacked Iranian refineries and took some production out.
Anyway, pricing reacts to sentiment and expectations.
Buy on rumour sell on fact. As they say.
Ok, they havent flattened the gulf oil industry and forced the iranians to close Hormuz which is what would see $150 plus. The oil market has bedn very weird generally, lets see what the week brings
Why would Israel flatten the gulf oil industry ? Their beef is with Iran.

1 a depressingly large number of children are sexually and physically abused in this country. 2 the risks of this happening are greater if you don’t live in a supportive home environment but nothing can eliminate the risk as students of private schools occasionally learn.
3 people pretend to care about those in care but all too often don’t.
4 there is an incredibly strong tendency to blame the victims of such offences both because it is an excuse for gross incompetence and indifference.
5 misogynistic attitudes, contempt for WWC and others, cultural attitudes to non believers and other factors can all contribute to these tendencies but none of them are a necessary adjunct to them. Such evil is pervasive. 6 we need to learn to care more as a society. Good luck with that!

Let's hope they don't miss the point quite this spectacularly.

Chris Philip announces that "hundreds" of people could be going to jail because of the "cover-up" on Grooming gangs.
Question - why did Chris Philip and his government cover this up?
Do the Tories really think there are political points they can score here? Really?
There were PBers saying similar things over a decade ago.
Meanwhile the government in which Chris Philp was a part, including being Minister of State for crime and policing, did nothing.
Even by the standards of politicians Chris Philp is a contemptible individual.
I don't think its quite true to say that the police did nothing under the Tories - how many cases of this kind of grooming have been completed now? Rochdale, Telford, Oxford etc - and most before the glorious revolution of 2024.
So you agree with Starmer ( prior to his U turn) that it was all under control from local legacy inquiries.

What is the point? There will be an investigation by experts with access to all the data.

What we won't hear.
1. The vast majority of sexual and physical abuse takes place within families yet the usual people will bang on for ever more parental rights. 2.Children's rights to be placed equal to those of adults. That will continue to be laughably woke.
While 1 is correct, this isn't what this specific issue is about.
Bill Kristol @BillKristol · 14m New poll: Trump at 42%-56% approval. Dems up 8 in generic Congressional ballot. And, "in a survey experiment, Democratic messaging on the economy does not outperform messaging on immigration."

