Mr. Toms, I've probably shared this before but it's a cool fact so I shall share it again:

Peloton means 'firing squad' in German.

    http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Peloton

Edited extra bit: although my German A-level did teach me useful terms like die Peitsche (whip) and Molotow Cocktails, I learnt this one recently whilst researching German words starting with Pel- for a river name (for lore reasons).

    Mr Dancer,

By virtue of Peloton deriving from the French word for "Pellet".

Boris in his column today mentions his grandfather was President of the Commission of the European Court of Human Rights. While the article was good, not sure mentioning that was really the best way to appeal to the Tory grassroots!

Coalition takes narrow 52-48 lead in new Newspoll after last poll had the parties tied in Oz
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-07-23/newspoll-shows-labor-support-receding-after-rudd-bounce/4836658

A Morgan poll still has the ALP ahead with Labor down half a point to 41.5%, the Coalition steady on 41%, and the Greens up two points to 9%. On two-party preferred their lead up from 51.5-48.5 to 52-48. On respondent-allocated preferences, the lead is steady at 52.5-47.5.

Dr. Prasannan, I did not know that.

Mr. Welshowl, there may well be two words. Also, the Wiktionary definition previously said it was a circular firing squad, so that may be a difference.

My German's a bit Scheisse these days, but German Wiktionary has:
    http://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/Peloton
"[3] Kommando zur Durchführung einer Exekution"
and Erschießungskommando is listed as a synonym.

I was having a late lunch in my favorite neighborhood watering hole when the news broke.

Everybody there (about 6 folks) congratulated me and the owner bought me a drink. It felt somewhat odd.

Needless to say, the news networks here have nothing else on but royal baby coverage.

I have learned that the 43rd monarch since 1066 will be a boy.

Unless Prince William predeceases his father the baby will as eventual eldest son of the monarch be Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Strathearn in Scotland and eventually Prince of Wales and Great Steward and Prince of Scotland.

Yes there are flaws in the scientific process. But it's the best we've got, and has been extraordinarily successful over the ages, pretty much creating the modern world despite its flaws.

And of course there's no objective reason to assume that the theory that human CO2 emissions are warming the climate (which is strongly supported by the evidence) has any more flaws in terms of the process by which it has been constructed and tested than, say, Enstein's theories, which are similarly strongly supported by evidence (to the extent that GPS wouldn't wouldn't work without taking them into account - which still doesn't "prove" the theory correct, of course).

    Anthony Wells on the YouGov/

'The Sun politics team have tweeted out tonight’s YouGov poll already, the topline figures are CON 35%, LAB 38%, LDEM 11%, UKIP 10%. This is the lowest Labour lead YouGov have shown for over a year, and the highest Conservative share since the end of the January. I’ll just give my normal caveat for any poll showing unusual figures – sure, it could be the start of a further narrowing of Labour’s lead, or it could just be normal variation within the margin of error. Don’t get overexcited unless it’s maintained in polls later this week."

Heir(esse)s presumptive: has anyone mentioned Matilda, daughter of Henry I? She was definitely the legitimate heir, and actually ruled for a few months in 1141 during the civil war. She titled herself Lady of the English and in my view should be given a place on the English king list.

Matilda is officially recognised as a proper reigning monarch according to the listings in the Guinness Book of Answers.

It's being strongly hinted on R4 that the NannyCam posturing on the internet could encompass violence and gambling as well in it's net.

It happens already. Vodafone adult content filter blocks you from checking what the lottery numbers were. PB is a definite no-no.

I'm on Vodafone and this drives me effing crazy. If I'm away from my desk I use the phone to manage the site and too often I get the content control screen banning me from editing and writing posts.

Maybe that's part of the plan.

Considering what a pigs ear the elected representatives of the people made, especially 1997-2010, I think a rational defence is more than possible. Mind you, I've always considered the decline became irreversible in 1832.

The problem is that people see 'the scientific process' as something pure and unsullied, a bible or rulebook that all scientists and science follows. They see someone described as 'a scientist' and automatically believe them. It is the 'trust me, I'm a scientist' effect. This can have very negative consequences.

    Corrupted science is no science.

On your second paragraph: I wish AGW 'believers' would not treat 'sceptics' as one bunch. It is perfectly possible to believe that man is warming the climate (the argument you give above), whilst also believing that the effect is minuscule compared to the natural climatic variations. And that is something that is far from being proven scientifically.

There is also the other heretical point of view that it may be cheaper, easier and safer to perform mitigation for the effects of climate change, rather than try to stop AGW.

I have had many meaningful and pleasant conversations with people with varying views on AGW. I have sadly had a handful of conversations with people for whom it is more a religion than science, and these are far from pleasurable.

A good question to ask yourself is: "What evidence would I need for me to take the opposite point of view from that I currently hold?" Sadly, for many people there is no such evidence.

Frankly, there are nutjobs on all sides of the debate. In this, AGW is not much different from politics ...

    Edited for silliness.

    Duke of Strathearn

My failing sight still reads this as Duke of Streatham. Very worrying!

    Viscount Vauxhall
    Baron Brixton
    Count Croydon

    :)
    Earl's Court
    Mornington Crescent

Edit: Assuming we were playing Trumpington's Variations? That would have been illegal under Tudor Court Rules

More zone 1 Oyster card variation. Mornington Crescent being zone 2 I discounted. Anyway surely the final destination is King's Cross? :-)

    LOL

Still not quite up there with Seth O Logue's inept spin when he predicted that Lansley would be PM but pretty amusing all the same.

I remember Monty Python's Meaning of Life which turned to "birth in the third world" - Yorkshire - which was then followed by this wicked send up of Oliver!

What on Earth has the Sperm Song got to do with "Oliver"?

    Anthony Wells on the YouGov/

'The Sun politics team have tweeted out tonight’s YouGov poll already, the topline figures are CON 35%, LAB 38%, LDEM 11%, UKIP 10%. This is the lowest Labour lead YouGov have shown for over a year

    http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/blog/archives/7867

Now theres a surprise. When the Conservatives have a 5 point lead at the end of 2014 some people will still be saying that swingback isn't occurring. :0

I want him to be called George Louis Alexander Daniel (acronym = GLAD). Middle names are named after Prince Louis of Luxembourg, Skandar Keynes & Alex Pettyfer, and Daniel Radcliffe (respectively).

An honest and unusually accurate sentence from Mr Hodges in that piece:

Even though I'm an ardent Royalist*, I worry that the current support for the Monarchy is largely down to Her Majesty, and Prince Charles maybe a great recruiting sergeant for the Republican cause.

*Though I'd have been a Roundhead during the civil war, I mean, who can rationally defend the Principle of the Divine Rights of Kings versus the elected representatives of people

Although, ironically, Cromwell (Thomas) was one of the great advocates of the DRoK as part of his work on behalf of HVIII. Separation of the source of the King's authority from the church in Rome.
