Never mind a month, if they raised the £100m (which I agree, seems on the low side - maybe they're using the same advisor as with the gold reserves sale), it'd cover Treasury debt interest for about 15 hours going by the last Budget.Omnium said:This story caught my eye

I'm not against selling off state assets, but these seem to be at rather knock-down prices.
Far more troubling is that Labour plan to 'reduce the deficit' by doing so, rather than reducing national debt. Now this may seem like semantics, but it seems to me to be precisely the sort of statement that means we should be very scared of Labour's economic plans. Sane people do not sell their cars to cover their credit card interest for the month.0 -
There's a lovely line in Dominic Lawson's column in today's STimes [I'm not allowed to even link to it here]
He quotes another along the lines of "Labour expounds really well how to do good society - what it fails to do is expound a good life".
I thought that rocked. The real quote is loads better - well worth spending £4 and reading it for yourself.Indigo said:

Well I don't think anybody with any sense took it literally in the first place but it does make him a sitting target if and when he confronts Farage in a TV debate.bigjohnowls said:“The Prime Minister promised ‘no ifs no buts’ to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands, in 2010.
Theresa May has spent four years claiming she was on track.
David Cameron said in May 2014 the target for net migration - the difference between the number of people coming into the UK and those leaving - was "perfectly achievable".
Theresa May has said today. The UK is "unlikely" to meet its target for reducing immigration.
Oh well another broken promise for the list at GE2015
It's such an open goal for UKIP that you have to wonder whether DC will actually agree to a public debate. The other Parties will not of course be able to outbid the Tories on this issue and the likelihood of any of them being able to actually implement whatever manifesto promises they make on immigration is remote. But Dave's the one who is going to be skewered on this issue, and the fact that Ed and Nick will also be writhing uncomfortably is not going to comfort him much.
It makes me think he may seek a way out of the debates.
Btw, nice to meet you at DDs. Hope you enjoyed it. As a regular attendee, I can vouch that it was a particularly good turnout, both in terms of numbers and quality.0 -

Labour continues to eat itself. Another days headlines beckons...
Ed Miliband was right to sack Emily Thornberry from the shadow cabinet because she was “condescending and disrespectful” towards working people and damaged Labour’s election prospects when she tweeted a picture of a house decked out in St George’s flags, Rachel Reeves, the shadow work and pensions secretary, has said.
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/nov/23/emily-thornberry-damaged-labour-election-prospects-rochester-tweet
In some of the strongest criticism of the former frontbencher, Reeves said that Thornberry’s tweet was contrary to the values of the Labour party.0 -

Emily is more authentic than Ed...
That’s the thing about Emily, she seems like a real person. What I mean by that is, who she is as an MP is who she is in ‘real life’. I believe her when she says things. She connects with people. As an uber liberal barrister, her views are representative of parts of North London and those people deserve a voice within Labour. It shouldn’t be the only voice, which has been part of the problem of the last few years, nor the dominant voice, but it should surely be permitted to speak. And Emily does speak, and when she does, I often don’t agree with her but I feel she is sincere. I like that. We like that. And this is probably at least part of the reason why she was able to win her Islington seat when the Lib Dems were the toast of London in 2005, and why she increased her majority in 2010 when her seat was the Lib Dems top priority target seat. We cry out for authenticity in our politicians, yet when she did something that the more careful, studied politicians wouldn’t do in a million years she is publicly pilloried.

The idiosyncrasies of my SmartTV as it battles for supremacy with my Humax box vs streaming DivX/WMP from my laptop is most amusing.
I really wish I had a Pot Luck button on my remote - it'd make more sense to randomly pick something than me wandering about lost between 2200 music files and about another 1000 video files which appear to be randomly living somewhere on my home network - and that's before my PC/phone jumps in to tell me on Twitter that a conversation I've not participated in or even looked at has been retweeted 4x.
Honestly, I can keep a few balls in the air - but this is insanely complex. Maybe I should buy a goldfish and stick to that?!Moses_ said:Swiss bob

SCOTLAND SEATS SURBITONISED
I am taking the last 7 Yougov Scottish sub samples and aggregating them [ I know the pitfalls ! ]
Based on that, which now is: C 15.00, Lab 24.29, LD 6.29, SNP 43.71,
I apply the swings to the GE2010 results using UNS.
It is terrible for Labour. No wonder Ed got so angry with Emily. Labour will now need to become the "Aenglish" party.
So, SSS tonight is:
C 1 [1], Lab 9 [41], LD 2 [ 11 ], SNP 47 [ 6 ]
The two LD seats are Orkney and Ross, Skye. On current numbers, LD will lose Inverness 42% to 28%. Please note I am using UNS.

You shouldn't have ANY codec packs installed on Win7/8 all you need is mpc-hc and if it gets stroppy with any MKV file, possibly Haalli (Matroska) Spiltter.
These days with a decent graphics card, mpc-hc will play pretty much any common format from built in filters using hardware decoding on the graphics card. VLC will of course play absolutely everything using software and so should be your backup player.
I use anysoft anyDVDHD to remove the region coding on my drive, and it can rip to disk for you. Then you pass the files through makemkv.
If you can find a copy dvddecryptor for may work on your already ripped files.

