"I have relished today, and the humiliation of the Left."
The humiliation of the left? Did I sleep through that? I thought there was some kind of funeral going on?
By the way, Attlee is the most radical PM we have ever had, and a fair bit of the good that he did even survived the devastation of the 1980s.
THIS Attlee? -
"Clement Richard Attlee was born on the 3rd January 1883 at the family home at Putney in London, being the seventh of eight children born to Henry Attlee and his wife Ellen Bravery Watson. His grandfather Richard Attlee had made a considerable amount of money from a corn mill in Surrey and was able to provide handsomely for his seven sons.
"In Henry's case he provided a suitable education that enabled him to become a solicitor and a senior partner in the firm of Druces and Attlee, and later President of the Law Society. Thus the Attlee family were most emphatically upper-middle class; the Attlee home in Putney featured a dedicated billiard room with its own full sized billiard table, and the family employed a cook, a parlour maid, a housemaid and a gardener, with a governess for the children when necessary; the Attlee holiday home on the Essex coast came with two hundred acres of land attached."
What's that got to do with whether he was radical as a prime minister or not?
Because - duh - Mrs Thatcher was radical simply by being who she was: probably the most humbly born Tory prime minister ever, and, of course, the first and only female prime minister in the entire history of the UK. Even if she had achieved NOTHING ELSE IN HER PREMIERSHIP she would be extremely significant.
However she also defeated communism, destroyed socialism, overturned a Fascist junta in Argentina, and saved her nation from bankruptcy. Then she made us all rich during her elevenses.
Respect for the Lady. And goodnight from me.
In terms of humbly born Tory PMs Major surely has her beat.
I'm trying to work out whether defeating communism or 'making us all rich' is the bigger hyperbole.
To confirm sky news are running Ludgate hill every 15 mins which is why little Richard is talking absolute bollocks One of the sky cameraman was stood right behind me. You will see that footage
I suggest wee Timmy you go back to HQ and verify next line of attack........this one isn't working
Bashar turned up on TV today in an interview shouting the odds, pointing the finger at a number of countries from the West. But his most noticeable target was his neighbours in Jordan. At the same time as he pointed the finger, the US announced it was sending a co-ordination team from one of its army divisions to Jordan should the need for a joint task force arise. In short its the typical advance party that leads off the process that could end up with many thousands of troops. The US saw what was going to come from Assad in the tv interview is making a statement that it was preparing to defend the Jordanians if need be.
Assads interview coincides with a swing back to the regime on the battlefield in a number of areas particularly around Damascus and the strategically critical Homs. Using a lot of flattening firepower Assad's forces have lifted a number of threatening situations and are now trying to press home the local successes. If they can do so, and overstretch is still a problem, the rebels who have made slow but steady progress overall may find themselves on the back foot rather quickly. The current reverses are noticeable and potentially strategic is Assad's forces can hold after clearing.
Meanwhile the White House still doesn't know what it wants...
Just occurred to me: Thatcher is the humblest, most working class person EVER to receive such obsequies from the British state.
Churchill was an aristo. Royals are royals. Wellington was a duke. And so forth.
Thatcher was a grocer's daughter, yet here was the Queen turning up to bow her head in salutation, in a "state funeral" at St Paul's. Remarkable.
Why don't lefties see this?
Are you sure it's true?
Which other prime ministers have had state or ceremonial funerals?
Churchill: aristo Palmerston: aristo Nelson: quasi-aristo (mother grand niece of prime minister Walpole) Gladstone: Etonian, almost aristo
As for royalty, well, they are royalty, as I say.
Who else is there? Cromwell? He is English, not British, but he was gentry, anyway.
I can't think of anyone in all English history, let alone British history, who was of such obviously humble background as Thatcher, who has received such stately pomp and circumstance in death.
Carson was a self-made lawyer - does that count.

Well, you will just have to hope you are still alive to see the public outpouring of grief at the funeral of Ed "Man of the People" Miliband. He travels on trains don't you know, sometimes not in First Class.

Interesting that people still send letters in this day and age.
I'll introduce the poor deluded chap to Tommy Sheridan when I have a spare moment.

Is that it? Really? Wow, that's...er, impressive.
"However she also defeated communism"
No she didn't.
"destroyed socialism"
She didn't do that either.
"overturned a Fascist junta in Argentina"
Nope.
"and saved her nation from bankruptcy"
I think you're getting her mixed up with Scottish oil.
(I don't know about Salmond's background so can't comment on that).

You're not making a persuasive case that the events at Ludgate Hill were in any way linked to Miliband.
