Sky reporting 4 more prisoners are being sought by the police

    Details apparently to follow

To be honest this is just going to be on repeat virtually everyday

That could be a problem for Sky. They should maybe hive it off into a separate show ("PrisonerWatch") from the main news so that people who are particularly interested don't miss anything.
Sounds like you want the story to go away

I think that Lammy is facing a serious problem with not only the way he responded at the dispatch box, but also as he fled the chamber despite the Speaker's request for him to make a statement

Furthermore, he has compounded the problem with contradictory information and apparently a cabinet minister is not all all happy with him and his performance to date

Ultimately, Starmer may need to make him the scapegoat, before appointing his successor to deal with the issue without Lammy's baggage

It comes down to what I said earlier, we are pouring tens of billions into an unreformed NHS, out of control spending on pensions and benefits, and 100 billion on debt interest leaving absolutely nothing for dealing with this very important, and politically so, problem
Why do you think this didn't happen under the Tories?

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-53221983

That was a really nasty one that you never heard about.

I have another 800 or so examples for you too during the Tory years.*

    * Granted the frequency has been worse in the 18 months since April 2024.
If you read my morning post you will see I accepted it happened under the Tories [ and coalition ]and it has increased under Labour, but it would not have developed into the crises for the government if Lammy hadn't made a horlicks of PMQs and the Speaker's request

I also explained the reasons why successive governments have failed to invest in the prison service as you can see from my post

This problem is a self inflicted wound by Lammy which I think even you accept

Lammy had a mare of a PMQs. Not least because he lost against Cartledge who asked the wrong question five times.

If Lammy's ambition to become Prime Minister isn't dead in the water after that and his subsequent performance, he needs to have a rethink.

Joey Barton was charged with 12 counts, found guilty on 6 and not guilty on 6.
He was found guilty by a jury of his peers, who could have chosen to agree with those who think the charges were absurd and dismissed them all. I wonder why they didn't?

Because the law criminalized something that should not have been criminalized.

    Quite

The libel law in this country is bad enough. Look at its history.

I tend to assume that anyone rich and aggressive enough to take a libel case to court is a bad'un. Especially if they win. If they retain Carter Fuck.....

Because the sad, bleak and true truth is that ultimately the British don't really believe in free speech.
Generally speaking, the more someone boasts of their support for free speech (like, say, JD Vance or Elon Musk), the less likely they are to actually believe in. What they mean is, they want more speech of which they approve. That the speech that they want freed.

Yes, while I’m an advocate of free speech and would passionately defend the right of people to express views I do not personally agree with, I really can’t see why that should extend to defending the right to call someone you don’t like a paedo.

Seems the Lib Dems shadow is equally scathing of Lammy

I'd have thought it's more about a creaking CJS than about David Lammy. Which is a shame really. If he was the problem he could just be replaced and these incidents would immediately stop.

At the Grammar School I attended we had a choice at the end of the year at which we were 14. Latin, History and Geography or Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Plus, of course English, Maths and two languages.
Somewhat to the Headmaster's annoyance I chose the Science option, and other than the rather primitive Latin associated with prescription writing I've had no contact with the language since. That was a 73 years ago!

Watching Rick Wilson's The Elephant in the Room he suggests the photo in the thread header is indicative of Trump's indifference to suffering and is a metaphor for his indifference to the shutdown.

A Great Gatsby themed party whilst SNAP and Food Aid is closed down is very Marie Antoinette.

Schumer is expected to lay out the Democratic proposal to end the shutdown, in a show of unity within the caucus

    More on the Dem offer:

—Clean CR paired with 3-bill minibus
    —Clean one-year Obamacare extension
—Establish bipartisan committee for long-term Obamacare negotiations

Schumer says this is a reasonable offer

Republicans are almost certain to reject it. One R just noted that all this does is force Congress to address it around the midterms next year

Dream scenario for Dems to be able to talk about health care right before the elections

Lammy wasn't very good but his PMQs performance was no Peppa Pig speech.

PMQs demonstrated that Lammy can't think on his feet. Peppa Pig demonstrated Johnson was unfit for office. You were still on his side when the Peppa Pig event took place.

