I’d love to have a dog now I’m retired but I can’t get over the thought of pickings it’s shit up. I remember once a dog walk with my mother and her dogs. One took a runny dump and she was trying to clean it up and it was like a dirty protest in The Maize.
That's not really practical, so very brave of her to even try.
But you might also want to consider the vet bills for Fido. One reason for the increase is the moving in of big business, taking over practices on the private medical/dental industry model. I know a vet very unhappy with this - very glad to be retired now.
Lots of people have dumped Rover and Pussy on the RSPCA/SSPCA/etc in recent years because they can't afford aforesaid animals. Or just chuck them out of the car window etc.
You’ve made a great point. Anecdotal, obvs but I’ve read plenty of people grumbling about the increase in cost of pet insurance recently.
I’d have tropical fish or an Emperor Scorpion or a Chilean rose hair tarantula but her magnificence objects.
(I think you actually brought this to PBs attention, funnily enough). I'm pretty sure there are one post codes that have seen bigger drops but I'll revise to 12% until I find that data.
The interesting bit will be the data when it segmented.
I wouldn’t be surprised by big falls in less good properties, with increases in other parts of the market, at the same time.
Everything can be true though. It can be true that Carlson was mauled by one of his dogs in their (and his) sleep, but also that in Carlson's dream, this manifested itself as a very real encounter with a demonic presence that clawed at him, that played into a spiritual battle in his life that was real to him. We all have our own truths. Perceptive people see this, and recognise that their own truth is not objective reality, but simply their own experience.
Sounds like you're looking for another excuse for Trump's behaviour tbh.... when he says he's 'stopped eight wars', or 'prices are coming down' those are his own 'truths'.
In Carlson's example there is only one truth and I doubt it involved demons.
The commonest form of animal cruelty in Britain is the practice of snaring fish on barbed hooks for entertainment, tossing them back injured into the water without even the redeeming excuse of cooking. But, of course, it isn't about the animals, it's about the sort of people who hunt them. Just as people without skin in the game actively choose to be outraged about Palestine, so they also choose to get upset about foxes, to the exclusion of all else.
While there may be people like that, you're generalising too widely - I'm just as opposed to the snaring that you refer to. Basically animal suffering shouldn't be part of a sport. I think you'd find a majority of people of all persuasions would agree.
Although the burns report found that correctly performed hunting was the best available option.
Although I still laugh at the concept that being hunted and killed “seriously compromises the welfare of the quarry”
Many years ago I knew someone who shot foxes for farmers.
She used a reproduction Sharps rifle and a night vision scope.
Someone from the local animal sanctuary thing got upset at what that did to the foxes. But it ensured they went to fox heaven instantly or not at all.
That’s the best way, but it’s very difficult and expensive to do well so there is a risk of wounding instead which just causes a painful and slow death
They have REM sleep. Surmising, I'd say that is to "process" (whatever that means for Fido) and to recover from the previous period (also, whatever that means).
I've known cats, and they do things in their sleep.
Here imo it's about Carlson going to 0.01% explanations over 99.9% explanations, and what has created that state of mind for him. It reminds me of the one or two people I have met over the years who firmly profess that God always intervenes to save a parking space in Central London for them; I have not been able to tell whether they were joking.
You mean you’ve never heard of the catholic parking prayer?
Holy Mary, full of grace Help me find a parking space

Today's "Junior" doctors knew what their salary scales would be when they chose* to apply to med school. What those salary scales were when their parents made that same choice is irrelevant.
They are on a conveyor belt to six-figure salaries, plus wheelbarrows of cash from private work on the side. They're not exactly queuing at the food bank.
*Or in some cases, had it drilled into them from the age of 5 that any other degree option would bring disgrace on the family.

I was talking to a Canadian pet pharmaceutical manufacturer recently - the end price that uk pet parents pay for pharmaceuticals is multiple higher than they pay in the US and Canada because of the margin that the clinic companies and distributors take as well as the taxes

I was wary of it before we got ours but soon got used to it. My mother in laws dog once did a shit so runny it resembled chicken korma. No way to clear it up, so I scarpered (and felt bad, but what was I to do?)
I nearly (until a chest infection for me) was planning to dog sit this Christmas. The range of comments for this Shit-Poo (therapy) dog was quite extensive. There's quite a lot more, including a different set of required behaviours for the room used for therapy.

What’s the difference between “sit” and “sit pretty”?
According to AI, there have been 228 convictions for hunting with dogs since the ban came into force in 2004. 228 convictions in 20 years is a miniscule figure. This is a malicious, despicable ban from an entirely rotten Government.
It's a subject on which I have no view, Lucky, but the older of my two border collies (pic as per avatar) definitely has.
She pursued a fox down its hole a couple of months back and got second prize in the ensuing fight.
It led to a very quiet and thoughtful night in.
So yes, she opposes the ban.
I had to dig one of my Jack Russell’s out of a fox hole once. It took me six hours to get to him. My girlfriend at the time thought he would come out if she waved a slab of pate at the hole much to my disbelief.

