A piece of anecdata: just had a pleasant lady from the council knock on our front door to check the voter registration data for this property.
South Cambs certainly seem proactive on voter registration.
When we apologised for not having filled out the form yet (because we, ahem, lost it), she smiled and said: "If everyone did it I wouldn't have a job."
Edit: and first, and off-topic. Oh well.0 -

In a funny way it doesn't seem that different to my old school form tutor who voted Tory in '97 and became rapidly annoyed by the new Labour government announcing all kinds of changes which didn't seem to have been properly thought through. Politically minded people have a tendency to think that with public servants it's all about ideology. It isn't. It's more often than not about practicality. I don't see a great deal of difference between teachers moaning about Gove and employees complaining about their managers.
On Nick Palmer's point about Corbyn and the Greens, I have to say this 2015 Green voter has not yet been devoured by Corbynmania. I voted Green as a vaguely left of centre protest vote in a safe Labour seat. Miliband's refusal to embrace electoral reform and condemn phone hacking at the Mirror (over which he should have felt vindicated) was symbolic of a cultural malaise in the Labour party that I don't see Corbyn fixing at the moment.0 -

As we've gone off-topic, the pub where we have a quiz is under new management. They used stock George Wright anyway, but from November, they'll be stocking three George Wright brews (Drunken Duck,Cheeky Pheasant at al) and six other real ales from a 50 mile radius.
All £2.50 a pint but CAMRA members get 50p a pint off the George Wright brews and 20p off the others. £2 a pint for good beer that eats Boddingtons for breakfast and defecates John Smith (courtsey the Big Bang Theory).

I'm not convinced teachers as a whole are all that left wing. There was polling that suggested more voted Tory in 2010 than Labour. Neither do I think Cameron would have removed Gove if he felt the entire profession was irredeemably anti-tory.
A lot of people who think teachers are all very left wing seem to live in London. Perhaps there's a certain kind of mentality that's attracted to state secondaries in the capital? Not sure it's quite the same elsewhere.0 -
FPT, UKIP's performance in local by-elections has been a good deal better from September onwards than it was earlier in the Summer. They've averaged 15% in 20 contests. That's probably down to the EU and migrants being in the news.0

I have had something to do with electoral registration myself. There was a very poor response rate for the first set of forms sent out - less than half returned - with the manager bemoaning the money it was wasting us since the forms had to be sent out again. Liberals: - £25
NDP: +£100

The reason that the grammar schools were phased out was because middle-class parents of kids who failed to 11+ exam didn't like the secondary moderns. The move was politically popular in many areas. Maggie, when EdSec, oversaw much of the change.0

I was reading one of Thursday's threads, and I saw some of the conversation on here re. education. As someone on the left, I'm well aware that some schools will always be better than others; but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to close the gap between schools, and make sure that as many schools as possible can offer children equality of opportunity, and given kids the best chance at life. Those on the Left I know don't have an issue with parents wanting to do the best for their children; however governments cannot afford to look at society from the individualistic perspective of middle class parents who see private education as the best opportunity for their children. They have to make sure, that for those that cannot afford private education, a wealth of opportunities also exists so they can succeed as well. Someone's life chances should be be pre-determined before they are even born.

Why do I get the feeling I have seen her somewhere before??
Last knockings of the show and she just ranted about a different subject to the one being discussed without asking a question... Very similar to the labour plant in Ramsgate last year vs Diane James0 -

I'm not saying it's the best position ever, just being honest. But offering the NDP at 40/1 for most seats and the Tories at 7/1 is good value IMHO even if it's a loser.TheWhiteRabbit said:

Don't get me started on no-balls. The use of technology is changing the game. Bowlers are bowling overs of no-balls that are going unpunished cos the umpires only check it if a wicket falls. its bonkers.0

There are plenty of Tory MPs who are worried about the tax credit changes. As I said on the previous thread, there are so many changes coming down the pike, it's not clear to me what the actual impact will be in the round. I'd like more quantitative data, not just edge-case andecdota.bigjohnowls said:isam said:
