I think Nick Robinson needs to clarify further... if any Labour aide has been stupid enough to mention the specific words Milly and Dowler in his presence then they deserve the book thrown at them.
So no one used the words Milly Downer and moment..I wonder why they came up then.. some sort of magic perhaps.. no one said the words but they seem to have been said..all smoke and mirrors and possible lies to me..
No-one in Labour used the phrase ‘Milly Dowler moment’.
According to the Telegraph version posted above, Labour admit to using the words Milly, Dowler and moment, but have made the claim (backed up by Robinson) that they were not used in that order in a single phrase.
So that's OK then...
All seems a bit like Ed claiming to have repeated his words today, without actually having said the words again
Sounds like an Eric Morecambe/Andre Previn moment!
Summary of the day: Ed Miliband chose to fight publicly a Tory donor over alleged tax evasion in the middle of a big tax evasion scandal, and won!
It might make an effect on the left (SNP, GRN wise), but it surely will make an impression in the media world who until now they have branded him a loser.

Even if they did, Toenails is too weak of a weasel to drop anybody in it. He has been backing up the truck from the moment he tweeted it....yet another example of too many tweets make a !!!

Nick Robinson's blog:
"The Labour leader's aides say that he sees this as another Milly Dowler moment"
Nick Robinson's clarification:
Calm down Twitter. I did not quote anyone re Ed M & Milly Dowler. Said his aides saw this as moment like that ie to stand up to powerful
This appears to be a misunderstanding. No-one in Labour used the phrase ‘Milly Dowler moment’.
Now the Daily Mail is running with:
"Ed Miliband believes his row over 'dodgy' Tory donors avoiding tax is a 'Millie Dowler moment' where he can stand up for the public against the rich and powerful, his aides have revealed."
Presumably all those Labour supporters who told us it was OK for Ed to smear Lord Fink by association will be happy that the Mail is doing the same to Ed, albeit in the Mail's case based on believing what a respected BBC reporter reported.
Oh dear, they're playing by the same rules? What a shame.
We were always in for a very dirty election campaign; even more so now.

No no, he doesn't need to drop anyone in it - he just needs to quote the aide...
So with the headline of Miliband accusing Fink of a U-turn, I think it's safe to conclude that this was definitely the outcome Miliband was hoping for, a manufactured row on his terms. Perhaps he is getting more confident as we get closer to the election and chances of a Tory win remain negligible (even if a Labour win does not automatically become likely, though personally I think it is).
I must say though that unless I have completely misread Miliband's comments earlier today about infant class size limits, he has annoyed me more than he has ever before I think. Breathtakingly cynical stuff was my take when I saw it. But all you have to do is say you will be firm on preserving the 30 limit and the larger problems and reasons behind why pressure is resulting in more and more classes over that limit, and it's not an issue that will cost you, and possibly the contrary unfortunately.
I didn't say Miliband's actions would appeal to his left wing, I said they would appeal to people who would vote Labour anyway.
Granted. I (perhaps wrongly) extrapolated that the group you were referring to would also cover those who are possible Green or SNP defectors. Any reason you think it wouldn't appeal to them?
I just doubt it will be enough to make a difference. Labour is currently running on a "cuddly austerity" platform, and most of the people that have departed heading left seem to have done it because they want an end to austerity. I don't see EdM blowing a few raspberries at fat cats with questionable (but legal) tax arrangements as being enough to get them heading back to Labour.

Quite amusing watching the Tory PBers getting in a lather about the upcoming "corker" of a poll only to find it has Labour ahead on 36%. Funny how now they seem to want to talk about something else (in fact anything else, except perhaps Lord Fink and HSBC!).

Dave has the majority of the right wing press on his side, business leaders, and all kinds of figures endorsing him. Ed is squeaky clean compared to Cameron me Finks
You need to take the blinkers off John.
Hodge, Ed, Lord Paul, even Brown are all up to their necks in it. This is a can of worms that Ed has opened and now he can't close the lid, he will find himself seriously regretting it.
@RobD Apparently the journalists put out the data to specifically discomfort Dave, and aid ED. The fact that said data was released worldwide and has caused a stir in several other countries would appear to have been merely a covering ploy. I'm sure his business is as efficient as possible. Given the scrutiny it would get, I'd imagine it's all very legal too, however upsetting you find it.
He's not the one riding the white charger of righteousness on the topic, and opening himself up to accusations of hypocrisy, is he.
Labour think it is a good day when their leader smears someone without a shred of evidence produced and hide the allegations under the protection of the HOC..Shameful...

