Just about everyone's got a seat to defend, it seems.

"I personally know a couple.
A retired bus driver and his kitchen assistant wife who bought a property many years ago, the 1960s.......they'll pay £600,000 in IHT".....
Holland run a very effective wealth tax. As things stand the rich just keep getting richer whether they do something or nothing. The poor by contrast fill the soup kitchens and their children will have no future. This is a very real issue that should be addressed. We cannot keep burying our head in the sand.
OT but related. I went to visit the Villa Messina in a relatively smart part of Nice and on both sides of the street were young girls sitting on the pavement each with a child filthy and without shoes begging. That evening I read about a penthouse flat that had just sold in Monaco for $250 million. If there ever is a day of judgement we aren't going to be judged kindly.
I kid, I know they have actually done better in many of these locals than national results would predict.
Roger, where are these soup kitchens?
Sometimes it's hard not to laugh at the hypocrisy in your posts - swanning around Nice, lunching with poodles and enjoying the delights of your second home whilst bemoaning the unfortunate lives of the poverty stricken.
You're one of the rich (just not as wealthy as those further up the food chain). Sell up, and donate the money to a homeless charity.
When will Britain wake up?
When will Britain wake up?
Not while the political and media elite continue to dhimmify.
Then they realised:
-it didn´t work
-Hollande´s definition of "rich" was not what the army of envy though it would be
For what it´s worth, I much prefer France!
Or the north.
BTW there's a local by-election coming up in hilarious circumstances, next week. A UKIP councillor has resigned after having been found guilty of arson.
He set fire to his wife's clothes during the course of an argument.

I'm sure Mr. Y0kel can give us more (and more accurate) info, but haven't they been lax letting would-be jihadists get to ISIS? I also imagine many, many Turks are wary about starting a land war with a vicious and pretty successful regime.
Another Grayling failing?

And the Greeks. Well, the ones living in the Seven Sisters Road, anyway.
Anyway, we were talking earlier on here about the financial problems of the health service now and in the near future. Those problems are about to get worse I read in the paper.
"Men drinking three pints of beer and women drinking two large glasses of wine per night and who do not cut down within two weeks should be prescribed a new drug, Nice has said.
There are an estimated 750,000 people in the UK who would be eligible for nalmefene who show no overt symptoms associated with their drinking.
The plans mean GPs will actively ask patients about their alcohol consumption even when they see them for unrelated health matter"
This new drug costs three pound a tablet and the person is supposed to take it when they fancy a drink as it supposedly stops them wanting another one. I think of the things the NHS could be spending hundreds of millions a year on people who are not problem drinkers (except as decided by some random decision) must be a about the most wasteful.
If I decide I want two drinks then that is what I want, I am not going to take a tablet to make me only want one, why should I.

It is of course a very close and relevant threat to them. I think they would welcome the chance to sort a few bods out.
I hardly ever drink (wouldn't quite describe myself as teetotal), and that's my choice. If someone offers me a drink and won't take no for an answer they'll get one with four rather than two letters. And if I choose to drink I bloody well will, and don't need the advice of the state on the matter.
Situation could get messier yet.

I like a bit of freedom in my life. Isn't it one copper for every forty civilians in Monaco? I was nearly arrested when last there - for jaywalking.
Nice may be grubbier, but I'm more at ease there.
Nice is a charming Italian town under French occupation.

I guess no one should be too surprised that the countries that like us the least are the countries of Western Europe. They'll be Muslim in another few years
In only a few years?! Why didn't the census warn us this would happen?

Allah Akbar!
Perhaps she'd like to give back a little bit extra too?
Never heard, or even heard of, that track.
It runs from Finsbury Park to Tottenham. I don't honestly know what it's like now but when I were a lad it was notable for the large Greek and Turkish populations living either side. Things sometimes got a bit tense between the two communities, especially at times like the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus, or when Panathinaikos played Galatasaray.
Incidentally, it helped teach me about arbitrage. Arsenal's ground once stood close to the Finsbury Park End, and Tottenham's home at White Hart Lane can be found at the other. Many years ago the two teams met in the Cup. They were fairly closely matched at the time. (It was a very long time ago.) But if you went to a bookies at one end of the Seven Sisters Road you could get odds against Arsenal, and at the other end odds against Tottenham.
It was a nice little earner, even after deducting the cost of the bus fare.
Toodle pip. Must away.
I vaguely recall that she was on a form of disability benefit, so it is heartening the improvement in her health!
I looked at the Wikipedia article for SSR - somehow it's a bit more culturally important than it's made out to be - I think just the name is evocative.

Mr. Punter, thanks for that interesting explanation. I wonder if the Greeks and Turks would get along better if Byzantium had never fallen...
Mr. Omnium, they do paraphrase sometimes (my German's not great but I can sometimes spot when they use different terms). I wish more DVDs had German subtitles. Baffling that Game of Thrones has tons of languages aber nicht Deutsch. Schade.
Is the Turkish military highly rated? I sort of have feeling that it is, but that may be just an unconscious thing from having seen the film "Gallipoli".

Ok, I'm getting me coat.
Nigel4England - yeah it's terrible but somehow great.
Mr. Omnium, I really liked German at school. Mentioned it before, but I used to play videogames in German sometimes. Sadly I think the last time I had that option was on the PS2.

And what on Earth is a mild alcoholic when they're about? It's like being a bit pregnant. I do hate this Nanny State malarkey. Still, minimum pricing never made it out of the starting gate, so at least that's one small mercy.

I think there is an old saying* in the navy like "if it moves shoot it, if it doesn't paint it."
I think that governments have a simple mantra too: "if it makes money tax it, if it's enjoyable ban it".
It doesn't seem to get more complicated than that.
* waits to be corrected.

Some medical bod told me the other day that the type of music I like wasn't good for me - and should restrict it to two hours a day. Seriously. And we're not talking about the volume of it either - just the content. I only mentioned it in passing as a small talk.
I was WTF - GET A LIFE... What sort of music is acceptable FFS?
EDIT - in case you're curious I mentioned Alice Cooper, PiL, The Damned and Talking Heads.
Speaking as someone who buried an alcoholic friend less than 12 months ago (the 3rd one in five years), I feel quite sure that this will never work. My friend would simply never have taken the pill, so you would have had to send someone round to make her take it every day. Someone big and beefy because when you cornered her about alcohol she would yell, fight, scream, kick and punch.
Ironically, it seems that it was the NHS that accidently killed her off. As she had multiple organ failure the doctors had to stick more and more needles in to her for this, that or the other. Eventually something somewhere was thinner than expected and a needle punctured her bowel. Since they could not operate (anaesthetic would kill her) she died of peritonitis.
Does somebody really think that handing out a pill is the answer?
On another mater, some on here have occasionally been commenting on the Turkish government failing to stop fighters going over to ISIS. Well, that's easier said than done: they have to allow refugees to cross (Turkey's done a brilliant job wrt refugees so far), which makes the border porous. Add in the official traffic (aid, supplies to rebels etc) crossing over and it's a nightmare.
And the length of the border also makes it near to impossible: 700 miles for the combined Iraq-Syria border - further than the distance between London and Wick by road, and much of it mountainous. People will get through if they are determined.
Although the question remains whether parts of the Turkish government even have the will to close the border to individuals ...
