How exactly is Europe not buying Russian gas 'Russia sending Europe into recession'?
If either Europe reduces Russian gas consumption or the Russians reduce supply, then substantial chunks of European industrial production will have to stop/be reduced so that people can have heating and light.
Russia has already massively reduced the flow of gas.

Nuclear seems beloved and heralded as the answer by all across the political spectrum - I really don't see why, especially given recent situations in Ukraine.
Why, are you expecting a Russian invasion of Hinkley Point ?
One of the nice thing about nuclear power is that we can offer heating-for-life to millions of Russians (and other annoying people).

Is Lord Frost really so ignorant that he thinks nuclear power is implicated in climate change? Presumable because it generates heat??
Frighteningly stupid.
In the article, Frost is very pro nuclear.
Yes, actually having just looked at the report, I think it was a frighteningly stupid news soundbite, which gave the impression he was backing nuclear on the basis that there was no evidence of climate change.
In fact, he is backing increasing what he calls "carbon-efficient" forms on energy, rather than limiting power consumption. In fact he says nothing about cutting down on wind power. Though why he thinks fracking is "carbon-efficient" I don't know: https://policyexchange.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/V6-Holy-Illusions.pdf

I was vaguely hoping that these zanies from the early Boris era were shuffling out of history, but with Truss is seems they're back with a vengeance. Is the return of Dom imminent? Surely he wouldn't work under 'crackers' lady and she wouldn't appoint, but who knows?
She is continuity Johnson.
Two more years of this clown show. God knows what the country will be like when they've finished.
Posters claiming that “1980 wasn’t so bad” are truly the pits.
If folks like it so much, they might try emigrating to somewhere with 1980 levels of income. Romania perhaps.
I would rather live in 1980 than today. The music was better.
Thing is, your brain will retain the goods bits of that and forget the crud bits.
Reality: queuing for cash in banks twice a week, people smoking in offices, pubs, trains and restaurants, and everywhere else, a far more conformist and hierarchical office culture - often by class, poor cars by modern standards that rust in 2-3 years, ordering anything by mail order taking 28 days (at least) with a far more limited range available, more pubs but crap food in them, maybe a Berni Inn was half-acceptable, four channels (if that), no PCs, no internet for this.. strikes, communist agitation, a nasty recession etc..
I like Gary Numan too, but still keen?
Yes, and this is a point Thatcher fans keep missing, which is that for all sorts of reasons that had nothing to do with the government, life just got better in the 1980s.
Cars stopped rusting as soon as they drove off the forecourt, and developments like anti-lock brakes and electric windows would trickle down car ranges.
Banks would give us proper ATM cards, replacing the ones that would be swallowed on each withdrawal and posted back to you. Credit cards were given to the masses.
Computers would invade the home and the office (which were separate places back then). Hi-fi, VCRs and colour televisions were affordable.
Foreign holidays would become an option for most, not just the jet set.
Not so much fun for Maggie's millions; I'll grant you that.
Maggie's millions got to buy their council houses they'd effectively been buying for decades. And they loved her for it.
Renting is not effectively buying. Selling £10 notes for £5 is often popular with shoppers

Considering wind power is the cheapest form of energy, I think it will be appealing to nobody sane.
If wind is the cheapest form of energy, and we have a lot of wind energy (on the verge of green superpowerdom blah blah blah) then why, pray, is energy so expensive?
Everybody knows why energy is expensive. Its because the green lobby has over decades bust a gut absolutely everywhere to stop, hinder or restrict hydrocarbon investment and development. That's f8cking why.

Obviously I find separating my own deep dislike of Trump from analysing the situation to be very difficult, but I remain genuinely baffled how personalised the politics seems to have become, how focused on Trump himself as requiring such intense individual loyalty from what always seemed a very independent minded, disparate national politics.
I know he is, regrettably, a charismatic force, but the intensity of personal support he gets from elected figures even before he is the candidate seems most odd. This is not the sort of thing that is just standing up for one of their own.

There's a rational argument in there somewhere. But there is no excuse for stupidity or for weaponising the stupidity of others. Do you see much force in the claim that wind energy is medieval?

