That’s it. My micro sympathy for Starmer has gone. He’s a repulsive traitor getting the support of an American lunatic
Fuck them all
Though it now becomes Trump's problem to preserve the military base there, he won't let Mauritius remove it
So...we are paying a mountain of cash so the US can keep its base there?
Eh?
Yeh, just run that past me???!!!! US no longer a reliable ally, indeed seems close to forging a new alliance of autocratic maniacs with Russia and we pay out £ for them to have a base.
Another alleged XL bully attacks kills a 19 year old woman in Bristol .
These dogs should be rounded up and put down without delay .
Well said
Incredibly, the one newspaper that is seriously campaigning to “save these dogs” and repeal the XL Bully law is…. The Guardian
Yes
They run about an article a month saying the law is bad and wrong - then about a fortnight later they have to run a sheepish news item admitting the dogs have killed again
wtf? I pride myself on working out editorial slants esp when they are confounding but this one is bizarre, i mean XL bully owners are not guardian readers
Il down to
1. The editor herself owns one of these hellhounds
2. The guardian is secretly financed by the RSPCA (which has itself been captured by people that hate breed specific laws)
Any other ideas?
The other idea might be that The Graun is not actively campaigning to “save these dogs” and that you have in fact done a Trump there: Don't like the facts? Well, make up some you do like.
So far all looks good with the visit . No signs of behaviour from Trump to justify some of the hysterical rantings on PB. He's not my cup of tea but if he can bring a quick peace in Ukraine and maybe elsewhere - maybe there's method in his madness.
Why do we want a quick peace in Ukraine ?
So we can stop all those bloody planes crashing on the RoC border?

Saying no might inconvenience someone in the Foreign Office.
"U.S. service members who are transgender or otherwise exhibit gender dysphoria are prohibited from military service unless they obtain an exemption, according to an internal Pentagon memo.
The memo, revealed in a court filing on Wednesday night, details the Trump administration's new policy regarding transgender individuals. The policy notes that such service members "may be considered for a waiver on a case-by-case basis, provided there is a compelling Government interest."'
That'll give people an easy out if the USA ever needs to introduce conscription.
The last figure I saw was that this would affect 10-20,000 service people.
(That's out of around 1.3 million - not sure how accurate I think the number is.)
Around 1%? That's the right order of magnitude. UK is about 0.5% for the general population. And the 1.3M divisor is a predominantly young adult population, so you'd expect a somewhat higher percentage in the armed forces than in the UK population as a whole, making the match quite good.
Trump says he will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports to the US and confirms he will go ahead with 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports from next week as neither nation had done enough on border security and drug trafficking to merit further suspension of them. Trump also says 25% tariffs on EU imports will be coming 'soon.'
So the great global trade war of 2025 is now underway, albeit as Starmer visits Trump in DC the UK is not being targeted specifically yet

Imagine France paying a third party for the right for the US to host a base on one of its colonial possessions.
The blatant treachery of it melts my brain. As does the obvious fact some people somewhere are making fraudulent millions out of this deal and the poor British taxpayer will have to fund it all. To give away possessions
Personally I think the bit where Mauritius is in bed with China not India, was massively over sold. The China way, what they have been doing, is sneaking the most innocent looking Sri Lankan fishing vessels with spy equipment on, in as close to the island as possible. Although we have intercepted these vessels, got the equipment, know it’s the Chinese behind it - it’s not the stuff governments often put in the newspapers or discuss openly in House of Commons. I reckon the game will carry on much like that for the time being.
The whole point of the Chagos deal is that British Indian Ocean Territory becomes Indian Ocean Territory, is why US and India have negotiated it for us to sign, and both Biden and Trump more than happy to sign it off.
It is going to get worse for Labour. Trump and Musk are so going to butt-**** Starmer in half an hour. I am half expecting Andy Tate to be declared Prime Minister whilst Starmer is arrested for treason.
On the other hand, in other news, what is Suella on? She can be whatever she wants. If she doesn't want to be English/British, so be it, but she has no right to imply any of the England football team, past and present, that they aren't English. I am sure she sees some racist point scoring win in amongst her peculiar narrative. Silly woman.
Nah.
Trump/Musk approval ratings in the UK are dire. People might be supremely disappointed in Starmer, but the loathing some PBers feel for him is unusual. The contrast of the (relatively) benign Starmer with the grostesque US administration can only help him.
The comments on the BBC demonstrate the appetite for a Love Actually moment. People are aghast at the way Canada has been treated, and despite some of the clever economics chat on here, would support the PM if we responded in kind.
For sure. As soon as the US turned on Canada and Mexico, I decided to cut loose from my financial commitments to the US. Netflix, AppleTV, Paramount, all cancelled. Amazon Prime scheduled to stop in the autumn. No more Californian Pinot from Virgin Wines or Alaskan salmon from Waitrose. Not using Amazon at all is the tough one - the time and hassle it takes to try and buy the same stuff from domestic online suppliers, compared to the easy click and buy from Amazon, is remarkable. But I will do my best. The big question is my already booked trip to the US for 2026, which I may have to re-envisage as a mostly Canadian road trip.
It’s our 40th wedding anniversary this year and my wife is overdue a medal for good conduct and long suffering. We both have an interest in American history and had planned a trip to Washington and the civil war battle sites as a special treat.

