Don't you find the new unlocking mechanism infuriating? Also the new notifications for mail etc are way more intrusive by taking up more space. The new OS is a disappointment for me at least.
After seven years of sliding to unlock it hasn't been a seamless transition
Glad I ain't the only one. I at least changed the setting where you don't have to physically click it which was a real pain in the bum.

general > accessibility > home button.. rest to unlock. Another way is to click, swipe and click again, then it comes up with the number keypad. I get the impression Apple put this in without caring about how crap the implementation was.

A minor flaw in the software that is easily fixed.
Sturgeon won't be able to hold the line for ever on independence referendum only when the polls say so. At some point SNP activists will insist the whole point of their party is independence and so they need to take steps to achieve it

It's even worse on an iPad, because the home button is fixed. When you use a iPhone 99% of the time you hold it the same way, not with an iPad. I won't be surprised to see this behaviour changed in an update, or with iOS 11.
Microsoft's approach of swiping over a screen edge, which they used a lot with Windows 8, worked very well, and took up zero screen space. It didn't matter which way the device was held, each edge did something different, and followed the rotation of the screen. The bottom edge revealed the taskbar, app bar, or was used to unlock, the left edge revealed the switcher, right edge the Charms Bar (commands), the top edge closed the app or split the screen.
None of this made much sense on desktops, and was not popular with users, but on tablets it worked great. It may have bombed as a product but I think Windows 8 tablets had the best touch UI we've seen.

This is typical of a certain Metropolitan worldview., which had convinced itself, before the referendum, that its outlook - Europhile, multicultural, pro-immigration - was shared by the vast majority of the population of the UK; and that something changed when the country narrowly voted to leave the EU. They thought that as lots of people in the provinces voted for the Labour and Lib Dem parties, lots of people in the provinces were as Europhile and multicultural as they were. But the country did not change with the referendum; the country never widely shared this Metropolitan outlook in the first place. The second error, of course, of this viewpoint, is that Britain is now the polar opposite of this view. The country is now no more racist and isolationist than it ever was multicultural and internationalist. Nothing has changed, except that some people in London maybe have a slightly more realistic view of what the rest of the country is like.

Surely not. Call Me Dave had that as one of his achievements! Along with income tax cuts. The fact that they did not appear in Cameron's 2010 manifesto is just an unfortunate typing error....

Re the iPhone 7, I have the OnePlus Three. It's half the price of the iPhone, and is quite the best Android phone I've ever used. It's extremely well made (much more premium than Samsung), and very quick.
If anyone is in the market for a new phone, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
It seems some in the media are already gunning for the PM. Her low profile obviously irritates them but I hope she doesn't change, as it is not her style. Unfortunately it allows the "new bastards" Soubry, Morgan and Osborne to dominate the airwaves.
The Conservatives need to be very careful, because I think Labour, in spite of their dire position at the moment, could come together very quickly. Especially, if some of the moderates get back on the front bench, as I personally think they will.
There does seem to be a more sensible brand of Guardian comments BTL than I've seen in a while, it won't be long until they get banned and their comments purged from the servers. Can't have sensible thinking in lala land.
Quite unrelatedly, I have had this saved on a sticky from the time Gove was a contender for PM. It is a Guardian comment which says that Gove is
"A man who talks about taking back control having handed hundreds of schools handed over to unaccountable private interests via the academy scam. A man who spits on the victims of the first world war by rewriting history and making it seem like a grand British endeavour. A dog of the extreme-right who called the NHS a 60 year old mistake, belligerently embraced a debunked framework for education whilst ignoring the chastisement of the nations with best schooling practice and lied and lied and lied to the electorate to ensure the disastrous out-vote. An utterly despicable human being bereft of any worthwhile qualities who would happily rape, torture and murder every single person in Britain for an improvement in his status. And likely to be the next PM now that Boris is gone."

I used an Xperia XZ a couple of days ago, ordered on a few minutes later. I think it's the best phone I've ever used. Looking forward to it arriving. Plus, for a branded phone it was reasonably priced and comes with free headphones I can give away as a birthday present to someone.
A lot of us felt like that from 1st May 1997 to 23rd June 2016
A revealing set of dates. I suspect you're not the only one whose delight at Brexit is really about domestic politics.
Of course it is - we had a permanent unelected Liberal Democrat government based in brussels once Blair got rid of all Majors EU opt outs and brought the Human Wrongs act in and a rubber stamp machine in westminster.
That ended on 24th June, defacto, with de jure to follow

Was Anna Soubry MP drunk on QT last night or was she just channeling the program she co-hosted in the early 90's - Central Weekend - Where the guests were very often "over-emotional" attention seekers, cranks and general loons?
Didn't see QT - what makes you think that?
I do remember Central Weekend, about which it was widely claimed that the audience were primed with copious alcohol in advance. Sort of like QT organised by Jeremy Kyle.
A more interesting question about Anna Soubry is which seat will she contest: Nottm S and Beeston; Broxtowe and Hucknall or Ken's old stomping ground?
I answered this (so far as I can) on an earlier thread. Broxtowe and Hucknall is much more Tory (Nottm S and Beeston is Guardian Central with a dash of Morning Star). My understanding is that the Tory party (like Labour) strongly discourages chiucken runs to safer seats, and that a sounding was taken about Rushcliffe before 2015 and firmly rejected.

