    Evening all :)

It's now clear Badenoch has decided Farage meant what he said all along when he talked about destroying the Conservative Party and has decided to fight back.

Her words are fine - I'm sure they would have been echoed by all sensible politicians and they would have been as lauded for them as she seems to be by her devotees.

Rhetoric often crashes into reality - I am frequently told by Mrs Stodge how overworked and under pressure Police resources are in East London and the problem, bluntly, is they cannot recruit. They simply cannot get enough new officers to bulk up the establishment.

Overworked and under pressure officers make mistakes as everyone does in all fields when times are tough and there are gaps whether it be Police, social workers or whatever.

    "they cannot recruit."

And yet a million kids are niets.

They need to start hitting TikTok with ads pointing out that they can retire after 30 years on a good pension. Explain to 18-20 year olds that you can spend thirty years truncheoning wrong ‘uns (you will be informed by email who the targets are depending on political winds) or sitting in squad cars eating and then you are golden.

Don’t tell them about the shitty things they have to deal with though.

With the best will in the world, the young people not in education, employment or training aren't necessarily the ones we want taking these sorts of decisions, because they are likely to get those decisions wrong. Which seems to be what has happened here. Two big questions that society is ducking:

1 How far are we willing to pay to have highly capable people doing all these public-facing public service jobs? Because in many cases, we do get the quality and quantity of people we are willing to pay for.

2 How does society make society work for good people with stout heart but not much else?

A number of officers in the force responsible for the arrest of Henry Nowak felt “controlled and pressured to feel certain ways” after receiving mandatory diversity training, a survey has revealed

But our bureaucrat in chief is adamant that the toothless IOPC investigation which is buying copious whitewash right now will find it wasn't fear of being seen as racist or anything to with bullshit diversity training that has infected every aspect of the public sector.

Could those people you are writing off be any worse than a lot of utterly useless drone MPs who are thick as pig shit but wore the right rosette?

Sometimes you will find if you give kids who have been left behind some exposure to organisation, rules, a focus, rewards, they actually find the, selves where they had been just left on the scrapheap.

There are loads of people who were written off who have joined the military over time who found that the structure and camaraderie lifted the, and they made successes of their lives - maybe the police could do too.

Come on, you can do better than this.

What is causing the inability to recruit? Is it the training, the money, the culture or something else? Is becoming a Police Officer seen as a viable and valuable career path these days and if not, why not?

I'd argue we need to create specialised training and education packages for trainee Police Officers to begin at age 16 - as someone once said, a comprehensive education to make up for a comprehensive education. That will take money and infrastructure - will, for instance, Kemi Badenoch commit to such funding?

It also begs the question as to what kind of Police force we want or need these days and indeed recent events have thrown that into sharper focus.

Max, hun, stop acting like a chump.

I work in the public sector, you don't. I have not had any "bullshit diversity training" in any of the institutions where I have worked. That's enough to disprove your thesis about every aspect of the public sector. Can I suggest changing your media diet?

Yes, I've had enough of grifters on the right projecting nonsense at the gullible to get them angry. Because it leads to people getting hurt.

    See also:

Over the weekend Orla Minihane, a national spokesperson for Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain party, claimed that Eastbury School in Barking, east London, had left a young girl in tears after confiscating her packed lunch.

Minihane claimed this was because the pupil “had a ham sandwich [and] pork is banned” at the school.

The post on X quickly amassed 33,000 likes, more than half a million views and vast numbers of anti-Muslim replies. In response to those who asked for the evidence of the ham sandwich ban, Minihane said she was “merely telling you what I was told”, and invited followers to “call the school” if they don’t believe her.

So London Centric did exactly that.

The school directed us to Barking and Dagenham Council, who told us: “Eastbury Community School is not a pork-free school and pork products are available within the school’s catering provision. The school is not aware of any incident in which a pupil has had food confiscated for bringing pork products into school.”

Already exist in FE- it's BTECs in Public Services. But nobody cares, or even knows, about FE. Certainly nobody wants to spend money on it.

We definitely do get mandatory DEI training in the Uni sector. And some of it is very definitely questionable, and coming from a very ‘woke’ viewpoint. I’ve already shared that my Uni is intending to not follow the EHRC guidance on trans for instance.

