UKIP leader Nigel Farage has been selected by party officials to stand in the 2015 general election for South Thanet.

    First with Nigel. ;)

    17. I think Hopi makes quite a bit of sense

It is not that it is wrong to oppose Western action. The starting tenets – a humility in foreign affairs, an acceptance of the importance of partnership, a preference for peaceful means over military, a recognition of the limits of Western influence are all valuable qualities.

The problem is that it is wrong to assume Western action is the only significant wellspring of negative consequences.....Intervention is not always right. But because others will still intervene whatever the UK and the US does, dogmatic non-intervention contains its own contradiction

Although like most I waver on when intervention might be acceptable, and when pressed would probably stick my head in the sand whether it is the right option or not.

    24. Cheery.

    9. I'm surprised Cameron has the guts to kick anybody anywhere. As boring as the dispute that is the excuse on this action against Bercow may seem, he may even be right. For once.

    19. On a night when Liverpool were thrashed along with Darling, that one did cheer me up last night.

    6. Labour do seem to be going from strength to strength. I don't think they deserve it, I'm not convinced that Labour have managed to get their messages across while the Tories went on holiday, but something has to explain their increased confidence and improved position.

Out canvassing on the mean streets of Dundee again tonight for BT. Actually they weren't that mean, semi detached housing with small neat gardens and reasonable quality cars on the driveway including the odd Beemer.

But they were strongly Yes. Again. I would say at least 65%. Frankly No should be doing better in areas like this, people who actually have something to lose in the brave new Scotland.

No one was very interested in the debate last night.

I am getting so concerned about this that I am actually going to listen (and support, sob) to Gordon Brown tomorrow. Without any rotten eggs. It is getting that serious.

"Roger, your comment about Socrates was not acceptable, no more future repeats of this"

Ponder this. Whenever there is a sexual outrage involving an ethnic minority we have screeds of indignation from Socrates and others and the thoughts of Enoch from Isam.

Most of the interesting posters just slip away and leave this prurient (borderline) racism to the usual suspects.

Being dark or Asian or Black or Irish doesn't make you a rapist and those trying to make a connection in order to cash in on their prejudices just leave me cold.

"I'd hope everyone who is horrified and stunned by today's report would back the police investigating all claims of abuse, whether it points to Muslims, the Catholic Church / CofE and associated organisations, the BBC, politicians, celebrities, or any one of us."

Agreed but the big lesson from today's report is that one can't rely on the police to investigate anything unless it suits them, which is a bit of a bugger.

''Most of the interesting posters just slip away and leave this prurient (borderline) racism to the usual suspects.''

This is not a failure of any community in Britain. It is the massive and systemic failure of the authorities to apply the laws of Britain.

We have to ask ourselves why the laws of Britain were ignored over many years and in so many, many cases by Rotherham and others.

The answer, I'm afraid, is clear and obvious and highlighted by the report.

I see reports that Farage hopes to be UKIP's first MP, but surely that is not correct. He hopes to be one of their MPs, and whether Thanet declares his seat first or not would not matter to him.

The Tories already working on their strategy for the seat, the expected Vote Farage get Ed

The real concern down there is a Labour win. Labour have always been the second party in South Thanet and I think that's true today," he said.

"So no more concerned about Nigel than we would be about any other UKIP candidate standing there.

Yesterday one of Miliband's Shadow Team claims more laws are needed to protect women.

Today the newly appointed Shadow Minister and her leader both appear to be silent as it becomes clearer that existing laws are not enforced.

  • Roger, I was away having dinner and missed the exchange. But this is a community of Scotnats, Unionists, Lab, Lib, Tory, UKIP and None of the above and many other friends to boot! We will all have perspective on these items. The facts of the case in Rotheram, or elsewhere speak for themselves and all I will say is that anyone who ignores such activity, or tries to back away in fear of "Community Cohesion" really misses the point. There really should be a meeting of minds here!

    1. If Con/Lab are neck and neck Cameron will try and sit in Number 10 as long as possible. As is his prerogative. However, Boris will be lurking with the theme tune from Jaws playing in the background.

    2. Still think UKIP will fail to win seat in 2015 #FPTP

    3. At the moment we laugh with Boris, but it's a fine line between laughing with and laughing at...

    4. ?

