National selector James Whitaker said after the announcement: "Both Moeen and Stephen have been very consistent performers for Worcestershire and Lancashire and both counties and their coaching staffs must take credit for their continued progress and Harry Gurney brings some variety to the tour party.

"England have won the ICC World Twenty20 before - in 2010 in the Caribbean - and this group has an exciting mix of youth and experience and I am sure with good preparation, desire and determination they will be able to produce an exciting brand of cricket."

    Caribbean tour party: S Broad, E Morgan, M Ali, R Bopara, T Bresnan, J Buttler, J Dernbach, H Gurney, A Hales, C Jordan, M Lumb, S Parry, J Root, B Stokes, J Tredwell, L Wright

Good to see some of our 'Dudes' in action in the show-off stuff at Sochi!

Hopefully the media will lay off the whole gay thing for the next two weeks . I personally think its incredibly rude to whinge and protest at the host just because they have a different law regarding homosexuality than ours - Its not as if Russia even bans homosexuality but just does not like to talk about it. Plenty of countries ban homosexuality including a fair few where the death penalty is used

Interesting fact - only three hotels in Bangkok regularly charge more than £130 a night: Four Seasons, Peninsular, Siam.

    Should ruffle a few feathers

    Dan Hodges ‏@DPJHodges 1m

Tory lead on economy is becoming too wide for Labour to have realistic hope in 2015. They have to narrow that gap.

The most interesting thing in the above polls for me is the movement in the lib dem switchers.

It seems quite a few lib dems have switched to UKIP, and some have even switched to the tories.

Yes but Russia has the temerity to not like gays and be mostly white - hence why they get it in the neck.

It turns out to be, "It's very unfair of Labour to call the by-election quickly and let people vote straight away instead of faffing around for a bit, which disadvantages parties like mine that don't have any organization there because we hadn't taken any notice of the place until their MP died."

I like the old train liveries but not sure a free market party should be forcing exact artwork on companies ! Sometimes UKIP have a mentality of imagining a perfect world and then trying to ban or make laws to achieve it however impractical or un- liberal.

UKIP's call for the foreign aid budget to be redirected to UK flood relief seems to be a popular one.

The Daily Mail's article has 1200 "shares" (which I seem to recall SeanT saying is the key metric).

Ridiculous decision re Pietersen. Not only is he needed as potentially our best batsman in all 3 forms of the game but he is the one everyone puts down their paper or delays going to the bar to watch when he comes out to bat. IF he did cause a bit of tension in the camp then maybe the others needed to have their cosy world ruffled given the recent results

    Why is it tricky?

Girls believed to be at risk need to be examined by doctors and the parents or guardians of any child subjected to FGM should be be presumed to be responsible without any witness testimony being necessary. It's the job of parents/guardians to ensure their children are not subjected to FGM. Saying "it wasn't my fault" should be no defence.

Assuming an Indian aid budget of 300 million quid a year, and an Indian population of 1 billion, that works out at an eye-watering.... 30p - 30 PENCE - per Indian per year!

The only bits I disagree with are some of the polling numbers. I think Labour will almost certainly cap out at 35%, and get no higher. The question is whether Cameron can push it up to 38-39% - I'm saying that perhaps there is a chance of that happening through a late swing/surge, that perhaps we're overlooking.

I don't share your confidence (which seems to exist among many on here) that Labour will fall significantly from its current number. Judging the future through the prism of the past is the quickest way to the poorhouse.

I'm also not convinced about the popularity of the "left wing" ideals by the 80s. There was a considerable sense that by 1979 the Butskellite post-war consensus had failed and that something new was needed to manage the changing society. Oddly enough, it's easy to argue on that basis not how much Thatcher changed but how little in some areas.

Technological innovation along with economic liberalisation and the end of the Cold War were the three major developments of the 80s and it was perhaps Labour's failure to recognise these developments for what they were which cost it the 1992 election. A British equivalent of Clinton from the centre-left would, I argue, have won in 1992 against John Major.

As to the differences between the two main parties, both are, I would contend, as we all are, the sum of our contradictions. In some areas, the Coalition is being very radical, in others it has accepted the Major/Blair post-Cold War Social Democratic model. It may well be that apart from one or two areas, the differences between the Conservative and Labour Manifestos in 2015 will be more symbolic and semantic than actual and meaningful.

I said I thought Labour would cap out at 35% and will actually poll between 32-34%. I don't think this is a massive fall from where they are now, but it is a fall from the 37-39% level, I grant you. Second, I am not judging next year on the events of the past - I'm merely making a comparison with similar factors to 1992. I personally have a four-figure sum riding on the outcome so I couldn't afford wishful thinking, even if I wanted to.

We may have to agree to disagree on some of the other points. It's clear in hindsight the postwar consensus wasn't working; I seem to remember a lot of debate at the time and a polarised nation. There are several social attitude surveys from the 80s that provide evidence for the views and prejudices at the time and the 'battle' for economic liberalism was not won until fairly near the end.

On your final point, I disagree that the differences between the parties are cosmetic. I would also argue that Labour has failed to appreciate the scale of the challenges facing our economic future and, furthermore, are still partly in denial about the seriousness of the deficit.

  • For me arguing over foreign aid is a bit like arguing over the stationery bill in a large company. Yes their is some waste and pilferage but its miniscule compared to other spending (and waste and fraud)- UKIP are on better ground when they moan about the EU contributions or CAP

Agreed, and that key point is why the Labour party under the Leadership of Ed Miliband and Ed Balls will not win the next GE.
