We had some tradesmen around yesterday to fix a couple of things in the house. They appear to have done a good job.
However, looking at the paper invoice they left, they: *) Misspelt my name. *) Put the incorrect date (it was not March...) *) Had my email address incorrect. Despite having contacted them by email.
It's odd how, when they left, I felt they had done a good job. Having seen these errors, I've started to have doubts...
Which would you prefer? A shit tradesman with impeccable grammar or an illiterate but competent tradesman. Perhaps the Venn diagram barely touches.
As seen on twitter, we’ve been told for 30 years (which is roughly coterminous with Netanyahu’s corrupt leadership) that Iran is on the verge of developing a nuclear bomb. Those Iranians really are perfectionists.
Odd that no one questions the Israelis nuclear weapons. A question the BBC studiously avoids
At least Israel is a peace loving nation that is no threat to its neighbours.
When you thought Israel couldn't be hated by any more nations than it alreaddy is.....I bumped into an elderly Armenian neighbour and by way of conversation mentioned the attack on Iran which she clearly knew nothing about. But instead I got a twenty minute lesson on how the ghastly Israeli's are booting the Armenians out of Jerusalem!
I'm now going to have to do some reading.....
The far right Israelis have - unsurprisingly - been complete wankers to the Armenians in Jerusalem. You’d think that Israeli Jews - of all people - would have some sympathy for the one other “European” people to have suffered an actual genocide in modern times. But no
It is very sad to see what’s happened to Israel. I am naturally pro-Israel. It has a right to defend itself. I loathe islamism…
But much of it has apparently been taken over by the worst kind of ethno-nationalists, devoid of redeeming features
And its attack on Iran, which is justified - not least by the report released just yesterday on Iran's breaches of its nuclear deal obligations - will now only be seen in the context of Israel's wider wars and be criticised because of what Israel is doing in Gaza and the West Bank.
Frankly, at this stage, Iran and Israel are two cheeks of the same arse.

The path to peace requires being prepared to fight, and preventing regimes like Iran from having WMDs.
Iran must never be allowed to get nukes. America should have used its power to act, but TACO Trump is too chicken to do it. Thank goodness that Israel are there to do the good work that needed doing.

The labour minister on that show tried to claim that “most people in the boats are women children and babies”
He actually said that. Like we can’t all see with our own eyes or read the official data
It was such a bare faced lie it went far beyond gaslighting. I wonder if he actually believes it in some mad woke parallel universe
Labour are proving themselves to be the worst caricature of a woke liberal city dwelling lefty party. They are going to get smashed at the election if they keep going like this.
Yes. See the reaction of that QT audience. Total and understandable disbelief. And then he says “I’m going to challenge the audience” - right after that incredible bare faced lie
The audience is the electorate. Labour will get total and absolute disbelief at an election and they will deservedly be consigned to oblivion
The awfulness of every single election or by election result should give them a good hint at what's coming

The minister clearly has swallowed the propaganda that they are economic migrants, in which case we would expect women and families on the boats. Instead, as we have previously discussed, they are mainly young men escaping conscription, war or gang war. Setting fire to the Middle East will not help.
Indeed
From the Migration Observatory, on arrivals crossing the Channel in small boats in the 12 months up to March 31, 2024: • 75 % adult males (aged 18+) • 16 % children (under 18) • The remaining 9 % are mostly adult females (with a very small “unknown” category)
It’s quite shocking that a Labour minister can simply come on telly and unashamedly lie to the British people on a really serious matter, and everyone just shrugs. Like this is now normal
Or maybe I still have a shred of foolish naivety
Your hero Boris Johnson changed the political landscape when it came to telling bare-faced lies. Previously the political strategy was to obfuscate, but in the post Johnson and Trump era it is acceptable to lie and keep lying. Johnson has given cover to Labour politicians, (particularly the CV fraudster Rachel Reeves), to tell lies under the excuse that "the other lot" were worse. It is a tragic development in our political life.
That's cute that you think outright lying began with Johnson. I bet you actually even believe it.
All my adult life (Blair onwards) PMs have told outright lies. Blair told many, many, many of them. Johnson was bad on that, I don't disagree, and although I liked him overall that was one characteristic I disliked . . . but he was not the beginning.
No idea if Blair was the beginning of the outright lies, before my time, I can't think of any outright lies from Major or Thatcher.

