As I had some claude credits to burn, I asked it to research and create a little html presentation of defence spending down the years. Faintly of surface interest (and faintly possibly correct too). Downloadable from :

Defence chiefs are preparing to make huge cuts to the military while at the same coming under pressure to ready the armed forces for possible war with Russia

An MoD assessment made last year showed a £28 billion shortfall between now and 2030, it is understood

class="Italic">Starmer was said to be deeply unhappy because he believed the recent strategic defence review (SDR) had been “fully costed”.

    "He believed".

The SDR I saw didn't have much on costings in it or even much on specific numbers for hardware - it was a strategic policy document. He already knew a big increase to 3.5% GDP was needed- his government has committed to it as policy- but hasn't matched it with the requisite funding in the Budget. He knew that too.

Did he not check or join the dots? Or did he not want to because he preferred wishful thinking and deniability?

Reeves is the worst Chancellor since Norman Lamont.
(I’m not really including Kwasi Kwarteng and that guy who was fiddling his income tax, as their tenures were too short, I guess Reeves is still ahead of them).

Just in the last week, Trump has:

Posted, on the White House’s government website, a fictitious narrative hailing the attempted coup of Jan 6 as a peaceful march attended by heroes, and accusing Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats of overseeing the real insurrection.

Kidnapped the leader of Venezuela and his wife, in contravention of international law, and essentially justified on the grounds that Venezuela’s oil belongs to the U.S.

Threatened to seize Greenland, reserving the right to use military force if necessary.

Seen the murder of 39 yo mother - slurred as “antifa” by the Vice President and other luminaries - by his quasi-paramilitary ICE goons.

1% of the Epstein files have been released.

God knows how much money the Trump family have received in bribery already since Jan 1.

Just been chatting to an American friend who has decided to pack up and leave. Sample size of one, but I wonder how many others are coming to the same conclusion?

President Trump declared on Wednesday evening that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by his “own morality,” brushing aside international law and other checks on his ability to use military might to strike, invade or coerce nations around the world.

Asked in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

You are being completely unfair. Detailed research and background checks have established that Renee once made a donation of $2.70 to Bernie Sanders and might well have been a lesbian. Surely 3 bullets to the head was a proportionate response?

Has Trump gone completely doolally? He's just throwing out these random executive orders that have significant implications, and he keeps talking about events in a manner that is disconnected from reality. Other senior Republican politicians can barely keep up with what he's saying, having to do news interviews to carefully walk back whatever nonsense Trump last came out with.

Well yes, but "thinking it through properly" has to take account of the predicted wars. I think there will be a China-Taiwan war in 2027 (next year!) because Xi's been saying that for years and the build-up is obvious. Then/contemporaneously there will be a Russo-Baltic war where Putin tries to join up to Kaliningrad. We need an amphibious landing capability just on general principles.

And we don't have any of it.

The Army is buggered because of Ajax and Challenger III. The Navy is buggered because the carriers don't have catapults and arrestor wires, and we don't have the necessary support vessels. I'm sure the Air Force are doing something interesting but nobody cares.

We are still flying AEW/AWACS aircraft despite the fact the concept is obsolete and has migrated to satellites. We don't have a Space Force. Our cyber capabilities are...not good? We haven't got to grips with drone warfare yet. We don't have enough indigenous manufacturing capabilities. We don't make enough missiles/bullets. We have an army with 71,000 people, which is nice but not big enough. Nobody is frightened of us.

In short, yes we do have to start panicking and get what we can now.

Can we fix Ajax? If not, get the Swedish thing or Puma or a tracked Boxer. Can we fix Challenger? If not get tanks from somebody else or just refurbish the old one. Can we fix the F35? If not, buy Mojave/Gray Eagles/Hiveminds and convert the carriers to drone carriers, or containerised missiles and convert them to arsenal ships.

Just been chatting to an American friend who has decided to pack up and leave. Sample size of one, but I wonder how many others are coming to the same conclusion?
Anecdotally, speaking to a few folks in a restaurant (different nationalities) and came to the concensus the USA is not the ideal country to visit right now. Not a very representative sample, but if they keep pursuing the 5 year social media history reveal policy a lot of World Cup fans will be in for a shock when they arrive in US airports this summer
Had a very similar restaurant experience recently.

We get a lot of US tourists here in the Cotswolds. Conversations with them usually begin with an apology for Trump. I invariably tell them that we Brits have nothing to shout about when it comes to poor electoral choices, and then things generally proceed in a normal friendly fashion.

    It’s ******* windy out there!