How is he planning on persuading energy companies to drill for gas in the UK? There is this slightly naïve view, that there are massive - easy to extract - gas reserves in the UK, and you merely need to mutter the word "fracking" and the natural gas with flow.
The reality - and I speak as a man who lost a lot of money in Igas - is that the wells and core samples have been very disappointing. Yes, there's gas. But it's nowhere near as abundant or technically easy as the best US shale plays.
Now, the UK government could massively subsidise its extraction - and there's an energy security case for that - but what if the price for imported Australian LNG is $6/mmbtu, and the price of Blackpool natural gas is $30? That's paying an awful lot for security of supply.
The problem with Liz Truss' and her tax cuts is she keeps (deliberately?) conflating two outcomes. Firstly, to encourage growth in the economy. This is entirely plausible. And secondly, and in tandem, to help with the CofL crisis. This is unarguably true. But it does nowt at all in the immediate term for those most in need of help. So she's always answering a subtly different question to the one being asked.
Here is my carefully considered insight:
Liz doesn't get it!
I think it's highly likely that in the event that energy prices rise as high as is currently predicted, the Government will step in with some form of assistance. At the moment, we don't know exactly what will happen, so it seems fair not to have a totally fleshed out policy of what that assistance will be.
On a related note, I think it would probably be a good idea to decouple any cash grant from energy - ie. people don't have to use it to purchase energy. Otherwise it's a pure bung to energy companies. It will save energy, because those who prefer an extra jumper and to spend it on food etc., will be able to do so.
Yeah. It needs to discourage use as much as possible. I never quite got why a flat £400 was chosen? It goes to everyone equally. Billionaires, second and third home owners. And single folk like me with a tiny energy efficient flat, which will cover the leccy entirely. Surely a %age discount off everyone's bills would have been just as easy to administer? And encourage lower use? Combined with a bung to the lowest paid? Of course. As matt w notes. They could always change the cap as well.
I may have argued it previously.
I would bear down on the cap (even fix it at the current level, or with a small increase), which would have a beneficial side effect of clobbering retail inflation quite significantly. And being clear political communication.
Then offer supply-side support to keep companies above water where necessary. I'm quite tempted by a low interest rate (eg base rate or base + 1%) borrowing facility against assets to be paid back over 5 years.
I'm not sure if we can buck world prices without upsetting our international contract arrangements. Though a levy or further windfall tax is perhaps attractive.
The things confusing in the windfall tax is that media-idiots are failing to report existing measures such as higher taxes for the sector, and a windfall tax already having happened, and slinging mud at companies on the basis of worldwide profits.
And it goes without saying that insulation programmes etc should have been beefed up and driven harder 18 months ago, but Big Chief Sitting Bullshitter Boris sat on his butt.
This is spot on - especially your point about bucking world prices.
Ultimately, about 10% has been taken out of world natural gas exports. That pain is going to be shared among importers. And while Germany and the EU is particularly vulnerable because it is (largely) their 10%, we are also badly impacted because we're big importers of spot LNG cargoes.
Ultimately, demand has to drop to match the drop in world exports. And we are going to have to take a share of that.
The easiest short term way to alleviate the issue is to see if we can encourage more coal... the problem is that the price of seaborne coal has increased by just as much as natural gas.

Months ago, I argued that the accumulation of all these legal problems would erode his popularity with Republicans, bit by bit -- and I think we can see that happening. Moreover, if, as seems likely, his antics cause the Republicans to lose ground in the Senate this November, some Republicans are likely to turn against him because he is a loser.
And yet today Republican politicians, his rivals for 24 included are rushing to express their fealty and value supporting him above the rule of law, the FBI and even the whole federal nature of the USA.
It's a cult. A proto-fascist cult and it will destroy America if he is allowed to run and win again.
The former president has discovered a new test of power: using his own misconduct to compel party leaders to rally to him. One by one, they have executed the ritual of submission: Kevin McCarthy, Marco Rubio, even the would-be Trump replacer Ron DeSantis. Maybe they’re inwardly hoping the FBI will do for them what they are too weak and frightened to do for themselves.
Notably, this is something that Boris singularly failed to manage in the end - the MPs simply got fed up with eternally pledging loyalty when the next scandal popped up which they were expected to just eat.
Sounds like their Neptune anti-ship missiles, which as described have both the range and the ground attack capability.
https://twitter.com/mattia_n/status/1557016814986661895 The Ukrainian military official with knowledge of the situation said that Ukrainian forces were behind the explosion but would not disclose the type of weapon used in the attack, saying only that “a device exclusively of Ukrainian manufacture was used.”
Could be. Some claims that the Ukrainians seriously degraded Russian air defence recently, which would increase the chance of missiles making it to their target.
Neptune seems to be quite a nice missile.
Should we buy some?
{BAe achieves fusion at room temperature}
We do have a tripartite military and economic alliance with Ukraine and Poland. A lot of potential for that.

