Survation are generally the pollsters that find the highest levels of support for UKIP. In Newark on the night the result marginally overstated UKIP, substantially overstated Labour and significantly understated the Conservatives.
Lord Ashcroft's poll was much closer to the final result (though it still understated the Conservatives and overstated Labour and UKIP):
http://lordashcroftpolls.com/2014/06/tories-set-hold-newark/
This looks likely to be very close to me.0 -
Even if the Lib Dems get 30 seats, what influence do they expect to have? As kingmaker possibly, but only if Labour and Tory are very close in seats. Good luck to them in a coalition with the Tories (terrified of Ukip) where they are outnumbered 10:1, with Cameron under serious pressure from his backbenchers who are now fired up thanks to his conference speech. What if it's Labour? A coalition between those two looks much simpler on paper, but there's a danger for Clegg that as Deputy PM he'll just drift into the wilderness. Perhaps he'd choose a major department to run this time, but I suspect he'd be a fairly marginal figure in the government.0

Lib Dems attacking the Conservatives hasn't worked. It didn't work last year, or the year before. Not hard to see why:

And then some bleat about Lib Dems not getting the credit. If you continually complain about how hateful your boss/the Conservatives are then it is not credit but blame which is to be allocated. If the Lib Dems had been more positive generally they'd have an easier time linking the £10k personal allowance (delivered by a Conservative Chancellor...) to their party.0 -

I love the notion that Farage is to The UK as Obama was to black Americans. Oh and btw how ant-establishment is Obama. Like it or not politicians are a mere reflection of the society in which they live. Overall I like British society and most of the politicians who seek to serve it.Ninoinoz said:

Are Catholics allowed to gamble? Genuine question.
Gambling for Catholics is now governed by the Catechism which states:-
"2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. the passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant."0 -

Labour, Conservative and Lib Dems are all talking at their conferences about extra spending when the government is already overspending by £100billion a year.
This is not unusual for politicians except that this time whichever government is in power may find they can't borrow any more and have to resort to a crash programme to preserve cash.0 -

She was an extremely impressive winner last year and has been "wrong" in her subsequent three races. So there are huge question marks over her and there's no point backing her each way. A repeat win in this race has always been the plan and her trainer feels she is on the way back. She would prefer softer ground but she has won on good ground. She has a nice draw from trap 3.
She will probably run a stinker but if she is back to close to her best she could win comfortably. At 14/1 she looks worth a punt to me.

I thought we were going to do the double last year!! They had a parade for the little cup and everything - it was like 83 all over again.malcolmg said:
so not quite top then , Hamilton are top now. Aberdeen looking a lot better this year though.JBriskin said:
Wrong! It's Aberdeen don't think we're that far behind. I only watch when they're on normal Tv cup games and when the scores come in so don't expect me to be able to footie talk with you.malcolmg said:

Thanks HYUFD, I likedHYUFD said:Matthew D'Ancona There is still the chemistry to forge a second Con-LD Coalition
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/david-cameron/11140111/There-is-still-the-chemistry-to-forge-a-second-Con-Lib-Coalition.html
"Cameron’s £12,500 pledge was a pitiless annexation of Lib Dem terrain. Or it was the first line of a second Lib-Con deal: take your pick. Last time, even as he scorned coalition politics and warned, in a party political broadcast, of the perils of a hung Parliament, the Tory leader was instructing his team to prepare for precisely that. Don’t be fooled by the seething rhetoric: things are rarely what they seem."
from the article.
Does anybody think that Labour are preparing for coalition this time (and if with whom)?0 -
Unlikely to get a better chance than this year given Celtic are poor.JBriskin said:

So a little bit of cheating is OK?RodCrosby said:
Yes, even on the Pope. Since 1918, when the Benedict XV abrogated all Canon Law including Gregory XIV's bull from 1591 which had held the penalty for betting on the conclave or the duration of a papacy was excommunication.JBriskin said:[11/4 Pope Francis]
Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant."

J Briskin I already paid for the paper version of the ST, not paying for the digital too, my main paid subscription is to the Economist, no doubt some PBers are subscribed to the Times, but it is the headline I am linking too0

This was a truly magnificent winner from stjohn - in fact one of the very best tips of the year to date on PB.com. He must feel very disappointed that there is such little appreciation for having come up with such a stonking good tip on what is after all supposed to be a betting site.stjohn said:"STFOHN", (St.John's, The Flat, Occasional Horseracing Nod), is backing Treve to win The Arc.
I'm on!
Treve to win The Arc at 14/1 Corals
He probably wonders, as do I, why bother. There isn't even a TOTY competition any more where one could expect to receive a few plaudits.

No, "grave matter" is synonymous with mortal sin. Cheating and unfair wagers which only inflict slight injury would still be considered a sin, albeit of a lesser kind.numbertwelve said:
