I feel your pain. I only got 1 leaflet from Con last time, 2 from the LDs, 1 from UKIP, and nothing from Labour. I'm hopeful even though it is not a target seat for them I get some more UKIP activity this time, they were pretty active for the Euro elections and I even missed a canvasser from them a few months back! I was shattered to have missed it, given no-one has ever bothered before.GIN1138 said:I live in a safe Con seat... Nobody cares about me!

But I suppose if you really want me to harm the tory cause with the usual suspects around here then maybe I should repeat my view that Osborne is doing a good job of managing the economy and Cameron is not a bad Prime Minister.
I think Osborne has been middling - I am most annoyed at the failure on deficit reduction, but it is not as though anyone else wanted to reduce it by any more than has been achieved, so I'm not furious about it - and I would prefer Cameron to continue on as our PM.

Blair was very impressive in his time. I saw him speak in 1995 and really charm a slightly sceptical midlands audience. He was also right in realising how crucial Mandelson was, in both 1997 and in baling out Gordon in 2010. I think Mandelson is the reason that we have a coalition rather than a Tory majority.kle4 said:I presume Blair must still have some people who will listen to him with respect, given how successful he was in the past, but it doesn't feel much like it thesedays.
Blair is now a liability (apart from Attlee it is reamarkeable how disliked within the party the electorally successful PMs are) but getting Mandelson on board for Ed could make all the difference. The guy is a serpent, but a very successful serpent.0 -

Flightpath is the ultimate political hypocrite. Always attacking others for what he claims are insults whilst doing exactly the same thing to his political enemies - which is basically anyone who is not a Cameroon Tory. His false horror at the supposed insults dished out to Pensioners is just another example of this.kle4 said:FPT

Granted I only grew to political awareness in the very late 90s/early 2000s, but Blair always put me off by seeming to be a thoroughly oily and smarmy individual. Frankly at the time I preferred Brown, inasmuch as I was aware of him at any rate. But I cannot but presume you are correct about him, even considering what I'm told was the paucity of effective opposition at the time.foxinsoxuk said:

Blair's net rating with Ipsos-Mori when he stood down as PM was minus 27
Ed's rating last month was minus 35.
Can you explain how Ed Miliband managed to be even more unpopular than Blair, without lying about invading a foreign country and killing 100,000 natives?0 -
@Alanbrooke
Probably more scarred I would say. ;-)0 -
I saw Blair speak in New York, sitting at a table full of Americans. They loved him, and genuinely couldn't understand why he was no longer prime minister. While it sounds ridiculous, they regarded him in the same vein of Thatcher, Reagan, or Roosevelt.0

Everyone knows that Blair and Mandelson are tricksters so the tricks don't work anymore.
Blair was a very good liar (which made him very successful in politics initially), and Mandelson was very good at controlling the flow and direction of said lies to the old media.
However times have changed, Blair is in the political gutter for a decade now after the public had had enough of his lies and Newspapers&TV are less dominant in the media, also many of Mandelson's friends have retired so are of no use.0 -
Maybe. As we see with Thatcher, they can keep that up for a long long time, too. If someone tries to get my vote by trying to scare me or please me by going on about her, I may scream.Danny565 said:

I was staying in a Backpackers hostel in Borneo in 1990 with a group of mostly British and European travellers. The Labourites hate him because he steamrolled the party.
The LD's hate him because of his foreign policy.

Yeah, I think people do have memories of the country being in a reasonably OK state when he was leader, foreign policy aside. Very few people are enthusiastic about Blair in the way that many people still are about Thatcher, but I really don't think he has all that many "haters" even though those haters he does have are very vocal.TheScreamingEagles said:From 2011 - Ipsos Mori finds Margaret Thatcher is seen as the most capable leader of the last 30 years though Tony Blair is more likeable

Marginals are very different. We're on our third round of canvassing every street since the last election (though obviously not everyone is in each time, and some are mysteriously never in). It does give a good feel for movements in sentiment - you can feel tides moving in and out. In my experience, around 75% nearly always say the same thing (give or take priods of don't knowing) over a 20-year period, but 25% are genuinely more fluid, and occasionally you get an abrupt switch when someone who was always X suddenly hates X because of one issue, often something quite apparently inconsequential like a supermarket getting planning permission or a councillor not answering a letter.kle4 said:

While not a ukip supporter and a conservative voter in 2010 I could not possibly vote for someone who thought that encryption policy was good. It merely showed the man knows bugger all and it would wreak havoc. It is worse than milibrands energy price cap for its sheer idiocy. The man is an idiot who employs advisors who's stupidity is truly legendaryTheScreamingEagles said:

"The documents obtained by ICIJ are based on data originally smuggled away by a former HSBC employee-turned-whistleblower, Hervé Falciani, and handed to French authorities in 2008. Le Monde obtained material from the French tax authority investigation into the files and then shared the French tax authority’s material with ICIJ with the agreement that ICIJ would pull together a team of journalists from multiple countries that could sift through the data from all angles.
ICIJ enlisted more than 140 journalists from 45 countries, including reporters from Le Monde, the BBC, The Guardian, 60 Minutes, Süddeutsche Zeitung and more than 45 other media organizations."

The point to be made is how the EC had a small role in the scandal. One man's love of the EC distracted him from his main job. It led him to raise money illegally to fund his EC work and he overlooked a letter from the people he should have cared about.

They are in the main not economically conservative, what is traditionally called classic liberals (such as Thatcher). The clique running the LDs are, but they are a minority. Most of the LD party are state interventionist bordering on socialism, aka "social democrats" closer to New Labour (economically). The question is whether New Lab joins the LDs or the 2/3 social LDs join Labour?Danny565 said:
But the space they occupy (economically conservative, but socially liberal and pro-Europe at the same time) has very little support outside of a few metrosexual City bankers.rcs1000 said:

2. MacShane clearly focused his main attention on the EC when in Parliament or away visiting europe. He would gladly write articles against eurosceptics or speak up in any debate on that subject. Or even fly off on european meetings even after he was not the Europe Minister.
So whilst engaged in all these things he was distracted by the EC and overlooked the cesspit of abuse going on in his constituency.
