I'm wondering how they're going to get him off. I don't think they have anyone who knows how to switch off the mike. Doesn't he know the duke of Edinburgh is 97? How much time can he waste on this?
Not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a relatively short period in the 60s and 70s when marriage was more popular with working-class than middle-class people.
Not my cup of tea, but then I'm not a fan of regular churchgoing style either - the americans seem to put some real energy and passion into it with their preaching at least. But then I'm watching something else in another window anyway.
Good pub quiz question this. Three different songs, with the same title, that were all number 1 within a year of each other. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NyoTvgPn0rU
On topic, the politicians know what they're doing. Right now the voters love nostalgia and hate freedom. They're just going to have to let the fire rise up again and wait for it to burn itself out.
I'm no Christian, but if I had to, I'd much rather listen to the American guy than the usual bland platitudes. Some genuine passion and enthusiasm for his faith. Whatever next?
Ditto. At least no-one will be falling asleep during his sermon ...
Yes - good to see the bride having significant input into the ceremony (and it will play very well abroad - what price those stuffy old Brits?)
It shows what a real chasm there is between British and American culture.
We would say they are far too earnest and lacking in restraint and dignity.
As MaxPB is finding, a wedding should be about two people, with others celebrating their future happiness. It should not be about anyone else. If this is what the couple wanted, then fair enough: and it seems a reasonable synergy between British pomp and US excess.
Besides, the royal family relies in evolution. Some were worried that there would be a problem with the fact that she was a divorceee, or that she is mixed-race - two things that would have been show-stoppers a few decades ago. The royal family is slowly evolving with the times.
If this 'experiment' in the sermon is not successful, it will be quietly dropped (though I doubt that particular preacher could ever be quiet!)

A logical point.
Of course, what most Brits really want is the pretty church buildings and ceremonies, without any of the religious guff.
Some preachers used to go on for literal hours (no doubt there are places where they still do), so could lay preachers - imagine sitting through 4 hours of an Oliver Cromwell speech

We got married on an 1860-built warship. An elderly relative, somewhat aged and very religious, apparently said: "It suits them more than a church."

A friend of mine was telling me there are organisations that seek to provide just that - meeting in (hopefully) grand buildings weekly for a singalong, some words about being good to each other etc, just no prayer.
I do know someone who apparently got married at the Roman baths at, well, Bath, though sadly no one was dressed as a legionary, which feels like a missed opportunity.
We had some of those on Thursday. My Dad's speech was one of the shortest and his was the main one. People in politics and religion just love to hear the sound of their own voice

Specially for you Dixie. Plenty more if this is what floats your boat

The bit about love was fine. When he started on about cars, power and fire ..... well ..... that’s when the red pencil should have been deployed. Ruthlessly. It was unnecessarily repetitious.
Edited: and it was a bit impersonal. It woukd have been nicer if it could have addressed itself just a touch to - and about - the two most important people there.
It does seem the case that while you will find a majority responding to polls saying that they are not particularly interested, those that are, and those that casually pay attention, will ensure it is the main topic of conversation by some distance.
Just been popping in and out whilst cutting the grass but god we’re good at this stuff. Wife says that the preacher should have quit whilst ahead but otherwise pretty perfect.
Anyway, it's time to get back out and enjoy a sunny cycle ride. Congrats to Harry and Meghan. And what does their union mean in the context of Brexit?!
Excellent service, even the preacher have a memorable if long sermon and now the carriage passing through the packed streets of Windsor for the carriage procession

I agree - altogether very well done, and the preacher would have been even more effective had he been a little bit shorter....a minor niggle in a jolly good show...
Monarchism is essentially a form of Socialism! "What are you on about, Sunil?" I hear you cry!
Well, consider:
1) Monarchs have a job for life, which is quintessentially Socialist!
2) The hereditary principle, a feature of Socialist dynasties around the world, such as the Kennedys in the USA, Nehru-Gandhis in India, and the Kims in North Korea!
3) Pomp and circumstance - Trooping the Colour is after all merely a toned down version of all those North Korean and (former) Soviet military parades!
So, my fellow PBers, I put it to you that Monarchism = Socialism!

You posted that yesterday and are wrong on this.
As I said monarchy is the essence of conservatism, as gsrdenwalker pointed out along with support for the family, the Union and the nation state. In relation to the subject of this threat that is even more than free trade and capitalism which have also been liberal concepts.
Plenty of conservative dynasties too like the Bushes and the Churchills

I only caught a part of it, but as a Catholic, I enjoyed the part I heard.

Yes I think 5 minutes shorter would have done but he certainly hit home

Yes. I will never forget that my car is propelled by tamed fire.

Topping up the petrol at Shell will never be the same again!

They needed an intervention from TwistedFireStopper.
I was just a teensy bit surprised that there was no curtsey/bow to HMQ before they walked back down the aisle.
Harry looked very much more relaxed and happy in the carriage ride.
There was something gloriously eccentric but wonderful about having all that pageantry - the coach, the Household Guards etc - going down narrow ordinary town streets before the ride to the castle.
A beautiful day. Auguri e figli maschi, as they say in Italy.

Kennedy's socialist ? He does write some utter crap.
Comments
Now, he’s asking who arrived by car..
Jesus Christ. Sit down.
He should have stopped at the story of love, and sat down about 10 minutes ago.
Time for him to shut up.
Harry and Meghan look as if they want the whole thing over and finished.

As is her mother - a good-looking woman.
I've never asked precisely what she meant ...

But hey if they liked it that’s all that matters.
A royal wedding for lefties!
Outrageous.
Other than that, it’s superb.
The preacher was utterly brilliant.
The best TV in decades.
Uniting everyone they can around the crown - no matter what their political beliefs- is the monarchy’s job.
But the preacher man was VERY entertaining.
What a wonderful advert for our nation.

I though 'Osborne the near perfect chancellor' would take some beating but that's gone.
As for the blue skies, green grass, historic buildings..... UK Plc never looked better.
I watched with a full on, “woke” millennial Corbynista and she was hooked.
PS the preacher was superb. The Episcopalians should ship him over here full time.

Passion, humour, dynamism. That's how to preach.
I thought it was a lovely service. Best wishes to Harry and Meghan.
Now let's bring on the Republic!
Now do Momentum campaign for Daby, or run one of their own against her?
