Question. If Trump continues to impose tariffs. If he continues to support Putin. If he continues to threaten our allies and NATO partners. Does he still get rewarded with his state visit. Or does he actually have to do something for us, to earn it.

Even for Hodges, this is obtuse. Fwiw, I thought it ill-advised to invite President Trump but state visits are not doled out to nice children. Hodges has confused the King with Father Christmas.
The way it's going the police might have something to say.

Short of a horse drawn carriage driving down the Mall with Axel Rudakubana it's difficult to imagine a less easily controlled event
I'll be out shaking my fist if it goes ahead. In fact I hope it does because I'll enjoy that.
I would hope that if it goes ahead there isn't serious disorder.
Controlling that, especially in those circumstances, would lower the reputation of the police even further.

Everyone turning their backs as Trump passes would be better.
Great idea. Shaking fists shows anger whereas that is more a sign of bottomless contempt, hence more powerful. It's the equivalent of when Trump comes on tv not shouting at the screen, or throwing things at it, but just casually turning it off or switching to a sports channel or a soap.
Waving Ukranian, Canadian and Greenland flags is the way to go.
I think that is a great idea, but did anyone here know (before looking it up) what a Greenland flag looked like. I didn't and it is rather interestingly odd.
    Very Polish Deathstar.
I know the Greenland flag well, but that’s because I’ve been to Greenland. Am I unique in PB in that?

The flag is one of the great flags of the world. Beautiful in its simplicity - yet it actually isn’t simple at all. It draws on multiple Inuit sun and moon myths
My wife and I have been to Greenland so not quite unique in that respect
So far then, we've got Big_G and spouse, Leon, and the JD Vances.

The quality of visitors to Greenland is somewhat variable.
I have been to both Greenland and Iceland and I would like to say both are hopelessly misnamed.

Greenland should be named Iceland and Iceland should be named Greenland.

Radical anti-avoidance measures hidden in the Spring Statement

It wasn’t mentioned in the Chancellor’s speech, but the Spring Statement papers contain a major suite of anti-tax avoidance proposals, probably the toughest ever introduced. If enacted this will, in effect, criminalise the tax avoidance industry.

    https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2025/03/26/radical-anti-avoidance-measures-hidden-in-the-spring-statement/

Dan Neidle has been reading the small print.

Sounds great, i question why its apparently so necessary to make it easy to avoid (if you are well off), but i assume millionaires will moan and move to Dubai, harming our tax rate rarher than helping it
It’s not. Governments come up with industry specific schemes like film finance that is then exploited by firms who essentially use a minimal amount of equity and buckets of debt and then claim the tax relief on the full amount.

It never works, but looks superficially like it does, and by the time the HMRC takes them through the legal process the promotors have run for the hills with their fees leaving the greedy saps on the hook for the liabilities
Part of the reason it doesn't work is that tax experts from the big 4 are seconded to help
with these tax schemes then sell consultancy on how to exploit them. The "patent box" was one example.
I’m sure that our resident big 4 tax partner would never sully his hands with that

I served two combat tours in Iraq. I know how these operations are supposed to go.

    Top takeaways:

    1) Hegseth definitively exposed CLASSIFIED war plans.

    2) Hegseth must resign. IMMEDIATELY.

    3) This is a cover-up at the highest levels of government.

    Let me explain...

I don't know what happened between your trip and my trip to Iceland, but green it isn't (mostly) and what is green is mainly moss, which I suppose does make it largely green (sigh).
This is the sort of greenery I saw in Iceland.

Yeah, its moss though. OK I'm wrong as you can guess I realised after my multiple edits trying to worm my way out of my first ridiculous statement.

Labour have a real voter coalition problem (the same as the Tories). It is probably - at least partially - fixable in the next few years, but it’s not a given.

Their left wing could desert them to LDs/Greens/Gaza Indys, some of the WWC vote to Reform, and then all they’ve really got left is their middle class vote - and if they don’t improve their economic lot, those votes might start to have their heads turned by the Tories.

They’re trying to build a Blairite coalition that doesn’t exist anymore.

    Note the fun bit -

Q - is the scheme legal?
A - our tame KC says it can work - here is his brief

The KC gets paid, the advice always turns out to be wrong. No comeback on the KC.
Best exchange between client and lawyer about a solution to a problem.