Some readings at weather stations on mainland Cornwall at 8pm:

    Cardinham 72 mph

    Camborne 83 mph
Some of the coastguard stations in Cornwall have been very "exciting".

    123mph at Padstow.

There's going to be a lot of damage.

The very worst of it is probably out at sea now or possibly in the Channel Islands.
    No small boats tonight.
Has the Padstow wind gust been verified? That seems exceptional even for this storm.

I suspect there will be very strong gusts in the Channel Islands and on the Isle of Wight later.

Kidnapped the leader of Venezuela and his wife, in contravention of international law, and essentially justified on the grounds that Venezuela’s oil belongs to the U.S.

Threatened to seize Greenland, reserving the right to use military force if necessary.

Seen the murder of 39 yo mother - slurred as “antifa” by the Vice President and other luminaries - by his quasi-paramilitary ICE goons.

1% of the Epstein files have been released.

God knows how much money the Trump family have received in bribery already since Jan 1.

You actually downplay it a bit - was listening on the radio and Vance repeatedly described her and what she did as terrorism.
You are being completely unfair. Detailed research and background checks have established that Renee once made a donation of $2.70 to Bernie Sanders and might well have been a lesbian. Surely 3 bullets to the head was a proportionate response?

    Evening all :)

Pending anything else, all we have regarding Iran is scattered reports.

The key point will be if and when the security forces "change sides" and move from supporting the Government to being complicit in its removal. If we're looking at a Romania 1989-style insurrection, it's likely the new leadership will come from within in the form of more moderate elements of the Government or administration itself, at least initially.

Will we see some form of intervention from Israel or the US "in support of" the protesters? Presumably they will have access to better information than most of us so will know if what is happening has evolved from sporadic protest to semi-organised insurrection.

The second question is whether this is the kind of protest which can be "bought off" by a combination of reforms and platitudes or whether this is a determined attempt to achieve lasting political change. That evolution can occur quickly under the right conditions.

Its an old coastguard station with decent equipment, but whether it will ever be official, I'm not sure:

Anecdotally, speaking to a few folks in a restaurant (different nationalities) and came to the concensus the USA is not the ideal country to visit right now. Not a very representative sample, but if they keep pursuing the 5 year social media history reveal policy a lot of World Cup fans will be in for a shock when they arrive in US airports this summer

Britain’s most senior military chief has warned Sir Keir Starmer that the Ministry of Defence is short of £28 billion over the next four years despite plans to boost spending, The Times can reveal

Hahaha. He can fuck right off and then fuck off again when he gets there. Get rid of a some golf courses, brass bands, horses and Spitfires.
Perhaps they could try spending money wisely.
Famine to feast will likely lead to enormous waste. You shouldn't do defence spending in a panic. You have to think it through properly. Assess the actual threat and timescales and build based on that, using synergies with other like-minded countries.

People who think ICE are disgusting white supremacist thugs have done so through their own analysis and have not been railroaded into protesting by Gavin Newsom.

This is surely the weirdest media coverage of an uprising ever. I get that there’s a blackout and it’s hard to get into the country as a journalist, but that’s not stopped intensive coverage of other protests in way less geopolitically important places in recent years.

There is scarcely more than a cursory 20 seconds on this in most bulletins, if that. We had sky news on for about an hour and a half earlier. Nothing. Why?

Gabriel Martinelli is emblematic of the shitty club that is Arsenal.

I wouldn't blame any Liverpool player who punched or castrated him.

Was he impeding an ICE officer?

Kidnapped the leader of Venezuela and his wife, in contravention of international law, and essentially justified on the grounds that Venezuela’s oil belongs to the U.S.

Threatened to seize Greenland, reserving the right to use military force if necessary.

People who think ICE are disgusting white supremacist thugs have done so through their own analysis and have not been railroaded into protesting by Gavin Newsom.

Variously, Tv stations, governors buildings and revolutionary guard buildings said to be on fire. And state surveillance camera network rumoured to have been hacked.

ICYMI: Fannie & Freddie have been adding billions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities & home loans to their balance sheets— boosting combined positions to more than $230 billion.

Trump is calling for them to buy $200 billion more.

There is a $450 billion cap. If they want to amend the limit Treasury & FHFA would need to get involved.

Whilst I take your point, your point consisted of a AI-generated picture of a woman with a white feather. This did not speak to my point that war is upcoming, we are woefully ill-prepared, and we need to start making expensive choices now.
"A woman". That's our Queen of Hearts.
Is it the Guinness Book of Records shagger?

    That sounds most uncomfortable.