I have to do 1 hour of DEI training every three years, but it is pretty much brain dead stuff. Apparently I am not allowed to discriminate against people with protected characteristics and need to be careful of using obselete language about them. That really is pretty much it.

Yes and incidents like this are blasted all over social media as deliberate misinformation or disinformation.

I do agree one of the key elements of populism is to whip up hysteria about things like this and unfortunately there are too many keyboard warriors ready, willing and able to believe this nonsense and spread it.

It's not easy to advocate for Freedom of Speech when you see this but the alternative, a highly regulated, censored and/or State controlled media, is far worse.

A lot of hysteria was whipped up over the George Floyd case and most left-wingers were absolutely fine with it because it suited their agenda.

Taking a step back from the division of BLM versus what happened in Southampton, can we perhaps step back and consider that both sides agree far more than not?

George Floyd was killed by racist policemen in the US.

Henry Nowak was attacked and police let racial bias (aka racism) lead them to prioritising false claims being made over the opportunity to save him. They failed him.

It is right in both cases than police discriminatory policies are reviewed and fixed, whether that is racism against black or white people.

This shouldn't be political controversial, speaking as a liberal who agrees completely with Badenoch in her statement.

What we need politicians to fix any issues and avoid is inciting the mob following such tragedies.

The George Floyd case has absolutely nothing to do with the UK and shouldn't be linked to the UK in any way.
Do you apply this rule to other US political imports? Would you say that arguments over critical race theory have absolutely nothing to do with the UK and shouldn’t be linked to the UK in any way, but Badenoch has linked them. Would you say that rabid evangelical anti-abortion opposition has absolutely nothing to do with the UK and shouldn’t be linked to the UK in any way, but Reform want to import that too.

There is no doubt that there was and is racism in the police in the UK. It was right to do something about that.
Shite post even by your standards. If critical race theory is influencing decisions in the UK, it can be debated in the UK. If we have abortions in the UK and Government sets the legal limits to them, we have a free debate about what those limits should be. To base decisions on UK policing, which is nothing like US policing, on an event that happened in the USA, is utterly indefensible, and shame on you for trying.
To just tackle the first of those… Critical race theory is not influencing decisions in the UK. That’s my point. But the right want to import one set of (MAGA) political obsessions from the US, so it’s hypocritical to complain about the importation of other political obsessions from the US. When Rupert Lowe stops pandering to Musk and Farage stops pandering to Trump, come back and talk.

But our bureaucrat in chief is adamant that the toothless IOPC investigation which is buying copious whitewash right now will find it wasn't fear of being seen as racist or anything to with bullshit diversity training that has infected every aspect of the public sector.

We definitely do get mandatory DEI training in the Uni sector. And some of it is very definitely questionable, and coming from a very ‘woke’ viewpoint. I’ve already shared that my Uni is intending to not follow the EHRC guidance on trans for instance.
Is that because they don't want to or because the toilet logistics are impossible / uneconomic?

Do more people recognise the breed in Europe?
Now and again someone comes up and recognises it straight away, and it’s always interesting to find out why, as they usually have some connection to a Pumi. Mostly, people either come up and ask, out of curiosity, or guess wrongly - in England the most common guess is Bedlington, right size and colour, completely different appearance. In Italy the most common wrong guess is Lagotto, the truffle-hunting dog, which is the right size and not dissimilar in appearance, but the wrong colour. When we went to Hungary, the home of the breed, in Budapest people kept coming up and recognising him, because they or family or friends apparently had one, but we didn’t actually see another Pumi the whole trip. I am passing through again in September so we will have another try. In Finland and Sweden - the other two countries with more than a handful, we got a bit more recognition but only met one other, in Sweden. Otherwise it’s just a few random meetings with other Pumis, such as when coming down a mountain in Alto Adige or visiting the DIY store in my home town.
Hamish and Harris would love to meet him, but, being Schnauzers, they would bark at him. (And you. And everyone else, real or imaginary.)

Some argue we have that now - we don't.
Do you know the book "Noah's Castle"? Written in the mid-1970s, what would now be called "Young Adult" fiction, but such things didn't exist at the time. Made into a series by Southern TV.

