Anyway, the big match tonight. I'm hoping for a nice controlled one niller.

Save the pyrotechnics for the business end of the tournament.

Within Westminster there is growing speculation Nigel Farage will not lead Reform into the next election. If that proves correct, it could create a political earthquake that would surpass any of the reverberations Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham have generated over the past week.

    Dan Hodges - Mail

Quite likely - the £5million "gift" has damaged him irreparably. There is no satisfactory explanation for it and he is going to get questions on it every time he sticks his head in the firing line.

Wonder if the crypto guy will want his money back if Farage quits? He won't be a happy bunny that's for sure.

The gift has a perfectly satisfactory explanation. It was given to make him personally rich enough not to need other support and to make him beholden to the giver.

Not sure the giver would be that upset. £5m is a smallish investment. Even if Farage quits as the head of Reform he will be a big player, with a personal vote to throw around.
If it has a satisfactory explanation Farage would have taken steps to make sure it was declared since, even if for some technical reason of timing it didn't have to be declared, the ordinary voter and the media would have thought it odd once it was leaked.

He took a chance on not being found out and lost. I wonder what else we don't know about Farage that the public may feel has political not just personal and private significance?

On topic, I wouldn't bother with Supergirl:

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, 57% of 261 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.60/10.

Excerpt from "Zima Blue" at the beginning

"..."Let's go back to the wine for a moment," Zima said. "Normally, you'd have relied on the advice of the AM [an AI], wouldn't you? [...] And you follow that advice unquestioningly?" I sipped at the red. "Of course. Wouldn't it be a little childish to go against it just to make a point about free will? After all, I'm more likely to be satisfied with the choice it suggests." "But unless you ignore that suggestion now and then, won't your whole life become a set of predictable responses?" "Maybe," I said. "But is that so very bad? If I'm happy, what do I care?"..."

Excerpt from "Zima Blue" at the end

"...It turned out that I remembered more of our meeting on the island than I had any right to. Make of that what you will, but it seemed I didn't need the mental crutch of my AM quite as much as I'd always imagined. Zima was right: I'd allowed my life to become scripted, laid out like a blueprint. It was always red wine with sunsets, never the white..."

    I enjoyed it.

    I am cursing Christopher Nolan.

Speaking to the staff at my cinema as tickets for Spider-Man: Brand New Day are now available but not IMAX showings and it turns out that Nolan has got an agreement with IMAX that only The Odyssey will be shown in IMAX for a near three week window which covers Spidey's first week or so.

I love Chris Nolan and The Odyssey but I hate him right now.

NEW: Admiral Sir Tony Radakin has written an explosive op-ed for The Sunday Times.

It is the first time the former chief of the defence staff has spoken since retiring last year.

    He said:

💥 Andy Burnham must appoint a "wartime cabinet" that will properly fund the military.
💥 The "peace dividend" is over - and the role of the PM is now a "quasi-wartime" one.
💥 The UK is "looking like a laggard" in Nato and we are bottom of the Nato league table to meet our military commitments.
💥 Warned Burnham to avoid antagonising Donald Trump - or else the USA could withdraw its "unconditional support" for the UK.
💥 Says the next PM must "protect the nuclear deterrent."

    Utter tripe from Radakin

Wartime Cabinet - Why? Which War? Where? what's changed!?
The role of any PM has never been any different!
The UK was a laggard, a laggard on his watch - the hollowing out from 2010 to 2024 is being reversed, it can't be done in 2 or 3 years
If we have to base any policy in keeping Trump happy then the problem is Trump not the POlicy. Tell him to fuck off!
What nuclear deterrent , an aging system we pay an extortionate sum for that we cannot control. Its obsolete and can we trust anything Trump has control over.

"Yorkshire has recorded its highest ever June temperature - reaching 34.4C (93.5F) in Sheffield.

The new record, set at the Met Office's weather station in Weston Park, surpasses the previous long-standing record of 33.1C (91.5) observed in Huddersfield on 22 June 1941."

If you are bored witing for some sporting event, you might want to take a video tour of US national parks.

All of the air quality webcam sites have links to other nearby webcams. For example: https://www.nps.gov/mora/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Cheaper and quicker than flying there.