I’m not sure Boris began all this. Eg the British establishment lied about the nature and purpose of the EU for many years - lies which led quite directly to Brexit. But I agree Boris definitely made it a lot worse
When he came to power I was hoping he’d be like Prince Hal in Shakespeare when made king. And put aside childish things: becoming Henry V. Saying to Falstaff “I know thee not, old man”
Instead he embraced his inner Falstaff
Those of us with a little better understanding of the human condition recognised him as Falstaff from the moment of his tragically damaging emergence into public life.
With respect to your comments on "the establishment" lying (of which Johnson is most definitely a part, contrary to what his gullible apologists believe). I personally think that this is provable nonsense. At most the political class might be accused of obfuscation with respect to the European project. The fact that the average leave voter was too thick to be able to read openly available literature on the subject is a sad indictment of our education system, and disinterest in politics. As I mentioned in the previous post there is a significant demarcation between obfuscation and outright political lie. Johnson was a pioneer in the latter.
Oh do shut up. Of course they lied about the EU. They lied about the constitution. They lied about Lisbon. They lied about referendums - promising them then refusing them. They lied they lied they lied
“Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth, sooner or later the debt must be paid”
We paid that in the form of Brexit. A tragic rupture whether you are Leave or Remain
We are now building up a vast trove of lies on migration and asylum and the rest, it will have the same explosive result, I fear
Bob's embedded walk-and-talk video helpfully includes a screenshot of the last time this former immigration minister proposed such a law. It seems to be dated March 2024. Bloody Keir Starmer and his time machine!
I don't believe Bob believes he was ever in Government, so can we clear that up please? And I am sure he was warning about the Starmerwave since it was introduced in 2019.
Q. What have Enoch Powell and Robert Jenrick got in common? A. They are both from Wolverhampton.
Does he have figures for the number of white city gents convicted of financial frauds?
The murderous terror campaigns against young women and girls in this country in the 70s,80s and 90s were conducted by the likes of Robert Black and Peter Tobin who were white Scots. If we broaden the brush to Levi Belfield and John ( taxi cab rapist) Warboys they were white Londoners. And Sutcliffe and Donald Nielson were white and from Yorkshire. On Jenrick's extrapolation, hoardes of vigilante women could have a field day with blaming white middle aged men for their compromised safety.
And these were rare enough over 30 years that you know all their names.

I'm not sure I agree with that. There were plenty of liars in public life before Boris - Blair/Campbell's dishonesty was notorious.
Also, Boris lied or was wrong about trivia, like whether he obeyed stupid rules that made no sense under COVID. But in terms of government policy, which is surely what matters, he delivered roughly what he promised - big-state Conservatism and the implementation of the people's expressed democratic wish to leave the EU. I don't agree with much of what he did, and he failed in some areas, like housebuilding, but overall he was fairly honest when it came to what he was elected for.
Compare him with Starmer, for instance, whose first act as Labour leader was to trash all the pledges he had made to be elected, making excuses so preposterous that they are insulting to intelligence, or whose main act in economic policy was to raise a tax on working people, having repeatedly promised not to raise taxes on working people.
It's not an appetising choice, but I'd go with a politician who is honest about policy, even if he lies about trivial details like having drinks in his own house.
He lied to parliament. Anyone that does not think that is very serious, and understand the implications of that and the line that he crossed is clearly an idiot.

Getting an email or date right doesn't require an A-level in English or Maths. The trades can be highly technical jobs and basic finance skills are a big part of it.
The best test is whether they have a tidy dashboard and whether they apologise for not taking their shoes off (obviously they should not but it's the sentiment). Extra points if they complement the work of the last person rather than the usual "cowboy" spiel.

Some pure Chilesy shit there.
And your point is?
Nobody cares
If that's the case, then PB would be filled with such responses to many posts. Particularly from the two people who most responded.
Besides, there is a point. In trades, and politics, presentation can matter as much, if not more, than actual delivery.

He says "Send border force out there, as soon as the dinghies leave French waters we turn them round, send them back."
But - correct me if I'm wrong - the problem with this seemingly obvious solution is that the French won't take them back once they have left French waters.
As an example of how politics has shifted, in the Morley and Outwood seat, Tory/Lab got 97% combined in 2017 and 2019 it was 92% in a five horse seat. Last night in the chunky Morley South ward they got 15% between them coming 4th and 6th. Even in 2022 they were getting 50% between them in the same ward
The Israeli attack on Iran looks increasingly audacious and clever. They’ve taken out half of Iran’s leadership. They’ve paralysed Tehran
Unbelievable stuff
“Similar patterns to the Hezbollah attack. This will likely be revealed as one of the largest operations in modern history. Well-protected sites, top regime officials and key scientists are being targeted. The culmination of decades of Israeli intelligence work inside Iran.”
Mossad agents smuggled weapons into Iran and destroyed Iran’s missile capability from within. So now Iran is defenceless and Israel is pounding the nuclear sites. They won’t stop until it is all pulverised
In this instance I am entirely pro Israel. Go Jerusalem. I hope they take out the entire Iranian elite and the Iranian people are liberated