    Client: Is that solution legal?

    Lawyer: It is rarely prosecuted.
It is said (within private banking) that there are certain KCs who will sign any opinion for a suitable fee.

As in the banks tell the customers that
the opinions of certain lawyers are a very bad sign.
No wonder the King in Government makes so many bad decisions if that's the quality of his Counsellors!

He'll get it no matter what and will be slavered over while he is here. It's delusional to think otherwise.

Neither the British government or the (Not My) king has dared to say a word about his belligerence toward Canada and Denmark. Anybody anticipating even a pugil of moral courage from SKS or KC3 now is heading for disappointment.
This is a consequence of the US being the one "indispensable" country and Europe being dependent on US goodwill for security. Starmer and KCIII are being responsible in attempting to mitigate the impact of Trumpian madness.

The only thing that works with Trump is flattery - as Putin has so amply demonstrated.
Trump is a shit stain, and telling him so would be satisfying.

But, it could push him into siding further with Russia, so holding one's tongue is the sensible thing for SKS to do.
He’s also a sociopath, and the good thing with most sociopaths (as we’ve seen with Trump) is they struggle to bear grudges. They take offence, but it’s short lived and is water off a duck’s back, because they really don’t worry much about what others think about them.

Which means we can be selectively combative and accommodating. On tariff and trade policy we need to meet fire with fire, at least once it becomes clear there will be no UK exemptions (it seems clear already). On Ukraine and foreign policy the triangulation strategy probably works, for now. But with great care taken on intelligence sharing and a concerted effort to wean ourselves off dependency.
I think that Trump does bear grudges.
Indeed his life seems dominated by them and a drive for revenge.
JD Vance compared Trump to Hitler. That's one forgiven right there.
I suspect Trump thought it a compliment. Seriously!

Politically, for re-election, it's the NHS and cost of living that matter most.

Poverty would largely affect the activist base.

COL and “poverty” are linked though.

Benefits cuts are always popular on paper but similar to tax rises (on anyone other than yourself). There will be a lot of people in the country related to or knowing someone who will be impacted by benefits changes and that has the possibility of turning entire families away from Labour, who would be traditional supporters. This was also one of the issues, I suspect, with the WFA cut and why it resonated so deeply.

I don’t have the answers for Labour, I just comment that one of the reasons why they are so low in the polls has to be that a lot of their policies of late have really miffed a number of people who think “Labour are supposed to be on my side” .

I don't know what happened between your trip and my trip to Iceland, but green it isn't (mostly) and what is green is mainly moss, which I suppose does make it largely green (sigh).
This is the sort of greenery I saw in Iceland.

    https://icelandtrippers.com/summer-in-iceland/
Yeah, its moss though. OK I'm wrong as you can guess I realised after my multiple edits trying to worm my way out of my first ridiculous statement.

Greenland though - That is not white.
Here’s my Iceland photo, from 2023

All looks quite icy. But we were in the “ice cave of Vatnajokull” (a brilliantly scary place if you haven’t been)
Whilst I enjoyed my trip to Iceland it failed on most of its selling points:

    a) I didn't see the Northern lights even though we did 2 night time trips
    b) I did see dolphins and Minke whales, but have since seen a better display on a ferry from France to the UK
    c) It wasn't cold at all. It was significantly warmer than it should have been for the time of year

Geyser was good though as was the Cod War boat and as was the Blue Lagoon which I believe is now closed for the ridiculous reason of an erupting volcano next door.

PS And the waterfalls and standing on 2 continents simultaneously wasn't bad.

At what point does Denmark start shipping guns to Greenlandic citizens? This is literally a signpost to an invasion.
If Trump is serious then Greenland is finished. No way Denmark can defend it against the USA, nor can 50,000 Greenlanders fight off the USMC

It could all be done and dusted in a day
Don't fret. it isn't going to happen.
You think? What odds would you be offering?
No odds. It is just called wisdom. Trump thinks he is a clever negotiator and part of his style of negotiation is playing the hard man. He is modelling himself on Putin and perhaps he thinks his legacy will be to make the USA bigger in his dementia riddled mind, and that could be a threat. I think though there is more likely to be a US coup than the US invading a territory owned by another NATO member. Even under this fecking lunatic.