It's a British dystopia where food supplies run out and everything goes wrong. One of the minor characters is the Witty English Teacher, who spends the early part of the book doing the English Teacher thing of deconstructing government propoganda on how the crisis isn't a crisis and it will all be fine.

In a moment that has stuck with me, he gives up after a bit. Descontructing propoganda is interesting, but trying to do the same for flat-out lies isn't. Freedom of speech is a good thing, say what you like. But for that to work, factual pushback- even at the level of "that isn't true" needs to be part of the game. Otherwise, we end up... roughly here.

Jess Asato, the Labour MP for Lowestoft, previously said she felt violated after an image of her was manipulated using artificial intelligence.

She said a legal case was filed at the High Court on Wednesday. The MP is seeking damages but also wants to set a precedent for companies to be liable for the design of AI systems."

Yes, of course, you can find instances on the other side but the old adage of two wrongs not making a right seems particularly apposite.

I don't accept all the misinformation is coming from supporters of Restore but that they are responsible for some is undeniable.

Unfortunately, there is a significant group in the country who are ready and willing to believe examples such as this. That, I would argue, is the real problem.

How then do we confront the "populist wrong"?

It seems very unlikely that critical race theory is not influencing decisions in the UK, or is this the equivalent of turning DEI into EDI and pretending it's wholly unrelated to the US?

Max, hun, stop acting like a chump.

I work in the public sector, you don't. I have not had any "bullshit diversity training" in any of the institutions where I have worked. That's enough to disprove your thesis about every aspect of the public sector. Can I suggest changing your media diet?

Yes, I've had enough of grifters on the right projecting nonsense at the gullible to get them angry. Because it leads to people getting hurt.

Some argue we have that now - we don't.
A lot of hysteria was whipped up over the George Floyd case and most left-wingers were absolutely fine with it because it suited their agenda.
The key difference being. George Floyd happened. It wasn't invented by a liar for profit.

It seems very unlikely that critical race theory is not influencing decisions in the UK, or is this the equivalent of turning DEI into EDI and pretending it's wholly unrelated to the US?

I have to do 1 hour of DEI training every three years, but it is pretty much brain dead stuff. Apparently I am not allowed to discriminate against people with protected characteristics and need to be careful of using obselete language about them. That really is pretty much it.
    ...and that's DEI?

Sounds like good workplace relationships to me.

Jesus you are as bad as the far right using the race of footballers as a political stick. They are humans who play for England, there are more black players than black people in the country proportionally so most right minded people would understand that the chances are that a black player could take a penalty that misses - Arsenal fans have t gone all Reform with Gabriel and Eze missing.

But to try and claim some moral elevation whilst using those same black players as collateral in political games is what I would expect from you.

Off topic: But I think a few here might find this a pleasant break: Seattle has a cricket team: https://www.seattleorcas.com/
Something I learned quite recently, when they got some TV coverage.

(They chose an interesting name. In this area, Orcas are worshiped by many -- and I am serious when I say "worshipped".)

If you will excuse me for making a small suggestion: You would be better off, I think, if you had more men playing cricket, and fewer rioting.

A second small suggestion: London really needs a Triple A baseball club. (And, of course, do Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, and Rome. To start with)

To be fair, we have rather more people playing cricket than rioting over the summer.

You may be pleased to hear that cycling through Wythenshawe Park a couple of weeks back I saw a gane of baseball in progress. A proper one, on a proper baseball diamond with chain link fencing and benches and both teams in properr uniforms. It didn't have a crowd, but it mattered to the players.
As a sport, it is almost as picturesque as cricket.
Of US sports baseball is far the best to play and watch.
I’ve been to precisely one baseball match (in Toronto). It was a 1-0 borefest. How anyone can prefer baseball over cricket is beyond me. With the pitch you have opportunities for the ball to deviate, bounce etc. And no gloves needed to catch the ball.

Extra bit: Insee you were talking only of US sports. I think Football is a decent watch even though they have gone insane with protective clothing.
    Baseball is boring.

There's literally only one shot... you take big frickin' swing at the ball. And sometimes you make contact. And someimes that contact means the ball is in play. And sometimes that means people get a chance to run around.

