Piss up in a brewery time.
  • Jonathan Carley, 64, was arrested at his home in Harlech on Friday after being accused of impersonating a rear admiral.

The retired teacher saluted the war memorial in Llandudno, North Wales, on Sunday while wearing a row of 12 medals over an ill-fitting uniform.

North Wales Police arrested him under the 1894 Uniforms Act, which bars anyone who has not served in the armed forces from wearing military uniform.

There were a lot of irate posters on X going on about this, so someone will have identified the berk and complained to the plod.

The Polanski Greens have momentum (no pun) so they really should strike out as the standard bearer of the hard left and have little to do with these losers. If they can get Sultana to switch to them that would be a significant act. She’s a grade A moron but may be a team player in the greens

Adnan Hussain's letter of 'resignation' in the header is quite interesting, as there's explicit reference to the derogatory way Muslim men have been spoken of and treated by others in YP. I really think the party is a non-starter, as there's such a huge gulf between the social attitudes of some in the 'Independent Alliance' and the woke, right-on lefties who have 'joined' (some of whom have already transferred to the Greens).

I wouldn't be surprised if Corbyn secretly wished he'd thrown his lot in with Polanski. He still could, of course.
  • I understand RedBird is abandoning its attempt to take control of the Telegraph. It will sell the business that it already owns but is unable to control because the government and regulators have not yet approved its ownership. This is a massive media story. It means either Paul Marshall - owner of the Spectator - or the Daily Mail
will end up in control of one of the UK’s best known newspaper groups.

It has been extraordinary to watch the Telegraph’s editorial team editorial team campaign against RedBird’s ownership, and its plans to expand the business internationally.

There is a risk to the government in RedBird pulling out, in that either Mail/Rothermere ownership or Marshall ownership would entrench the Telegraph’s opposition to Labour and support for Reform and the Tories.

Oh, I don't know. One of the most interesting history of tech papers I ever read was about riveting methods in the aircraft industry in IIRC the 1930s and 1940s. The introduction of new methods had an impact on weight and strength (and therefore again on weight) which was massive.

Against my better inclinations I watched QT for a bit last night, more in hope than expectations of Sultana putting up a decent show, unfortunately hopes and expectations were dashed. She’s not a supple or subtle thinker and reverts to slogans at the drop of a hat. Strangely there’s not much difference between what Sultana and Polanski are saying, but it shows you need something extra to front a party, or a movement as Zarah would no doubt say.

Hmm. The use of "fractional" for "factional" would work in Continental Europe, which is comfortable with words like "fraktion". But given that "fracking" involves the ground beneath your feet splitting under pressure, I can't help thinking it's the better word B)

The Act only applies to wearing the uniform of British forces and there’s a specific exemption for dramatic performances and enactments, as I detail above

Jonathan Carley, 64, was arrested at his home in Harlech on Friday after being accused of impersonating a rear admiral.

I am shocked to learn he was also educated at the University of Oxford, what an utter bounder.
He was *educating* people at Cheltenham College apparently. I say apparently advisedly. But it may be true. Ditto Oxford. But which college?
He also claimed to have gone to Harvard Business school but they have no records, also claimed he won a prestigious rowing race whilst there when he wouldn’t have even been in the US allegedly so an interesting character.
Odd the lack of records 'kept' by prestigious American Uni's .
    Data confidentiality maybe.

But for someone of the gent's age you would expect him to be in graduation lists in the newspapers, at least in the UK.

    What about actors ?
    “2
(1)It shall not be lawful for any person not serving in Her Majesty’s Military Forces to wear without Her Majesty’s permission the uniform of any of those forces, or any dress having the appearance or bearing any of the regimental or other distinctive marks of any such uniform: Provided that this enactment shall not prevent . . . . . . F1 any persons from wearing any uniform or dress in the course of a stage play performed in a place duly licensed or authorised for the public performance of stage plays, or in the course of a music hall or circus performance, or in the course of any bona fide military representation.”

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/57-58/45/section/2
I ask because I’m sure I saw something, although I cannot find a reference, that actor Tony Steedman had been done for impersonating a police officer.

Was visiting Bristol c. 1990 and walking across the Floating Harbour on the swing bridge near the (future) watery grave of Mr Colston's statue. I think an Armstrong job, given the 1870s date and its hydraulic operation.

They were repairing some of the rivets. One for one, using proper rivets - heated in fire and handed over to the riveters to swage with their hydraulic hammers. Never seen it before or since. Great stuff.

Not convinced Your Party has ever been much of a force.

The thread header I want to see is Breaking: Reform

I suspect we’ll get that one some point, more likely after the next election if Reform end up in government.
If Reform win the election it will be Breaking: Britain.
Who knows what Britain will be like. We have a party miles ahead in the polls with no real policies and no shadows of any ministerial post. They are, with every passing day, becoming a retirement home for failed Tories.