Presumably the Wee Free one is for an incredibly awkward parking space on a rain blasted hillside several miles from one’s destination.
to show the crap on here re benefits being £70 a week. Why work for minimum wage.
Oh my God, you posted an image.
One of my best photos of a fox, taken in October on the south bank of the Thames near Greenland Dock, opposite Canary Wharf.
I set up wild life cameras. A few years ago, in my compost area, I got a video of a vixen with her cubs feeding from her and her trying to get them interested in a rat.
AW149 is definitely going to win NHM so this wanker is just trying to arm twist the government to get it announced. Probably needs to make his bonus or something.
Farage is a fox hunting fan so he'll probably bring it back if he makes it to No. 10 so the sadists and their vicariously sadistic supporters can relax.
From the Tory side Jenrick has also made clear his opposition 'Generational British pursuits like grouse shooting, deer stalking, and trail hunting are all under siege from a metropolitan class that loathe the countryside way of life. Make no mistake, I will oppose each and every assault on our traditional pursuits.' https://www.conservativeruralforum.org.uk/robert-jenricks-rural-statement
In the words of the Labour manifesto 'it is being used as a smokescreen for the hunting of wild animals' and in fairness this is true. There have been so many examples. Only the other week hunt saboteurs recorded exactly this from a drone - clear hunting of a fox.
The hunts only have themselves to blame for this. It is a shame because a British tradition could have been kept if it had adapted, but they seem incapable of doing so and keeping to the law.
The original ban was done out of spite too and has made it difficult to keep fox numbers down and protect sheep and livestock and pet rabbits etc
They should do zoning for fox hunting. Focus on urban areas.
Plenty of potential demand for hunts here in the South East London suburbs. It seems there’s a fox in every back garden, and another rifling through every food caddy that’s not been tightly clipped shut.
The height of the walls and fences might be a challenge for the horses though.
We have to feed ours every night. It's a sort of protection racket they run. If you don't you end up having to pick up their crap in the back garden every morning.
I used to not mind them but now having a cat it's a slight worry.
Our cats would chase the foxes out the garden.
All other things being equal, cats are more than a match for foxes.
I gather urban foxes are now emboldened to take cats, which they never used to be.

In our previous home there was a badger sett in the woods at the bottom of the garden. We were visited most nights in the spring, summer and autumn. I often regret leaving that house, but it was far, far too big for an elderly couple.

Sit pretty is sitting on their hind legs front paws up. Some think it is a bit cruel and not good for dogs. I have no idea, but we haven't taught our dog to do this.
The most important thing to remember about dog-sitting is to keep the pooch away from water. Otherwise you don't know what evil will befall them.

My black cat chases our local foxes when he spots one. Which is frequently: they’re in the garden daily.
The whole metropolitan/rural culture war angle here is silly. Foxes are arguably a much bigger pest in the city than in the sticks. I’ve never seen one on my vineyard, unlike the “wild” (yeah, right) pheasants that get raised in cages then released en-masse ready to chow down on my crop each year. I cooked 2 last night as micro-revenge.
We also have rabbits. The bastards not only dig warrens right under the vines in the root zone, killing dozens of them, but they decided the black piles of bird netting I’d left in the vineyard ready for bagging up would make a nice warm bed to shit on. So I turned up yesterday to find each one covered in countless little brown pellets.
Yes, yet another attack on the countryside from Labour
Hunts are not universally liked in the countryside. In fact you'll come across farmers who absolutely detest them. And talking of pets, it's not uncommon for a family dog or cat to get ripped into pieces by them.
Which pets rip family dogs or cats into pieces?
#pedanticbetting.com
(Seriously, though, this is just more red meat for the nutters on Labour's left wing. 'We may be stripping people of disability benefits and kept a SEND denier* as chief of the DfE, but we're banning hunting! Yay!'
Hunting is basically an irrelevance, which is why Theresa May was a fool to talk about it the other way.)
*A reference to the latest inanities from Susan Acland-Hood.
It’s not an irrelevance to the people that have had their pets torn open. One of our neighbours, elderly, on her own, lost her cat to these cruelty loving shites. I’d cane the fuckers that did for the cat. And it still wouldn’t hurt them as much as they hurt her for the fun of it. Ban.

So this would be a non working severely disabled mum with two dependent children renting for £100 per week and feeding her family of three on £50 PW.
I suppose hypothetically such a family might exist but so rare it wouldn't tell us anything if it did.
She'll also be single and separated - the child maintenance is paid by the father and not the state. Easy to jump to an opinion and gloss over facts.
Also it is very rare for child maintenance to be paid, as the fathers usually claim they have yet another family to support. In fact the whole story could be someone's creative thinking.

Not sure it is that rare for maintenance to be paid

OK. Here's an example of someone with some form of disability, who has children, and who has separated or left a partner. She has the responsibility to look after them. If she was sitting in front of you so what would you advise her to do with the children or with her accommodation? How about the spending lines; are there any items you could cut out? Is she overspending in any areas or being excessive?

Why does she need to cut back? She has £650 spare each month... I'd advise her to be frugal and stick £5000 a year in an ISA or SIPP.

I did wonder about something like this. I dimly recall successfully betting against Australia many years ago after some of their team had been spotted in West End nightclubs. The difference being they'd already won the Ashes by this point.

paying pensioners
Do you think we should stop, the state pension full stop ?
I remember the series and I enjoyed it at the time, but a masterpiece?
Hmm. I also remember it as a camp classic with over-the-top costumes and acting and poor BBC sets and quarries. But if you strip away the glitter and look at the plots, they were quite good for the time and I think libertarian Americans have reappraised it slightly on that basis. People keep wanting to reboot it, tho I think it's best left where it is.
The ending tho is brilliant. Most long-running series don't commit to the bit so hard.

I often regret leaving that house, but it was far, far too big for an elderly couple.

I suppose hypothetically such a family might exist but so rare it wouldn't tell us anything if it did.

Seems like the monthly outgoings would be more credible as weekly ones.
Also it is very rare for child maintenance to be paid, as the fathers usually claim they have yet another family to support. In fact the whole story could be someone's creative thinking.

The ending tho is brilliant. Most long-running series don't commit to the bit so hard.
