Is this running out of steam now?

Surely we need to see a number of further and significant resignations by end of today to maintain the momentum?

    We shall see!

The BBC reported excitedly at 2 that they had been told by several sources there were going to be more resignations this afternoon. An hour on, nada. I think Starmer has survived for now. The Burnham supporters want their man in the field first.
Not sure. Most of the cabinet are still maintaining radio silence. I wouldn't call it over until the 6pm news is out of the way

Aren't we also due the Big Reveal of who is sacrificing themselves to give the King of the North a way back to Westminster? (Sorry, resigning their seat to trigger a by-election and hoping that the NEC and the voters will play ball.)

Four MPs now say they have been in touch with allies of Al Carns and are convinced he is preparing a run for the leadership - although likely only if the PM stands down first

It is all so utterly feeble
It shows that Catherine West was entirely right in her assessment of those who are plotting with anonymous briefings to journalists. They are all too gutless to do anything publicly.

Such a disappointment that she backed down.

    Birmingham council has now finished.

    23 RFM
    19 GRN
    17 LAB
    16 CON
    13 IND
    12 LD
    1 WORKERS.

Realistically Green, Lab,LD=50/101 then try to co-opt some of the indies on individual policies
Reform told itv earlier they could not form an administration so will have to be some kind of left alliance
Got to ask what happens when no combination can create a majority
On one hand, a council administration doesn't need an absolute majority, though good luck passing a budget without at least tacit tolerance from enough members. I wonder what the deepest minority council administration out there is?

(Gosport is now C11 Ref10 LD6 Ind1; hard to imagine the Lib Dems wanting to throw their weight behind either of the bigger groups. Why do I keep ending up living in places with insane local government?)
Isn't the next budget deadline Feb 2027 ?
That's quite a bit of time to sort something out.
According to Gosport's own website, the Council meeting scheduled for next Wednesday evening has been "adjourned" so not quite sure whether that means they need additional time to form an administration.

The question on the numbers is the Conservative/Reform relationship, A Conservative minoritywith Reform support might be an option but so might a Conservative minority daring any of the other parties to join forces.

Another option is an all-party administration.

    So 51 for a majority?
    What are the independents? Centre-left?
So I assume a grand coalition of G/L/LD/Ind, Kemi having ruled out Con / Reform
Has Kemi told the Tory leader in Bradford? He seemed quite keen.
Cos there'll be no majority at all there otherwise.
I keep banging on about this - but to me the obvious coalition partners should be Con and Lab (and perhaps LD, if they need further support).
In Bradford that would only work with the Greens as well.
And that would be a majority of 1 with 3 vacancies.
As a blanket policy excluding Reform altogether isn't going to work in practice.
The biggest winner from an everyone-but-Ref coalition of massively disperate viewpoints would be Reform. Better to do it on an item-by-item basis.

Sky News narrative has become those selfish Labour MPs will cost us all in the pocket.

Well they are not wrong really, but Starmer needs to fall on his sword.

Wouldn't read anything into the "adjourned" meeting. Tradition is to have the Annual Meeting for Mayor-making and nothing else. Then adjourn until the following evening for all the unpleasant political stuff.

    Good afternoon everyone.

A fascinating presentation by Kate Carpenter, Vice President of the Chartered Institute for Highways and Transportation, about how demographics and population variability affects transportation and safety.

(An example is the impact that Crash Test dummies largely being based on a 50th-percentile man has on the safety of women - who are smaller and have different muscular-skeletal and soft-tissue, children - who are very different, and older people - who's bodies are not used, has on their safety in motor vehicles.)

Deep link to the start of her presentation:

There's a Q&A at the end for enthusiasts, and a further short presentation on the effect of sideroad Zebra Crossings.

A fascinating presentation by Kate Carpenter, Vice President of the Chartered Institute for Highways and Transportation, about how demographics and population variability affects transportation and safety. It's about how Equality is about reflecting the needs of all users, and how that needs to be drawn out of data (my addition - rather than dogma).

  • Good thread on what a Burnham premiership might actually do

1/ Thought experiment doing the rounds in my head this morning. Burnham replaces Starmer. He walks into Number 10 with the Manchester accent and the real Labour framing. He announces the renationalisation of water, energy, rail, and grid. All of it. Funded by, well, vibes mostly.
Here’s how the next twelve months actually play out.

    https://x.com/eggplant_elon/status/2055944901620068488?s=61&t=GGp3Vs1t1kTWDiyA-odnZg

    TL;DR - it doesn’t end well

    My thoughts are

    1. Burnham PROBABLY wouldn’t go this far left. He’d like to, but the gilt market would crush him before he even started

    2. I’m increasingly skeptical he will win Makerfield. The opportunity to give Labour - and the powers-that-be - an almighty kicking, will be too hard to resist. I agree with the Labour pols in the Guardian who give him a ‘45%’ chance