As they are our servants, I assume they will have no problem in telling us, their masters, the details of their own bank accounts.
If you think about it, any money owed to HMRC is the taxpayers' money so should be recovered. That and Personal Injury claims are two amounts that are almost* always collected.
HMRC have been known to do deals with large companies where large amounts are due (to their shame IMHO)
HMRC's approach to deals differs depending on who it is.
Smaller entity - "We've found £X, settle today and we WON'T come back tomorrow. If we have to come back tomorrow, I guarantee I'll make that X a multitude higher."
Larger entity - "Look, just pay us something. I know you owe us a billion quid, but let's shake on half a million and we'll call it a win."
Big, rich companies have a lot of power. Yes. What should we do about that?
Chris Philip announces that "hundreds" of people could be going to jail because of the "cover-up" on Grooming gangs.
Question - why did Chris Philip and his government cover this up?
Do the Tories really think there are political points they can score here? Really?
The conservatives instituted the Jay Enquiry and to accuse them of cover ups is a bit far
However, I accept more should have been done but Starmer's problem is he and other cabinet ministers accused the opposition of pandering to the far right and even rascism, and as a result is highly compromised and must be regretting he didn't take the initiative and order the enquiry immediately
Starmer reacts to events, and changes his mind making so many u turns his credibilty is undermined by nobody but himself
You miss the point. Philip states there have been cover-ups. His party was in government whilst those cover-ups were going on His party notoriously refused to implement any of the report findings If there have been cover-ups, the Conservatives presided over them. And now want credit for doing so.
I do not agree with you on this and certainly Starmer only has himself to blame
As Sam Coates on Sky said the problem is that most of these crimes were in labour controlled councils and of course they are in government now
You don't agree that the Tories were in government when this cover-up took place? You don't agree that they refused to implement *any* of the recommendations of their own enquiry?
There's only one party who is going to do well off this and that's reform, not the Tories. There is an *awful* lot of anger out there and I have been reading a fair bit of it. People go absolutely off it when Tories try to direct blame at Labour.
This is only going to damage the Tories further. What it does to Labour (which will be bad as they have done this absurd performative no no no no no no no yes) doesn't really matter if you are a Tory, as these is going to absolutely immolate them.
If you think the conservatives are going to be blamed for this then you are not real
I know you have an issue [to be polite] with the conservatives but this is now on labour
Read the room. By which I mean the public. The Conservatives *have been* blamed, continue *to be blamed* and will continue to be so. Because so much of this is on them. Labour's handling has been hilariously bad but they have been on office for less than a year.
Sorry Big G, your lot have absolutely sunk themselves over this. Had they been contrite then maybe a bit of credit. But they're pratting around like they are blameless. And people out there on Facebook and especially Twitter aren't having it.
I am surprised you rely on social media but we will see
And they are attacking Starmer for his recognised u turn and his use of language towards them of hard right and racism
Labour have made a godawful mess of this and are rightly going to get booted in the head. I've said that from the start. But the idea that the Tories can capitalise is plainly absurd - they are rightly getting roasted for the brass neck in doing nothing and complaining that Labour are doing nothing.
Social media can be a terrible talking shop. But it's also the place where trends emerge. In 2025 it's a reality that Twitter, TikTok and Facebook are the main sources of news for large numbers of people - primarily because it's interactive.
You seem to be suggesting that the Tories are going to benefit. They will not - but Reform will. We probably both agree that is a Bad Thing. But it doesn't make it less of a reality.
Why is it a bad thing ? Question their motivations all you like but at least they’re on the side of the victims and supporting them. Not turning a blind eye to it or doing nothing like the main parties either nationally or locally. Or even worse, as many Labour politicians did, blame the victims and accuse even people on their own side of racism.
The fact Reform and others can claim this ground is major parties did nothing aside from wilfully ignore it. Remember Rotherham social services removed a child from a UKIP supporting family over their politics while ignoring the army of rapists of kids in their midst.
Having Labour or the Tories or them coalition with their ‘oh fuck them, they probably, asked for it anyway’ mindset is not a great thing either
I am sympathetic to the reform agenda, just not the Reform agenda. We need to make some pretty significant structural changes to the country and the positive from the rise of the Nigel is that we're now talking about that.
Why its a Bad Thing is that Reform UK so far have all of the blame and none of the ideas. These councils they now control, they have gone riding into town thinking they can finally uncover the rampant waste and corruption that must be there. I have no doubt that there will be pockets of this. But the reason why local services are ruined isn't because of DEI officers, its because their funding has been gutted.
More money is part of the answer, but not the whole answer. Structural changes are needed to how we deliver services and what those services are, but so far Reform think its all about flags and woke. It isn't.
Reform is already significantly in train aiui. That is what all these regional mayors are about, and 3 year settlement etc, unitaries everywhere etc.

I just thanked Sandi my online advisor bot at Santander after she activated my new credit card. Am I an idiot? (In this specifice matter rather than more generally)
My wife, when criticising the driving habits of others, says that, "practice makes automatic."
I would advise to practice being polite to bots, so that politeness becomes automatic, not least because companies will want to obfuscate when you are talking to a bot or a human.
The problem applied to driving is that practice of bad or dangerous habits makes those automatic. It needs continuous improvement.

9) Someone put forward a bill to parliament that would have made reporting the truth a criminal offence. It was defeated.
First I've heard of this, please expand upon this point.
I'll need to dig - it was a bill which would have made reporting/tweeting/etc something likely to cause/increase racial tensions a criminal offence.
Then someone noticed that the defence of it being true wasn't included.
So reporting the literal facts of {Thing That Can't Be Named} would have been criminalised.
There was this too from earlier on this year
Lord spiritual argues for religious exemption to child abuse law
Bishop of Manchester, who sits by right in the Lords, suggests abuse revealed during confession should be exempt from reporting law
A Church of England bishop has used his reserved seat in the House of Lords to argue for religious exemptions to mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse.
Speaking in a debate on Tuesday, the bishop of Manchester David Walker (pictured) said there was an "arguable case" for exempting child sexual abuse revealed during confession.
The bishop's claim contradicts the recommendation of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) that mandatory reporting should "not be subject" to religious exemptions, including abuse revealed during "sacramental confession".
Walker said the tradition of "the seal of the confessional" had been "honoured for many centuries "and was "established in canon law in this land".
"I know my Catholic colleagues will particularly be concerned around that", he added.

I can entirely see the bishop's point. His position is at least internally consistent. But what this suggests to me is the case for removing the clergy from the political decision-making process.
Chatting to a colleague, just become aware of another tax cliff-edge.
His wife isn't currently working (they have small children) and they'd taken advantage of a married couple's partial tax allowance transfer (apparently someone earning under the personal allowance can transfer about 10% of their allowance - so about £1200? - to spouse, but only if spouse is a basic rate tax payer). His pay, after salary sacrifice for pension and cycle to work went, last year, about £100 over the threshold for moving into higher rate. That £100 got taxed at 40% + NI and he lost the extra £1200 or so of transferred personal allowance, so got taxed an extra £240 or so (20%).
Someone moving from the threshold to £100 above (I'm not sure how far below threshold he was before - I assume he's still taking home more than he was the year before - but the point was that if he lost £100 of taxable salary through AVCs etc he'd get more take home pay) would have a marginal tax rate of 280% or so, ignoring NI. Presumably it kicks in if you get a £1 pay rise over the threshold, giving a marginal rate of ~24000%.
All from a brief conversation over a cuppa, so it may be specifics are wrong.

