That is so self evidently the sensible solution one wonders how our politicians can be so out of step-

I reckon we've FU'd up so completely over the arab world in general that we should just stand aside and let Putin give it his best shot. It's win win. He buggers it up then he is a busted flush; if he clears out ISIS, and Assad (with Putin's help) clears out all of the other jehadists, what's not to like . It's just a shame that Saddam and Gaddafi are dead. The Yanks are not particularly good at stopping their people killing each other.
And the fifth column in the UK don't have an excuse to try and kill us all

Maybe they'll move to Moscow and try to wreak revenge?

    On a chilling note -

this is the 9th mass shooting in 6 1/2 years of Obama: not his fault at all, it's just the stat they put out.

They are all either schools, colleges or universities. The one thing they have in common is they are weapon free zones.

there is no appetite in Congress for changing the gun laws - you can thank the NRA for that.

There does seem to have been a transition with the latest ones for those who do want some change to stop even pretending it is realistic they will achieve anything, to acknowledge there will be no change. And since presumably the collective public don't punish the reluctance to do anything, it would seem this is the way things will be for a long time. Rough politics indeed.

On that depressing note, good night.

The one good thing (?) is that the local police chief refused to name the perpetrator. Unfortunately the media took care of that.

Kudos to Fox News on this one - they acknowledged they had the identty but refused to name him until the other news outlets had done so.

On a good note - Hurricane Joaquin is out in the Atlantic and won't make a US landfall - folks between DC and NY and New England can expect up to 2 feet of rain, and the ground is saturated.

We are expecting less but quite a lot of heavy rain.

Exactly the opposite. This is exactly the fault of Obama and his administration. The anti-gun lobby are directly responsible for most of these shootings.

If you make it very clear that people in certain areas will not - by law - be able to defend themselves then that's where the mass-killer wannabes will always go.

To make theatres, campuses and schools safe from madmen these stupid "gun free zones" need to be abolished and quickly. The NRA are on the side of the good guys.

At this stage, that would be my bet too, now that Walker is out of the picture and given that Kasich did not build on his bounce and is falling back.

I've been quite heavily on Bush for months. He's in for the long game. He must have expected a wide field of what political analysts might call 'nut-jobs' late on a Friday night, but not this many. He'll keep going. I also have a wild flutter on Fiorina - which is looking good.

Leesburg VA had 6-7" yesterday. Here, it's been raining solidly for two days now, but out rain gauge is broken, so I can't give you a precise number. Suffice it to say that the ground is so waterlogged, big trees (pin oaks and white oaks, perhaps 70'+ tall) are beginning to fall over.

The latest polls have Trump still out in front and the biggest gainer this week is Ted Cruz, both are firmly anti immigration, unlike Bush and Rubio and that seems to be important for a GOP base in populist mood

I'm not sure whether I'm more depressed that it's gone up all the way to Five, or that this is now considered a suitable suggestion for an "old" game. Good grief.

Don't think I ever beat Civ (i.e. the original one) on Emperor. I did quite enjoy Civ 2, which ironed out some of the silly things in Civ but thought it was getting a bit complicated and fiddly with the extra features.

Jeb Bush is the right person but in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think his low-key, thoughtful style is what the GOP needs for the general but it's ill-suited for this particular primary season. And he just can't help shooting himself in the foot at key moments. His response today to the latest school shooting ("stuff happens") is a perfect example of this. It also didn't help that it looked like he'd spent the last 24 hours drinking from the firehose.