That is not new, he used that test of power from the start - many of those who used to criticise things he said or did have, since he was first elected, gone on to defend much much worse statements and actions. They'd not even blink at some of the things they previously condemned.
"Ex-Cabinet minister Lord Frost says there is no evidence world is facing ‘a climate emergency’ and Britain should end focus on ‘medieval’ wind power and go all in for nuclear and fracking
He calls change of tack with greater emphasis on fracking and nuclear power Tory peer backs Liz Truss for PM - with claims he may soon return to Government"

"No evidence world faces climate emergency"?
What other than the gazillion tons of evidence from scientists all around the world for decades now.
The bloke is a world class clown.
He needs a sit down with Telegraph's AEP who will patiently explain to him that we are on the threshold of being a world power in wind thanks to the N Sea Dogger Bank projects. Gigawatts of the stuff.
We must all pray that this idiot doesn't get the business or energy brief in Truss's fiasco administration.
People keep reading about how we are on the verge of green superpowerdom - as the government plans for rationing and shutdowns over the winter.
Voters experiences are far, far removed from the paradise situation you and many on here describe. And you have no explanation as to why that is. Not really.
You must therefore expect the Lord Frosts of this world to come in and seize the initiative before everybody f8cking freezes.
There's a rational argument in there somewhere. But there is no excuse for stupidity or for weaponising the stupidity of others. Do you see much force in the claim that wind energy is medieval?
No that's overstating the case. If we can develop ways of saving large amounts of renewables for cold dry calm winter days (and nights) its the best solution. And there are some great ideas.
Right now, we can't. Sorry. These industries are in their infancy. Its like expecting a fleet of Stevenson's Rockets to power a modern railway service.

What do you mean by the "Lord Frosts of this world"?
That's a 3 month old graph from John Burn-Murdoch in the FT, who is shockingly poor in his handling of data. Here he is debunked in the FT comments.
In this case he does not even adequately define what he means by "Out of Pocket Spending" in the US and UK, nor explain why has excluded the pay packet contributions from US people which seem to me to come from their pockets.
Burn-Murdoch's usual shtick afaics is to focus on a detail, and ignore the wider context, then drawing sweeping conclusions from his narrow analysis than it justifies.
This graph has been called out everywhere.
So he is comparing the excess Americans are paying on their medical insurance with people in the U.K. paying for private health cover. Usually via insurance from work!
All the people I know who use private medical (to nearly 100%) are using it to short circuit the wait for seeing a consultant. And doing so via insurance.
I could not get that far, because he does not explain it.
He is comparing 'out of pocket payments' - with a an added bit of an emphasis on crowdfunding for exotic treatment. He also pulls in "out of pocket" payments by uninsured US people, which don't exist in the UK of course as everyone is covered by NHS (arguably, tourists aside).
Other categories (which are other sub-categories of an American type health expenditure analysis he does not specify) are "compulsory" and "voluntary". He seems to put some things in voluntary that he does not specify etc.
It's a shoot-from-the-hip dog's breakfast.
There was another one recently where he was arguing without much supporting data and questionable comparisons that the NHS was in collapse because of 'chronic illness'. I think it was this one, which is now firewalled: https://www.ft.com/content/2f1d62ee-bc1b-4eae-bebd-f4e32076bcd5

There's a global shortage of fusil fields because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine you stupid nitwit. If we, and the rest of Europe, had built wind turbines (and solar panels) more quickly we wouldn't need to buy so much gas and we'd save a fortune.

Because Vladimir Putin told the green lobby to do one.

The elected figures, at least, have less to fear from their members than US Republicans do. It's why they could have been braver, earlier.
Once a new leader is in place they should hopefully move on, like Labour's members have.

Putin isn’t the only one with gas. Russia represents something like 10% of global supply.
The reason Russia has gas is that it has large, fairly accessible fields.
The Norwegians have lots of gas. We have some. Most of Europe doesn’t have gas deposits.

If that's the case, and I'm not saying it isn't, then why are the frackers so keen to get fracking? private companies don't bother with unpromising or marginal sites, and yet the lobby to start fracking seems pretty intense...??