Greenlanders have made it clear that they don't want to be part of the US. We'd have to back Denmark, a NATO ally and all-round good chaps (cyclists + monarchy + democracy). At the very least so the Argentinians don't get funny ideas.

The key is to make sure that kind of stupidity never happens. If that means relocating Attenborough, Judi Dench, Princess Anne and 100 very cute cockapoos to Nuuk then so be it.

Question. If Trump continues to impose tariffs. If he continues to support Putin. If he continues to threaten our allies and NATO partners. Does he still get rewarded with his state visit. Or does he actually have to do something for us, to earn it.

NHS must stop ‘plundering’ foreign countries for doctors, says Streeting
Health Secretary says it is ‘morally unacceptable’ that Britain has not trained more doctors

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/03/26/nhs-plundering-foreign-doctors-wes-streeting/ (£££)

Streeting is right on both counts.

Though when I asked our Medical School about increased numbers of students as part of the NHS plan, they said there was no expansion.

Tumbleweed from the DoH. It's cheaper and easier to import Nigerians and Egyptians.
Unless things have changed a lot since my own working days, the lack of interest in training our own people is a national trait in all walks of life.

    Good morning, everybody.
One of the main reasons for our difficulties in competing economically with other countries is the relatively high cost of overheads here. This is due largely to poor infrastructure and a lack of training.

It is difficult, though not impossible to do something about the former. The latter appears to be a cultural thing. 'We fly by the seat of our pants'. Hmm,yes...and not very well in the main.
Businesses which invest in training often find their newly trained workers depart for other businesses which do not invest in training but offer higher pay.

Amusingly those departed workers sometimes regret their decision as they discover that businesses which do not invest in training but offer higher pay are also unpleasant places to work at.
The flip side of that is that businesses are quicker to sack people in the interests of maximising shareholder value and supposed efficiency. Businesses show less loyalty to staff; staff show less loyalty to businesses. Reduced social trust all round.
In the building industry there is already a training levy.

I advocate merging all training and higher education into universities.

This would get rid of the academic/blue collar divide - degrees for all. Modular, part time in the mix as well.

I would go further, and demand a mix in all degrees - Elizabethan Poetry with a side of Welding.

A plumbing degree with a side of Moral Philosophy.
There's been an Apprenticeship Levy since 2017, and it raises £3.5 billion per annum:

The Apprenticeship Levy, a 0.5% levy on annual paybills exceeding £3 million, currently raises around £3.5 billion annually, with a portion allocated to the Department for Education (DfE) for apprenticeships in England and the remainder distributed to devolved governments.

    https://feweek.co.uk/apprenticeship-levy-cash-cow/
The organisation of and rules around apprenticeships allowed in this scheme is a nightmare. I am constantly surprised how little attention it receives. Cut all the red tape and it would be a good scheme.

Any occupying force would be a the end of quite a long and vulnerable supply line. Everything would have to be flown or sailed in, over Canada or the sea. Supply ships and fat aircraft are very hittable targets for a missile.

So, for that matter, are Air Force One and Mar-a-Lago.

Yes the only voters who like Starmer and Reeves now are bankers and developers.

The left hate them, the white working class hate them, farmers hate them, pensioners hate them and business owners hate them and now the public sector, civil servants and ex NHS England workers and the disabled and those on benefits hate them too
    That's a real hatefest.
I guess it also means that the roughly 25% who indicate they'd still vote Labour are all bankers and developers. Huge if true.
25% would be the lowest Labour GE voteshare for 100 years and that was pre spending review

Don't fret. it isn't going to happen.
This is Trump. He very often does exactly what he says - eg tariffs

I thought he’d try and bribe the Greenlanders to accede. Give each one $50k. The USA can afford it

But maybe he’ll just fly in the Marines (if they are willing to obey)
He could, but the USA would just be a bullying occupying force. He knows that no-one (except Russia) would recognise territorial ownership so it would be like squatters in Trump Tower. It would be meaningless. He will hope he can buy it.
Any occupying force would be a the end of quite a long and vulnerable supply line. Everything would have to be flown or sailed in, over Canada or the sea. Supply ships and fat aircraft are very hittable targets for a missile.

So, for that matter, are Air Force One and Mar-a-Lago.
Who do you think is going to be firing missiles at them?

