The Tories need to make an offer on economic competence, business, strong defence, *and* immigration reform.
There's a path to 30% there (albeit a very narrow one) if they play their cards right.
Otherwise, they really will be down to sub 60 seats.
They can't outbid Reform on immigration (culture wars v2), so they have to concentrate on economic competence, business and strong defence. Nobody else is in that space, so they can roam free *and* it's their comfort zone.
Where has this idea that every SEND pupil must have a taxi come from? I worked at a SEND school covering a huge rural area. I mean rural, not Home Counties "rural". The vast majority (80%?) came on buses. The vast majority of the rest by their parents. A very few came by taxi, usually three or four in one, but that was usually because there weren't the numbers to make a bus full.

Immigration Reform after they were the ones who allowed over a million immigrants to arrive.
Now granted it was Braverman and Jenrick who invited them in and organised housing for the illegal immigrants but I can't see Nigel saying that...
Quite, but Casino is right, they do need to offer this as part of their proposal for government and although it’s a shitty card to play, play it they must.
Their best hope, rather oddly, is if Shabana Mahmood actually gets a grip and manages to reduce immigration significantly and take the sting out of the issue.
As Chris Mason often points out, Reform are the exciting new alternative to the Conservatives, with exciting new people who have never previously considered a career in national politics.
The Tories just can't help themselves from being nasty. What's the comment on mental health about?
Obviously it looks like this series of defections has been stored up to give Reform momentum in the new year in the run-up to the local elections. But the local elections are still more than three months away. How many more are there going to be?
The Tories can hardly keep saying that their MPs were such wrong 'uns that they're delighted to see them defect as the number that does so creeps ever higher. It really undermines their credibility.
I do have to wonder at someone like Braverman who chooses this time to defect, when Farage has been so weak in his response to Trump's hostility towards Britain.

That's a trap. It's easy to jump from there to saying it should be ignored.
A big part of the reason Reform exists is that they screwed up on that, so they need to neutralise it.
Tory spokesman on Suella Braverman's defection to Reform: "The Conservatives did all we could to look after Suella’s mental health, but she was clearly very unhappy."
👀
Probably best left unsaid. It is the Tories so they might just get away with it.
The reaction of the Tories on here to prominent right wingers leaving the party sadly validates my view that the party is now just a bluer version of the Lib Dems, and incapable of forming a big enough tent to ever be electable again.
Was it not Johnson that shrank the tent with his demand for loyalty to his bastardised Brexit deal (not that I necessarily blame him for that - he probably took the only possible action to break the impasse)?
A party that could once again accommodate e.g. a Ken Clarke will be far more electable than one that can accommodate e.g. a Jenrick.
Boris attempted to follow The Donald's ruthless disregard for constitutional convention (and facts) but here, finally, the Supreme Court stopped him and the Cabinet wearied of him. Britain Trump indeed.
No Farage is Britain Trump. Economically Boris was a big spender and much more liberal than Trump and Farage on immigration too, indeed Boris even backed Ken Clarke for Tory leader in 2001
In 2001 Trump was a registered Democrat.
Fair point, Farage has always been a Thatcherite though so on that basis Farage is even right of Trump economically
Most western governments of all colours seem utterly addicted to over spending and transfer payments. I don’t know what’s to be done about it. Sunak was the most left wing Chancellor/PM in our history probably.
Osborne was more fiscally conservative as to an extent were Hunt and Hammond and Stride is more in that vein too
Osborne promised an austerity govt. He then went on to more than double (?) the national debt, taxed the productive parts of the economy, slashed capital spending and gave transfer payments to his core voters.
The deficit fell from 10% in 2010 to 3% in 2016 as Osborne cut spending in all areas bar the NHS and local government (which admittedly should also have had fat cut).
He also took the lowest earners out of income tax and cut corporation tax from 28% to 20% and introduced an Employment Allowance to reduce employers NI costs
Interest rates were at 0.5% back then, which helped rather a lot.
“At a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?” He pointed to his forehead and looked to his press secretary for the word that escaped him.
“Alzheimer’s,” Leavitt said.
“Like an Alzheimer’s thing,” Trump said. “Well, I don’t have it.
Braverman is a talented and intelligent politician
You can utterly despise her views - as of course the centrist Dorks all do - but still accept that she has real skills. And some courage - to stand apart
Farage is assembling an impressive potential front bench. Thus disarming one of the main accusations against him
Tories applauding her departure are insane. The party is becoming the Lib Dems without the amazing charm

Have you dipped your foot in the water? N. Herefordshire would be easy pickings I would have thought. Particularly now they have realised they rejected the Tories in favour of sandal wearing commies.
The defection of Suella Braverman, who was sacked twice from Government in disgrace, spent £700m of taxpayers' money to send four volunteers to Rwanda on a deportation scheme that was then scrapped and has a public approval rating of minus 32 is currently being described as a "major coup" for Reform

She's still popular on the right, and a Tory party that has lost all its most prominent figures on the right-wing will find it harder to contest that electoral space with Reform.
And in Britain's current fractured politics Reform - Indeed any party - can probably win a majority on Foot's ~28% of the vote. They don't need to appeal to the centre ground at all.
This is becoming a REAL existential problem for the Tories, they are “detoxing” themselves into irrelevant oblivion. This IS the “60 seats” strategy. Their aim is to survive as slightly more right wing Lib Dems, but with equal, nugatory chances of power, and a slow decline into extinction

No. That Scott and paste is Gibberish.

That’s the main problem. do the defectors take the years of failure with them - as the Conservative Party HQ is trying to spin it as their isn’t another rebuttal option - or is it still owned by the Conservative Brand, defectors themselves getting washed clean by escaping the failures associated with the Conservative brand. 😕
That building is such an eyesore, but it's in such a great location and it's a top candidate for being demolished and the site reused for a new building.
There's now an incredibly high chance of the Tories leading the next government, absent a miraculous Labour recovery.
Still uncertain as to whether it will be Farage's Tories or Kemi's Tories. But it'll be one of them.
It's good to have the political struggle between the two factions in the Tory party conducted out in the open, where it will be the voters who decide which one wins.
“I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight. He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there. Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me...” - President Donald J. Trump

What about Chris Philp?
Current shadow Home Secretary, he was Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the Truss Ministry for the disastrous Kwarteng budget.
Wendy Morton MP was Chief Whip under Truss, but persona non grata when Sunak took over. Maybe she's one for defection watch?
Or Kit Malthouse MP?
He was part of Johnson's gang when Johnson was Mayor of London, serving as deputy Mayor for the whole eight years. He then joined Johnson's cabinet to make up the numbers in July 2022 when everyone else resigned, and was Secretary of State for Education under Truss, but returned to the backbenches when Sunak took over.
The main doubt I have is that he's a co-sponsor of the assisted dying bill, so he probably has higher priorities than jumping ship at the moment.

A Tory gain from Reform in the Bakeoff Constituency?
Sadly it’s even worse.
It’s filmed in Welford Park in Newbury which is Lib Dem territory.
I was just trying to cheer the crestfallen Tories. Back in the day wasn't she on the New Labour celebrity circuit?
The actual battle is not with reform, it’s the Conservative Brand that is the biggest battle for the Conservative Party right now. The solution has to be go be different to Reform, don’t be reform but with that bad record in government that loses voters, or else reform win, move back to the centre, and stop merely photocopying Farage’s policies like using ICE to deport seven hundred thousand people living working and in school here, stop being a drill baby drill party of climate change deniers, don’t glibly leave ECHR before pushing for reform. Etc.