The phenomenon of people hell bent on losing their shirts is an ancient and fascinating one.
Look at the light space launch space market. Billions being invested in dozens of startups. That in most cases are aiming for a higher cost per launch than existing market participants. Yes, their business plan is to offer a product that costs more than the competition….
The fact is many people will make lots of money providing the equipment, drilling holes etc, even if the investors lose their shirts. Just as in the light launch industry many people will have a good salary while the merry go round turns. And if they cash out their stock options before the bust, maybe even Fuck-You-Money.

But there's are lots of other possibilities. Could be ATACMS. Could be sabotage. Sometimes we hear more details about these sorts of strikes later and sometimes not.

I think they need one with 1000km or so, so they can also get the Baltic Fleet.

As Henry Mance implies, also, anyone who is still using a strip shredder in government work is seriously unfit. I wouldn't even use it for private purposes.

The only thing that can be set up in tie frame is containerised diesel generators. Wonder what the prices for those is doing….
There's enough belief in his target selectorate that they are being economically and culturally victimised, not all of which is totally unfounded, for it to take hold.

Not worth the risk - he was not that far off winning in 2020, despite being so many votes behind.
God help me, I have just seen into the very maw of madness itself.
I'm not well today - I returned from the Lake District with Kendal Mint cake, some other local offerings and a stinking summer cold.
Anyway, having recovered from my non-work related afternoon sleep, I decided to try to ease my delirium with a little tv and alighted on GB News and some offering called "Dewbs & Co". At first, I thought it might be a plucky attempt to re-create the manic humour of Tiswas from the early 80s.
How wrong was I.
Instead, Michelle Dewberry holds forth to a sycophantic group of individuals on the subject of the Conservative leadership contest - fair enough, was she going to discuss the philosophical and policy differences between Truss and Sunak or evaluate their latest hustings performances?
No, apparently it's "all gone on too long" - why, she opined, didn't the Conservatives agree to end the contest at the end of July so "the winner could get on with it, recall Parliament in the second week of August and start governing". Apparently, democracy and the democratic process now have to align with those who have the attention span of an easily-distracted gnat. Apparently, the Tories should have changed their own rules so we could get a quicker result.
I suppose the next thing will be the 24-hour election - dissolution Wednesday, vote Thursday, new Government Friday.
Apart from at this point reaching for the painkillers my other thought was to ask how much time in the past 6-8 weeks "Dewbs & Co" has devoted to the Conservative leadership election and how much they have entertained their 30 or 40 viewers. I was left thinking a pint with Nigel Farage might not be the worst option after all.
My car insurance set itself up to auto-renew. No option to change.
Comes to renewal date. They send me an email with their quote. £424.

The worst thing about the light launch industry is that there might be billions to be made in new space over the next few years. Yet people are concentrating on the trucks, rather than the cargo, as the trucks are 'sexy'.
I was interested to see that Northrop Grumman are going with a small NewSpace company called Firefly to provide engines for its Antares rocket - as that currently relies n Russian engines. I can see Firefly abandoning its own rocket now (although they might try to get it to orbit, just to say they did so).
If I wanted to lose a fortune in the space industry (which is much more likely than making a fortune), then I would make launcher-agnostic cargo - e.g. satellites - rather than yet another launcher.
At least SpinLaunch are doing something different - even if it is crazy...
As someone who’s sunk many years into studying FBI’s political abuses of power, I’ll note that they tended to involve *secret* surveillance, for the obvious reason that it’s rather dangerous to openly go after powerful political actors when you don’t, in fact, have the goods... I suppose it’s conceivable that a notoriously cautious AG has decided to frivolously and very publicly kick a hornet’s nest for the sake of mildly inconveniencing the former president. But it does not seem very likely. https://twitter.com/normative/status/1557047082250272772

Maybe it’s a plot to get him to run . Any Dem running against Trump has a much better chance of winning .
Not worth the risk - he was not that far off winning in 2020, despite being so many votes behind.
That was before the Jan 6 attack on Congress.
I don’t see how he wins again and the GOP would rather someone else ran but are too frightened to say so now because of Trumps base . That’s not enough now to win elections but enough to keep the GOP in check .
Not as dramatic as it might sound as the article suggests. Those whose political sympathies lie with either Sadiq Khan or Grant Shapps will want to make as much capital (sorry) as they can but fortunately the grown-ups doing the actual negotiating will reach a deal of sorts.
Looking at the actual numbers, while weekend passenger numbers are back to 80-90% of pre-Covid, the weekday numbers are still at 65-75%. TfL are compensating by running fewer tubes so bigger gaps so the perception may be it's back to pre-Covid but it's not. Add in fare evasion which is endemic in my part of town especially among young men and even with more tourists about the truth is the pre-Covid operational model is broken.
It's likely inflation will mean big fare increases in January which will go down like a lump of cold sick with public transport passengers but that won't help TfL that much. I suspect it won't come to, for example, mothballing the Bakerloo Line but there will be some serious reviews of the service if the numbers continue as they are.

