@BlancheLivermore why do you care so much about a tv series? I haven’t seen it and I don’t care.
Because Starmer has turned it into semi-official propaganda
And he keeps accidentally calling it fact rather than fiction
Is he doing it stupidly or deliberately?
Who cares? There are more important things going on
How dare you
Adolescence is the most important TV show ever
All the lefties, like the PM, told me that already
It must shown in schools, apparently..
Maybe it should be shown in schools. Who cares?
Sensible people who don't think that it's worthwhile educational material?
Nah. I haven’t seen it but it’s the same people who are irrationally angry about it are also the same people who think any criticism of white men is woke or racist or both. You need to get out more
How many lessons at school would have to be missed by watching Adolescence?
If it's more than half, fuck off
Is it the programme you object to? Or the teaching about the dangers of misogyny on social media?
Presumably if you think the latter is a suitable subject for secondary schools, how would you teach it and with what supporting materials?
I do have to giggle. I poke a stick at the PB Angry Right and they respond predictably.

Maths would be old school
Nobody gets out of primary school without knowing their times tables, up to 15
I think the use of calculators etc is just ingrained now. I was doing an interview the other day and the candidate used a calculator for 20 x 10. Really.
Could have been worse, they could have ChatGPT'd it?

Mysogyny absolutely needs to be a subject raised at secondary school as does racism and homophobia etc. I don't however think this is a good way its too sensationalist. It ends in murder....mostly those things don't. Yes we need to tackle them I agree.....making them sensationalist I think personally sends the wrong message
Here's the problem. Women have to be careful. Consider where they are going. What they are wearing. Who knows where they are. Girls are having to be raised to manage the threat against them.
The threat isn't from Trans which can be solved by bathroom rules - as Badenoch says. The threat is from men and from boys who have had masculinity perverted and weaponised.
I get the pushback. Men don't want to accept that we are the problem. But we are/. At which point do we man up and do something about it? We've successfully addressed issues about mental health. How about we address issues about treating women like property that we have rights over? Bloody incel - as if men have *any* rights for sex with anyone who doesn't want to.
But yeah, the PM addressing the issue is the problem. Not the endless numbers of women murdered and raped and assaulted and afraid.

I have few issues with TV drama being used as a jumping off point for education. There was a huge fuss some years back about watching Blackadder Goes Forth in a lesson on the Great War. IIRC it was just that - a start point to develop further. Of course certain types of media liked to suggest that it was simply watching the programme…
I have no problem if schools want to use it....I do have a problem if its dictated schools have to use it. The former is they can fit it into their curriculum and helps them with mysogyny...a good thing...the latter is they have to show it anyway without a teaching context alongside it

If you can't do basic arithmetic then you can't work out when you've made a key entry error in your calculator for a more complicated calculation. And that's when things get dangerous, because it ends with the wrong dosage being given by orders of magnitude, or a building that can't support its own weight.

Good. For the record, as sensational a production Adolescence is, I don't think *anyone* is suggesting that it be shown in schools in its entirety.
I remember lots of TV being shown in school. Short sections of things. Used to illustrate an issue. With discussion and work following.
There is very clearly something in the program which can be useful in combatting the toxic masculinity "uppity bitchez are the problem brothers" narrative which has flourished.
They had a female pollster on the 5PM News who said trumps numbers were going down very fast. I can't get it easily but here is a different finding from yesterday
Glad to see that Tories are standing up for the Real Issues such as Adolescence.
Meanwhile, in the actual real world, you have to ask how the US-China war de-escalates.
China is now in a position to destroy America. Trade has effectively stopped - and American consumers want and need the stuff sat in those shipping containers that are on stop. China? Increase trade with notAmerica by only 6% and it need not ship anything to China.
Worse for America - China owns an awful lot of American debt. Even if it only stops buying it, that's really bad for America. The chaos in the bond market yesterday saw the handbrake pulled.
Imagine if China starts dumping its positions...
I thought that the Chinese had already been reducing their exposure to US treasuries over the last several years?

Propaganda means things to be spread
The PM said it should be shown in schools
When I went to a British Library exhibition about propaganda, there was a whole section dedicated to tuberculosis propaganda
Do you know your own language?
Didn’t know he was Italian?
I think that some latin gerundives have been English longer than us
@BlancheLivermore why do you care so much about a tv series?

I remember watching the first 15 minutes of Gladiator to learn about Roman military tactics or some rubbish

But Kemi says the issue of concern isn't toxic masculinity but Islamic terrorism.