I am sure the Guardian / BBC have plenty more helpful stuff ready when we get closer to election time. Even on the swiss tax dodging, 1100+ high value individuals on the list, we have only seen a few names released so far....
That'll be the same Guardian that are based in the Cayman Islands, the ones who rely on hedge funds to keep afloat. And the same BBC that encouraged their stars and employees to be self employed to avoid the poor old BBC having to pay NI etc
It will get dirty but I have a feeling that this time the unbelievably hypocritical Left will come unstuck.
I am afraid I don't agree. Across the media industry, they are up to their necks in "tax efficiency planning", so it is like phone hacking, nobody is going to rock the boat.
Murdoch has an sharp axe to grind with Ed, I find it difficult to believe he will pass up an opportunity to make life difficult for him. To begin with get Hodge and Stemcor's arrangements into the spotlight.
Murdoch doesnt dodge tax then?
I'm sure his business is as efficient as possible. Given the scrutiny it would get, I'd imagine it's all very legal too, however upsetting you find it.
He's not the one riding the white charger of righteousness on the topic, and opening himself up to accusations of hypocrisy, is he.
And Ipsos Mori came out showing Labour's share remaining more than solid.
The Tories are damaged.
A good day all round for Ed.
After all the speculation last night regarding a corker of a poll been bad for Labour. Then a threat of libel action.
It seems Labour have come out on top on both counts.
In boxing terms a technical knockout.
It's all shadow boxing. The economy hasn't stepped in the ring yet.
And Labour are going to need a cuts man in their corner when it does....

Quite amusing watching the Tory PBers getting in a lather about the upcoming "corker" of a poll only to find it has Labour ahead on 36%. Funny how now they seem to want to talk about something else (in fact anything else, except perhaps Lord Fink and HSBC!).
I think Tory strategists will be reasonable calm with these figures. Three months out and the opposition can only pull a point or two ahead.

what I want to know is why arent the tories counterattacking Labour on this, goodness knows there is enough panes of glass in their glasshouse to break. Where is Cameron, Where is Osborne, wheres the conservatives attack dogs, where is the tories equivalent to John Reid and Peter Mandleson. I'm sure there's plenty of tax avoidance going on in the Labour camp. The Tories are c##p are attacking Labour in these kind of battles.
Said it before, they just don't have anybody who is able to articulate an attack clearly and concisely and do so without any fear of sounding like a big loud mouth gobs##te. They are very good at getting their attack stories planted in friendly newspapers, but getting on BBC / Sky and ripping the opposition a new one, utter s##t. Whenever they do send people out they get bogged down in either complex explanations, don't repeat the attack line enough or even just too nice.
If the boot had been on the other foot, Bad Al would have ripped the Tories a new one over Stafford, Rotherham, etc....You would not have been able to turn your tv on without some loud mouth Labour MP screaming about Tory failures over these things, all summed up with a concise attack line that they repeat 1000 times.. Think how they did it over phone hacking.
Instead Cameron actually ends up kinda of apologizing for the establishment more often than not.
The problem for the Tories that the broadcasters won't work with them to smear Labour. For Labour, it is easier....... But Tories are too gentlemanly anyway to even think of smearing someone....
This Nick Robinson/Milly Dowler thing is interesting...

Labour think it is a good day when their leader smears someone without a shred of evidence produced and hide the allegations under the protection of the HOC..Shameful...
If it helps them win the election, of course they would think it a good day. It is practically in the operating manual for political parties that while you may have to compromise, u-turn or even, on rare occasions, outright mislead in order to gain power, it will all be for the best so long as your side wins, even if you don't have any genuine ideological basis for assuming superior morality anymore.

The general rule that incumbents tend to put on a few points in the actual campaign. I'm not predicting, just trying to think what Tory HQ might be thinking. And that is that they'll be fairly confident they can pull this deficit back in the actual campaign. They still have the electoral maths to deal with of course.

