Is Kemi the new IDS? – politicalbetting.com

Kemi Badenoch has told multiple interviews she gained a place at Stanford medical school – or pre-med – aged 16, but her parents couldn’t afford it even with a partial scholarship.I’ve spoken to Stanford admissions officers who say this is impossible https://t.co/7YLtKsyBOP

That's a good conspiracy theory. It is well constructed and verging on being plausible.

What are the current odds on Vance being president this year?
If it's all correct, then the White House are covering up medical problems (something entirely unprecedented in the history of US presidencies, of course), but Trump isn't necessarily going to imminently die or be permanently indisposed. There's a risk he'll drop dead, but we knew that anyway.

The Kemi thing, like the IDS one before it, is curious. What can possibly be achieved by making stuff like that up? Even if it were true no one would give a toss, yet the embarrassment is huge - possibly career threatening - if the lie comes to light. Odd.

I warned her in January that she needs to be more modest and self effacing.

I think it was the annoying croaky throat that did for IDS. I didn't even recall any CV controversy. But I do remember damn PMQs with him croaking like a toad all the way through it became like Japanese water torture in the end.

It's the sort of thing that might make cynical sense when trying to stand out on the candidates' list. Not true, not right, but it's a brutal scramble and politics doesn't have an HR department so who is going to check?

Keeping saying it once you are an MP, and then as a prominent MP... That's just dumb. I guess it's become part of who she understands herself to be. She could have been a doctor if it hadn't been for that terrible college. (Though I don't think that story entirely hangs together either.)

The more interesting question is why is this story here now. Those who want to topple Badenoch would want her to take the rap for the doomed 2026 elections... Wouldn't they?

One of the comments links the decline in Trump's health to the meeting with Putin in Alaska, which certainly takes the conspiratorial thinking up a notch, but is very plausible when it comes to Russia. Perhaps Vance is a more reliable Russian asset?

It's illegal to discuss matters relating to children, for example, given that this breaches their privacy. That's just one possibility. Very convenient of course for the Tories and their chums in the media.

Of course, there is the Putin explanation - he's been having some facial rejuvenation. Trump doesn't strike me as vain that way. He strikes me as vain, but not in the pursuit of tight skin and a defined jawline. But who knows.

Everyone assured us Putin was halfway to the pearly gates when he had just had some ott fillers injected.

I know Rochdale was unconvinced by the initial pics, but Trump was in and out of the golf course (including with his children) on both Saturday and Sunday and pottered around to the tennis courts on one day.

Are we saying there are no pictures or film of him at any of these junctures?

I thought the explanation is that she's no longer on the title deeds of the former marital home following the divorce settlement and therefore the new place in Brighton is her only property. The remaining question being whether she is liable for (and paying) council tax on the 'grace and favour' apartment in Admiralty House.

I suspect that the press running with the story know this and also that she is unable to rebut the story effectively because there is a court order protecting the childrens' privacy.

A brave reporter could ask "how many strokes today, sir?" after his round of golf.
They won't let anyone close enough to ask, which is one of the reasons I think something is probably going on. Trump loves the attention. Foregoing a chance to shoot his mouth off is not his style at all.

Umm, why are we randomly throwing things out of the window of the private residence at the White House this morning...?

    Looks like a bin bag

    How deliciously mysterious
Maybe Barron was about to have a room shakedown by his parents looking for contraband so lobbed his pornos, fags and booze in a bag and tossed it out the window. Yes, I think it’s that.
Don't be silly: that is Barron's love interest leaving in a hurry, rather than meeting the parents.

Oh, all 3 images from this weekend were 'produced' by the same photographer...

Berlusconi was also regularly under the surgeon's knife for face lifts and the like.

Yes, just in case I've closed my 2.7 lay (of a 2025 exit) out at 11. It would be a bizarre move imo but they could do it if they really wanted.
I think May, Johnson and Truss were all technically immune from challenges when they left. If the herd moves against you, rules be damned.

It would be a crazy thing to do, but the Conservatives are in a crazy state right now.
Well on the grounds of you should do what your enemy least wants ...

If they see Reform as their main enemy, go for Jenrick. If Labour, go for a centre ground non-populist.

Or maybe not. I'm struggling to read this new landscape if I'm honest.
I agree that reading the landscape is hard. That is because it is new, and we have had a familiar landscape more or less since 1945. Like so many post 1945 things, it's changing.

How I tentatively read it is this: In our system only two parties are in play for wining an election (325 seats). From 1945-2024 they were Labour and Tory - obvs, despite ups and downs and SDP and so on.

I suggest this is still true, and that those two parties are Labour and Reform; this remains true until it isn't.

The other change is this: Despite the rhetoric, from 1945-2024 both Lab and Con were in fact social democrat parties acting within the post WWII deal of welfare state, free stuff, pensions, NATO, high spend, high tax, they differed in competence and emphasis and vision but not (pace Mrs T) on the basics.