I never claimed men aren't the problem, however it is a limited number of men. I think most men would agree with what you say. I made a point to say I would as well. I think the problem comes from teaching all women that all men are there enemies when its like maybe 10 to 20% of us are. Is that a problem hell yes and needs to be addressed but the majority of men are really not a danger to women in my view

"I don't think *anyone* is suggesting that it be shown in schools in its entirety."
Maybe I am wrong, but isn't that exactly what Starmer is suggesting? Otherwise no one would be talking about this in a political sense
"The prime minister told them the show was "at times harrowing" but had "lit a touch paper" under the debate about the issues.
"We've been watching with our children - my boy is 16, my girl is 14 - and I have to say, I found it really hard," he told BBC political editor Chris Mason.
It was so arresting, he said, because "in a sense, what happens in the drama could really happen anywhere, and almost happen to any child".
It shone a light "on misogyny, on online content, and this sense of children, particularly boys, getting drawn in to this world", he said.
But unlike some things the government deals with, "there isn't an obvious policy response which will answer all of these questions", he added.
"It's much broader than that. It's a cultural issue, and therefore we're going to have to look more broadly, work as a society on this, and discuss it, which is why I'm really pleased that Adolescence is now going to be shown in schools free because I do think young people should be watching it.""
They had a female pollster on the 5PM News who said trumps numbers were going down very fast. I can't get it easily but here is a different finding from yesterday

No, you can't. You defined propaganda as "things to be spread"
Which is literally Maths, History, Biology etc. Why did I pick those three? Because all three have been literal propaganda when taught in school at various times in the past. Biology and History are still taught as propaganda in some American schools.
But even if we only teach normal maths. It is a thing, to be spread. Which you described as propaganda.
I get it. Respect for women being taught in schools is a terrible thing. Its an opinion. But with all due respect, there is a reason that Kemi is so spectacularly shit that they're plotting to depose her...

That's a truly pathetic admission
Learn your times tables, then teach them to someone else
You'll be a better mathematician and person by doing so
How many of our teachers think that whacking a video of Adolescence would be a good way to educate their students?
Not having seen it, I couldn't say, but generally I find watching fiction to learn anything factual isn't very effective unless you have a very clear idea of what you are teaching and how you will get it across afterwards.
That's certainly true of anything over ten minutes long.

Saying that boys shouldn't stab girls Saying that girls need to treat boys with respect Saying that boys need to treat girls with respect Saying that we have a real problem with violence against women and girls which starts in school
Propaganda.
I don't think most on the right disagree with that in the least at least in the uk. I am fairly right wing compared to most others here though not what I would describe as far right. I subscribe to all of those statements

Propaganda means things to be spread
The PM said it should be shown in schools
When I went to a British Library exhibition about propaganda, there was a whole section dedicated to tuberculosis propaganda
Do you know your own language?
Is Maths propaganda? History? Biology?
I know that you can tell the difference
I can. Apparently you cannot.
I can tell the difference between fictional Netflix dramas and maths
A few months ago you couldn't tell the difference between bullshit on the internet about Starmer and reality.

Nobody gets out of primary school without knowing their times tables, up to 15
I wouldn't get out of primary school now on that metric due to failing maths.
And I have a maths degree.
Very worrying.
Ditto. I have a maths degree also and have never learnt my times tables. People confuse a memory test with actual maths. Learning your times table is not maths. Trouble is learning your times table does not equip you with anything outside of that boundary. Learning maths properly equips you to deal with problems you haven't encountered before.
That's a truly pathetic admission
Learn your times tables, then teach them to someone else
You'll be a better mathematician and person by doing so

The question is *who* is talking about this in political terms. And why.
Well Starmer introduced the subject I think, and it has followed from there - Badenoch being repeatedly asked whether she has watched it, and kind of attacked when she said she hasn't. It appears that in the media's eyes she is now the bad guy for not having watched it, which seems a bit much

The problem is people's minds work in different ways. For some, learning the tables by rote might be best. For others, calculating them quickly in their head might be best. And the great thing about that is that it is extensible: the same techniques can also be used to multiply larger numbers.
Like a lot of learning, a lot depends on what works best for the individual.
And why does it matter, as long as someone get the correct answer quickly?

But Kemi says the issue of concern isn't toxic masculinity but Islamic terrorism.
Can we not be concerned with both?
I think there's a danger of appearing to tell all followers of Islam that they are terrorists and all young men that they are dangerous and toxic, especially as regards women.
It would be good to hear more about the overwhelming majority who are really rather great.

