Just speaking to one of my colleagues in Greece, stuck there as his flight back to work here got cancelled. It looks as if he will be there until May at least. There the police patrol the streets, and arrest people who do not have an electronic permit to leave the house. Now that is a bit more totalitarian!

The biggest problem is the packs of street dogs, with nothing to eat. They killed a person a few days ago.
Holy feck. The way these bad science fiction tropes quietly infiltrate real everyday life, and are hardly even surprising when they do, is dispiriting.
He is quite OK with it. He is seeing more of his children than he has for years!

He supports the restrictions, even though there have been only 34 deaths in Thessaloniki, as there is no way that the Greek Health care system could cope with a big outbreak. It is either lockdown or disaster in his eyes.

Ah - its for total toll, not one day as the tweet suggests!

If 50,000 are dying in a single day we're all buggered.
To get anywhere near 50k by Easter Sunday there is going to have to be an incredible increase in pace. I think that is way too high.

Spain is to extend the lockdown to April 26. The pain is going to go on a lot longer than people expect. On current trends that would leave the UK in the same boat at least a week longer. I'd love to say with confidence that that would be it but the odds are that it will continue to be extended.

discussion with mates the other night found us all broadly agreeing that we couldn't see the lockdown being maintained over the Bank Holiday Weekend of Friday 8th May.

Even if its still in place, I think you will see mass disobedience that weekend.
But what difference will it being a bank holiday make? Most people are on permanent bank holidays, the pubs are shut why would anyone want to cause mass disobedience? What are they going to do, organize street parties?

Current three week period takes us to Easter, when the boffins seem to think the peak of the deaths will occur. Can easily see Government being unwilling to relax restrictions under those circumstances.

Another three weeks after that takes us to the beginning of May. Unless things go catastrophically wrong then that's probably about the right time to start loosening the shackles a little.

The graph shows that the peak of cases (by onset of symptoms) occurred the day after the lockdown!
The Italian lockdown started on 9th March, not the 17th as indicated on that chart. There was a lockdown in Lombardia prior to that.
Where do you see an indication on the chart that the lockdown was on the 17th?

The grey box starting at the 17th is an indication that data may be incomplete after that date, not a marker for the date of the lockdown.

I tell you something..,.conavirus is like a pornfest for asbergery blokes..tabulating charts and graphs and false negatives and false positives and flattening curves and comparisons with projections and R's greater than something or other....I'm intrigued by these posters but I understand the square root of fuck all....

I expect the reason he is speaking out is because his successor has agreed a deal with the government to give them free reign in return for cobra representation and inside briefings.

To be clear, I get if people think it was being a bit harsh given the circumstances, though I disagree. It was the suggestion it's awful and nasty I don't understand at all, even considering people aired some gripes about the police as well.

Starmer needs to take a back seat and work out a plan for a post-Corona world then take us all by surprise with it.

Now I'll say something disgusting: Why does testing the NHS MATTER? They're going to get sick anyway, and you don't have 100% of staff working at any one time. Surely the worst position to be in is to be a nurse who's immune?

Eh? That was the point - some people hate him. I didn't say he wasn't a winner, he's proven that he is. Divisive doesn't mean you cannot win. This was a point about a positive governmental poll rating, it's literally happened one in the last 10 years, I don't think it is slur on Boris to suggest obviously that will not last.

I'm going to start boo-ing journalists every Tuesday at 8pm. They could be doing something functional, like providing a centre for information for what to do about Covid, and Covid-adjacent things. People don't know how to get the funds for self-employed people, they don't know what to do about their energy supplier, they don't know what to do if they need medicine but can't get out. That's their job in the time of a national crisis, not bloody hashtags about #torygenocide, or panicking because the schools might close on Friday when for some reason they want it done on Wednesday, as if there's no reason for it to be a Friday.

    #boojournalism

That is not journalists' job; that is the government's job.

Just think what it will be like, when this is over, when we have that *first* drink at the pub, the *first* lunch in a restaurant, that *first* get together with loads of friends. We will maybe cry. We will certainly not forget it.

On the day this finally ends, I intend to spend an evening in a different pub for the next seven days.
Probably unwise. Going to too many is an open invite to the first hotspot of a new wave.

It will not be a generalised "all clear" but a gradual one. Perhaps pubs and restaurants opening alternate tables, and no more than 4 in a group, etc.

Its going to be hard getting reservations for when that happens and the pubs are going to packed.

Foxy...I'll leave this one for you to sort out....
Good plan ;-) Hope your nephews are doing okay!
Thanks....I caught up with up with a nephew just now who told me that he was tempted to run up and down the street in his scrubs as the clapping began...

I noted Casino's eye rolling....but the clapping helps even if most NHS staff take the piss out of it....the staff are really quite proud.....

His survival tip is to project to NHS staff that you want to live in the most positive way possible considering you are seriously ill.....with countless patients it is just human nature that NHS staff cling to cases they make an emotional connection to...

    That can't be right:

Ah - its for total toll, not one day as the tweet suggests!

If 50,000 are dying in a single day we're all buggered.
To get anywhere near 50k by Easter Sunday there is going to have to be an incredible increase in pace. I think that is way too high.
Doubling every 2.5 days gets you close, 38k.
That’s still quite a long way short of 50k and I think that our rate of increase will start to slow next week.

You are wrong...we will emerge from this like hibernating bears...slowly, cautiously and warily....

Journalists do not have a duty to inform in a time of international crisis? OK!

I can see a lot of people wanting to have a house party or barbecue by that date.
As long as they have their hands dipped in indelible ink so that they can be denied treatment if they get ill, then why not? It’s a good chance to rid us of the arrogant buggers who think they have no responsibility to anyone but themself.
