OK, PB Brains trust. Today £1 GBP = $1.28 USD approx. Where will it be on Dec 31st?

    • Under $1.20
    • $1.20 to 1.2499
    • $1.25 to 1.2999
    • $1.30 to 1.3499
    • $1.25 or more
If those are the spread options, I'm going to go with $1.25 or more.

There is a lot of sane washing going on. Desperate attempts to find a rationale that delivers hope.

It isn’t there. They’re only just getting started. It’s going to get worse before it gets better and we have to hunker down.

It's not even certain Putin will do a ceasefire, and if so, for how long it might last.
One thing that is certain, there's no good faith to be expected from either Russia or the US.

At least most of Europe realises it now has to rearm.

An interesting theory, albeit a little conspiratorial, about why Trump is acting as he is with regards to the financial markets.

Basically it’s a genius move to drive down the cost of the 10 year so to make refinancing of debt considerably less costly.

    https://x.com/amitisinvesting/status/1896972241415344477?s=61

    I have an alternative theory.

That he's a fucking imbecile who doesn't understand finance, economics, taxation or trade.
    Here's another theory.

What he, Musk and so on really care about is the huge tax cut that is going through Congress, and that is what really matters to them.

It's very unpopular, but they got it through the election by promising to reduce taxes on tips and other irritants for working class Americans at the same time. Now, mysteriously, all that has disappeared from the bill, and you're just left with huge and unpopular tax cuts for the very rich.

And now all the crap about invading Canada and Greenland, starting trade wars and so on is just to distract from the big tax cut they're proposing.

    So called "flooding the zone".

It's not an original thought (e.g. see here https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/flood-the-zone-donald-trump/) but it makes a lot of the otherwise inexplicable make sense. Maybe Trump is stupid and dangerous enough to buy the crap he spouts, but not everybody who supports him is.
    No

Trump wanted to do lots of mad stuff in his first term. But was stopped by various barriers.

So, his acolytes assembled a plan for getting mad stuff to actually happen. To break the barriers.

The actual policies are a chaotic assemblage of Trump’s personal agenda, Project 2025 and a bunch of others.

Trump wants his personal lunacies and in return backs those who can help achieve them, in their goals.

"Without You" is a very good call on the best cover ever, Harry Nilsson turned a slightly drab song into something oooh

I'd also nominate Prince's original Nothing Compares to U, which is, TBH, a bit weird and crap, albeit with the bone structure of a good song

If anyone has a passing interest in WWE (I know, my wife also thinks I'm insane) Jon Stewart has a bit on it after some shocking revelations on Saturday that are perfectly lined up with geopolitical events. It's actually brilliant and I'm also pretty jazzed that Jon is also a wrestling fan, there's no way he could have explained it so well without actually knowing what's going on.

Would we take a side in the second US civil war though?

Trump moves north into Canada, pushing up inland through the Midwest and Great Plains. Windsor falls first, then London, and Further west first Winnipeg then Saskatoon and finally the Alberta oilfields fall. A large force besieges Toronto.

Meanwhile street battles break out in DC and New York. Anti Trump forces have already mutinied en masse and refuse to fight. Washington, Oregon and California secede. So do Massachusetts, Vermont and a series of New England states.

Rebel brigades move quickly North from Seattle and Boston and rebel navy forces push up the St Lawrence seaway and the West coast to bolster Canadian allies in Vancouver and Montreal, and then attempt to encircle US loyalist troops in a race to Hudson’s bay.

Loyalists backed by Russian infantry move South through Alaska to take the gold fields of the far North. Texan and Californian battalions clash near the Mexican border in New Mexico. Naval and airforces suffer huge casualties on both sides in battles along a front from New Jersey to Ohio.

Does a US civil war turn nuclear? Who has the decisive advantage? Does Britain sit it out, or does the involvement of Canada draw us, and possibly France in? What about Mexico?

Curious to see Spain and Italy higher in pro-Americanism than the U.K. voters.

Italy traditionally had a lot of cold war anti-Americanism, but it seems Meloni Trumps that, so to speak.

'All know that a strong America is the best ally of peace—the world’s avaricious dictators of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are hesitant to invade and brutalize in the face of 1) American strength and 2) American resolve. Our tepid response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia and Crimea surely contributed to Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

American strength is greatest when we have friends that stand with us; we must not let economic squabbles fray the bonds of our alliances.
American resolve is greatest when we stand with the victims of oppression and invasion. After Russia invaded Ukraine with hundreds of tanks and hundreds of thousands of troops, America - together with Europe - rallied to give Ukraine the weapons and aid to defend itself. Three years later, Russia continues its brutal assault. We must not let personal squabbles weaken our resolve to stand with the freedom fighters and to oppose the authoritarian aggressors.
Lasting peace will only be achieved if America demonstrates strength and resolve and if Ukraine is certain that it will not be invaded again. Anything short of that would elicit only temporary celebration; it would open the door to global conflicts that we may be unable to contain.'

    Yes, genius.

Joe Cocker amazing cover of A Little Help from My Friends.

For once I agree with you Lucky. You win the gold medal.

The Sheffield Grinder's ALHFMF is sublime. It shouldn't work. A crap Ringo Starr song which was mangled by the Beatles, sung by a gravel voiced angry Yorkshireman. That is not a recipe for one of the greatest covers of the rock era, but the sum is substantially greater than its constituent parts. The production is incredible.

That Cocker version is definitely one of the rare occasions where the cover is better than the original. Which is amazing considering the original was The Beatles.

Just to go on a slight tangent from cover versions, can I go on a small rant about that abortion of a song 'You Raise Me Up', which is a ghastly anodyne version of the glorious 'Danny Boy' that seems to have got everywhere like some awful disease. I can't describe the utter pap that this song is. It doesn't even have the high note at the end.