Serbia's president has announced his intention to resign in a couple of weeks. I wonder what that's about?

"University students behind more than a year of protests against Vucic's increasingly autocratic rule in Serbia have been demanding early parliamentary elections for over a year but Vucic so far has refrained from setting the date.

"Vucic has gradually tightened his grip on power since his populist party took over the Serbian government 14 years ago. A train accident in the country's north in November 2024 triggered months-long mass protests demanding accountability for the tragedy that killed 16 people."

It’s awful, like some rubbish 80s wrigleys ad or some rubbish surfer series. A camper van driving through the US with a non descriptive soft rock song.

They could have had a great tune made encompassing Mexican, US and Canadian music with a good montage blending all three hosts.

The pundits are definitely better than the BBC apart from Joe Hart who has provided really good insight which I was surprised about as I thought he was just a cheesy shampoo salesman.

    Russia.

Russia has used biological weapons on the streets of the UK.

Russia was behind the arson attacks on the properties of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Russia keeps on trying to disrupt our infrastructure.
Which is why we should be combating Russian aggression, both overt and covert. Hint to MoD. More aircraft carriers and infantry won’t work. More drones, better intelligence and guerilla tactics might.

I know we are hinting the Russians where it hurts Putin personally and the ability to fund his wars.

It doesn't help when voters are happy to vote for PMs who deliberately leave their security detail to party with KGB agents though!

Non neglible chance Tuchel prefers the other side of the draw, swaps Mexico at altitude for Spain but otherwise an easier quarter imo.

"Gloryland" was ITV's theme song for USA 94.

    BBC:

"Yorkshire has recorded its highest ever June temperature - reaching 34.4C (93.5F) in Sheffield.

The new record, set at the Met Office's weather station in Weston Park, surpasses the previous long-standing record of 33.1C (91.5) observed in Huddersfield on 22 June 1941."

Nearly three degrees colder than "down south" yesterday!
It was at least a degree hotter in the Yorkshire Flatlands than up the hill in Sheffield but there are no gauges. Bawtry (holder of the September record) has long gone and Gringley is in Notts.

We likely beat the 40.3C in 2022 too, but again, no official gauges.

    Cuts, innit.

Skybet have given me a free £1 bet for the event, which I have put on England to win 4-0 and to take more corners than Paraguay in both halves. If all this happens I win £728.
I'm quietly rooting for the equally improbable double of Ghana 3 - Croatia 0, England 0 - Panama 1 tonight.

Scotland are going out anyway so, for the bantz, the killer result might as well be an England defeat!
Those final scores would still keep the Tartan corpse alive, if only for another 3 hours. Methinks Messrs Modric and co will have the other game under control
Ah, I keep forgetting goal difference is a secondary tiebreak in the groups.

Bellicose nonsense. We’re not at war and are unlikely to be, our best defence is a good offence by funnelling support to Ukraine, rather than 20th century military spending,
Also dealling with the political subversion and cyberwarfare.

That is where the threat lies at the moment.

I'm starting to get confused between politicians and footballers.

Why are both teams playing in their away colours?

Cofused me. For the first minute I was supporting the wrong team.

Just seen an ad for The Odyssey. Looks worryingly like the pile of poo that Troy was but will watch it having loved the story since a child.

    From the trailer(s)
    • I dislike the dialogue
    • I adore the cinematography
    • I don't really know if I'm going to like it.
    • But I'm going to see it anyway (I've seen Tenet in the cinema twice now, so gluttony for punishment confirmed)

    Russia.

Russia has used biological weapons on the streets of the UK.

Russia was behind the arson attacks on the properties of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Russia keeps on trying to disrupt our infrastructure.
And are Radakin’s spending priorities going to stop that? We need better intelligence and policing to stop the disruption of our infrastructure. Making the army bigger or some new fighter jets won’t help.

We are looking somewhat ordinary. We don’t have the excuse, unlike against Ghana, that they are playing a low block.

Serious lack of a cutting edge again. England really need to work out how to get Kane in the game. He's been invisible so far.
We don’t seem to have that player who can get the ball in the middle of the pitch, hold it then spot runs. And Kane probably needs to stay up more so there is someone for the long ball to go to.
