Trump: "We should be the lowest interest rate in the world."
Good luck America!!
Low interest rates were arguably the cause of Britain's rise to global ascendancy - but I'm given to understand that they resulted from the willingness of Parliament to vote for taxation once they had wrested control of spending it from the Monarch, thereby making Britain a safe bet to lend to, rather than by dictatorial fiat.
I guess we'll find out how well Trump's approach works out.
I can’t believe that Southampton just beat Leicester
3-0 down after half an hour, and still after an hour
Won 3-4 deep into injury time
Yep. Very much a game of two halves. First half we played positive attacking football, second half defended timidly, with no pressing, and no counter attacks. The players confidence is shot. Once we conceded a goal the writing was on the wall.
I find it amazing Leicester get hit with a points deduction over Premiership financial stuff yet, here we are, a couple of years down the line ans with Man City nothing still.

‘Disrespectful’ Labour drops HM title from Government communications
Rebrand raises ‘serious questions’ about Labour’s attitude towards monarchy, Tories say
Labour has been accused of disrespecting the King after the HM title was dropped from official Government communications.
In a controversial rebrand, the Government now refers to itself as the UK Government, rather than HM Government.
The Tories accused Labour of trying to “quietly obliterate tradition”, pledging to reverse the move if they returned to power.
Previous guidelines from the Government Communication Service stated that HM Government should always be used in official branding “unless there is a specific reason not to”.
But Labour changed the rules, making UK Government the new “primary identity” of its branding.
Met Office has rain at more than 50% and mainly 80 or 90% for my area for every hour for over FORTY EIGHT hours.
This winter is insane.
That's a mostly dry couple of days in Ireland.
The first winter I had a weather station set up I was quite excited about an eight-day period when the humidity didn't drop below 98%, but my Irish in-laws were not at all fazed.

In news from Australia 'One Nation has emerged as the leading party in the country for working-class people, surpassing both Labor and the Coalition.
The latest Sky News Pulse, conducted by YouGov between February 3-10 showed the minor party secured 34 per cent of the working-class vote, compared to 27 per cent for Labor and 14 per cent for the Coalition.
Among all voters, 28 per cent supported One Nation, above the Coalition at 19 per cent primary vote, but slightly behind Labor on 30 per cent.

I believe at the time the 2013-14 winter broke recirds for rainfall and it was also mild. Those things tend to go together, as it's the mobile weather systems bringing rain from the Atlantic that keeps the temperatures up.

I would argue that it was the lack of inflation that was the key. Lenders knew they wouldn't be stiffed.
Maybe Trump can negotiate a permanent peace. He’s good at that.
"I have ended 43 wars, 34 of them in the Labour Party...."
I think Trump could be the only person capable of uniting the 428 factions of leftist politics in this country.
Just kidding, I've got some Corbynite relatives who have not gone pro-Trump exactly, but have definitely warmed up to him (they hate Starmer and seem to buy that Trump cares about peace).

If inflation expectations rise, the interest rates on new bonds issued will have to rise too, and the interest the US government will need to pay on its debt will grow rapidly. Could create an awful mess for whoever becomes President after Trump dies.

For a lovely moment I thought you were bringing us news of the UK Liberal Party - i.e. the ones who stayed in the old party after the bulk of members joined the new Lib Dem Party in 1989. I hadn't thought of them for years. Looking them up, I see, like the SDP, they were broadly on the side of Leave during the Brexit Referendum:
"In the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum campaign, the party let candidates express their own views, but both the National Executive and many party members supported Leave. As the party had a long-standing opposition to the use of referendums, they released a statement that ceding sovereignty was an exception to this principle, and that the Lisbon and Maastricht Treaties should have been subjected to referendums on transferring power to the European Union."
There is no betting or any other angle to this, but I thought it was interesting.