It's really reflective of the hole the Conservatives are still in. I remember from 97-03 it was really open season from the media on any Tory on any subject and especially the leader - Sometimes justified and sometimes not so justified.
Kemi is doing the right thing sticking to her guns. At least by not watching it and calmly saying why, she remains authentic.

The BBC show "Numberblocks" is absolutely different class in getting kids to know their numbers/times tables. Couldn't recommend it enough.
Dominic Cummings wrote an interesting piece on his substack about the poor way UK kids are taught Maths compared to other countries; there were several books recommended to help youngsters, which I have bought for when my kids are a bit older

Don't go into a Dublin branch on holiday. Won't take British club cards. Which is fine for points-accumulation, because it's a different system in a different country. But you don't get the discount! Presumably applies to Irish citizens in NI too. And you can't sign up without an Irish credit card.

And why does it matter, as long as someone get the correct answer quickly?
The BBC show "Numberblocks" is absolutely different class in getting kids to know their numbers/times tables. Couldn't recommend it enough.
Dominic Cummings wrote an interesting piece on his substack about the poor way UK kids are taught Maths compared to other countries; there were several books recommended to help youngsters, which I have bought for when my kids are a bit older
That's why , if it is to be to taught at all, it should be in small groups with good facilitators so the students lead the teaching. I would also structure the groups so the boys and girls are in the same groups and the boys not sitting in gangs, with the facilitators making sure that the girls voices are heard and the students tie it in to their own experiences.
If not controlled well by the facilitators it could go very very badly wrong.
How many of our teachers think that watching a video of Adolescence would be a good way to educate their students?
We can make our kids watch the original Star Wars to warn them of the dangers of creating planet-destroying super-weapons?
We should show it to Trump to point out the downsides of mucking up trade systems.
As for Adolescence, I can't imagine many (any?) schools having the time to watch the whole thing. And I haven't watched it. Having said that, the issues it raises are incredibly relevant and appropriate scenes might be a very good way into the necessary conversations with pupils.
(And if KB didn't want to be asked if she has seen it all the time, she shouldn't have slagged it off based on what she read on Twitter.)
Went to Tescos today and paid £2.25 for my broccoli instead a pound, because I forgot my club card. First thing that came to mind was that I felt like I was on the wrong end of one of Trump's tariffs
Not long ago Lidl was conspicuous for being inexpensive and simple. Sadly they have joined this complex game in which some stuff is cheaper for Group X who have joined Scheme Y, which means remembering to take stuff with you, correctly scanning it etc, and it slows down and complicates the process.

Im sure you put this much energy into all other aspects of the curriculum too.
If I had the chance..
Maths would be old school
Nobody gets out of primary school without knowing their times tables, up to 15
I wouldn't get out of primary school now on that metric due to failing maths.
You'll be a better mathematician and person by doing so
No, I wouldn't be. Learning times table by heart would just mean I can calculate things marginally quicker. The hard part of proper maths problems is the logic behind it, not the numerical processing.
I think it's better to have the tools to quickly calculate different sums. I would calculate 13 x 15 the same way as I would 283 x 15. By quickly breaking down each sum into solvable parts. You still get to the result in seconds.
I think that is a far more valuable thing to learn than memorising a set number of multiplications by rote.

Download the Tesco app to your phone.
Just save the barcode in Google wallet, or take a screenshot. The app can be slow to load in store.

I think the use of calculators etc is just ingrained now. I was doing an interview the other day and the candidate used a calculator for 20 x 10. Really.

Warning - if you watch it wear noise cancelling headphones or you will have the theme tune stuck in your head continually. Even worse than most kids TV programs

I like to think it's a subtle in-joke from Starmer. Episode 2 is all about a failing school where the teachers have resorted to just showing TV shows and films.

The PM said it should be shown in schools
When I went to a British Library exhibition about propaganda, there was a whole section dedicated to tuberculosis propaganda

I remember lots of TV being shown in school. Short sections of things. Used to illustrate an issue. With discussion and work following.
There is very clearly something in the program which can be useful in combatting the toxic masculinity "uppity bitchez are the problem brothers" narrative which has flourished.

Hand jobs, all from China.
A combination of not wanting their investment devalued by QE, and not wanting to lose the lot when they invade Taiwan.
Strange because his white brother was convicted of the racist murder of a black lad.

That's certainly true of anything over ten minutes long.