If you can find a copy dvddecryptor for may work on your already ripped files.0 -

Didn't that use to be the other way round?
It's plausible that the online pollsters have applied some of their weightings too strongly in an attempt to correct for the "panel effect", so are now overdoing it.
Interesting that it's the two online pollsters who produce polls most often who are at the far extreme of the distribution. If you were to produce a similar plot with one bar for every individual poll for November so far then you would have a very different distribution skewed towards the polls that are conducted most often.0 -
i was told it was illegal to fly a Jolly Roger in my garden from my flagpole - how I could commit an act of piracy 5 miles inland remains a mystery. The last time I needed a jetty was about 200yr ago.
This just sums up the idiocy of where we now are - Kippers who get annoyed about this have my full and husband frightening backingBut whatever may be the done thing in Dartmouth Park, it is hard to see many other councils regarding a tacky, scruffy and assertive draping of flags over most of the front of the house as being in keeping with the neighbourhood. This is surely particularly so when, as seems to have been the case here, some local residents – apparently some of “the ethnic minorities” – have expressed reservations about them.
So even the England flags may be illegal.
But that is not the end of the matter, because Mr Ware is not only displaying two flags of St George, he is also displaying a West Ham Football Club flag.
Potentially this could land him in even hotter water for a number of reasons. The obvious point is that a West Ham FC flag is certainly not in keeping with local “cultural features,” (the local football team being not West Ham but the less glamorous Gillingham Town FC).
And although sporting flags can be allowed without planning permission, the rules about flying them are much stricter than the rules about the display of national flags.
Somewhat bizarrely, while the law surrounding the hanging of an England flag is a little ambiguous, there is no such fuzziness over the West Ham flag. It is illegal to hang it outside your house unless either it has been expressly authorised by the Council, or if it is flown from a flagpole.
The law could not be clearer, although it does take a little ferretting out. Under Schedule 3 of the 2007 regulations, as amended in 2012, a flag “bearing the device of any sports club” is deemed to have planning permission if, but only if, it is:
“attached to a single flagstaff ….”
There are some detailed rules about where the flagstaff can be put but these need not trouble us now. In the absence of a flagstaff, Mr Ware’s West Ham flag requires express planning permission. If he did not obtain it (and an online search of planning applications for flags in Medway does not reveal any such application) he is guilty of a criminal offence.Scott_P said:Emily was right. Mr Smithson, TSE,
How about the next PB meet up in a boxing club? You could charge entry and run the book.
I volunteer to take both gobshites on, one at a time or both at once.
That's you malcomlg and you 'big' JO.
Seriously i only ever use derogatory words in posts that have been used against me as per my last post.
If I have overstepped that i apologise.
Anyway just had Toby Perkins at the door.
I nominate him to take my place in the ring in your proposed rumble he is a brick outhouse -for the avoidance of doubt this is a joke.
I don't do violence.

Well, the previous post is a coincidence. I have just been banned from UK Polling.
However, that was for saying Ed Miliband is not fit to run the fish counter in the Co-oP.
My comment is, Ed Miliband is not fit to run the fish counter in the Co-oP.0 -
I replied to you several times asking you to point out my comments that would justify what you said which ascribed to me opinions I have never expressed.bigjohnowls said:

I'm not going to bother repeating it again but if that's some kind of apology it is accepted.
Let's move on.

Any comments on the tax status of Lewis Hamilton or Myleene Klass now needs to come with a link from reputable news site.
Anyone unable to comply with the above, may find themselves facing a long enforced break from the site.
"How about the next PB meet up in a boxing club? You could charge entry and run the book.

In fairness, offering a sporting contest in a boxing ring is hardly a threat of violence. I will not do it again.

Wasn't that Marven [sp] Medium? Water soluble and very sticky but when dry you could spend ages peeling it off your palms?
I liked Copydex - hours of fun with that. It's very useful to blank out watercolours or places you want to keep out of an inked space when drawing or decorating.Moses_ said:Plato said:Sometimes I genuinely worry if you spent too much time with Evostik as a youngster.

As usual PT is wrong.
Back in the 60's in school for junior projects there was a white paste like glue in a light blue container with a white top. The spreader was attached to the the lid inside. It smelt of almonds and we all loved the smell I mean we just all did......
Can't remember the name but whenever juniors took the lid off we all "sniffed it"
We're we the first glue sniffers?? Shock !!0 -

Belated congratulations to the tax dodger !!CarlottaVance said:BBC News leading with Hamilton news......curiously enough no mention of his tax residence status.....pointing out that he's the first Brit in 40 years - since Sir Jackie Stewart - to win two world titles.
They keep saying he's a "Briton" - malcolm claims he's Monaguesque.....
I think Boris now wishes he also was a Monagasque !
It's easy enough for Hamilton to claim that a Monaco base is most conventient for travel when he races all over the World.
It is hard to prove anyone's motivation for doing something. Proving Hamilton lives in Monaco for tax purpsoes rather than for ease of travel and the climate is hard to do - as it would be to show about anyone.