Still: there is one aspect which is good. And, which I didn't get until I went to a game, and that is the way that tension ramps up in an innings because each swing becomes incrementally more important. When the first guy comes out, and swings... well if it all goes well, he can get one run. But if the bases are stacked, and there are two people out, then suddenly it's really consequential: an out means no runs and the end of the innings. While a home run can bring in four runs.
It's a really boring game, but it has provided a canvas for some very good movies and TV.
My favourite is the Kdrama Hot Stove League.

We definitely do get mandatory DEI training in the Uni sector. And some of it is very definitely questionable, and coming from a very ‘woke’ viewpoint. I’ve already shared that my Uni is intending to not follow the EHRC guidance on trans for instance.
I'm no longer in academia, but before I left (about six months ago) I'd only been required to do one bit of DEI* training which was on unconscious bias and only mandatory for recruiters (which I was). The bulk of mandatory training was information security, data protection etc and, once per year, fire training.

The populist right tells lies to make the gullible angry. And I've had enough of kid-gloving that.
I have to do 1 hour of DEI training every three years, but it is pretty much brain dead stuff. Apparently I am not allowed to discriminate against people with protected characteristics and need to be careful of using obselete language about them. That really is pretty much it.
I have to do a similar 'training' thing every few years. Just an online 'click the button' thing. "In this situation, should you suddenly say something massively racist? Yes/No".

It seems to be keeping some young actors in gainful employ however acting out painfully obvious scenarios that would embarrass a 15 year-old with their obviousness. The IT Security one I have to do on a similar schedule is equally bad. Though doesn't seem to excersise The Telegraph quite as much. For some reason.
Does anyone else here get the 'Cyber Police' security training videos? It has a bit of a cult following where I work, in a SOBIG kind of way.

If you take the wikiworm average seriously, Reform peaked at around 31% last October and have now settled around 27%. There's not much sign that their ratings have gone up following their triumphs in the May local elections, and I'd be expecting to see any bounce by now.

    (source for these ramblings, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_United_Kingdom_general_election)

Labour and the Conservatives have been pretty flat since the start of 2026, at about 19% each. The Greens are a bit below that, and the Lib Dems a bit below that. All the rest is noise.

And whilst 31% was enough to be top of the pops last autumn, it's also the share of the vote that poor John Major got in 1997. 27% is about what Michael Foot got in 1983.

Farage isn't popular. It's just that the two thirds of the population who don't want him don't have an agreement on who they would prefer in his place.

I've told the story before of my introduction to the philosophy of policing, but I think it bears repeating in relation to the death of Henry Nowak.

I had been knocked off my bicycle by a car and the driver had left the scene before the police arrived. The police wanted to breathalyse him, but he didn't answer the phone number he'd left me (so I could contact him about claiming on his insurance for my injuries and the damage to my bicycle). This irked the police and, as they gave me a lift to my daughter's school, they explained that they weren't sure whether the driver was a wrong 'un, or a decent upstanding member of society who had made a mistake.

It transpired that the police categorise everyone they come into contact with as either scum - such as the sort of person who would leave a fake phone number and leave the scene of a road traffic collision to avoid facing the consequences - or as decent folk that they need to protect from scum.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Humans do this sort of thing all the time, and cognitive shortcuts are the only way that we can process and navigate a world that bombards us with a lot of information and a lot of decisions that could be the difference between life and death if we get them wrong. For the police it's really important that they identify someone who is scum, because those are the people who will try and hurt them.

I also encountered this on non-violent direct action protests I took part in, where the police identified us as not-scum, and a lot safer to deal with than the Rangers/Celtic fans from the prior weekend.

Given the context that they had when they encountered Henry Nowak - that he was the alleged offender - you can see why they would put him into the wrong category, and how that would then lead them to consequently dismiss it when he told them that he had been stabbed. But they need to be able to know when it is safe to challenge their assumptions in an incident like this and to check things.

And they also need to care about whether the people they've categorised as scum live or not, which given the number who have died after being restrained it is not obvious that they always do.

As a general point I think we need to be better about learning from mistakes, and holding people accountable for their failures (these being distinct things) and not shoehorning every shocking incident into a pre-existing ideological divide.