It's never a good idea to just look at one poll in isolation. Labour do hit 36% occasionally, but it's not the figure that they're averaging.
A simple average of six polls this week puts Labour 0.3% ahead of the Conservatives (or 0.6% if you include the polls from last weekend.)
What may be of concern to the Conservatives is to see UKIP fall to 9% in MORI, but their own share only to rise to 34%. One would expect a Conservative share of 37% or so, with UKIP so low. As against that, MORI's unweighted sample seems to have been a very left-wing one (Con and UKIP on just 41% combined, Labour, Green, and Nationalist on 52%) which was only partly offset by the turnout filter.
Mr Miliband reacted to Lord Fink's comments by saying: "I think this is a defining moment in David Cameron's leadership of the Conservative Party because it is now revealed that he appointed a treasurer of the Conservative Party who says everyone engages in tax avoidance. I don't think that is the view of most people,

I can see this. A few points is pretty conceivable. they'll be fairly confident they can pull this deficit back in the actual campaign.
This is the bit I just cannot see the reasoning behind. Either they are great at bluffing or I'm a fool (possibly both), as I cannot see where more than 'a few points' is going to come from and even with optimistic views of how big a lead is needed in England and other possibilities, they need more than a few.

If experience with Ed has told us anything, it is that what appears to be a short term Labour win will be way more complex than that.
I personally think that the last couple of days have showcased Unedifying Ed. A man who would be a very troubling Prime Minister. A man who will say anything, do anything, however inappropriate, to grab the keys to 10 Downing Street.

Ed Miliband will never be Prime Minister. At least, not until Sheffield Wednesday have won back-to-back Champions Leagues...
I get childcare vouchers, paid for by a deduction from my salary before it's taxed. This is not a trivial matter of avoiding duty on a bottle of gin, this is thousands of pounds. It is not like a pension, which I'd say is deferred taxation, not avoided taxation.

Tax avoidance is not the same as legitimate tax planning. Legitimate tax planning involves using tax reliefs for the purpose for which they were intended. For example, claiming tax relief on capital investment, saving in a tax-exempt ISA or saving for retirement by making contributions to a pension scheme are all legitimate forms of tax planning

@Anorak In your case, it would appear you are getting government sanctioned tax relief. There are others who decide to create such relief themselves. I know it is hard to distinguish between the two for some, but it is not all that difficult really.

Setting up a family trust (per Fisk) is sactioned. 'Government sanctioned' is the same as 'legal', to me at least.
It's not that difficult really, and your attempt at sophistry isn't necessary.
And Ipsos Mori came out showing Labour's share remaining more than solid.
The Tories are damaged.
A good day all round for Ed.
And what reason, besides the ineptitude of Ed Miliband, is there for believing the Tories can not only overcome that but gain a significant points lead, which is what they need to have even a chance of being the largest party? Even Ed M ain't that inept.
The general rule that incumbents tend to put on a few points in the actual campaign.
A "few points" would win the election for the Conservatives, at least enabling them to come first in terms of seats. I agree with antifrank that it's unlikely they can form a government without at least 295 seats. They won 306 in 2010, they can expect to gain 10 or so from the Lib Dems, so they need to keep losses to Labour and UKIP to no more than 20.
Oh dear! Fink admits everything. It was quite inevitable. Vanilla avoidance indeed. If the Mail and The Times can humiliate Jimmy Carr and Gary Barlow they can do the same to Cameron's advisers. It's time for Ed to let them have both barrels. Vanilla barrels of course....
Roger to be fair to Jimmy Carr he took a lot of stick on 8 out of 10 cats on channel 4 week in week out.
Explain how negative inflation over the next few months on the back of falling oil prices is a bad thing.
The floor is yours BJO.
One reason is the effect on debtors. Prices and perhaps incomes may fall, but debts do not. If you are a business with falling revenue, or a household with a declining income, debt payments become more of a burden.
Governments can be caught in the same trap, because if prices and incomes fall, so does tax revenue.
And to state the obvious, there is an awful lot of debt floating around - money owed by governments, households and banks. Deflation could aggravate that problem.
Spending also delayed leading to not easy to get out of
Another issue is the effectiveness of central bank policy at a time of economic weakness. The key point here is the level of central bank' real interest rates
If deflation sets in, it could hurt retailers' prospects There have been many episodes in the past when real rates have been below zero. That is impossible to do when there's deflation, as you can't get interest rates much below zero. So it makes it much harder for the central bank to do anything to stimulate a flagging economy.
Then there is the incentive to delay spending that can come with deflation. If something will be cheaper next year, some people might delay buying it.
York City..And as I started my working life as a coal miner It must be a unique stance..Having lived most of my formative years under a Labour dominated regime I decided there was only one way out of the dreadful depression they brought to my home town .. Leave..and never vote for them ever.