What do they stand for, apart from being NOTA. I’m trying to work it out and, unlike the centrist dad element here, I’m not reflexively hostile to them. At least with the Greens you know what they stand for.

The thing that I noticed most was that this is so common that there is actually a group dedicated to the hunting and [edit!} metaphorical suppression of such foilk,. who are known as Walts, and there is a whole section on ARRSE in amongst the sections dedicated to such things as green Mars Bars and the iniquities of contracting out recruitment to the corporate sector.
If you have Facebook read the Walter Mitty hunters page - there are some weird people - one guy pretending he is ex army intelligence and providing his services to films to guide on weapons and tactics etc and falling out with real soldiers on set “I can’t tell you what I did, official secrets” etc - even turned up at an HAC dinner in full Army Intelligence get up. They compile dossiers on these people and reach out to all their contacts in the SAS etc and get info and get lists checked.

Reports are that the black hole is £10bn less than forecast so no need to raise income tax rates.

But how will today's interest rate rise affect the numbers? Surely it will widen the black hole again.

And we are still 12 days from Budget so can the numbers still move - ie has OBR done final numbers or is there a further final revision still to come?

If there is a further revision, surely there could be trouble.

I know we progress but I do miss the old industrial heart of Brum.
I walked the Coventry canal a few years ago, past a GIANT factory building, which I now know was built as an arms factory, complete with giant lathes buried in the floor, and rail tracks running through the building for deliveries (the tracks still exist in places)

All of the canal bridges have holes in the parapets that have been patched. They were to allow the fire brigade to drop hoses into the water during the blitz.

Diving through Brum last weekend i noticed the same feature on one of their canal bridges

All economic statistics are rubbish. It is absurd that the budget and future direction of this great nation are held hostage to forecasters who may as well be plucking numbers from thin air, so wildly do their guesses fluctuate.

If Reeves had budgeted with a sensible safety margin then the entirely predictable fluctuations of a few £10bn here and there wouldn't affect her budget.

Jonathan Carley, 64, was arrested at his home in Harlech on Friday after being accused of impersonating a rear admiral.

I am shocked to learn he was also educated at the University of Oxford, what an utter bounder.
Thank heavens for that detail. For a moment I thought Welsh, retired teacher...
    He wasn't coughing, was he?

The moths were probably lured out by all the candles lit on yesterday's threads marking scale dog's birthday.

Ok, in quite interesting* but off topic posting, I had Dzus fasteners on my 748 but just thought it was a made up brand name. Turns out there was a Mr Dzus, he was Ukrainian and he revolutionised aircraft maintenance.

    https://fb.watch/DmMAhC7yvY/?

*I realise quite interesting is entirely subjective.

Oh, I don't know. One of the most interesting history of tech papers I ever read was about riveting methods in the aircraft industry in IIRC the 1930s and 1940s. The introduction of new methods had an impact on weight and strength (and therefore again on weight) which was massive.
    Sounds riveting !!

TBH I’d be fascinated by it too.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/3104204 possibly? Sorry, memory very faint.
One of the first things I did as an apprentice, 43 years ago, was pop riveting.

    I love engineering. I
At school we made garden trowels that were riveted together. Real rivets, with rivet sets and hammers. None of this new fangled pop river nonsense. Came in handy when restoring a Series II Landy

Great stuff.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Street_Bridge
I have been in the 'engine room' of the swing bridge in Newcastle. The bearings are from a WW1 gun turrent
This is the content I’m here for. I ruddy love that bridge. Crossed it loads of times. My mate, who’s a massive fan of Get Carter, came up from the Midlands for a weekend and his highlight was walking over that bridge (and up the stairs next to House of Tides).

When I first worked at Lucas in Brum at Gt King Street (not sure if @Mexicanpete will remember it, he’s same pedigree as me) there was a lathe from 1913.
I did my school work experience with Lucas Aerospace in Spring Road. Fun times.

Not noticed that. I’m back down there before Xmas and will have a look for it. I do like looking at the declining industrial heritage.

I’ve not walked the Cov canal but have part of the Stratford one as my Mom (sorry Luckyguy ) lives by it. When I lived in brum used to go down gas Street basin to the bars there. I also managed a few suppliers in the Black Country who backed onto the canals there.

Seen some of it as well. Thought she was very ranty whenever she spoke. Looked a sympathetic audience for her views too

We're at mid November, and is has barely got cold at all in the south. All sorts of plants in my garden have decided to have another go at flowering.

First day I've felt it noticeably cooler today further north, snow on higher ground. Been very mild and wet the past few weeks. I enjoy the cooler weather as the midges disappear