They are very lucky that Samsung stumbled so hard with the Note 7 battery and the brand damage that will incur. The iPhone 7 just doesn't bring anything new to the table, speaking to people with the 6S none see a reason to upgrade so far.

They were already on the way to doing that by sticking with a proprietary charger port instead of micro usb like everyone else.

The iPhone 7 is a necessary evolutionary step to the 8, which will reportedly have neither headphone jack nor home button.

My biggest complaint is the clunky changes to the interface. It felt much smoother previously, now we have huge notification banners, and an unnecessary extra step to unlock the phone. I don't care about notifications on the lock screen, but Apple thinks I should care.

This is nothing like removing obsolete media drives. The headphone jack is still ubiquitous.
They've just been surveying people on whether they use the headphone jack on their laptops. Apparently it didn't occur to them that having proprietary headphones that don't work with anything but your phone might be inconvenient.

No - they've already thought it through - coming on the new iMac - the new iPhone headphone jack... proprietary connections massively encourage cross-selling of products as people want stuff which works with other stuff - they are just betting that the iPhone is ubiquitous / popular enough to drive iMac sales etc.

More trouble on planet Hillary. Been saying this for a while, she isn't going to benefit from demographics as much as people believe. Partly because she's not a very good candidate and partly because over the last 8 years the Dems have had the White House and not really done much to improve the lives of minorities. In the last few weeks Trump hasn't said or done anything controversial re minorities, even his visit to Mexico went okay. He's never going to win a majority or even a decent share but I could see him get 27-33% among Hispanics, 9-14% among blacks and 35-40% among Asians and others.
Trump currently trails Clinton nationwide by 1.2% - which is about 4 million. The population of California is 39.14 Million and trump trails by more than 10% there.
So, if we exclude California, Trump is actually the more popular candidate in the USA.

I have a very nice pair of headphones and the wires never tangle, most decent headphones have anti-tangle wires. It's just the rubbish that Apple sell for loads of money to their worshippers that's completely awful.

I agree it's easy, but it's a rather expensive way of doing things.
And they can only hold a referendum when the UK Parliament gives legislative consent - otherwise it is just a straw poll
If anyone is in the market for a new phone, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The Conservatives need to be very careful, because I think Labour, in spite of their dire position at the moment, could come together very quickly. Especially, if some of the moderates get back on the front bench, as I personally think they will.
Narrow escape there, then.
LGBTTQQIAA+ (at least)
I am perfectly happy with just being G (indeed I refuse to accept any of this rainbow alphabetti-spaghetti nonsense)
That ended on 24th June, defacto, with de jure to follow
I really think Apple have killed the golden goose with the iPhone 7.
Neil Hamilton is on Ch 4 tonight, and not happy...
"But neither of those things were the most amazing part of that Trump event. The most amazing thing was that it took the Republican nominee 29 minutes to deliver those three sentences. The event was slated to start at 10 am eastern. It wasn't until 11 am that it actually began -- with Trump touting his new hotel and proclaiming that it is likely to be one of the best in the world. He then ceded the stage to a parade of decorated military veterans who testified to his toughness, his judgment and his temperament.
Cable networks seemed to not know what to do. All three of them -- MSNBC , Fox News and CNN -- stayed with the generals's testimonials for the better part of 20 minutes. That's a remarkable amount of free cable time to dedicate to a series of surrogates testifying to how great one of the two party nominees is...

More comedy gold.
'The fracture, the disrespect for the business of government, the hatred of the establishment.
People said Apple were mad when they shipped the first iMac without a floppy drive...
They've just been surveying people on whether they use the headphone jack on their laptops. Apparently it didn't occur to them that having proprietary headphones that don't work with anything but your phone might be inconvenient.
Trump is currently doing a camera's only tour of the hotel. No questions taken.

More popcorn please.
My galaxy S5 is in need of an upgrade, and I was thinking of hanging on for the Galaxy S7 Active, though wanting the waterproofing sorted first.
There is only one party that she is going to make headway against.