Yep, at my grammar school everyone was streamed after the first year into four streams: top stream became 2A (Arts) then 2S (Science), 2T (Technical) and 2X (the rest). Only the Arts stream studied Latin and Classics. Fortunately I ended up in the Science stream.

    I agree.

Lammy has been in his current job for the political equivalent of about 15 minutes. He probably barely knows the ins and outs of how the prison system works, let alone being personally responsible for the failings of its current setup.

At a guess I'd put 75% of failings on the past Tory governments, 24% on his Labour predecessor in the Justice departments and 1% on Lammy. You can't just fix complex problems in large systems overnight, especially not as an outsider to the department.

The FBI informant convicted of lying to the Bureau about a fake bribery scheme involving the Bidens has been quietly released from prison just months into a six-year sentence—raising concern he could be pardoned by Donald Trump any moment.

Alexander Smirnov, who has multiple business ties to Trumpworld, was sentenced days before Trump became president. He had pleaded guilty to fabricating a story that former President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, had received millions in bribes from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, as well as to a $2 million-plus tax evasion offense.

Yet despite Smirnov being judged a flight risk, with ties to Russian intelligence and foreign assets, the U.S.-Israeli citizen has been mysteriously missing from prison for at least the past four months.

He must be really wishing he was still Foreign Secretary.

The invisible man who is Prisons Minister has been in position from the start of this government. I am not sure how he is escaping any responsbility or accountability, particularly as the rate of these incorrect releases have doubled under Labour, so its a bit more than can't just fix it, its getting a lot worse.

Justice Secretary David Lammy has been accused of 'hiding an even bigger scandal' after another foreign criminal went on the run – this time by walking out of an open prison.

Police have been unable to locate violent offender Ola Abimbola who vanished from HMP Ford more than three weeks ago.

Labour has been repeatedly warned that unsuitable prisoners were being transferred to open jails, such as Ford, as ministers devised increasingly desperate measures to ease the jail overcrowding crisis.

Abimbola disappeared from the jail, near Arundel, West Sussex, on October 16 and has not been seen since.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15270223/David-Lammy-accused-bigger-scandal-foreign-criminal-abscond-released-open-prison.html

Ola Abimbola, 36, who was jailed for 24 years for conspiracy to kidnap, GBH, blackmail and false imprisonment, was transferred early to Ford open prison in Arundel, Sussex, under new rules introduced by Labour to tackle overcrowding in more secure “closed” jails.

I presume Claminty Lammy wasn't "fully informed" about this case either....

    Jesus, its even worse,

Kaddour-Cherif now faces at least four trials for burglary, knife possession, assaulting an emergency worker and handling stolen bank cards. The Telegraph revealed on Thursday that he had at least eight previous court appearances for offences, including possession of a knife, burglary, assaulting a police officer and exposing himself in a public place.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/11/07/migrant-sex-offender-rearrested-after-accidental-release/

Remember this individual was already here illegally 5 years ago after overstaying his visa. How many crimes does he have to commit to get actually deported? How does he not get automatically removed as an overstayer the first time he got convicted.

I do, yes. Just as you want it running every day for however long there's a Labour government. Such is the mindset of partisans in politics.
Seems the Lib Dems shadow is equally scathing of Lammy

And I do not want these criminals on the streets nor does the public

Lammy's problem is all of his own making
I'd have thought it's more about a creaking CJS than about David Lammy. Which is a shame really. If he was the problem he could just be replaced and these incidents would immediately stop.

He must be really wishing he was still Foreign Secretary.
Probably feels like he's been stitched up.

I appreciate Starmer is not flavour of the month here, or indeed anywhere, but this Regulation was passed in May 2024. Starmer became PM in July 2024. Perhaps learn to use a calendar before making these points?
That regulation does bugger up my plan to buy super grade plutonium with suitcases of cash and crypto, though.
I'd hoped it would be a Brexit dividend for you.
Do you watch the Mission Impossible documentaries?

Six years of unacceptable Labour chaos!

