Charles Moore agrees with me that Miliband is both frightening and dangerous

'Mr Miliband’s move on energy is not an isolated electoral ploy. It is part of an ideology which, though ultimately pauperising and totalitarian, will always have an appeal when capitalism gets itself into a mess.

Like a good Marxist, he detects the cowardice latent in capitalists. He finds weakness, and strikes. Defenders of a free society won’t win unless they are tough and clear-minded enough to strike back.'

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/ed-miliband/10356363/The-real-target-should-not-have-been-Miliband-senior-but-his-son.html

This Miliband character needs all the scrutiny we can give him. He must not, under any circumstances, be allowed to worm his way into a position of power. And to damnation with his poor, hurt feelings!

Charles Moore doesn't like the leader of Labour Party ? Geez, when will the revelations stop coming !

    Good afternoon, everyone.

Incidentally, the timing of the post-race piece may be after the highlights. I plan on awaking to listen to the race (starts 7am) but if the tiresome Legard is doing the commentary I'll switch it off and wait for the highlights.

On unpleasantness: Mr. Punter, I must disagree. It is incontestable that proportionally there is more unpleasantness, and I would argue the same is true in absolute terms. Repetition of negative or derogatory posts, the use of manufactured terms (such as a now banned term that could mean a group of cows) and an unwillingness to concede when (even on a proven, factual basis) wrong by a small but vocal minority is driving away neutrals and those who simply don't want to put up with it.

    Fairy nuff, Morris.

Personally I think the lack of good betting opportunities is a greater disincentive, but you may be right.

Mr. Punter, to combat that, a Tuesday Tips (or similar) regular thread to try and identify political bets might help. Wouldn't work for tennis (too frequent) or F1 (too infrequent), of course.

"Geez"? What is the relevance of the name of an ancient Ethiopean language in that sentence, Wittering?

'In contrast to Easterross I find the endless right wing trolling on PB its least attractive element. I find the victimhood displayed by some posters who are willing to dish it out but all too quick to cry foul when they get it back pretty sickening and the endless posts about tim utterly tedious."

Couldn't agree more and always from the dullards.

If there is anything wrong with PB it's that seriously interesting posters like Kelly and Dickson get banned yet posters who just tweet and re tweet and vast passages of right wing drivel without a single original contribution are allowed to litter the site.

Kelly and Carlotta were worth the entrance fee on their own. Regurgitated Daily Mail just saps the will to live.

One of my interests is US politics. The Virginia governor election on Nov 5th is particularly nasty and close leading to some good betting opportunities if we can find a market. Or even create one by asking a bookmaker to price it up. The thread headers would be educational to those who don't follow such things as well as profitable for those who do.

There are plenty of topical betting areas to explore if we cast our net wider.

Mr. Punter, whilst the balance of site has ebbed and flowed since 2007 (when I joined) in terms of pleasantness it has undoubtedly declined. That may be the prime cause of fewer punters, and not that many new members joining. It's not tempting to chew the cud when there's so much astroturf around.

    snip

But I'm with you on any request for a lightening of the tone. Why can't other posters be as sweet and lovely as you and I?
I would like to point out that the chap who posted as Martin Day (who was actually someone he was at school with and envied) was suffering from fairly severe depression and associated mental illnesses. I occasionally hear from him and he is on constant medication and now living with his father.

There is one poster on here who puts a great many people off. He is the person who seems incapable of referring to anyone from the centre-right without insulting them and he also happens to be the person who has posted far more posts on here than anyone else. He seems to spend on average 12-15 hours a day on PB when he is here. He is certainly the reason I vastly reduced my contributions. I was frankly getting tired of his constant insults and also the vitriol he directed towards several female PB posters including one who was in tears on the phone one evening to me because of what he had said to/about her.
    Fair comments Easterross.

Re Martin Day, I was on line THAT evening when he had a rather nasty meltdown. It was clear that he was in a very bad place emotionally.

I hope he gets the help he needs and finds himself some peace.

Re the other issue. We all know what he is like and his tactics are very transparent.

I for one get bored by the... lets call it misrepresenting ... that he engages in and I am sure that some thinner skinned individuals can be bullied by him, which is exactly what he wants.

To that end I think it was a mistake to mention that a poster rang you in tears over his actions.

It will not upset him, will not cause him feelings of guilt and will embolden him to continue in a similar fashion.

Doubt if anybody could find one decent political tip per week, Morris. Lack of markets. And personally I wouldn't want to be burdened with the responsibility of finding such a bet. I occasionally put up horseracing tips, but only when it suits me.

Elnadwa in the 9.15 at Wolverhampton, since you ask.

Btw, I notice StJohn popped in earlier with a tip for the Arc. For those who don't know him, his selections are generally pretty good.

Betting on such markets is very difficult now since the demise of Intrade. You cannot of course bet within the USA so you are dependent on the more adventurous bookies here in the UK.

I'll forward your suggestion to Shadsy. He has some cojones.

Re abusive repetitive posters who appear to have almost free rein, it's probably worth remembering that our allegedly genial host couldn't be bothered to watch a recent edition of Question Time because the politicians were being polite to each other.

    Says it all.

There's still a lot of good stuff amongst the repellent trolling though.

The most tedious aspect of this website is the endless parade of "poor me" victimhood posts, always from the same individuals. Indeed some of them have been posting in the last few minutes about what poor victims they are, how they are picked on, harassed and bullied for no reason whatsoever, or so they would have us believe. These are always, without exception, the same people who day after day regale us with oh so side splitting funnies about tim...."tim this, tim that, wee timmy this, tim .does this"...ad nauseam. Then, without any sense of self awareness whatever, they drone on about being bullied, mispresented or obsessed on by the same person, terms that could be readily used in spades in relation to their own behaviour.

Then we have the endless, repetitive pastings from the Daily Mail, Telegraph, Times etc with shock horror, earth shattering revelations that some right wing commentator somewhere doesn't like Ed Miliband / the Labour Party/ the BBC etc etc., observations that come as a surprise to nobody except the terminally dim and which offer nothing whatsoever to this site. We have the same situation with inane tweets. One poster, who readily complains about other people spending all day here going on about the same thing, spends almost his entire day here reposting banal tweets about Ed Miliband that tell or offer us nothing.

With regards to political betting posts, they are few and far between here. The biggest money I ever made from a political bet was as a result of the South Shields by election. During one thread tim made a posting about an arbitrage bet he had discovered relating to the % of the Labour vote. As I recall he described it as "the near perfect arb". Indeed it was and I piled in and profited handsomely. Not one person here acknowledged what he had said and, predictably, subsequent posts were the usual "tim this, tim that" drivel. I am not arguing that anyone's behavior here is perfect, including my own, or that tim is some kind of betting guru. However, it is a telling insight in to the motives of so many on this site that such a good betting find and posting warranted not one mention in any subsequent comments. The tim obsession and political stance takes tedious precedence.

tim is the bodily incarnation of good stuff amongst repellent trolling. It's a shame that those who wish to defend the one do so by ignoring the other.

...and bang on cue along comes another example. Try an original approach and a comment without the word "tim" in it.

As far as I'm aware, I've made precisely one post with tim's name in it and it was on this thread.

I think you need to whine about someone else.

Echoing several people's comments earlier today, I'd be far more tempted to de-lurk and actually post every now and then if the atmosphere wasn't so negative. Mind you, it is just a small number of people who (IMO) create that negative atmosphere, and I note tim appears to be banned for a bit...

I'm afraid I can't offer any betting wisdom, though; I'm just someone who's interested in all things political. (I'm also - declaration of interest - a member of the Lib Dems. Yes there are a few of us left!)