Why? WHY? Who benefits from this? Five years after Wuhan and they’re still making new viruses that can kill humanity
What was unclear from this is whether the research is US-sponsored or a South Korean initiative. Something about the references to The White House makes me think it may be the former.
Either way, those responsible should be facing criminal proceedings.
Morning all. Grim stuff from the ME, obviously israel is now all in, things will escalate rapidly. Worth keeping an eye on Tehran as theres a non zero chance of an uprising against the Ayatollahs regime. What and who Iran hits determines if this goes much wider
The historical evidence is more to the contrary. The Iranian people are more likely to rally round the flag than to depose the regime.

It is a tragic development in our political life.
Christ, there is no helping some people is there? Johnson lied about brexit, about levelling up, about how many hospitals he was going to build and no-one still knows how many father's day cards he's going to get on Sunday.

"Send border force out there, as soon as the dinghies leave French waters we turn them round, send them back.. That's how you smash the gangs"
"And instead of saying lets build more homes for immigrants, lets have less immigrants for homes"
He says "Send border force out there, as soon as the dinghies leave French waters we turn them round, send them back."
But - correct me if I'm wrong - the problem with this seemingly obvious solution is that the French won't take them back once they have left French waters.
What sort of cretin is going to vote for Labour again?
Agree. Much rather they did this kind of thing rather than pulverising Gaza.

Yes.
The problem is some legal niceties.
I have a solution.
1) Hire* the Libyan Coastguard to patrol up and down the Channel 2) They kidnap any migrants 3) Store them in Libya with the rest of their collection 4) Actually, since they hire out the labour of their captives to local Libyan farmers - perhaps we should charge the Libyan Coastguard for the... fishing rights? 5) This solution is already funded by the EU, in the Mediterranean. So it's all ECHR compliant, being Good Europeans etc

It shows that the IDF is quite capable of striking precisely at its enemies.
Widespread civilian casualties in Gaza are a choice, not a necessity.
Personally if they can do the work to an excellent level , I do not care whether they can even write an invoice, know what date it is etc.

Hear hear
@Dura_Ace’s retort to you was clever and funny. But I nonetheless support your right to come on here and talk personal irrelevant stuff all day long, from your marathon runs to your minor problems with tradesmen, not least because I talk about me, irrelevantly, all the time
As we all agree, this is a pub. You don’t censor people in pubs. You ignore them if they bore you or irritate you, but otherwise do no harm
Long live the PB regulars. We probably need some kind of group chant. Like “all for one” or “kernow bys vyken” or “eia eia alala!”

The labour minister on that show tried to claim that “most people in the boats are women children and babies”
He actually said that. Like we can’t all see with our own eyes or read the official data
It was such a bare faced lie it went far beyond gaslighting. I wonder if he actually believes it in some mad woke parallel universe
Churchill used the phrase 'terminological inexactitude' in 1906 so I suspect lying was going on then.

This is one of those situations where there simply is no good route.
We know Iran is close to obtaining nukes. We also know that they now feel unrestrained from attacking Israel. And we know they are a cruel, brutal regime who destabilise the wider ME.
We also know that the gloves are off in Israel and they appear no longer restrained by Western condemnation of their actions in Gaza.
They have calculated that if they wanted to go, they had to go now. I fear for the prospect of a wider Middle Eastern war but I wonder if this was all not made inevitable some time ago. Can I say I regret that it has come to this? Yes, but I also regret that we are in the position where Iran was about to develop the bomb.

Tom McTague, new editor of The New Statesman, has written about Sir Keir after spending lots of time with him … and John Rentoul seems to think McTague is not impressed.
”Yet he seems to come away from his time spent with Starmer with a sense of frustration and disappointment. He sets off on a weeks-long project asking what connects Labour’s missions and milestones: “How do they form a coherent analysis of what has gone wrong in Britain and, therefore, what the government needs to do to fix it? Over the next few weeks, I will come back to these questions again and again, and wonder whether the nation will ever hear a convincing answer to them.”
McTague says of Starmer: “He seems reluctant to poke at the reasons the country is so tense and angry and poor, to analyse the cause of the country’s malaise.”
One striking feature of the profile is that Starmer’s aides seem to have a clearer idea of the government’s purpose than the prime minister himself. One of them is quoted as saying: “If you don’t give people hope, you will get the alternative – the destruction of failing institutions.”
McTague comments: “On one level the prime minister appears intellectually to understand the challenge, even sometimes to agree with the analysis. And yet on another, he does not seem able – or willing – to channel such thoughts in a way that the country understands.””
Israeli sources saying they expect the operation to last two weeks. In your dreams.
Is that Russian SMO weeks (about 10-15 years)?
Sounds right!
All be over by Xmas vibe to it.
I think the key difference with Ukraine/Russia is that the two countries don't share a border so neither can plausibly invade the other.
What I think we are looking at is an exchange of missiles/drones plus potentially special forces involvement. We could also see Iran use terror attacks against western targets. I would also expect Hezbollah to attack again with anything they have left.
The interesting thing to me is that Israel hasn't targetted the Supreme Leader. That may be because they can't get to him or because they think attacking a religious leader would set off too much of a backlash.