Labour are playing the Dirty Joker card, as they're a bit screwed on policy.
What is you GE2015 forecast mine is EICIPM
We know, since you tell us every single day, normally after working up a sweat over Baxter. Retirement must be terribly dull.
What do you think will be GE2015 result?
I think that if EICIPM doesn't come off, you're going to lose a shedload of money.
Mr Miliband reacted to Lord Fink's comments by saying: "I think this is a defining moment in David Cameron's leadership of the Conservative Party because it is now revealed that he appointed a treasurer of the Conservative Party who says everyone engages in tax avoidance. I don't think that is the view of most people,
That would explain the empty duty free shops at Heathrow then, and the billions not invested in Isas.....
Pathetic , same old parrot quote from the Tories , LOL only an imbecile would equate the two.
It might be worth pointing out how much of the tax code and how little Labour did to cut out the loopholes... in fact I remember Gordon introducing silly little tax relief schemes at every budget.

Why arent you worried
And whats your GE2015 forecast mine is EICIPM
Nonsense - prices are falling releasing more money to be spent in the Uk economy rather than be exported to Saudi. Nothing at all to do with weak demand - these falling prices are like a tax cut (perhaps why you dislike them).
More disposable income will be a welcome boost to the economy.
My GE forecast ? Continuity coalition with 20 less Lib Dems.

Comments
I think Nick Robinson needs to clarify further... if any Labour aide has been stupid enough to mention the specific words Milly and Dowler in his presence then they deserve the book thrown at them.
We were always in for a very dirty election campaign; even more so now.
It will get dirty but I have a feeling that this time the unbelievably hypocritical Left will come unstuck.

From Wikipedia: "Robinson was interested in politics from a young age, and went on to study a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree at Oxford University, where he was also President of the Oxford University Conservative Association." & "His history of Conservative affiliation has been controversial, particularly when allegations of bias were made during his coverage of the 2010 general election."
The BBC aren't going to dob themselves in are they, and the likes of the Telegraph are owned by the Barclays Brothers who live in a tax haven.
Ed is squeaky clean compared to Cameron me Finks
With all this , the Tory denizens of this august blog seem to be of the opinion he is being victimized and let down by the a few sections of the media with an organized conspiracy......
Gord bless your little cotton socks.

Hodge, Ed, Lord Paul, even Brown are all up to their necks in it. This is a can of worms that Ed has opened and now he can't close the lid, he will find himself seriously regretting it.
Apparently the journalists put out the data to specifically discomfort Dave, and aid ED.
The fact that said data was released worldwide and has caused a stir in several other countries would appear to have been merely a covering ploy.
Feel free to wade through the back catalogue for further examples.
It has received more than £25 million from the government, and another £4.25 million has just been agreed.

Worth a read, some rather troubling accusations in the article.
He's not the one riding the white charger of righteousness on the topic, and opening himself up to accusations of hypocrisy, is he.
And Labour are going to need a cuts man in their corner when it does....
I think avoidance schemes rob the taxpayer and public services.
I think Dave is up to his neck when he is hoping Fink threatening to sue then dipping out will rescue him on this issue.
What is your forecast for GE2015.
Mine is EICIPM
They might be a bit like Henry Cooper in that regard .
They will be hoping that their opponent, does not get their manager to cut the gloves , to give them time to recover.
Deflation before the election Me thinks.

I personally think that the last couple of days have showcased Unedifying Ed. A man who would be a very troubling Prime Minister. A man who will say anything, do anything, however inappropriate, to grab the keys to 10 Downing Street.
And there will be splashback.
Economy heading for deflation
Immigration up
NHS in a terrible state after top down reorganisation.
More people needing foodbanks than since the 1930s
Cuts men all over the Tory corner
I think a points victory resulting in EICIPM wll be the GE2015 result
What do you forecast?
I get childcare vouchers, paid for by a deduction from my salary before it's taxed. This is not a trivial matter of avoiding duty on a bottle of gin, this is thousands of pounds. It is not like a pension, which I'd say is deferred taxation, not avoided taxation.
Is that wrong? Is it moral? Weirdly my tax-avoiding behaviour is encouraged (would you believe!) by the government.
The floor is yours BJO.
Tax avoidance is not the same as legitimate tax planning. Legitimate tax planning involves
using tax reliefs for the purpose for which they were intended. For example, claiming
tax relief on capital investment, saving in a tax-exempt ISA or saving for retirement by
making contributions to a pension scheme are all legitimate forms of tax planning