The autism epidemic is a myth: The increase is only in expansive overdiagnosis of kids "on the spectrum," e.g. "Would rather be alone than with others,” “Has difficulty making friends,” and “Is regarded by other children as odd or weird.” Severe cases (no language, socially unresponsive, etc.) have decreased. Reducing social media use decreases loneliness regardless of gender or level of social comparisons in youth with anxiety and depression: A randomized controlled trial
Loneliness and feeling socially isolated is especially problematic in youth experiencing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Social media use (SMU) was designed to promote social connection, but correlational studies suggest it is often associated with greater loneliness and mental health problems, with girls and those who engage in more frequent upward social comparisons being more negatively impacted by SMU. However, experimental studies are needed to gain insights into causality, especially in a vulnerable population of youth with affective distress. The present study experimentally investigated the effects of voluntarily reducing SMU to 1 h/day on loneliness, and whether intervention effects were moderated by gender and/or baseline levels of social comparisons in youth with pre-existing symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. After completing a baseline survey and providing daily screenshots of SMU for one week, 260 participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (reduce SMU to 1 h/day) or control group (no SMU restriction) for the next three weeks. A total of 219 participants completed the study and were included for analysis. Mixed models indicated a significant group x time interaction whereby the intervention group showed significantly greater reductions in loneliness compared to controls (β = −0.11, 95% CI [−0.21, −0.005]). However, neither gender (β = 0.23, 95% CI [−0.16, 0.63]) nor baseline social comparison (β = −0.04, 95% CI [−0.24, 0.15]) moderated these intervention effects. These findings suggest that reducing SMU may represent an important intervention component in a comprehensive approach to combating loneliness among a vulnerable population of youth presenting with affective distress.
I found this article yesterday after you had said ivermectin had no effect on cancer, but didn’t link to it as I thought sciencedirect would turn out to be some kind of site for quacks!
Someone flagged my post, as if I were giving malicious advice out of badness. I did say I wasn't claiming to be a medical expert of any kind, and was just relating the story of the relative of a friend who has defied the doctors predictions to stay alive, and possibly recover from a "terminal" diagnosis. I was trying to give some hope to @Cyclefree, who seemed very down. I am pleased to read the conclusion of that Science Direct article
There are some odd people on here
I did not read Cyclefree's posts - I am assuming that she disclosed very difficult medical prognoses.
Without wishing to upset or anger anyone, especially Cyclefree, I remain very firmly of the view that if a body can get cancer (or any illness) when certain stimuli are applied, it can also reverse cancer when those are reversed. To believe otherwise would be unscientific.

Part of the problem for the Tories now is that FPTP makes it look like a Tory vote is a wasted vote in lots of areas.

Thanks for the article. You only have to look at people in restaurants, cafes, on trains, buses, to see that it's stopping people from actually talking to other people around them.

So Labour's voteshare holding steady or rising is absolutely a thing.
Wild theory - like Labour's dramatic 'rise in membership', could this positive indicator actually be in anticipation of Starmer going? These people are probably going to vote Labour again because that twat will be gone?

Spectrum diagnoses annoy me. It's not just that the stats are more difficult for continuous variables than binary variables for individuals, but that for some cases they don't make sense

Kemi needs to start converting this into VI, again my anecdata is that people who previously voted Tory but didn't turn out in 2024 are broadly positive about her and willing to give the party a hearing. That's a start but we need to see how she motivates them to actually get off the sofa and vote.
Part of the problem for the Tories now is that FPTP makes it look like a Tory vote is a wasted vote in lots of areas.
But how many voters know that? They aren't baxtering opinion polls. All the held seats and second places from 2024 won't feel that way. That's 300 plus seats

I'm not about to throw a strop about it, but with these kind of rebrands I'm somewhat at a loss as to whether anyone was confused by it to necessitate a change.
Does SKS still bother to meet the King every week or has that gone too, I wonder.
I think that transitioned to phone calls years ago.
It was phone calls during the pandemic, I believe.
Ah, makes sense, we wouldn't have wanted a PM to kill the Queen.
More In Common have done their accidentally updating a bit early on the website trick, so tomorrow's VI is
Ref 30 (=) Lab 23 (+2) Con 21 (+1) Ld 12 (-2) Grn 10 (=) SNP 2 (=)
Starmers approval drops to just above his low of -51 at -50
So Labour's voteshare holding steady or rising is absolutely a thing.
Wild theory - like Labour's dramatic 'rise in membership', could this positive indicator actually be in anticipation of Starmer going? These people are probably going to vote Labour again because that twat will be gone?

People know they hear a lot more about Reform than the Tories now, that there are defections, that Reform may win (or at least challenge) at a by-election. In some areas they will be able to see Tories are still the main choice, but that won't be the case everywhere.
By my former grad student @AdamOmaryPhD
Spectrum diagnoses annoy me. It's not just that the stats are more difficult for continuous variables than binary variables for individuals, but that for some cases they don't make sense
I'm really sorry that the world won't conform to your desires.

It's always been likely that it's mostly just an increase in diagnosis rather than a real increase.
In autism particularly there was a change in definition so that ASD (autism spectrum disorder) now covers a far wider range of conditions than previously. @Leon used to post about this quite often, back in the day. Probably there are similar effects with other conditions.
For instance, some people are better at football than others. If you gave not being good at football a medical label, then the number of people diagnosed with Spursism would increase from none to lots, and even more if the government inadvertently encouraged people to seek a diagnosis of Spursism by handing out free taxi rides to school and extra time in GCSE PE exams.

