Ukraine's somewhere that I've never been, so I hesitate to ask a silly question - but wouldn't it make sense to split in the same way as Schleswig-Holstein split up, with referenda in each town on which way they want to go? The western half really wants to be part of the EU, or as close as possible. The eastern half apparently really wants to be part of Russia. Yes, I know it's a historic unity - but really, is it still united in any meaningful sense?
Young men no longer the biggest risk of suicide as figures show rates among generation born in the 1950s and 1960s higher than any other section of the population"
Nick palmer - I believe the Ukraine/Russia border was moved eastwards in the time of the Soviet Union. So what is now eastern Ukraine would then have been considered Russia. According to the CIA only 20% of the population is Russian. Whether that's entirely accurate I don't know.
I doubt even Clegg could lose Sheffield Hallam but long term the constituency is clearly movings leftwards, or certainly has been over the last 30 years. The Tories don't seem to have any hope of winning there in the near future (their vote share has fallen at every election since 1979) and it must be one of the few places where Labour's vote share was higher in 2010 than in 1997.
Labour are well within their rights to go after Clegg - although calling it a decapitation strategy would surely backfire. Their chances will be better in 2020 I suspect.
"The geographic caste of suicide underlines the communitarian argument made by Emile Durkheim in his classic work, Suicide. Durkheim stressed that men (note that men kill themselves at much higher rates than do women) are more likely to commit suicide when they get disconnected from society's core institutions (e.g., marriage, religion) or when their economic prospects take a dive (e.g., unemployment). So, men are more likely to thrive and survive when they have a job, a wife, and a community connection to a church or some other group that grounds their lives.
And over the last two decades, it's men without college degrees who have ended up most disconnected from the core institutions of work, marriage, and civil society. Guess who is most likely to kill themselves? Men without college degrees. In fact, according to recent research by sociologist Julie Phillips and her colleagues, suicide has surged in recent years (this research covers the period up to 2005) among precisely this group of less-educated middle-aged men, even as suicide remained essentially stable among middle-aged men with college degrees over this period."
I'm getting worried for Osborne. People have short memories, and he's starting to make this economic management thing look just too easy. Widespread public complacency could let Balls in by the back door. I never thought things could be too perfect, but Osborne looks as if he's getting there.
Pride cometh before a fall.
"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." - Proverbs 16:18.

The last time Ukraine was split administratively, it looked like this:
"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." - Proverbs 16:18.
we'll have to have a new Gove translation after Scottish Independence as these words clearly belong to the Scots. Gove's civil servants will be unable to recommend a bible union.
UK politics particularly Labour is becoming hereditary, Benn, Prescott, Blair, Kinnock, Vas, to name just a few off the top of my head, then you have the married couples, Balls, Dromey, to make sure the gravy train is kept nice and tightly controlled.
Quite right. Apparently there are still some of these "hereditary" politicians in the House of Lords. Worse yet the position of King/Queen is hereditary too.

Have I read this right? A mother has lost custody of her children, aged 11 and 14, for leaving them to their own devices for "up to three hours"? It might have made sense if they were aged 1 and 4:

I shall examine the Stations of the Cross next time I'm in the cathedral. But, this much is clear: Gill's Ariel and Prospero gives me the creeps.
