So Burnham is about to be crowned Labour leader by the vast majority of Labour MPs, thus ensuring he faces no contest. He will become the first PM since Gordon Brown to get the job without a leadership contest of any kind against rival candidates or first winning a general election, nor even rivals openly collecting nominations as Rishi did for a few days in later 2022 when Boris and Mordaunt were collecting signatures.
It comes as a dramatic new PLMR poll has a post Starmer Labour surging to take first place on seats again with 217 MPs projected and Burnham also ironically helping save the Tories with 151 Conservative MPs projected, just ahead of Reform on 127 MPs forecast after tactical voting is factored in
The problem with UK mayors compared to abroad, in UK they are mostly just glorified car park attendants, central government, the treasury, take more control of actual power all the time - the new Defence Investment Plan a perfect example. Mayors certainly spend and waste money - and Burnham has a back catalogue of mistakes, bad decisions and waste to be thrown at him. But Mayors never properly prove they generate additional money or get value for it like government ministers and PMs constantly have to. The difference between a mayor and being in a proper job in government, is chalk and cheese.
The point I’m getting at here, at no time has Burnham ever been more popular than Starmer for PM - because how do you poll such a thing accurately when one is actually doing a proper job, the other a glorified car park attendant tucked away in a region or city most friendly to the party, spending other people’s money. Yet WOTN (the wanker from the north - Wankashire in fact, not an intelligent part of the north) his inane supporters were naff enough to quote such polling. No I’ll go much further than that, it’s the fact the whole Labour movement has bought into idea Burnhams government will be more popular with the electorate than Starmer’s. But here’s the bottom line - based on what? It’s not evidence based. It’s the most flawed understanding as you scratch beneath its surface.
This is how we politics geeks - and very soon the whole rest of the nation - actually know Andy Burnham: it’s from the weirdo’s and no hopers he surrounds himself with - Useless Lucy, Lawbreaker Louise, Fruit Cake Clive Lewis, Milliband, Rayner, Red Ann Midgley. Forget my references to “Manc Mafia” - UK’s about to be governed by THE MUNSTERS.
I have already called it correctly - this is exactly what is about to happen: it will soon be viewed as a horror show, because Team Burnham are just weird people and clueless second rate politicians. And - just like the US Democrats, who MUST shoulder the main responsibility for inflicting Trump 2.0 on the world becuase they also coronated without a proper test - Labour will massively regret not having a contest before handing over such massive power to a weird unlikeable clique in their party.
A police training issue, and the problem with moral panics rather than thinking tings through.
They have crushed another legal e-cycle (technically EAPC - Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle). This one was a Tern HSD, which was worth about £5.5k and are one of the best known brands in the UK. It had been funded by Birmingham Council to be part of a "hire for a month to try it out" scheme:
However, the cycle was seized by West Midlands Police on New Street, in Birmingham city centre, and wrongly identified as what in law is an electric motorcycle, for which riders need a license and insurance. The rider was offered a Fixed Penalty Notice of £300 and six points on their license, or a court hearing.
Body-worn camera footage from the police encounter with the rider, released by police and seen by Cycling Electric, shows an officer cranking the e-bike’s pedal with one hand, while the rear wheel is off the ground, thus removing any friction with a surface – and the speedometer registering what looks like 60km/h. The rider can be heard saying the motor wasn’t switched on at the time.
If there is a case going to court, why have the police destroyed the evidence?
The standard procedure aiui is that it is crushed after 2 weeks, and to get it reversed that quickly requires heavy intervention at senior level in a matter of days. It can be done, but would need perhaps MPs and specialist charities to weigh in, as the police will play a straight bat and hope you go away. I think the police see this as a numbers game, driven by an inchoate media panic - especially caused by use of the undefined, nebulous term "e-bike".
So this action is about recovering unlawfully imposed losses after the fact, and would not be started until the EAPC had been crushed. It is as if the police had seized your car unlawfully and crushed it anyway.
If it goes to court it should be evidence and nothing should be crushed until a guilty verdict is rendered.
We're about to get our first Cambridge-educated PM since Stanley Baldwin (b. 1867) kissed the hand of George V (b. 1865) a mere 91 years ago. Fen Poly's dark night of the soul is over at last. Well done, you chaps.

The rider declined the fixed penalty so I'd have thought there would have to be some kind of court case regarding the original offence?
Without the bike there's no way of determining if it has been modified or not.
This is presumably separate from recovering any losses.

