A new ComRes poll commissioned by Jewish News has found the CON lead over the label ‘the nasty party’, memorably coined by TMay at the Party’s 2002 Conference, is now being challenged by Corbyn’s LAB. The poll found that while 34% said they thought the Conservatives are ‘the nasty party’, almost as many – 31% – said the same of LAB.

I’m trying to remember if we had all of this in 1995/6 or 2013/4 when there was a feeling from labour supporters that they might take control of the reigns of power.

We have the leader of the opposition openly attacking the concept of a free press. Not just claiming to get a poor press, or an unfair press, but openly telling them that they will no longer be editorially independent if they win. And then threatening companies that we have contracts with...

There’s a lot of ‘change is coming’. We could just dismiss it as bravado, but seeing how momentum have infiltrated the organs of the Labour Party and have turned it into a nasty vindictive and malignant being, how will they act if they are in charge of the country?

Well sure, but they naturally want to be all things to all men right now. On Brexit they have not been principled - see previous comments on their 'masterly inactivity' - but have been smarter than on some other issues.

Yes, it's still very problematic. But since he cannot get one without the tories collapsing, which might lead to a GE in any case, he can risk it perhaps. He can play it safe and say it will have deal, no deal, remain as is as options. Cynical, to be sure, and delivery would be hard, but is fighting a referendum call really one he wants? Is it one he cares enough about? Ok his position on Europe has been pretty hard in the past, but he's not in office, if we end up leaving soft or hard he'll deal with it as needed then.

Now you are being silly again - as noted before, if the EU's rejection of her proposals is based on their principles as they claim, then her delivering it poorly played no part in the outcome as it was fundamentally flawed no matter how well she might have sold it. Do you believe the EU was minded to go against their fundamental principles but were stunned that May is not a good speaker and her article was strongly worded? What fools do you think they are?

I still think this is one area Corbyn might give in, though I accept plenty of logic says otherwise. But the members do really seem to want it, and his moderate critics will not be able to say he never changes position or listens to them (or members who disagree with him) nor would it necessarily cause any problems since they may never need to implement it depending on what happens with the government.

I'm skeptical of that. I do agree that whatever one thinks on the Orban issue it won't have impacted on most people even if it should (though Labour would be wise to bring it up all the time) but I just don't see 'the masses' being rocked by the anti-semtism stuff. It definitely escalated over the summer, there were some people openly calling Corbyn personally antisemitic when very few even of his stern critics did so before, but it's not like they are falling massively behind, and I'm inclined to think that while it is wrong to think it certain that in a new GE campaign any Tory lead would evaporate again, if the impact on polling at the moment is just that the Tories have started to get more regular small leads, then not that many people are very put off, which means those who are are probably easier to entice back when push comes to shove.

Not necessarily. Presently there is no plan to get a deal with the EU agreed, let alone through the Commons. If it doesn't happen a GE is very much on the cards.

And as expected he will cynically switch direction on a referendum - he is pretty smart on that issue, as it is not as though angry at him for resisting it until now will hold it against him so long as they get what they want.

If the Tories do make a deal he never has to actually deliver a referendum even though he backs it, and until one happens he can fudge what the stance would be so as not to piss off enough remainers or leavers to abandon the party. And where would they even go? If they want a referendum and the Tories don't offer one they aren't going there. If they care so much about remain that they want an unequivocal switch to a remain stance they'd already be in the LDs.

I don't see any evidence that a fresh general election, which would presumably include Theresa May campaigning, would result in a House of Commons any more decisive than the last.

The most likely result would be the Tories lost another 15-20 seats and it was even more hung.
