I'll pass over the trend for trailers to do trailer music covers, but two I did like were Ki Theory's "Enjoy The Silence" for "Ghost In the Machine" and Sebastian Böhm's "Blue Monday" for "Wonder Woman 1984"

"Without You" is a very good call on the best cover ever, Harry Nilsson turned a slightly drab song into something oooh

I'd also nominate Prince's original Nothing Compares to U, which is, TBH, a bit weird and crap, albeit with the bone structure of a good song

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpGA0azFdCs

And then, amazingly, as we all know:

    https://youtu.be/0-EF60neguk?si=hLn9gZR-pbWsulbK

One of the GREATEST songs ever

Roberta Flack (topical- rip) - "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"

Willy Nelson - "Always On My Mind"

Neil Young - "Four strong winds"

EBTB - "I Don't Want to Talk About It" *

    * Top Trump points to any PB who knows without google who wrote and sang the original.
The original is actually better imho.
Either of PP Arnold’s two most famous hits easily qualifies.

EDIT: Still recording and performing- what a trooper!

That said, there's one type of court order being ignored that I find interesting, and that's the payment stuff. Elons all defensive about it, lots of payments appear to be.. well, broken.

In other words: I am starting to wonder if the government -can't- pay USAID/NIH contractors, etc.

    @theophite.bsky.social‬

yeah. it seems plausible that DOGE has just straight-up broken government payment systems and can't fix them.

A $53bn (£41.4 billion) reconstruction plan to rival President Donald Trump's idea for the US to "take over Gaza" and move out more than two million Palestinians has been approved by Arab leaders at an emergency summit in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

"The Egypt plan is now an Arab plan," announced the secretary general of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the end of this hours-long gathering.

Without referring specifically to President Trump's ideas, he underlined that "the Arab stance is to reject any displacement, whether it is voluntary or forced".

Egypt had produced a detailed blueprint, with a 91-page glossy document including images of leafy neighbourhoods and grand public buildings, to counter a US scheme labelled as a "Middle East Riviera" which shocked the Arab world and beyond.

“Where do you go to?” is one of the most haunting songs. Most people thing it’s a charming love song, but Marie-Claire is seriously troubled. To quote from the second act:

You keep your secrets inside Marie-Claire

Trump loves tariffs because he personally has the power to impose them at will. And once imposed he personally has the power to take them away again. I think that explains quite a lot. Whether he really has a coherent theory of what they are supposed to be good for is less sure.

(Theoretically Congress has power over tariffs but they seem to have surrendered it to the presidency).

The Trump tariff rationale is that it encourages businesses to manufacture in the US.
On/off tariffs have zero chance of doing that - businesses need certainty to make such decisions.

It's just a crappy and inefficient sales tax.

    "Not at present," Bessent told
    @CBSNews
when asked whether the economic deal was still on the table.

Not a surprise . Trump now wants to extort even more money from Ukraine as punishment for Zelenskyy not licking his boots last week .

For all their bleating about sovereignty, the far right really doesn't give a shit about it do they?

The British political class are totally clueless. Russia has achieved its war aims and Ukraine gets to remain a soveriegn country backed by the guarantee of American interests. It's really not very difficult to work out.

I'm guessing Sargon loves Vlad because he thinks he'd let a UK puppet government bulldoze mosques and send muslims to concentration camps.

It's about domination of women by men. Always was, just became more obvious this time.

Whereas in reality Putin calls himself the "saviour of Islam" and attacks the West for allowing people to disrespect the Koran and Mohammed.

Actually the greatest cover is Miley Cyrus covering Heart of Glass.

Oh Eagles - that was truly awful!

    She can’t sing.

This is better, and it’s not even the greatest cover of all time, it’s just a tribute

A lot of bad news around at the moment, so if anyone needs cheering up, try this. Unbeknownst to most, country legend Glen Campbell made an absolutely superb cover version of Green Day's "Time of Your Life"

To my mind maybe one of the best cover versions of any song ever, he took it and made it perfect

    https://youtu.be/jkORS34Lep0?si=EHAaiL3g-RN90PdI

And if that's not enough, while searching for this video, I found another cover version of the same song, which - tho not quite as good - does feature a ravishingly pretty girl with a gorgeous voice.

    Courage. We shall endure

I have to admit it's a good cover, and I like a bit of Green Day.

One of my favourite covers of all time is the folky version of Love Will Tear Us Apart by June Tabor and Oysterband

    What do you think?
In a similar vein, I like Norma Waterson’s cover of Billy Bragg’s St Swithin’s Day:

I'm guessing everybody here is watching Mr Chump's speech.

It's remarkable watching a legislature celebrate a President shooting their own country in the feet, then the balls, then the head.

It's a good compare and contrast to the Commons / Lords, which is the template from 1776 (I assume), there's a Speaker, and a Sergeant-at-Arms.

But if it is all supposed to be going back to then, where's the Opera Hat?

I think the point is to create a bigger mess, and leave Europe holding the bag.

The idea that the US might be tied in by a minerals agreement isn’t very convincing - that was also a Trump line about Afghanistan, back in 2017.
Just before he pulled the rug from under the government, and negotiated a handover to the Taliban.

(Trump Finds Reason for the U.S. to Remain in Afghanistan: Minerals
    July 25, 2017
    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/25/world/asia/afghanistan-trump-mineral-deposits.html )

Getting Biden to handle the endgame was unintentional, obviously, but it meant he avoided most of the blame.

Allowing Trump to negotiate settlement terms, when were the ones who will have to deal with the consequences, is pretty insane too.

K-46 is considerably cheaper and probably worth it if they get F-15EX as part of the deal - not many nuts you can't crack with that beast.

However, the political tides are definitely against a Boeing deal.

What's the commonality between the KC-46 and the 767? I'd expect it to be quite high, and therefore harder for the yanks to play silly beggars with?

It's the 200ER fuselage with the freighter wings/undercarriage and a 787 cockpit - hence Frankentanker.

The whole is very much greater than the sum of its parts. I can see the appeal for the Poles as they want as many hoses as possible rather than as much offload as possible so more, smaller tankers (K-46) might make more sense than larger/fewer (A330MRTT).

They can plan to minimise trade with an erratic United States. Obviously there's a limit for many as to how much that occurs, but those with a choice might prefer stable and sane regimes.

The US is 12% of global gdp..... the rest of the world diversifies.... there are plenty of other channels for trade that don't permanently place your neck on the maga chopping block. This is a decisive turning point in my mind.... in 10 years, when the global response to this is obvious, we will be living in a very different world. The US is creating a lot of drama and spectacle right now... but they will be radically diminished. All of the current US allies will just quietly and gradually be voting with their feet. No grand statements, no drama, just bit by bit making alternative arrangements for security, supply chains, partners and currencies. It won't be spectacular, but it will be inexorable.
His economic policies, particularly in relation to tariffs and government spending, are so irrational that it is surprising that someone is not having a word.

I think that the Tech Bros, who he might listen to, have got so used to operating in an oligarchy system that they don't really think of an economy where competition is relevant and any additional costs are simply passed on to a passive consumer with no real choice. I think he genuinely believes that this is the model for the USA. He is going to find out fairly rapidly that it isn't.

The idea is probably to crash the economy and stock market allowing the tech bros to come in .... buy up the assets and run the joint as a monopoly. The collective cake gets much much smaller and far less efficient, but the tech pros walk away with the biggest slice. When the US has been carved up they pick up and move on to the next opportunity somewhere else. It is the great extraction.