Hopefully. Though don't underestimate the naughtiness they could do with what they've already got - e.g. dirty bombs.
But I really worry about biological and chemical weapons, more than nukes.
Patrick Maguire writing about voters wanting to see tangible results, and referencing the Boris “hanging baskets” theory that was sniffed at on here
Starmer and Reeves have yet to master this same dynamic. But we now see they recognise it too. Having struggled for months to achieve any sense of fellow feeling with the public, they are ditching unpopular policy in the hope that big spending on symbolic change will earn them a hearing. No 10’s polling shows voters want tangible improvements to their local areas and services, and Reeves has decided to invest in them directly rather than enhance council budgets that would only be drained by social care. Rachel Wolf, co-author of Boris Johnson’s 2019 manifesto — the document that still delineates the true centre ground of British politics better than anything said or written since — called this the “hanging baskets” school of public policy. Without spending on the physical fabric of otherwise forgotten places, declinism is an unstoppable force.
Reform has lost another one through a loophole in their world-leading vetting system, this one a Councillor Candidate a week before an election - "failed to disclose":

The Speaker of Congress, Mike Johnson, said Newsom ought to be tarred and feathered. As we know, in the USA this has been most used around alleged treachery, particularly those who resisted segregation. In early years having been used on supporters of the British Empire. Personally, I think the message there is about the MAGA mental hinterland.

In that case they should probably be a bit less worried about describing every unsympathetic word about them as antisemitism or blood libel. That Israel does that endlessly suggests that they're desperate to get sympathy but are just really shit at it.

It’s quite a bizarre lie because it is so obviously and blatantly untrue. How could those words emerge from his mouth? And brain? It’s like saying “the Eiffel Tower is less than twenty feet in height”
Weird

Has bombing ever led to regime change? It seems overly optimistic to imagine that these attacks on Iran will lead to regime change.
Saddam.
Nope, there was a land invasion in 2003, remember?
Yes, but the bombing seems to have almost destroyed the regime first, from what I remember.
That could have been exaggerated, ofcourse.
The 'mission accomplished' photo op was certainly ill judged.
Netanyahu of course was very pro Iraq war. He's a bit gung ho for war in general.
This is nothing to do with Netanyahu nor with continuing the war on Bibi’s behalf
Watch the tv drama series Tehran
Israel will never accept a nuclear armed Iran as it is a mortal threat to the entire Jewish state. As long as Israel is able and willing to do so, it will therefore check Iran before it reaches nuclear armed status. That’s the ethos that underpins Tehran the series, it’s made plain this has been Israel’s stance for decades and will be in the future
And obvs this amazing attack has been in the planning for many years - like the Hezbollah pager attack. It’s not something Bibi concocted in April on his Tod
The only reason it is happening now is because this is the right moment for multiple military and geopolitical reasons
Israel may have war objectives that require more than 24 hours of airstrikes, but I don't think they have the same incentives to drag out a conflict with Iran as they do in Gaza, and the downsides from a protracted conflict are also greater.
All the signs so far are that the attacks on Iran are very well targeted and have aimed to cause maximum damage in the minimum amount of time. So it looks like they will intend to be done soon.
The uncertainty is how Iran respond, particularly if Israel have effectively destroyed their long-range drone and missile capability.
And its still going. Australia were favourites anyway but this a match winning partnership beyond a doubt.
Finished now but surely Australia out of sight.
Beyond a doubt? I'm not sure. 281 is a challenging target, but the pitch and the weather have become increasingly docile. You never know. (I remember the greatest innings of my youth, when Greenidge scored 200+ for WI as they chased down well over 300 on the final day - I think at Lords, but could have been the Oval. I think they only lost a couple of wickets).

It's unbelievable that someone could operate at the highest levels of electoral politics and not know the most basic facts about one of the most pressing issues facing the country.

