Britain is backing plans for a Nuremberg-style trial of Vladimir Putin in the face of opposition from Donald Trump.
The UK will support proposals at the Council of Europe next month calling for Russians to be prosecuted for “crimes of aggression” during the invasion of Ukraine.
The idea would involve setting up a military tribunal, modelled on the Nazi trials after the Second World War, to prosecute Russian leaders and generals for war crimes.
Some lawyers, including Sir Keir Starmer’s long-time friend Philippe Sands, have suggested the ad hoc court should be established specifically to deal with crimes of aggression, which are defined by the United Nations as “invasion or attack by the armed forces of a state on the territory of another state, or any military occupation”.
Some Western countries, including the UK, have said that Russians should be tried on those grounds for the political decision to invade, not only for war crimes committed on Ukrainian soil once the war began.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague cannot examine the “crime of aggression”, and is not recognised by either Russia or the US.
The plan for a new court to examine crimes of aggression was first suggested in 2022. It was backed by the Ukrainian government and Joe Biden’s administration, which sent funding and American prosecutors to help set it up.
However, Donald Trump withdrew all US involvement in the plan after his inauguration in January, as part of his strategy to be more conciliatory towards Moscow.
“I don’t need to watch Casualty to know what's going on in the NHS,” said Kemi Badenoch, when she was asked on the BBC if she had watched Adolescence yet.
The presenters could not believe what they had heard. “Why would you not want to know what people are talking about?”
Badenoch replied that the issues of toxic masculinity and smartphone use are ”important issues and they are issues that I’ve been talking about for some time”. She reminded her interviewers: “It’s a fictional series.”
“You’re comparing Adolescence with Casualty: did you really mean to say that?” A surprising question from a BBC presenter, implying that a Netflix series is more important than a mere BBC soap opera.
Badenoch really did mean to say that, and she is quite right too.

Good for Kemi for sticking to her guns...
Sometimes far too often, the media can be very silly.

Any Russians surviving their foray into the meatgrinder have the real prospect of going to a war crimes trial.
Who'd be a Russian soldier in Putin's 2025 army?
The money is good and has led to a recovery in poorer parts of Russia where soldiers are sending back their pay (and compensation if killed). Just the other day I read of a sociological study of London during the Great War, remarking that unemployment and homelessness had disappeared.

On Reform can anyone explain why they seem to be unaffected by Trump's antics ?
Because we have quite possibly the world's shittest Government, the Tories aren't yet trusted, and people realise we need to get shot of them yesterday regardless of their dislike or otherwise of a foreign potentate or two?
It is true they are not brilliant and their comms are absolutely shocking. Waiting lists down but who knew? 24,000 illegals removed, but who knew? But they have a long way still to fall to reach the dizzying descent of your girl.
In terms of the NHS waiting lists I was surprised how little attention the media gave it . There was good news on waiting lists , extra appointments and cancer treatment. As for Reform they’re just saying yes to any policies that poll well with the public without a clue as to how any would be delivered .
The trouble with NHS waiting lists is that shouting too loudly risks angering those still struggling for GP appointments.
Besides which the drops in waiting lists are less than 0.5% hardly worth shouting about
The fact they're not increasing is achievement enough. But largely down to the prior government, I'd guess. Too soon for Streeting's influence to show.
Doesn't really matter who it is down to they need to drop quicker, 24k out of 7 mill is a drop in the ocean on the whole

Is he stupid?
Does he believe it?
Is he a liar?
From your link, the Prime Minister said, "And it is young boys predominantly, and in this particular instance. But also how can we protect young girls at risk, because obviously that is a very strong feature of the documentary, the drama."
I've said often enough that I think Starmer will follow Wilson in retiring early and for similar reasons, but the Spectator is being a bit naughty here.

Not offhand but I'm sure a search will turn something up. It is no secret that Putin's army is recruited from poorer parts of Russia, remote from Moscow and St Petersburg.

What's the problem with Adolescence. I thought it was amazing. Beyond amazing. Are there some kind of culture war overtones that went over my head. What are the right and left saying (as if it makes any difference, but still...).
I haven't watched it, not out of a refusal to do so, but because I don't watch loads of tv. White Lotus and football
The right are saying "How come the show that is supposedly so realistic is showing the perpetrator as a white boy from a loving, two parent family, when the stats show that black children from broken homes are disproportiate offenders?"
Incidentally, as per @Cyclefree header the other day, I opposed showing Adolescence in schools. Not least because even intelligent adults often misinterpret it, see below on that header.
The narrative now is more Badenoch's refusal to watch and her subsequent angry analysis of something she has never seen. She reminds me of Jasper Carrot's "nutter on the bus" over her response (Islamic terrorism, race switching the guilty and anything else tangential she can think of) to this story.
That is not 'the narrative' except in your head. Read the comments on BBC Breakfast's own Tweet of the video (so not from a right wing commentary account).

Surely a drama can be based on a real case? That doesn't make it a documentary
Stephen Graham has said it was based on two real life incidents I think
Anyway, Starmer has twice called it a documentary, but they were almost certainly just slips of the tongue, he knows it is a drama. Lets not make a documentary out of a crisis!

It isn't a suitable for schools. Maybe teachers or Post 16 Media Sudies. It is too easy to misinterpreted, as we see here, even with those who have actually watched it.
America is a very diverse country I actually think Trump appeals not just to white men of low socio economic status but his aggression and machismo also appeals to latinos and black men. Hence that approval rating.

There was colour blind casting. The police officer and best friend of the victim were black, but could have been any ethnicity. That wasnt the point of the drama..

That’s not colour blind casting. Colour blind casting is paying no attention to ethnicity in casting including within a family, and/or known historical characters. A white boy having a black best friend is not colour blind casting.