They should have had a contest but it does look like Burnham, like Trump, is electable like him or not
Have you not been paying attention? Burnham would never have survived a proper contest. All the WOTN has shown his 322 nominees so far are some bizarre: love the north hate the south gimmicks and about a billion policy flip flops - often just like someone in the next room saying: what you just promised, we need to disown it immediately. The 322 are just guessing. They are lost.
Everytime Burnham stood for Labour leadership he was exposed as a dull policy vacuum who didn’t know what he stood for let alone could give a political party a soul, so rightly came nowhere. He was at home in the Corbyn Shadow Cabinet he wouldn’t resign from, when every sane politician in Labour already had resigned. A Tax and Spender, more than happy to take on the markets by borrowing money in order to fund pet schemes and fallacies. Surely we know exactly what is going to happen just by looking at the wacky and useless politicians in the WOTNs inner circle?
Labours best hope, their only hope, going into 2029 election, was to go in with some credibility on the economy, cost of living and growth, delivering public services - to flag how dangerous radicalism and promise of change the other parties called for would wreck the hard won financial stability and direction of travel. Labour have lost that option now coronating this weird whacky radical Burnham government. They are certain to wreck the economy and so achieve nothing - certainly not improve the popularity of their party.

Baldwin wasn’t a great PM, but it will be hard to be worse than the Oxford contingent that we have suffered recently.

As if any of that would have happened if it was a contested election. Remember that every recent party election where members got a say has resulted in them voting for the candidate willing to give the members the most sweeties/ unicorns.
So the idea that any election would have got you what you want is completely for the birds

This is something that was getting reported by a few here regularly but not making the mainstream news, but now seems to be more regularly on mainstream news too.
I wonder if they've picked it up from here, or if we're potentially approaching some sort of culmination?
That's an impressively detailed report from the BBC. I suspect it's a matter of them taking time to do some extra investigation, rather than taking the reports from Ukraine of the attacks at face value, which explains the delay.
I haven't seen much in the way of reports of food shortages in Crimea yet. There's undoubtedly a fuel supply crisis, but as long as they can keep the supermarket shelves stocked with food it's not yet becoming a more general crisis.

Much as I would like one I would assume the point is that it forces resources from Russia onto Crimea so it can lessen the pressure elsewhere (including in the north), as even though Russia would know that is the plan they simply cannot afford to let Crimea become truly cut off so either massively increase manpower and resources - which comes with costs even when it is possible - or accept a weakness elsewhere to keep the main prize.

Welcome back, Little Miss Angry
Am I opinionated?
Do I have opinions? 😆
As you know, the predominantly male PB is always very welcoming to women and not at all patronising or misogynistic.
This is something that was getting reported by a few here regularly but not making the mainstream news, but now seems to be more regularly on mainstream news too.

What resources into Crimea? No evidence that fuel is getting through in any meaningful way. Plus the power grid is being systematically trashed. With no power, there is no water. It is a very efficient medieval siege being inflicted on Crimea. Russia appears to have no answers.
They make no sense to me. If you aim right and hit well it won't matter if they guess the right way, and with a stutter run half the time it doesn't cause the keeper to guess wrong and you have only succeeded in halving your run up.
They must practice penalties, why don't coaches tell them to stop?
And don't tell me the players won't listen, they listen to every other coaching style of play they are told.

Wasn't Marvin the paranoid android a car park attendant?
He really didn't get hold of that at all! Embarrassing, but been there. Absolute bs being spouted about the time delay by ITV commentators, both keeper and striker are waiting it doesn't disadvantage either, 3 minute wait to take a penalty is normal in field hockey.

I wonder if they've picked it up from here, or if we're potentially approaching some sort of culmination?
Much as I would like one I would assume the point is that it forces resources from Russia onto Crimea so it can lessen the pressure elsewhere (including in the north), as even though Russia would know that is the plan they simply cannot afford to let Crimea become truly cut off so either massively increase manpower and resources - which comes with costs even when it is possible - or accept a weakness elsewhere to keep the main prize.
What resources into Crimea? No evidence that fuel is getting through in any meaningful way. Plus the power grid is being systematically trashed. With no power, there is no water. It is a very efficient medieval siege being inflicted on Crimea. Russia appears to have no answers.
Well, perhaps you could argue anti-drone resources, such as they are, might be redeployed to try to protect supplies.
For example, there were a few videos of Ukrainian drones ploughing into "anti-drone mobile fire groups" (a vehicle with some soldiers and a machine gun on the back) which were being deployed to the land route into Crimea across southern Ukraine, in an attempt to defend trucks from Ukrainian drones.
Also, at least one group of Russian tankers hit in the Sea of Azov was said to be in a convoy, and video shows a Ukrainian sea drone* being shot at as it approaches a tanker - so presumably Russia is using a bunch of assets to try and protect these tankers (with little success).
* It's quite something of Ukrainian drones are able to operate with success in the Sea of Azov, although they video might have been from elsewhere.

Point of Pedantry.
Little Miss Angry does not exist.
We need a different one.
That’s right. I’m not angry. I’m finding Labour dumping Starmer and Reeves for Burnham and his weird useless clique more hysterically funny the closer we get to coronation day 🎉🍾
There’s no changing the mind for Labour now. It’s actually happening. 😃

Well, no one has to be offered the day off for any bank holiday after all (if you give proper days off elsewhere), so it sounds like a fair trade to me.
This is something that was getting reported by a few here regularly but not making the mainstream news, but now seems to be more regularly on mainstream news too.