Could I repeat that they have always had the ability to go after monies that are due to the state. Some people don't like paying taxes (or debts) so do hide money. Not the fine upstanding people of PC, of course.

An easy way round all this rubbish. Tax everything at the same rate.
Does anyone know what percentage of road vehicles in London are electric?
Do you include Lime Bikes and buses?
I was probably including buses but not bikes. But mainly thinking of cars, lorries, vans, etc.
"More than 2,000 zero-emission buses operate across the capital, around 22% of our entire fleet. This means 2 in 9 buses in London is using zero-emission technology. "The zero-emission fleet is made up of hydrogen, battery electric and opportunity charged buses which are topped up using a pantograph multiple times a day."
Impossible. I believe there was some Patriot Mobile or something like that that marketed to MAGA types over the past few years with similar claims. Of course they are just cheap old left over stock Chinese Android phones.
"By Made"...I presume they will mean taking them out of one box and putting them in another.
And like Tesco Mobile or Sky Mobile, the wireless carrier will actually be an established player that they are renting capacity from.
Does anyone have a rough estimate of what compensation might cost? I'd guess it would be well into the £billions if there are tens of thousands affected. Proving who had been failed by the police vs. there simply being a lack of evidence to proceed would probably be tricky I'd guess. Still, if they were failed by the state so egregiously they should be entitled to compensation.
I wonder if rather than the usual, wait 20 years for a chance at a large settlement when the chancellor gets round to it, we should have more of a:
Everyone plausibly affected gets a monthly amount, non-refundable and it stops only when state has properly investigated and decided no further compensation is due. Or indeed an extra payment needs to be made. That would help victims in the meantime, help government to budget the cost and also maybe incentivise govt to hurry up a bit.

I bet it does. The Israelis have total air superiority.
Any negotiations should be on the Iranian terms of surrender, including the complete and total removal of all nuclear activities (including civilian power) from the country.
They can't be trusted with any form of nukes anymore.

The online propaganda can be quite surreal. Some people seem convinced that the state of Israel is on the brink of collapse because of Iran's missiles and a Palestinian-led government will soon take over.

Hard to disagree that seems to be the widespread sentiment. The country just doesn’t work for enough people.
Something will give, sooner or later.
It's because not enough people work, so those who do feel as though they are being taken for a ride by illegal immigrants in 4* hotels, spurious benefit claimants who get thousands per month by scamming their way past a useless PIP assessment and lazy public sector workers who don't do very much but keep getting huge payrises and lavish pensions.
The country's productive workers are at breaking point, many are looking to the exit door and following the rich out to parts of Europe where they won't be taxed to death to pay for illegals and the lazy.
Well, it certainly looked like a dual engine failure, but there's no chance each failure was an independent event.
Two independent failures in one flight - very rare, almost unheard of. Two simultaneously? Within fractions of a second? Nah. There is a common cause or an error.
Bad news for GE, they were really dominating the 787 market after the Trent engine issues that RR had. I hope that this isn't an issue for any more planes though. The victims families need closure, hopefully the investigation will lead to heads rolling at Boeing or GE if it's one or a combination of the two that has caused this.

(narrator: "total air superiority" is a bit like saying "total partial". Barty should have said "air supremacy". Following SEAD strikes on Iran, Israel currently owns the skies over Iran. That will not remain true for long but right now they can bomb at their leisure. Iran can deploy flak but this is not WW2 and the range is not enough)

No idea. But since NI and Scotland are still going ahead with their schemes it should be possible to find out.
I think this one area where we should not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. What the victims deserve is some help to put their lives back on track - financial compensation plus other therapeutic help, removal of convictions for drunkenness etc.,. and that help is needed now - not in a decade.

I wonder what the "new evidence" is because either it is the black boxes = definitely double engine failure; or it is more speculation = not definitely double engine failure.
I think many on PPrune noted that it would explain everything including the mayday and including the behaviour of the aeroplane. Also, as has been noted, it is not necessarily, or even likely independent as one engine failure might affect the other somehow.

Any negotiations should be on the Iranian terms of surrender, including the complete and total removal of all nuclear activities (including civilian power) from the country.
They can't be trusted with any form of nukes anymore.

