1. I think that is (fortunately) slightly harder than it looks. Like in Spain, too much of the activity has been focused on building houses people simply cannot afford. Ordos was build as a City for a million people: and now lies largely empty. You can rest assured that the big Chinese banks who paid for this will not yet… -

The argument for a large facility to house asylum seekers pending resolution of their cases is an interesting one. I'm sure "somewhere" can be found - using disused military bases has been done before in Kent for example. It's obviously easier to manage asylum seekers if they are all together rather than widely dispersed… -

Yes Spahn has been better, but Merkel leaving everything to her health minister sends the wrong message. While Johnson is one of the politicians I most despise, he has at least been talking about this crisis to the public. I think Germany is well-prepared in some ways: numbers of intensive care places immediately… -

That was quick to catch it. I has decided I didn't have the energy for a Thompson argument his morning. I really appreciate you withdrawing the comment. I'd accept that the chap as stupid and/or reckless. But there's a lot of undeserved misfortune around at the moment, and I'm seeing one of my ex-tenants tomorrow to try… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » The Tories the big movers in the first week of GE15 Commons
The Divisional Court (Sir Brian Leveson P, Jay & Lewis JJ) has refused permission to claim judicial review in R. (on the application of Wheeler) v Office of the Prime Minister (No.2). It seems slightly questionable that a legitimate expectation argument about the government’s decision to opt back into the European Arrest… -

We discussed this. You posted data that wasn't actually from the paper and with a nonsense idea like 'ageing' the body via covid. I think it more likely we are seeing lots more mental health issues (partly related to covid, partly because the young are convinced that there has never been a worse time to be a youngster*) *… -

This conversation (on education) has been going on for over seven hours! (Well, it's been going on since 2005, but going on continuously for seven hours without many of the participants seeming to need a break.) I salute your stamina. In the time since my earlier forays into it around 5 o'clock I have discovered an Edward… -

NYT ($) - DeSantis’s Allies Discover Disney Evaded Florida’s Move to Rein It In The Florida governor’s new Disney World oversight board belatedly realized that the company had quietly sidestepped its control. Over the past two months, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has repeatedly declared victory in his yearlong effort to… -

Helicopter video of Hollywood Hills on fire. https://x.com/glorydoge/status/1877181086700019865 From looking at a map, the Hills area seems to be mostly large houses and a lot of trees. Ideal for spreading fire. There’s a lot of stories about insurance companies cancelling fire cover last year for many of the affected… -

Why would a good federalist do that? You either buy into what works best or you don’t. Scottish nationalism It’s just that same anti London bias 100%. Only with added Hitler spectacles on. And the popularity of SNP is on a cycle, ten years old now, clocks ticking. Won’t even be part of the political debate soon. I say… -
Re: Petrol to rise to £2 a litre this year? – politicalbetting.com
Sadly true. My wife has been arguing with an aunt in Russia today, who says that it was “Ukranian nationalists” who bombed the nuclear power plant last night. She can’t be convinced, even by pictures of a house she’s visited in Ukraine minus all the windows, several hundred kilometres from the Donbass. Millions of Russians…