I meant military resources, in order to enable to break the attempt at siege. Hopefully it would take a lot of diversion elsewhere to counter the current bombardments.
I remember Piers with affection from his time as a Maida Vale squatters' leader. Anyone who can lead squatters has all the guile and fortitude necessary for a successful politician.
(The reason for the squats was that half of north London had been CPO'd by the DoT for an inner-city motorway which, thankfully, never came to pass.)

I still think it's hilarious that the Tories have spent their entire existence as a political party warning of the danger of poor people voting for the government to give them other people's money and then George Osborne implements the pension triple lock to do exactly that, but the pensioners that benefit are now mostly voting for a party that better expresses their visceral hatred for the young.

If we still had TV closedowns accompanied by the National Anthem, a graph of opinion vs age like that could be shown every night. Possibly with a Union Flag backdrop, possibly not. It is so emblematic of the state of the nation.
I wonder how many different questions you could ask that got a set of responses like that?

Gladstone also had a double first in Classics and Maths from Oxford and was one of our cleverest PMs with a vast library, Burnham a 2.1 in English from Cambridge. Both effectively professional politicians though, Gladstone first elected as an MP at 23 and Burnham first entering the Commons at 31

Just shows how culturally influential it is that its catchphrases land with the public and stick.
Giant Haystacks wrestled for their one time rivals, WCW
A few of our wrestlers have been successes over there.
I’m more AEW than WWE these days. Tony Khan is a great guy.
I first heard the term 'open a can of whoop ass' when I watched There's Something About Mary.
My friends thought I was going to die in the cinema, I kept on laughing so much.
Dodgeball, Intolerable Cruelty, Casino Royale, and The Avengers have only elicited such a strong reaction.
Casino Royale was the worst, the whole cinema looked at me after I couldn't stop laughing.
The Niven one is a joy.
The Herb Alpert score is perfect. The End.
I’ve always loved Herb Alpert.
My Mom used to have some of his LPs and I played them as a kid.
Never lost that love for them
Casino Royale is one of the greatest soundtracks ever. The film is one of the worst in the history of motion pictures. It doesn't make any sense on a number of levels, good writers and a stellar cast but the screenplay is all over the place..

The old hate the young. Sums up British politics.
The young hate the old which is amusing because they forget that, if they are lucky, they will be old at some point themselves.
It comes sooner than expected. Where have the last forty years gone?
My feeling exactly. I am 61 on Sunday and still think I am 20. Sadly my body takes great pleasure in reminding me that is not the case.
I am 50 and can still do anything except I regularly do my back in putting my socks on.
France had its hottest night time temp ever recorded.
30 degrees at night.
It is 28 degrees still in my living with doors and windows wide open.
This climate change hoax thing sure is weird.
29.5 in my living room right now, with the fan on, kitchen window open, all bedroom windows open and the attic skylight open!
Supposedly 31 in my living room, but I doubt that as it feels pretty comfortable at the moment, until I go into the bedroom where things immediately heat up.

Yes, know the feeling. I have to sit on the stairs to put on my socks (and sandals, of course!)

May take a while with our court system.
Without the bike there's no way of determining if it has been modified or not.
This is presumably separate from recovering any losses.
I'll see if I can find out more detail.
A debate on illegal Israeli settlements of all things.
Not the most pressing matter concerning households I’d have thought.

we look at the voting intention by taste in pop music. One of my favourites yet!
- Reform strongest among Dua Lipa and Take That fans
- The Tories do best among One Direction fans
- Greens dominate among Chappell Roan fans
- If only Kendrick Lamar fans could vote it’d be a Labour landslide
- Taylor Swift fans come closest to being a three way Labour-Ref-Con tie.
-Harry Styles fans take us back to two party Lab-Con politics
Ed Sheeran was the most selected and Reform narrowly lead, followed by Paul McCartney with a narrow Tory lead'

So the idea that any election would have got you what you want is completely for the birds
Do I have opinions? 😆
I haven't seen much in the way of reports of food shortages in Crimea yet. There's undoubtedly a fuel supply crisis, but as long as they can keep the supermarket shelves stocked with food it's not yet becoming a more general crisis.
Which, fair play, is probably true of some, but I grew up too poor to be establishment, I'm just an elitist.
Little Miss Angry does not exist.

They must practice penalties, why don't coaches tell them to stop?
And don't tell me the players won't listen, they listen to every other coaching style of play they are told.
Let the workers work.
Embarrassing, but been there.
Absolute bs being spouted about the time delay by ITV commentators, both keeper and striker are waiting it doesn't disadvantage either, 3 minute wait to take a penalty is normal in field hockey.

Binface beat him in the 2021 London mayoral election, so it's time for payback.
There’s no changing the mind for Labour now. It’s actually happening. 😃
(The reason for the squats was that half of north London had been CPO'd by the DoT for an inner-city motorway which, thankfully, never came to pass.)

"Do you want to someone to give you a day's wages to do what you want?" Remarkable it was only 33%.

Never lost that love for them
Switzerland have parked the bus all the way to the QF.
And I need you more than ever
And if you only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong
Together, we can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time (All of the time)
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight"