The change is that we do not know what sort of party Reform will be WRT the social democratic deal. I think they will in fact be high spend, high tax continuity social democrats + UK nationalism and closed borders. Others disagree.

The Tories are not currently in the race.

Yes I'm not usually a buyer of this sort of speculation but it looks like something is going on and that it's probably health related. Not a massive surprise really. Either that it's happening or that it's being hidden.

Divorce or custody related at a guess?
She is getting divorced and her new bloke is based in Brighton instead of up north.

I’ve a feeling that she’s done nothing wrong but the problem is you need to be whiter than white as a politician because any slight issue will be blown up in half stories
And especially a left wing politician. If you're one of those a bit of routine tax efficiency in your personal affairs can lead to accusations of 'hypocrisy'.
I don't think she's lax, I think there is a bit of the story (divorce) which both explains everything and the papers are avoiding talking about..

There was a bizarre part of the story that the house had been valued at the IHT threshold, but I cannot make head nor tail of it. Even if true, it looks like mere numerology.

There are three fascinating questions in ascending order of importance, all receiving insufficient attention so far:
How will Reform campaign and what will theur manifesto say
How will they govern in totality, especially on tax, spend, debt, deficit, welfare and all the things they won't want to talk about in advance; (and obvs migration)
What will happen after they have governed for a bit.

I enhanced the image. And seriously, can an expert explain what the hell is happening to his forehead? Right above his nose and right brow.

So it’s begun, the dehumanising of asylum seekers and let’s face it anyone of colour. When will the political class stand up to this overt xenophobia including this flag nonsense? Starmar is as weak as piss and let’s not talk even talk about the traitor Farage! One thing to note is that the people who make the biggest noise are the ones that need to look in the mirror and try to understand why they are so uneducated, bigoted and lazy.

verbal diarrhea, when you cannot argue your point , just shout racist, bigot , uneducated slob , etc. Tell us why you woudl want unlimited amopunts of people entering the country on a whim , illegally or then as "family members". You happy to put half a dozen up at your house and pick up their tab.

It’s really hard to believe such a catastrophe happened “by mistake”

I am now convinced we are heading for a quasi fascist government which will try to reverse this. And probably fail

And no, this does not please me. I wanted better for my kids 😢

Massive screw-up by your man Johnson after implementing your Brexit. The least you could do is get behind Labour (who you wisely voted for) as they try to fix it.
The Tories probably committed suicide when they did this. It’s hard to see how they can ever regain the trust of the British people. Hence the 15% in the polls

Labour are even worse, of course
Except they're not. They're risking their left flank to say and do things to allay the concerns of people who are not their natural bedfellows. It's real One Nation stuff.

It was entirely predictable that if we scared off all eu migrant labour by brexiting then we would end up shipping in middle eastern and south asian alternatives.
No it fecking wasn’t. And certainly not on this scale

The Tories simply betrayed the people. I’m pretty sure half of them did it deliberately and the others were too dumb to realise

    Good riddance to them

If I what I honestly fear for Britain comes true, they should count themselves lucky if they stay out of jail

Immigration helps to increase growth in terms of GDP. I can’t see why else they would have issued so many visas .

Rank incompetence, starting with not checking how much immigration the Australian system actually allowed.
    On this scale?

They were either colossally malignant or colossally stupid. Or both

Boris and Co will also have to face trial along with all the judges, lawyers etc
I have zero time for Bozo and co but your remedy is something you’d expect in a third world cesspit. As to what judges and lawyers have to do with things , this is peak authoritarianism , something which you seemed to rail against in your previous grief laden post !

    Phase one is done

I can't believe that they originally intended to become the most despised new party government in the fastest ever time as part of phase one, but I can't think of much else they've done

    Phase two has begun

I strongly suspect that it'll be even worse than the first phase

Phase two has, excitingly, begun with gilt yields surging again

    The iceberg floats directly ahead
Not sure "surge" is fair. Tiny uplift.

The Tories used it to inflate the growth figures . GDP per capita has been flatlining for years .

I think we forget just how tight the labour market was after COVID. Loads of people in service type jobs (bartenders etc) went into education or starting coding (or Onlyfans), EU migration dried up and the economy was genuinely in a spot of bother because of the lack of cheap labour on which it has depended for so long.

Now, I'd normally welcome such a change because it would help reduce in-work poverty and stimulate investment in capital. Basically, your Wetherspoons would have a machine pouring your pint rather than a human, because humans were really expensive. But it was an incredibly rapid change and there are some sectors like social care where people were simply unwilling to stump up the cash to incentivise people to work in that sector.

So all these minimum-wage sectors went squealing to the Treasury, and here we are: productivity growth remains stagnant, we continue to have vast inequality and in-work poverty, and people are rather upset because of housing and public service pressure from a gigantic influx of people in just a couple of years.