I think they have one card left to play. Sky News had a Iranian shill on this morning and he said explicitly that they'd bring down the world economy if needed (by blocking the Strait of Hormuz). I note their relations with Saudi have improved. They might deteriorate again should Iran do that.
"I voted Labour, and if there was an election tomorrow I would still vote Labour, but they would lose and we would be under a Reform government"
"A government with no plan and no clue what they're doing"
"Send border force out there, as soon as the dinghies leave French waters we turn them round, send them back.. That's how you smash the gangs"
"And instead of saying lets build more homes for immigrants, lets have less immigrants for homes"
The labour minister on that show tried to claim that “most people in the boats are women children and babies”
He actually said that. Like we can’t all see with our own eyes or read the official data
It was such a bare faced lie it went far beyond gaslighting. I wonder if he actually believes it in some mad woke parallel universe
As you are not very bright you might be forgiven for not understanding the word "obfuscation". It is different to lying. You might want to look it up and improve your limited lexicon. Have a lovely day!
I am aware of the word, being well educated even if I have some different principles to you. What Blair did was tell actual, outright, lies. Many of which have been documented already in this thread and many more could be too.
Is it bad? Yes. Would it be better if it didn't happen? Yes.
Sadly, since Blair at least (and possibly before) lying, and not just obfuscation, has been tolerated.
Comments
Frankly, at this stage, Iran and Israel are two cheeks of the same arse.
The path to peace requires being prepared to fight, and preventing regimes like Iran from having WMDs.
Iran must never be allowed to get nukes. America should have used its power to act, but TACO Trump is too chicken to do it. Thank goodness that Israel are there to do the good work that needed doing.
At least Leon provides entertaining insights and pics through his lived experience.
Well done!

The best test is whether they have a tidy dashboard and whether they apologise for not taking their shoes off (obviously they should not but it's the sentiment). Extra points if they complement the work of the last person rather than the usual "cowboy" spiel.
Besides, there is a point. In trades, and politics, presentation can matter as much, if not more, than actual delivery.
But - correct me if I'm wrong - the problem with this seemingly obvious solution is that the French won't take them back once they have left French waters.
Last night in the chunky Morley South ward they got 15% between them coming 4th and 6th. Even in 2022 they were getting 50% between them in the same ward
Either way, those responsible should be facing criminal proceedings.
*present company excepted.
The problem is some legal niceties.
I have a solution.
1) Hire* the Libyan Coastguard to patrol up and down the Channel
2) They kidnap any migrants
3) Store them in Libya with the rest of their collection
4) Actually, since they hire out the labour of their captives to local Libyan farmers - perhaps we should charge the Libyan Coastguard for the... fishing rights?
5) This solution is already funded by the EU, in the Mediterranean. So it's all ECHR compliant, being Good Europeans etc
Just
Widespread civilian casualties in Gaza are a choice, not a necessity.
However looking back I realise this was probably her way of saying she’d quite like me to do that to her, but she was too shy to make it an outright request
This would make an excellent if surprising Adrian Chiles column
A man js allowed to hope amid the darkness. And the fog of the Faroes
I had my first gay sex last night.
Rectum?
Yes, they could hardly walk.

And still crazy

But I really worry about biological and chemical weapons, more than nukes.

Merseyside Reform candidate removed as social media posts surface week before election
A spokesperson for the party called the posts "unacceptable"http://liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/merseyside-reform-candidate-removed-social-31837830
A Reform UK spokesman said: "Ms Davidson failed to disclose her social media account to the vetting team. As a result of her unacceptable comments she was swiftly expelled from the party and support for her candidacy has been withdrawn.
"Reform UK is completely opposed to any form of discrimination."
The unsuitability is a little bit absolutely bloody obvious. Perhaps .. er .. check?:
Question: Will this be a "ballot papers have been printed, so we can't remove the brand" situation?
…sorry, I meant making stuff up
1 - An address / presser by Gavin Newsom responding to Trump's nationalisation of the National Guard - which are a State force. There is a remarkable defence of the importance of law and order.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwh05o3UTn0
The Speaker of Congress, Mike Johnson, said Newsom ought to be tarred and feathered. As we know, in the USA this has been most used around alleged treachery, particularly those who resisted segregation. In early years having been used on supporters of the British Empire. Personally, I think the message there is about the MAGA mental hinterland.
2 - Does anyone have a good place to follow the No Kings protests, and Mr Trump's Birthday Tank Parade?
Perhaps all the papers be running live blogs, or covering on their news blogs.

But he won't. For two reasons.
1: He wouldn't know the right thing to do if it slapped him in the face.
2: 🌮