Indeed, there's no way for Denmark to stop the US taking Greenland by force. But it would very likely turn into an unmitigated disaster for Trump.

NATO would die that day, taking all of the US' bases in Europe with it. What happens if the Greenlanders resist and the Marines are ordered to shoot civilians and some (possibly all) refuse? And would the US be prepared to start a shooting war if Europe mustered a fleet to take the island back?

Speaking to Metro, Lip reading expert Jacqui Press reveals Trump reportedly said to Starmer: ‘How are you? Nice to see you here, good journey? ‘You look good… handsome.’

And as for Starmer's wife Vic, well ,,,
The US president said he was “very impressed” with Sir Keir Starmer's "beautiful wife".

This is Starmer's edge with Trump. Jesus.

Perhaps, having turned their backs, everyone should do a moonie? The police can't arrest everyone!

Yes even for a lunatic like Trump a military assault looks absurdly risky - there would be a real chance his orders are disobeyed and then he’d be toppled and likely end in jail

Unfair on Reeves because she's doing the right thing and no-one likes it.
If I may politely disagree. The function of the Labour Party is to increase the wealth and opportunities of the working class and the poor. To do this it increases equality by taxing the rich and spreading that wealth to the poor. But the belief has spread that one cannot tax the rich (because they leave) so the only tool Labour have left is to impoverish and immiserate the poor and/or working class, therefore obviating the entire point of the Labour movement.

If things keep going this way the South Wales Valleys will go Reform in 2029, which is Olympus has fallen for Labour. Starmer flirts unthinking with the destruction of his party, which as a metropolitan elite lawyer he failks to understand or even intuit.

Seriously!
I expect Vance considers it a compliment.

    Employment in April 2010: 29.5mn

Employment rate in April 1997: 58.1%
Employment rate in April 2010: 58.2%
UK population rise between 1997 and 2010: 4.45m
That's why I also included the employment rate.

“By the end of November, mark my words, all wooden spoons over nine inches long will be forever banished. Along with wasps. I’m sending in Jonathan Powell to negotiate with the King of the Wasps and they’ve agreed to move to Ireland as long as we give them seventy trillion pounds in apricot jam”

Right now the Guardian website has four stories at the top, all different versions of “Rachel Reeves is a cruel, lying, incompetent clown”

Unbelievable hostility to a Labour Chancellor. I wonder if Labour’s polling might dip below 20

Indeed if progressive inner city and university town seats went Green and the LDs held their anti Brexit seats and the white working class seats went Reform and soft Leave seats went back to Tory and Muslim seats Corbynite Independent that would be curtains for Labour
I am certain that even though they will lose large numbers of seats at the next GE there will still be more Labour MPs than Tory ones.

THANK GOD SIR KEIR STARMER HAS BANNED NINJA SWORDS

You could sense the tension in the streets. Waiting for him to do this. To finally bring peace to urban Britain. It was the question everyone asked in every pub, shop and casualty ward - “when will they finally have the sense to ban ninja swords, so all this violence will stop”

Now, he’s done it. Taken action. Expect Labour to poll 50%+ by May

They're being freely sold on Amazon right now. It's a disgrace.

Starmer is why Americans are right to despise Britain
Americans with a grievance of course can just pop down the gun store in some states
buy an AK 47 and shoot all those who pissed them off. No need to bother with a sword

You do have to think that a Labour Government taking a quarter of a million more into poverty has a fundamental problem.

But then, all Labour Governments leave office with fewer employed than they inherited.

At some point, voters WILL realise their business model is shite.

That doesn't affect the rate though does it.

Because of the changing age pyramid in the country that expansion of the population is almost entirely of the retired. The working age population is pretty much unchanged. Without immigration taxes would be higher or pensions would be less, or both. This is the debate on immigration that we never have. Do we want to be pure but poor?
We need to increase our birthrate, on that Musk is right

    Starmer, Lammy and Reeves

What did we do to deserve this? Yes, I voted for them, but no one could have expected them to be this bad, this stupid, this inept, this flailing, this futile, this clueless, this embarrassing, this absolutely fucking terrible in every single aspect

I think it's karmic justice for the Irish Famine

I had to look that up! ("Waitrose Infowars" = "Byline Times"). I don't know of a better one on Thiel/Palantir: care to suggest one/two?