His imposing tariffs on Chinese, Canadian and Mexican and EU nations from next month leading to the biggest trade war in 100 years will be interesting.
I still see no evidence the Ukraine and Russia can agree terms and Gaza may have a ceasefire but Trump's holiday resort plan is unlikely to satisfy the Gazans.
He has carrying out his deportations of immigrants and removal of trans from the military but liberals won't be fans of that either

To be fair you did vote for Starmer, an ex Human Rights lawyer ashamed of our colonial past, so it is not surprising he is giving the Chagos Islands up (only surprise is he isn't trying to resettle Chagossians there too)

I suggest you postpone it for a year or two, then you might be able to get to encounter the second civil war in person.
Guardian quoting King Charles III letter to Trump thus:
I can only say that it would be … pleasure to extend that invitation once again, in the hope that you … some stage be visiting Turnberry and a detour to a relatively near neighbour might not cause you too much inconvenience. An alternative might perhaps be for you to visit Balmoral …
There is much on both estates which I think you might find interesting, and enjoy – particularly as my foundation at Dumfries House provides hospitality skills-training for young people who often end up as staff on your own establishments!
Quite apart from this presenting an opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, it would also offer a valuable chance to plan a historic second state visit to the United Kingdom.
As you will know this is unprecedented by a US president. That is why I would find it helpful for us to be able to discuss, together, a range of options for location and programme content.
In so doing, working together, I know we will further enhance the special relationship between our two countries of which we are both so proud.

Save the American visit for the 50th.
Rather more to the Civil Wars of the Islands than that. Dunbar, Launceston, Culloden, Newburn, Worcester, Killiecrankie, Newark, Lyme Regis, the Irish sites, Stow on the Wold, etc. etc. all spring to mind. At least DavidL's ticked off the siege of Dundee.

It's fascinating the difference between Trump's and Musk's views of the UK and Starmer.
I'm not sure it'll have any impact on Trump's decision making. But at this stage we can only say it's better for the UK specifically than the alternative.

Indeed.
But it seems odd how little known the battlefields of Britain are.
I've never been to those of Marston Moor, Towton or Stamford Bridge even though I must have been within a few miles of them hundreds of times.
Well that's something I can remedy when the weather improves.

Trump asks Starmer if the UK could take on Russia on its own
He is right, we couldn't militarily (though economically maybe) which is why all European NATO nations and Canada must work together to contain Putin
Why should we bother to contain him if America is no longer interested? They were the ones who made it their business to poke him in the first place (yes, I know he shouldn't have launched an illegal and bloody invasion in response), now they're busy making friends with him and Europe is supposed to still be bitter enemies and shun Russia's cheap gas in favour of the American imported variety? Ummm, why?

Brutal, but also shows the depths of Trump's ignorance. He ought to have at least a vague idea about this sort of stuff, but then again he apparently didn't know that the UK had nuclear weapons. Frankly I do wonder if he could find us on a map.

As we are on the same continent as he is and America aren't? The US are more focused on containing China than Russia now, militarily as well as economically

Yes, just seen. Dispiriting. It's not the way to go imo. I don't make a meal of being a patriot but I am. We shouldn't grovel like this.
You were absolutely fine with the grovelling when Joe Biden was making Sunak look like a tit on the tarmac at the airport and boasting about 'stopping the Brits screwing around'. But apparently you hate the grovelling when someone has actually been fairly nice to Starmer (goodness only knows why). That's crude politics not patriotism.

There is a UK submarine ready to do just that.
(Though that would not have been a sensible response from Starmer, in the circumstances).
Which could at most destroy Moscow and maybe St Petersburg while Putin wipes out the whole UK (and even with the French nukes only a few Russian cities more).
Only the US has enough nukes to wipe out pretty much all of Russia

