So sorry to hear about Basil. It can't have been for want of fitness.

    When is the funeral?

Basil, unlike a Tory polling lead is fit and well. Please don't tell me I missed a PB Hodgegasm. How many polls were there in the crossover? I was wondering why the shares in tissues had rocketed in early trading this morning.

1 Ashcroft poll, looked methodologically sound, however had a smallish effective (~500ish) sample size. The rest of the polls that day had a 2 pt Labour lead.

It was a two point lead, 'pouter.

Not even Basil could survive that.

It was like a silver bullet to the heart.

This Belgian team is slightly less than the sum of its parts. Which is just as well for everyone else. They have some outstanding players.

Jesus wept, I can see the Lambert and Butler Election Calculator (Pony Juice ramifications) giving the chance of a Tory majority next week to be at least 5491%.

    Belgium
    Netherlands
    Germany
    Columbia

in a lucky 15 might be worth a shot.

USA vs Belgium definitely the best game of the World Cup so far, those two teams gave it their all. The Belgians ran out of legs on that pitch rather than face the US goalie Tim Howard in a penalty shoot out #wall. :)

Do non-Labour people feel any concern about this sort of thing?

    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/jul/01/-sp-tory-summer-party-drew-super-rich-supporters-with-total-wealth-of-11bn

I don't personally think much can be done about donations, but I'd like to see much tighter spending limits, to limit the perceived need on all sides to attract donors of all kinds.

What a hilarious article - absolutely classic Guardian stuff, in full Daily Mail-like innuendo style.

Does Nick Palmer ex-MP really take it seriously? He seriously thinks 450 people have got some kind of special and dodgy influence as a result of attending a dinner?

There is, however, one serious point - I believe it is true that Ed Miliband's anti-business, anti-prosperity, anti-jobs agenda is leading to a big increase in donations to the Conservatives, and that therefore the party goes into the election period in very good financial shape.

Could well have been 5-2 to Belgium. Klinsman would have put away the USA chances.

Richard, investment follows the talent who wants to support and expand the growth of the UK economy. Has Len McClusky set out his shopping list yet for the Labour party GE manifesto?

    Interesting case:

"Former New York City police officer Gilberto Valle, dubbed by local media as the “Cannibal Cop,” and his mother Elizabeth Valle leave the US District Court for the Southern District of New York in Lower Manhattan yesterday. US District Judge Paul Gardephe in Manhattan threw out the conviction of Valle, 30, for plotting to kidnap, kill and cook women after federal public defenders argued that the US Constitution grants people the right to fantasise, free from government interference."

I think it would be interesting to see a list of all the contributers to the Conservative party, including all those who contribute via third parties like the river companies of old repute.

Or the hedge funds and financial institutions, who, of course, donate for the benefits of democracy and never for any advantage. Funnily enough, the donations sometimes never seem to show up in the accounts of either of the companies concerned or the Conservative party accounts.

Ah well, it must be fine to have friends in HMRC.

The weird thing is ISIS is good for el yanks up to a point. A unified Iraq with Maliki in charge created a supply line from Iran to Assad so a Sunni revolt breaks that line (same way the coup in Kiev would have weakened Russian support for Assad via Crimea if Putin hadn't quickly nabbed it).

So on the one hand you could see why the US might want to drag their feet over helping the Maliki government. On the other you have people like McCain wanting to make hay blaming Obamassiah for "losing Iraq" possibly pushing him into doing more which could eventually lead to Russian, Iranian and US planes all bombing the Isis bods to help the Shia govt the US want toppled.

Which would be a tad ironic.

So whatever happens i think this latest chapter will raise T.W.A.T to a whole new level of mental.

    Kellner on Indyref polls:

A number of recent polls have produced widely-reported stories that the contest is close. They are wrong. It isn’t. The No campaign is well ahead. Its lead has held up for some months. Unless things change markedly in the next eleven weeks, Scotland will vote to remain in the United Kingdom, and by a decisive enough margin to settle the matter for many years to come.

Kelly's "I''m bigger than this" posturing (previously seen here) is hardly likely to get a response, is it? You'd have thought with victory assured, Nats would have become serene, not splenetic.......but then again they are dealing in beautiful "truth" and not ugly facts....