Further - they need 'areas' to work out from. I've identified one or two before a key one for example is the West Lincs/Notts/Leics/Rutland/P'bo and Cambs quadrant

Bodies are weird and difficult to predict things. Advanced cancers can go into remission, but it is exceedingly unlikely. New treatments can be successful, and that is a bit more likely. My aunt was given a few months to live in 2018, but is fortunately still with us and doing fairly well. I hope for the same for other cancer sufferers and we have made big strides in treating cancer over my professional lifetime. Hope is important for people facing difficult prognoses. However, remember that false hope can also be damaging.

I don't think 'false' hope is particularly damaging actually - though obviously being taken in by a swindler is.
I agree broadly with the rest of your post though.
Unscientific language and theories abound in the cancer world, and in my experience much more in the world of conventional treatment than in naturopathic medicine. Our own oncology specialist recently described cancer as 'a wily opponent' - and that sort of anthropomorphism is so common it is universally accepted - yet it is very unhelpful. Cancer doesn't dislike you. It isn't sentient. It's a response of the body to something that's gone wrong.
OT it has just popped into my head that today is Microsoft's ‘patch Tuesday’ and Windows 11 is removing support for old printer drivers. If your old printer stops working...
As far as I can tell they're removing old printer drivers from the Windows Update database, so any printers you have connected and working will continue to work as before but if you have to buy a new computer or move the printer to another PC then you'll need to manually source and install drivers for it.

All the very best Cyclefree.
(My first proper job was for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, as then was,)
Hope is important for people facing difficult prognoses. However, remember that false hope can also be damaging.
My friend’s brother is taking ivermectin behind the doctors back, so is still having chemo. Perhaps the chemo is what’s killing the cancer, but that raises the question of why they gave him six months to live.
Anyway, as I said, I just wanted to share a positive story to Cyclefree. I wasn’t trying to con her into having false hope. I’m not on an earner if people buy ivermectin, I don’t even know what it is!

In a couple of months people will figure out how to use Seedance for porn and then the government will want to ban it. Another two or three months and hostile states will be using it to create fake news films to influence elections.
At the start of the image/video generation model 'era' there was a site called Civitai. Still on the go - but now has it's own weird 'currency'. And is so full of porn generators that I would recommend a vpn even just to search for the history of the site. Really proper grim.

Same as many other western nations, a white working class surge to a party of the populist anti immigration right but coming mainly at the expense of the main centre right party rather than the centre left (unless like Trump you converted the centre right into a populist right party)

I guess we'll find out how well Trump's approach works out.
For me they are the three who have the authority and credibility to be PM.

'One Nation has emerged as the leading party in the country for working-class people, surpassing both Labor and the Coalition.
The Greens captured 12 per cent of the vote, the independents five per cent and other minor parties six per cent.'

Just kidding, I've got some Corbynite relatives who have not gone pro-Trump exactly, but have definitely warmed up to him (they hate Starmer and seem to buy that Trump cares about peace).
I would certainly vote Reform over Labour on a forced choice now
If inflation expectations rise, the interest rates on new bonds issued will have to rise too, and the interest the US government will need to pay on its debt will grow rapidly. Could create an awful mess for whoever becomes President after Trump dies.
Edit: which is to say, can you inflate a debt away when you are still running a budget deficit?
"In the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum campaign, the party let candidates express their own views, but both the National Executive and many party members supported Leave. As the party had a long-standing opposition to the use of referendums, they released a statement that ceding sovereignty was an exception to this principle, and that the Lisbon and Maastricht Treaties should have been subjected to referendums on transferring power to the European Union."
There is no betting or any other angle to this, but I thought it was interesting.
Expect a U-turn to follow.

Wild theory - like Labour's dramatic 'rise in membership', could this positive indicator actually be in anticipation of Starmer going? These people are probably going to vote Labour again because that twat will be gone?
All the held seats and second places from 2024 won't feel that way. That's 300 plus seats
Voters are weirdos
People know they hear a lot more about Reform than the Tories now, that there are defections, that Reform may win (or at least challenge) at a by-election. In some areas they will be able to see Tories are still the main choice, but that won't be the case everywhere.
Anyway, look up hysteresis and you should be able to learn why it is perfectly scientific to believe otherwise to your statement. Arrow of time would also be a useful concept to consider.

But on the other it makes your confident assertion complete cobblers.
Depends on you how you will take that.
For a PM this unpopular, doesn’t it say how unpopular Reform are?
For instance, some people are better at football than others. If you gave not being good at football a medical label, then the number of people diagnosed with Spursism would increase from none to lots, and even more if the government inadvertently encouraged people to seek a diagnosis of Spursism by handing out free taxi rides to school and extra time in GCSE PE exams.
If they work out how to operate in the world as it is, not as they want it to be/think it should be by rights then they'll be ok

Worth nothing that if Albanese can avoid imminently self destructing he should make it to be the first PM to reach 4 years in office since 2007.
I also learn that in Australia they call it a "leadership spill" when there is a contest for a new leader of the a parliamentary party.