    5. With UKIP starting so far behind I think Farage will fail in Thanet.

    6. Labour has gone up by around 1-2% this summer, so it has been a success.

    7. Ed The Younger is the ultimate EU wonk. He would rather lose the election than risk the UK leaving the EU on his watch, IMO.

    8. Will they be able to drink champagne at this years Tory Ball?

    9. Cameron and Bercow hate each others guts!

    10. "Dirty Money" funds all the parties. However, the public seem to prefer this than the other option of having to fund the parties through taxation.

    11. And here was me thinking Scotland was about to sling it's hook...

    12. Darling could have been Labour's John Major if he'd had the guts to get rid of Brown in May 2009.

    13. Zzzzzzzzz....

    14. I'm hoping for a good nights sleep, so think I'll pass on this link, thanks.

    15. Labour despise's it's own voters about as much as the Tories despise their's...

    16. Sounds grim.

    17. Sounds like an coalition of fruitcakes?

    18. WWIII here we come.

    19. Gnones are truly awful, horrible things!

    20. Too many tweets.... However it made me laugh.

    21. They have neo-nazi's in Sweden? Who knew!

    22. Sorry seems to be the hardest word.

    23. WOW!

    24. Sounds like a breakfast cereal.

Any time something horrible happens that truly indicts the left-wing world view, they start abusing others until the atmosphere is so bad that we're not allowed to discuss the something horrible any more. They thus successfully stifle the debate.

If I get abusive over the issue the next time a conservative policy looks bad, will you then ban talk of that policy?

For a slight change of tone (and it's Nighthawks, so it can hardly be off-topic):

Today's news that Boris is standing at GE2015 somewhere in the south is great news for me, as it was reported that he was looking at South Cambridgeshire, where I live. Having just got rid of Lansley (yay!), I want a Conservative candidate I could consider voting for.

Boris was not in that category, at least whilst he remains London mayor.

I like very much SO's contributions; always a considered poster, despite the fact that he refused to acknowledge that all left wing people think in exactly the same way and can be considered as one.

But to leave an internet chatroom for whatever reason tells me a couple of things:

    1. perspective has been lost; it's hardly the Phillippics here; no one cares what we write.
    2. sadly no one will pause to let it affect them profoundly.
    3. to leave now, after interacting with people with whom you have previously engaged in robust debate has an element of flounce/losing the argument about it.
    4. Roger I can live without.

    4 nil.

Sporting Index still has Man U scoring more points and thus above Liverpool in the PL this season?
Betvictor still has Man U as evens not to be top 4 this season. I reckon that's decent value but DYOR.

I know it's pushing it too far but is there a market for Man U to be relegated?
  • SO - you cannot leave PB with Spurs TOTL..... it don't come around that that much...

The ones who read it online and comment about it certainly do. One of my favourite comments was how he is secretly a LD. I've heard that about Clarke a lot, but not as much with Cameron. They detest him. Granted, a lot of those commenter's are UKIPers wh oyou'd expect to hate Cameron.

Looks very much like a MU XI which would be rarely fielded in Premiership matches, but what is the point of the League Cup other than to provide some amusement to to non Man U followers.

I see reports that Farage hopes to be UKIP's first MP, but surely that is not correct. He hopes to be one of their MPs, and whether Thanet declares his seat first or not would not matter to him.

In any case, he's too late, wasn't Bob Spink (briefly) a UKIP MP in 2008? Farage can of course still become the first person elected as a UKIP MP.

He was indeed; in April 2008 he defected from the Tories to UKIP, becoming that party's first and only MP. In November 2008 he was redesignated as an Independent, on the grounds that UKIP had no 'whip' (How does Caroline Lucas manage?)
At the 2010 General Election in which he stood as an Independent he made it clear he was supporting UKIP and UKIP supported his election in which he gained 27% of the vote.
However, while a "UKIP MP" he found himself at odds with his new-found colleagues over the issue of whether or not to extend the amount of time a suspect can be detained without charge from 28 to 42 days. He voted for the bill, but UKIP opposed it.

I could recall a lot of that but thanks to Wikipedia for the detail

Tory acquaintances in Castle Point initially thought highly of him but very rapidly became disenchanted. There were all sorts of shenanigans; marital and religious as well as political!

The best odds currently available on a Spurs top 4 finish is 3/1 with Spreadex. My guess is that they'll finish either 4th or 5th, so this looks like fair value.