Hard to disagree that seems to be the widespread sentiment. The country just doesn’t work for enough people.

Our democracy will probably be what gives.
The entitled classes now outnumber the productive classes so I assume they will keep voting themselves payrises and benefit increases until the nation becomes Argentina. The UK is on a very bumpy road and we still have a chance to divert to a better one but it means big cuts to entitlements and the state to balance the budget and stop living beyond our means.

Why do you say it will not remain true for long?
It is a mistake often made in warfare that if something is destroyed it stays destroyed. This is not the case. The afflicted army frantically tries to repair or replace it. Because in this case the initial strikes were so brutal, this will take them some time. But after some weeks/months they will eventually be replaced.
In Russia/Ukraine, the Russians tried and failed to do SEAD. In Israel/Iran, the Israelis succeeded. We should observe both cases and learn lessons.

That is an absolute master class in punching down. The vast majority of public sector workers are not Sir Humphrey types and don't have lavish pension arrangements or pay rises. They earn about the London Living Wage and do things like answering the telephone trying to help people file their taxes or work in the NHS, police or local council services. PIP is a working benefit where people get money towards helping them live independent lives where they are not a full time burden on the state.

IIRC the Russians did succeed with SEAD. For the first week of the invasion, Ukrainian air defences were a absolute mess due to a number of factors. It is one thing the Russians did well, which is one reason they could actually get airborne troops as far as Hostomel.
But the Ukrainians relatively quickly managed to cobble together systems that worked, just well enough.

China has no need to. Boeing is doing a good enough job by itself.
As someone who loves studying engineering failures (as every good engineer should...), I wonder if there's a good study of where Boeing has gone so utterly wrong? There are the common tropes, e.g. about the McDonald Douglas takeover in 1997, but there must be much more in-depth detail that is worth studying. They are failing on so many projects, from civil aviation, to aerospace, to military planes.
Boeing has excellent engineers who will want to do a great job. And they do, mostly. But they just cannot seem to get it quite good enough: and my suspicion (and that of many others) is that it is down to management.
It's actually on all parties. Which is why the smart ones are not pointing fingers at the other parties.
What happened was this
1) Grooming gangs existed and evolved. 2) The system of social care changed from virtual imprisonment to a more open model. 3) 2) was done, perhaps ironically, because of abuse being rife in the system. 4) The grooming gangs moved into the space created and expanded. 5) The social workers looked on and could do nothing. The Police entered the mode of "too many crimes, plus they are willing. Eyes shut, nothing to see here" 6) knowledge of what was happening percolated up the system. An interesting exercise in the psychology of Not Knowing The Bad Thing That I Don't Want To Know, mainly. 7) When senior people (politicians and officials) were forced into knowing, they often asked questions. The firm response from the system was Do Nothing. As with the Post Office, enquiries died in a murky out of "advice" 8) the pyramid of Not Knowing But Knowing spread upwards. 9) Someone put forward a bill to parliament that would have made reporting the truth a criminal offence. It was defeated. 10) In the wake of an attempt to use organised sexual abuse as a political weapon, Teressa May announced that all allegations would be investigated. 11) This provoked horror from The System - they knew what was coming. 12) The Thing That Can't Be Named On PB happened. Even at this point, some tried to say that This Isn't The Abuse You Should Be Looking For. 13) The whole thing unravelled. 14) 7-8 cover just about everyone in government, politicians, civil servants, third sector etc for decades. Many, many people knew.
This is by far the best summary of the whole sorry scenario.

Because maintaining air coverage at that distance from home is extremely expensive. And costly in terms of airframe flight hours (quite a lot of Israel's airforce is quite old) and pilot fatigue.

General comment - if you look at both perpetrators of violent crime and victims of violent crime they are disproportionately from single parent fatherless households I think last time I had a look it was around 5x the expected rate or something alarming like that.

EDIT: Our Bestest Friends, the NU10K are up to their eyeballs in this.

Everyone plausibly affected gets a monthly amount, non-refundable and it stops only when state has
properly investigated and decided no further compensation is due. Or indeed an extra payment needs to be made.
That would help victims in the meantime, help government to budget the cost and also maybe incentivise govt to hurry up a bit.

Two independent failures in one flight - very rare, almost unheard of.
Two simultaneously? Within fractions of a second? Nah. There is a common cause or an error.
I think this one area where we should not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. What the victims deserve is some help to put their lives back on track - financial compensation plus other therapeutic help, removal of convictions for drunkenness etc.,. and that help is needed now - not in a decade.
I think many on PPrune noted that it would explain everything including the mayday and including the behaviour of the aeroplane. Also, as has been noted, it is not necessarily, or even likely independent as one engine failure might affect the other somehow.