It seems very unlikely that critical race theory is not influencing decisions in the UK, or is this the equivalent of turning DEI into EDI and pretending it's wholly unrelated to the US?

    > The security guard at the Manchester Arena didn't stop the suicide bomber because he was afraid of being called racist. The bomber killed 22 people and injured over 1,000.

    > Valdo Calocane was released because authorities feared they would be called "racist" due to the overrepresentation of young black men in mental health detention. He went on to kill 3 people.

    > A head teacher who raised concerns about Axel Rudakubana's "very high risk" to others was accused of "racial stereotyping" by authorities. Rudakubana went on to kill 3 young girls and wound 10 others.

If my name was attached to any of these decisions I would tell people that I made them because I feared I would be called a racist too!
Exactly so. It's a handy excuse compared to having to admit to a more serious failing of courage or judgement.

Farage is a stinking, festering turd who needs to be flushed out of British politics. That's all.
Narrator: Farage is the leader of a party on 27% in the opinion polls, on track to become Prime Minister after the next general election.

Just as with Trump becoming President of the US, your disgust at this prospect will not be enough to prevent it from happening.
Indeed. Being on 27% his prospects entirely depend on whether Labour or the Tories rebound and get more than that, as a whole bunch of people in the 20s is recipe for chaos (though Reform the biggest beneficiaries).

I'll believe he's on his way down when the 'traditional' parties are listened to again, which has not happened yet.
    Kemi is getting a hearing.

    Burnham may well too.
Tories could really use a Scottish by-election win to improve their narrative, to go along with the 'slow recovery/decent ratings for Kemi' narrative.

    I don't expect it.

The populist right tells lies to make the gullible angry. And I've had enough of kid-gloving that.
That is the Orla Minihane has joined Restore as national spokesperson for safety for women and girls? Systematic lying may be a feature not a bug to some.

It will be a handful and a landmine for Rupes, and fun for media; she is given to repeating whatever made-up BS she finds lying about online. She's also an "abortion is murder" type, given to extreme claims. She was previously the vice chair of Reform Epping, as is perhaps a good example of the layer they are losing.

Orla is way beyond "populist", and is networked up with very strange people. Also (I was surprised), with Susan Hall, around Pink Ladies, where Minihane was a prominent figure.

Last year, she shared a platform at the Epping Bell Hotel demonstrations with Callum Barker, of the neo-nazi Homeland Party, which is a splinter of Patriotic Alternative. Callum Barker had 2 years in prison for violent abuse of a former partner.

Perhaps Rupert, like Nigel, only has Shrodinger's vetting system.

Not to trigger anyone... but Biden is back.

So let me get this straight.

Jake Tapper is focused on attacking my Mom.

Jared and Ivanka are building a private island paradise on Albanian protected land.

Don Jr married the daughter of Epstein’s banker, and a startup his fund backs just got a record $620M Pentagon loan.

Eric is taking an Israeli drone company public for $1.5B in the middle of a war with Iran that nobody wanted.

And I know: “But what about your paintings, Hunter?”

    Please.

Wold they be allowed in the World Series or is that only for Americans? :D
Point of order: there are Canadian teams in Major League Baseball.
But surely that’s a US state?

Baseball is endlessly fascinating. Like cricket.
But we aren't brought up on it here so don't appreciate its intricacies. So it appears boring cos not much noticeable happens for long periods.

What intricacies? There don’t appear to be any spinners, for instance. And the only two shots seem to be swing as hard as you can an bunt.
    But maybe I’m missing something.
    Quite a lot.
    Go on then.

    Exclusive from @billcurtis0 and @matt_dathan

A number of officers in the force responsible for the arrest of Henry Nowak felt “controlled and pressured to feel certain ways” after receiving mandatory diversity training, a survey has revealed

But our bureaucrat in chief is adamant that the toothless IOPC investigation which is buying copious whitewash right now will find it wasn't fear of being seen as racist or anything to with bullshit diversity training that has infected every aspect of the public sector.

Since Schroedinger apparently had a history of sexual abuse of teenage girls, that is an unfortunate characterisation.
