So the Tories need to do something about housing costs. I think the subsidy they could wear would be a large house building program even if this needs direct state intervention. The success in the past of Tories has been amongst homeowners. The fact that the educated and employed are struggling to secure accommodation has… -

Even more than the 100% mortgages, the sign of sickness in the banking and housing sectors were the 125% mortgages. Beyond mad. And it should also of course be pointed out that in theory, under Help to Buy, you can buy with a 5% deposit (I know it's more difficult than that in practice) and that is a coalition policy. In a… -

Alistair, a word of warning - steer clear of leasing, it can make selling the house or re-mortgaging tricky. Also someone else is getting most of the benefit. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/jan/31/leasehold-solar-panels-lease-mortgage-house-sale Our experience has been very similar to Big_G's. It was well-worth… -
Re: Ipsos MRP has the Tories on 115 seats – politicalbetting.com
Your pay might not have but my pay rises have been comfortably above inflation as have those of many millions - minimum wage has increased by over 10% for both the last two years. The key factor has been, as almost always, the housing effect. Those hit by big increases in mortgage costs have been hurt financially - those… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » 12 Good Men
I really don't get the big deal about this Jenrick thing. Surely approving housing developments has been policy by all parties for years now. In London too for people to be whining I don't understand it. Has the housing crisis in London dissipated? Do Londoners not need more homes? Stuff NIMBYs and the permanently outraged… -

If you look at my post, you see I mention renting as well. All those but-to-rent houses are bought for a reason - most people make money (or at least break even) on them. Some of the problem has been caused by smaller number of people in each household, therefore more properties required to house the same population.… -
Re: Green policies are popular – politicalbetting.com
It's a policy which is superficially attractive. There are far too many people overpaid despite being neither use nor ornament. However it would be trivially easy to get round. And, frankly, it's all the rest of their policies and the far too many utterly nasty fruitloops they have representing them which are the problem.… -

I should confirm, I am sceptical of the notion of a regional identity. I am a Lancastrian more than I am a North Westerner. Now I acknowledge we have to recognise a distinction between identity and practicalities for policy delivery, and they may not marry up, yet I can't see why cities and counties are not the best unit… -
Re: Chronicle of a bet foretold: Thin gruel – politicalbetting.com
The whole POETS day thing - albeit six on a Friday is a bit late for my blood - reeks of desperation from the Conservative Party. Although I don’t detect any particular malicious intention from them. They have been trying to draw distinction between Sunak and Starmer’s ages for some time. And trying to get a “Sleepy… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Mrs May needs to use the Fallon vacancy to bring in new talent
Rates have just been put back to where they were last summer before Carney and co cut them after the referendum. A totally unnecessary cut then backed up by more QE. So let's not get carried away. Savings rates are not going to change much on the back of a 0.25 per cent rate rise. Banks and building societies don't need… -

Re: The matter of Britain’s franchise – politicalbetting.com
I quite like Dianne Abbott, I'm not entirely sure why. I just have a soft spot for her. Also I imagine she has come through quite unimaginable shit to get to where she is, as a black woman and now Mother of the House, starting out decades ago when racism really was pervasive and grim She has said some things that are… -
Re: As Reform continues to be a suppository (sic) for Tory MPs here's what the voters say
The BBC summary of Trump's press conference is up. It is surely journalistic malpractice not to report that Trump gave every impression of suffering dementia ? Reporters arrived at today’s White House briefing with questions that spanned continents – Greenland, Venezuela, and Iran foremost among them – and our ears pricked… -
Re: QUESTIONS THE BUSINESS SELECT COMMITTEE SHOULD BE ASKING – politicalbetting.com
The requirement for people to be personally present has been used since ancient times to… filter… who gets power. The requirement that you have lots of free time to rock up at the market place and vote is, of course, great for the rich. Not so great for the chap who doesn’t own a horse and lives 150 miles from Rome. More… -

Are Arlene Foster and the BBC fake news? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-46533245 17:55 She says they emphasised their position that they were "not seeking assurances or promises" but "fundamental legal text changes". Mrs Foster adds: "The prime minister has known our position. We have been consistent which is… -

Yep, why else is Farage going over to campaign for Trump as he did in 2016 (remember Trump backed Brexit even before Leave won when Obama was threatening to send us 'to the back of the queue') and why else is Boris now saying Trump has 'made America great again'? Biden like Obama and Hillary has little time for Brexit and… -

Mike says: The other big development this month has, of course, been the improving economic data that has been coming out and that does not appear to be having an impact either. That, surely, will start to show if people start to feel a bit better off." Problem is, for the Tories, that people don't FEEL better off. Fuel… -
