Turkmenistan is looking to develop its tourism. There is I think plenty there for people looking for the Silk Road experience. Or burning craters. Or carpets. Or a gleaming marble city and parks and golden statues of the former leader, the gloriously bonkers Turkmenbashi. During whose times it was the third most repressive country on Earth. (First was never achievable, not with North Korea always taking top spot....)
They are being very cautious though in opening it up until it is "ready". It probably is ready now. Maybe if a professional travel writer went there to tell them what works - and what yet doesn't - they might get more confident. Unless you trash the place, of course...
So if the Knappers' Gazette was interested in sending you out there, I can put you in touch with people who can get you into the Tourism Ministry and make it so.
