I don't think the Kentucky clerk situation is going anywhere. Davis is a government employee and therefore her sole purpose is to function as part of the government. If Davis was making a conscience based protest as a private business she'd have a point I would agree with. However as she takes the government shilling I agree with Fiorina on this:TheScreamingEagles said:Off topic looks like the GOP have a new cause célèbre in Kim Davis for their culture wars.
"I think in this particular case, this woman now needs to make a decision of conscience. Is she prepared to continue to work for the government, be paid by the government, in which case she needs to execute the government’s will, or does she feel so strongly about this that she wants to sever her employment with the government and go seek employment elsewhere where her religious liberties will be paramount over her duties as a government employee.”0 -
The poll was about as accurate as a random self-selecting internet poll, Corbyn was on well over 80%, comfortably more than 20% above the rating he was on even in the last yougov Labour members' poll. I think the Corbyn supporters are like Yes backers in indyref, extremely and unashamedly vocal, it is the silent potential ABCs who may be more significantNickPalmer said:Huge Corbyn win on the debate according to the Sky News poll, though note that it's simply 8000 viewers who signed up, not a random sample:

The question will be how many quiet, small voices there are waiting to vote for Yvette.
I think we should call them Mini Coopers.

All I said that with their smartphones and cash to run them, shows that these so called migrants are not refugees. You may love them, Saddened, so take them to your bosom or better still your house, and see how much you'll love then then. Stop acting like a spoilt child.0 -
I see Nicola Sturgeon has just said we have a moral obligation to take more refugees, perhaps we could send them to Scotland then as they have the lowest population density in the UK0

An interesting evening in prospect - the Falcons have their last pre-season game this evening, and Georgia Tech have their first regular season game. The forecast is for severe thunderstorms, so traffic will be a mess.
A busy sports night - there are 16 exhibition NFL games this evening, and 19 college football games as their season starts.0 -

It's not as if we're not doing a lot to help already, with hundreds of £millions in aid, and half the Royal Navy steaming up and down the Med, fishing people out of the sea.

The Man on the Clapham Omnibus is an important and very real legal concept. He is a reasonably educated, intelligent and nondescript person, against whom somebody's conduct, actions and views can be measured.
Mrs Thompson doesn't actually pass muster as a fair-minded and informed observer.0 -

Katie Hopkins is a thoroughly unpleasant individual. She gives the right wing a bad name, makes the country a more divisive ugly place, and purely so she can rake in the money through generating outrage. It is incredible levels of selfishness to put her own career before the conservative movement or the country. We could take in one more Syrian refugee if we sent her in the other direction.0

It will require more than a few air strikes to halt ISIS, but if we can't deal with the cause the refugees are going to keep coming, and coming. The Man on the Clapham Omnibus is an important and very real legal concept. He is a reasonably educated, intelligent and nondescript person, against whom somebody's conduct, actions and views can be measured.
Mrs Thompson doesn't actually pass muster as a fair-minded and informed observer.0 -
It's possible there is not the means, short of total war. Assad is Putin's friend. But I believe we need to pick up from where Miliband forced us off. But what about the likes of David Davis? Will they change their minds?glw said:

"Just how far is Russia prepared to go to back the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad?
Recent sightings of brand new Russian armoured vehicles in Syria, of types never previously supplied to its ally, suggest that with the Assad regime suffering serious reverses, Moscow is intent on redressing the military balance.
On 20 August, a heavily-laden Alligator class landing ship of the Russian Navy, the Nikolay Filchenkov, was seen passing southwards through the Bosphorus."

The Times is pointing out that
''A squadron of SAS soldiers is thought to be operating in Iraqi Kurdistan, embedded with the Kurdish peshmerga forces fighting Islamic State militants. The Kurdish troops have proved a vital source of information on the extremists from across the border in Syria.''
''The SAS and British spies in the region are helping the CIA and JSOC, which compiled the target list that includes senior members of al-Qaeda operating in Syria. The programme, first reported in the Washington Post this week, is separate to the wider US-led coalition effort against Islamic State.''
So we are doing are bit out there. Furthermore
''Conventional British forces do not have authority to operate in Syria but David Cameron has pledged to use the full force of the state to put Emwazi “out of action”. A former SAS commander said the prime minister did not need to seek parliamentary approval for an operation into Syria against Emwazi.''
I wonder what more detail would normally be shared with the LOTO?0 -
