All the major characters were well played, Beria in particular though Zhukov too.0 -
Not sure Defence Sec would be new member of Cabinet.
Remember Cameron statement that Defence Sec must always be a senior member of the Cabinet - he criticised Labour for passing Defence Sec around too much and giving it to people too junior.
OK, May is not Cameron - but suspect she will be conscious of above thinking.
So more likely current Cabinet Minister gets promoted and then new person comes in at more junior level.0 -
Indeed - that that whole area is so serious and dark makes it even more so, it sounds like.Chris_A said:

Agreed about Simon Russel Beale. It was a bit like the Tory cabinet - but with guns.dr_spyn said:

The Fallon resignation is undeniably odd - I'm going, because of what I did... but I'm not going to tell you what it was.
"fallen below the high standards that we require of the armed forces..."
??
"a number of allegations are swirling around, and many of them are obviously false..."

Fallon as Defence Sec listed at number 7 (out of 23) in Cabinet hierarchy.

BBC news says revelations during the day effectively forced May to accept Fallon could not stay in the Cabinet.0
-
When is a reshuffle not a reshuffle I wonder. I think you're right how it'llplay out, but it would be possible to say 'no wider reshuffle' but still end up moving a few cabinet ministers around in musical chairs, as you would only be moving those directly related to filling the post you had to replace eg say Transport to Defence, Local government to transport, and newby at local government.Scott_P said:
Thta's a reshuffle, which they have already denied.MikeL said:So more likely current Cabinet Minister gets promoted and then new person comes in at more junior level.
one in, one out
Yes, that is a reshuffle, but it isn't as much of one as widescale moves.0 -
As opposed to several years later, after initially trying to cover it up ?NickPalmer said:
I think that's right. FWIW, Labour has urged the police to investigate and instituted its own investigation by an independent non-party member into the official alleged to have urged a cover-up. Not sure what else they can reasonably do at this stage: it certainly doesn't feel like an attempt to bury it, since both investigations will lead to a result. But I'm also not claiming that Labour is better - in any party you get a few people who behave atrociously plus a good many more who behave dubiously. All you can really do is jump on it when it happens.oxfordsimon said:
I would be careful of making this party political. Because from what various people have been saying, harrassment doesn't restrict itself to particular political beliefs. Nor is it unique to politics.

Bit early to say the Tories have plunged into new sleaze crisis though - so far there's been, what, 2 confirmed instances? I'll grant the resignation gives it weight, but let's save the sleaze crisis talk until we've heard something a bit more substantive.0

On Defence Sec, surely it's got to be Mordaunt - she's vaguely capable (not that it seems to matter these days), has the respect of forces having served and the optics are too good. Another woman breaking up the boys club, and one that's relatively well known having done reality TV.
The interesting question is who's next? Depending on what he has actually done or not done beyond what we know, Fallon may have unintentionally lowered the bar for resignation. It was a problem for Blair in that in the earlier 'whiter than white' phase he and Alastair Campbell fired people for the merest hint of impropriety - which haunted Labour later when any mishap was leapt on as grounds for dismissal and became a huge ongoing story.0 -

It does seem that the systems for dealing with complaints, such as they are, for all of our political parties, are an incoherent mess.

Newsnight - "The problem with men".
Sorry for existing guys.0 -

It also conveys an oddly courtly view of the armed forces - we can reasonably argue that most soldiers are brave, or perhaps daring, but are they noticeably chaste? My father's family were traditionally military. I wouldn't have said that the ones I knew would have been greatly disturbed by the odd knee-pat.Nigelb said:The Fallon resignation is undeniably odd - I'm going, because of what I did... but I'm not going to tell you what it was.

'She is a caricature of a left-wing militant feminist. She thinks of herself as a champion of "wimmin's" rights but is often self-centred and dismissive of the feelings of others. She rants, raises her fist in the air and foams at the mouth. She often refers to men as "phallocrats" and "potential rapists" or just "rapists", referring to other women as "fellow lesbians" regardless of their sexual orientation.