Philippe Sands is awesome, proving lawyers are the best of humanity.

My grandfather and his younger brother were in a similar experience. Grandfather was already in a regiment before he was 18 so couldn't lie about his age. His younger brother did & was sent to the front. Grandfather became 18 and was sent to the front just as his brother was being shipped back injured. RIP both.
145% tariffs on goods from China to the US. 84% on goods from the US to China. Both are huge.
And I can only assume China will increase theirs further or take other retaliatory action. We may soon reach a point where direct trade between the two nations grinds to a near halt.
The impact on the global economy will be huge and variable.
I'm sure last year many of the same people who are annoyed that the actor is white were annoyed that:
-There were a disproportionate amount of black actors on TV and this was too high -Roles were being restricted to people of a certain race when it wasn't dramatically necessary
It may just be that they are mostly grumpy snowflakes of course.
@BlancheLivermore why do you care so much about a tv series? I haven’t seen it and I don’t care.
Because Starmer has turned it into semi-official propaganda
And he keeps accidentally calling it fact rather than fiction
Is he doing it stupidly or deliberately?
Who cares? There are more important things going on
How dare you
Adolescence is the most important TV show ever
All the lefties, like the PM, told me that already

Sensible people who don't think that it's worthwhile educational material?
Nah. I haven’t seen it but it’s the same people who are irrationally angry about it are also the same people who think any criticism of white men is woke or racist or both. You need to get out more
"Starmer claims Adolescence is a documentary – again"
Is he stupid?
Does he believe it?
Is he a liar?
From your link, the Prime Minister said, "And it is young boys predominantly, and in this particular instance. But also how can we protect young girls at risk, because obviously that is a very strong feature of the documentary, the drama."
I've said often enough that I think Starmer will follow Wilson in retiring early and for similar reasons, but the Spectator is being a bit naughty here.
He's at least twice accidentally called it the documentary I mean drama?
Hmm..
If he's that Biden, he needs ousting
Along with Kemi who also believed Adolescence was based on a real case?
Surely a drama can be based on a real case? That doesn't make it a documentary
Stephen Graham has said it was based on two real life incidents I think
Anyway, Starmer has twice called it a documentary, but they were almost certainly just slips of the tongue, he knows it is a drama. Lets not make a documentary out of a crisis!
SKS has these slips of the tongue. He was referring to Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister for quite a while after the GE.
Speaking as one that hated it...I hated it because it was just a steaming pile of shit. Nothing to with any of the other things

This crisis is only just getting started.
I imagine it has probably already ground to more or less a halt as everyone assumes Trump having backed down on gazillion percent tariffs for the rest of the world will shortly also do so for China. So they will wait for him to do so before trade resumes.
The damage will be serious and lasting, but if he or somebody in his entourage finally does see this is getting him nowhere it should not be disastrous.
I'm sure last year many of the same people who are annoyed that the actor is white were annoyed that:

Commentating on this makes it seem like I am irate about it, when really I don't care all that much, but you could say that the grumpy snowflakes who complain about TV that shows Ann Boleyn being black and a teenager who stabs people being white were entitled to raise an eyebrow. Then again, art is allowed to do what it likes really...

Philippe Sands is awesome, proving lawyers are the best of humanity.

The writer said it was completely fictional. So not the case of a black murderer represented as white as per Badenoch's fake narrative.
On Reform can anyone explain why they seem to be unaffected by Trump's antics ?
Because the world is not PB
Also these things take time. The news cycle is often to quick to rush to judgement "first draft of history" and all that crap.
Here is a possibility: in general those favouring Reform are deeply sick of other parties, many have the same sympathy with Trumpism that some of his USA supporters do; and they think solving problems is simple and the lot in power just lack the will or the common sense. They have no reason to change their support at the moment.
Others however have no reason to join them, and their determination not to vote Reform is hardened by the lawless eccentricities of Trump. Most of this large group - who on the whole are decent and sane - have no reasons at at to be fond of Labour or Tory, but equally accept that there has to be a government by someone.
Current result, while a GE is miles away: Reform steady but not rising; Lab/Tory both way down on 'normal', LDs ticking up; DKs and Won't vote ticking up too.
Two further possibilities: Opinion hardens locally by area into two factions - mostly Reform v whoever can beat them.
Outside bet: LDs to spread support wider than their normal base, even ending up with seats that are LD v Reform. Which feels unthinkable.

(The answer is 169 if you don't know your times tables, btw.)
Glad to see that Tories are standing up for the Real Issues such as Adolescence.
Meanwhile, in the actual real world, you have to ask how the US-China war de-escalates.
China is now in a position to destroy America. Trade has effectively stopped - and American consumers want and need the stuff sat in those shipping containers that are on stop. China? Increase trade with notAmerica by only 6% and it need not ship anything to China.
Worse for America - China owns an awful lot of American debt. Even if it only stops buying it, that's really bad for America. The chaos in the bond market yesterday saw the handbrake pulled.

I have few issues with TV drama being used as a jumping off point for education. There was a huge fuss some years back about watching Blackadder Goes Forth in a lesson on the Great War. IIRC it was just that - a start point to develop further. Of course certain types of media liked to suggest that it was simply watching the programme…

I actually think Trump appeals not just to white men of low socio economic status but his aggression and machismo also appeals to latinos and black men. Hence that approval rating.

Imagine if China starts dumping its positions...
Forcing children to watch this won't improve the world
"Propaganda"

Saying that girls need to treat boys with respect
Saying that boys need to treat girls with respect
Saying that we have a real problem with violence against women and girls which starts in school
Propaganda.