NG are going with Firefly because they have demonstrated that they can build a new rocket engine for less money. Rather than say, Aerojet. Who can re-warm an existing design, badly, for only 534% extra cost.
This is awesome - new technology cutting costs and producing better products. It will also catapult Firefly up the size category into the medium/heavy lift world. I think that Firefly will simply move into bigger rockets….
No problem. We’re going back to 1980 apparently when olive oil was something you got from the chemist to clear ear wax, Mazola or dripping all the way otherwise.

The risk of "rationing" and "shutdowns" and expense is due to how expensive and restricted carbon power has become due to Russia's invasion especially.
Wind etc is reducing our vulnerability not increasing it.
The only reference to wind power is here: Instead of focusing on technological solutions that enable us to master our environment and get more energy in a more carbon-efficient way — nuclear, CCS, fracking, one day fusion – we have focused on managing demand so we can use medieval technology like wind power.
He's not saying wind power isn't a positive. He's saying that other technologies would mean we wouldn't have to rely solely on wind power. (As I said, I don't understand why he described fracking as "carbon-efficient".)
Nobody is saying wind power isn't a positive. OF course its a positive. Its a big positive. But as of yet it cannot do the heavy lifting we need to keep us going.
One day it might. I hope it does. Right now it can't.
So, how do we get to that future? By investing in wind power and wind power technology.

IF you think Frost's message is appealing to some now, wait til January.
There's a global shortage of fusil fields because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine you stupid nitwit. If we, and the rest of Europe, had built wind turbines (and solar panels) more quickly we wouldn't need to buy so much gas and we'd save a fortune.
Why is Vladimir Putin the only person with any gas? why does nobody else have gas, and why does he have so much?
Because Vladimir Putin told the green lobby to do one.
I think it’s more to do with Russia being the largest country in the world and, thus, conveniently including some large gas fields.
Comments
Russia has already massively reduced the flow of gas.
Are we too cynical for it? Nadine and JRM have tried going that route with Boris, just short of breaking into tears when talking about his ousting, but it doesn't seem to have really caught on, even when contemplating Saint Maggie or the Jezziah.
In the article, Frost is very pro nuclear.

Should we buy some?

"Donald Trump is facing historic legal and legislative scrutiny for a former president, under investigation by U.S. lawmakers, local district attorneys, a state attorney general and the Justice Department. Authorities are looking into Trump and his family business for a medley of possible wrongdoing, including his actions leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and how he valued his various assets for loan and tax purposes."

And then, besides those official investigations, he is also the target of lawsuits by individuals and groups.

In fact, he is backing increasing what he calls "carbon-efficient" forms on energy, rather than limiting power consumption. In fact he says nothing about cutting down on wind power. Though why he thinks fracking is "carbon-efficient" I don't know:

Burn-Murdoch's usual shtick afaics is to focus on a detail, and ignore the wider context, then drawing sweeping conclusions from his narrow analysis than it justifies.
This graph has been called out everywhere.
I know he is, regrettably, a charismatic force, but the intensity of personal support he gets from elected figures even before he is the candidate seems most odd. This is not the sort of thing that is just standing up for one of their own.

All the people I know who use private medical (to nearly 100%) are using it to short circuit the wait for seeing a consultant. And doing so via insurance.
Its insane.
I think it was this one, which is now firewalled:

How did the US mount AGM-88 HARM missiles onto Ukrainian fighters... well, I think I know how. A short thread 🧵:
AGM-88B/C-1/D missiles have three operation modes:
• Self-Protect (SP)
• Target Of Opportunity (TOO)
• Pre-Briefed (PB)
The 150km range in the latter mode is quite impressive.
There's enough belief in his target selectorate that they are being economically and culturally victimised, not all of which is totally unfounded, for it to take hold.