Brutal, but also shows the depths of Trump's ignorance. He ought to have at least a vague idea about this sort of stuff, but then again he apparently didn't know that the UK had nuclear weapons. Frankly I do wonder if he could find us on a map.
Imagine France paying a third party for the right for the US to host a base on one of its colonial possessions.
The blatant treachery of it melts my brain. As does the obvious fact some people somewhere are making fraudulent millions out of this deal and the poor British taxpayer will have to fund it all. To give away possessions
I yearn to forget that I was ever British
Most people really don't care about this issue and Trump seems to have ok'd the deal so really don't see what the fuss is about..in a few years people will barely be able to remember this as as a quiz question..😏
🇺🇸🇬🇧 It seems that the union flag is flying upside down outside Blair House - the presidential guesthouse opposite the White House where PM Starmer is staying for his visit.
National humiliation number one in a series of 12.
I wonder if the option of not going was considered.
No, and the daft bastard has invited Trump, his wife and his diapers to Windsor Castle for a state visit.
Does Starmer bear a grudge against Charles ?
KC has invited the President for another visit, in Scotland, dropping in en passant at Balmoral as one does, to plan everything properly for the big one, fide Graun feed.
"PA Media has released extracts from King Charles’ letter to President Trump. Trump displayed the letter for the cameras, and so some of the wording was visible.
In the letter, the king invited the president to meet him in Scotland, either at Dumfries House or Balmoral, which are near Trump’s golf courses, ahead of a former state visit."
Trump is half Scottish ancestry of course
That is defamatory. I am sure he was Irish and German. I am deeply offended.
“They don’t need much help” — Trump on if he’d help Britain if British soldiers are attacked by Russia in Ukraine
If anybody at the back hasn't yet figured it out by now NATO is defunct. The US is signalling that they will not support European NATO members.
Given the earlier comments on Taiwan as well it's now clear that any nation that relied on military support from the US needs to immediately take action to replace US capabilities.
It's all but certain now that other countries will pursue nuclear weapons development at pace, the US nuclear umbrella is a mirage.
Ummm, why?
As we are on the same continent as he is and America aren't? The US are more focused on containing China than Russia now, militarily as well as economically
So? Why should we continue to hold someone else's grudges if they're not even holding them any more?
It's as stupid as paying for another country to have a military base for the next 99 years.
The letter was signed: “Yours Most Sincerely, Charles.”
Sounds like it's hitting the right tone.
Looks like a lot of the fears about Charles were wrong. Taking the Chief Diplomat role seriously.
(To what extent does he have to juggle Canadian/UK interests?)
Why not? One king to another. Mano a Mano as it were...

Not entirely sure he can find his own arse without a map. Or even with one come to that. Macron and now Starmer are being nauseously obsequious. We really shouldn’t.

He can certainly find his golf courses in Scotland

To take it one step further who is the most likely aggressor against the UK?
Which country has intermeshed financial interests that their oligarchs want to assert total control over? Which country has the power to really threaten us?
Russia is not the only global power we need to be able to stand up against.

We need a bigger nuclear arsenal and tactical nukes as well. And let the old people die and drive the asylum seekers back whence they came, we can’t afford them

I'm hoping we will renege. No Government can bind its successor. It won't affect America - they're hardly going to be asked to leave.

This is different level. If you're not bothered about it, I can't help you.

Trump asks Starmer if the UK could take on Russia on its own
Well, we held off the vast mass of the Nazi military might until the Americans got their shit together...
Yes, and America became the dominant power of the 20th century because of their stance, and we became the sick man of Europe because of ours.
Next time round, I'll take the American option - they don't seem terribly ashamed of their war records.
When I was a kid the standard belief was that the US acknowledged that they had been late for the last 2 world wars but would make it up in the next one.

What has invading Russia got to do with it? What I am saying is why would we not quickly de-escalate and normalise trade with Russia, if America, who is the driving force behind all our major foreign policy decisions, is going to normalise their own relations with Russia. We deal with plenty of other horrible people quite happily because it suits us.

It is the same thing without the sugar coating.
I certainly am bothered about it - I have been the only one bothered about it on PB for many years. Your lot are the Johnny Come Latelys who are suddenly realising it wasn't such a topping wheeze to give up our national autonomy.

Most of Russia is uninhabited. The UK and France have the ability to destroy the main population centres.

A plane crashes on the Ukraine/Republic of China border. Which side do you bury the survivors?
Plane crashes? What plane crashes?
[nudge, nudge, wink, wink!]
Are you happy to save Russian lives this year if it means British lives are lost in five years time ?
But UK said yes we will do it on basis of buying weapons at mates rates discount from US.
And that’s how UK got into this thing in the first place, more than sixty years ago.
I imagined it.
What now?
Léon L'Insupportable.
I yearn to forget that I was ever British
I reckon the game will carry on much like that for the time being.
The whole point of the Chagos deal is that British Indian Ocean Territory becomes Indian Ocean Territory, is why US and India have negotiated it for us to sign, and both Biden and Trump more than happy to sign it off.
Are you saying I should rethink this?
I still see no evidence the Ukraine and Russia can agree terms and Gaza may have a ceasefire but Trump's holiday resort plan is unlikely to satisfy the Gazans.
He has carrying out his deportations of immigrants and removal of trans from the military but liberals won't be fans of that either

Save the American visit for the 50th.
I'm not sure it'll have any impact on Trump's decision making. But at this stage we can only say it's better for the UK specifically than the alternative.
(To what extent does he have to juggle Canadian/UK interests?)
The special relationship involves rimming obviously.

But it seems odd how little known the battlefields of Britain are.
I've never been to those of Marston Moor, Towton or Stamford Bridge even though I must have been within a few miles of them hundreds of times.
Well that's something I can remedy when the weather improves.
The Windsors tend to set a good example when it comes to access rights in the Cairngorms, to be fair. If you turn up with an ice axe and crampons the staff will go out of their way to accommodate.
