Re right wingers vs nasty left wingers.

I can't think of a more evil and pernicious piece of legislation introduced by any government in the last 100 years than section 28.

I can think of far worse, over the course of 100 years.
Would you mind sharing your thoughts, I'm genuinely interested
Inter alia, I'd regard the Trade Union and Labour Relations Acts 1974/1976, the Rent Acts 1965/1977, the Hunting Act 2004, and the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 as being more pernicious.
Any government? Sweden's sterilisation laws in the 1930s.

The Nazi Wannsee conference in 1942 wasn't too pretty either.

In the UK, I might add NI internment to Sean's list. Section 28 was totemic and, in reality, had little effect from 1988 onwards other than it's symbolism.

Mr. Thompson, aye, agree with that (and Mr. Price too). After the attack in Tunisia last year they found some people hiding a day or two later. But better to hide a bit too long than risk yourself.

I wouldn't assume there are only 2 gunmen either - i.e. don't do anything even if and when the second gunman is disabled

AL Jazeera reporting 2 gunmen. 1 dead. The other being searched for, possibly addressed as a policeman.

In a similar vein I'd add the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act 2001 (Part 4) - Indefinite detention of foreign nationals without charge or trial. (https://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/human-rights/countering-terrorism/detention-without-charge)

John, if you're in your room don't answer the door unless to someone who knows your name. Law enforcement would know, gunman dressed as law enforcement wouldn't

From BJO's point of view the best thing to do is to barricade his room and just keep hiding. No point trying to get info as to when "it's over".

Sorry, but I think that is a dumb idea.
Much of the gunfire noise will be from police/security forces. Hopefully, the arrival of helicopters shows help is on its way.

I have no desire to alarm you further, BJO, but when the hotel in Bombay(?) was attacked, terrorists called hotel rooms claiming to be from reception in order to find out where people were hiding. Be very cautious.

British man Alan Callaghan, from Sunderland, tells the BBC by telephone that he heard an attack on a neighbouring hotel. He says guests at the hotel swimming pool heard what they first thought was an engine backfiring, but were then sent to their rooms by hotel staff. From his room he was able to see a man with a pistol outside, but does not know if this was an attacker or a member of the security forces. He and other guests are now taking shelter in the hotel's staff quarters and have been told to wait for the all-clear. Mr Callaghan is on holiday in Tunisia and staying at the Hotel Bellevue in El Kantaoui.

That could still be dodgy - access to Hotel records, etc.
I wouldn't come out until I could speak to someone who was obviously British and not under duress in any way.
  • Pro_RataPro_Rata Posts: 5,354
OK, if all barricaded and not answering to anyone I ask what next as secondary protection? Where in the bathroom? Can John reduce risk from the walls? How not to draw attention? How is the battery life / silence settings on your device? Good luck, John.
  • DavidLDavidL Posts: 54,038
Latest from BBC is that most of the guests in the Hotel Bellevue are in the staff quarters. They are being told to stay there and wait for the all clear. So they haven't got it yet John.

Cooper still doesn't appear to be getting it.

Labour must double the number of BAME MPs, says Yvette Cooper
    *snip*
OTOH she could call for a true meritocracy (which we still don't have in this country) so that the most able people can get on in life, regardless of race, colour, sexuality or any other of the irrelevant ways that the human race divides itself.

Is it bad to want to see Sajid Javid or Priti Patel as the next PM, partly to rub the noses of the Left in their "diversity" bollocks?

Yvette Cooper's call to break the 'final glass ceiling' by electing a female Labour leader and Prime Minister didn't exactly paint them in a good light.
  • Morris_DancerMorris_Dancer Posts: 61,973
Mr. Sandpit, Patel, not Javid. Achieves that aim and gets me a 50/1 winner.

Mr. Owls, got the BBC live updates up and checking Twitter every few minutes. No new info as yet.

Aljazeera reporting that one of the attackers was disguised as a policeman

"One attacker had been killed by police and a search operation was ongoing, with reports that another attacker was involved.
Ongoing exchanges of gunfire had earlier been reported between the attackers and security forces, sources told Al Jazeera.
The attack was on the Imperial Marhaba hotel, local radio said, according to the Reuters news agency. Other reports indicated that two hotels may have been attacked."