    More on the Dem offer:

—Clean CR paired with 3-bill minibus
    —Clean one-year Obamacare extension
—Establish bipartisan committee for long-term Obamacare negotiations

Schumer says this is a reasonable offer

Republicans are almost certain to reject it. One R just noted that all this does is force Congress to address it around the midterms next year

Dream scenario for Dems to be able to talk about health care right before the elections

The Republicans have a majority in both Houses of Congress, so I really don't understand why they can't pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling.

To be honest this is just going to be on repeat virtually everyday

It has been going on regularly for some years. The media then got interested when a high profile case got released (and, for some outlets, he was an immigrant, so they were more eager to report on him). Now people getting mistakenly released has become the news story du jour.

That article was better covered by him in chapter III "Human Rights and Wrongs" of his book "Trials of the State", which was in turn his novelisation (sic) of his 2019 Reith Lectures (available on BBC Sounds or YouTube). I thoroughly recommend both, and his following book "Law In A Time of Crisis". I haven't read his third book yet but it is next on the list.

Schumer is expected to lay out the Democratic proposal to end the shutdown, in a show of unity within the caucus

    More on the Dem offer:

—Clean CR paired with 3-bill minibus
    —Clean one-year Obamacare extension
—Establish bipartisan committee for long-term Obamacare negotiations

Schumer says this is a reasonable offer

Republicans are almost certain to reject it. One R just noted that all this does is force Congress to address it around the midterms next year

Dream scenario for Dems to be able to talk about health care right before the elections

    https://x.com/AndrewDesiderio/status/1986883625426547124

The Republicans have a majority in both Houses of Congress, so I really don't understand why they can't pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling.
The whole thing seems bonkers to me to be honest.

I just dont understand why the Dems offer things that, if agreed, would help GOP in 2026 because it stops them doing silly shit to their hard core rural supporters.
Because they care about the welfare of Americans?

Someone on PB recommended 'Death by Lightning' on Netflix earlier.

Thanks - I'm really enjoying it. Superb. Right up PB political nerd street.

I'm looking forward to the sequel "Death by Bongo". Casting should be interesting.

Most jurors I imagine take matters seriously and follow directions about what the law is even if they think a particular law is stupid, so jury nullification is probably very rare, and as such the charges could easily be absurd and yet proven beyond reasonable doubt at the same time.

    @TOPPING (fpt)

"Let me help. Most of them - units dealing with elderly patients - are fucking useless. Because actually, they don't really care whether the elderly patient survives or not. Not really. Of course there are individuals who are great in the NHS but institutionally perhaps because there is precious little accountability (and then only when something "obvious" has gone wrong), it doesn't matter if your 85-yr old aunt lives or dies. Or is neglected. Or isn't fed properly. Or whose bed isn't changed regularly. Or who is or isn't given the correct medication.

I challenge everyone on PB to ask 10 friends about treatment an elderly relative has received at the hands of the NHS and a significant proportion of them will have shocking stories. But of course the ones that have received great care (and of course plenty do) will write letters, call phone-in programmes and bang saucepans to say how marvellous the NHS is.
    "

And into this system the government proposes to introduce an AD law which will create an obvious, glaring and gigantic conflict of interest and multiple opportunities (pressures even) for its staff to "suggest" or "coerce" (because who will find out - all effective external scrutiny having been removed) such people into suicide to save money for the NHS. For those who think I am exaggerating listen to the answers Stephen Kinnock, the Palliative Care Minister, has been giving to the House of Lords Committee this week. As well as lying about what the Equality Impact Assessment said, his answers are utterly chilling in their lack of humanity for precisely the people @TOPPING is describing and, indeed, people like me with a terminal illness.

Trump has replaced Biden's portrait in the Whitehouse with a photograph of an auto-pen. With what should the next Democratic President (it might be a while) replace Trump's portrait?

Oh. Will senate Republicans obey the King?

    @fintwitter.bsky.social‬

Trump on truth social The United States Senate should not leave town until they have a Deal to end the Democrat Shutdown. If they can’t reach a Deal, the Republicans should terminate the Filibuster, IMMEDIATELY, and take care of our Great American Workers!
