The fairytale of New York? – politicalbetting.com

Tomorrow sees the election for Mayor of New York and it would be quite the fairytale of New York if Andrew Cuomo wins given the current polling, the fact he lost in the primary to Zohran Mamdani and more pertinently the reasons he had to resign in disgrace as Governor of New York in 2021.

I liked this take on Mamdami:

Mamdani is simultaneously remarkable in how well he is performing despite being a fucking socialist, and in how poorly he is performing despite running against a criminal and a lunatic who are splitting the opposition vote between them.

Those two things surely explain one another, no?

Not that I disagree with either.

Of course foreign interference in elections is bad if it’s someone like Musk. It’s okay when they do it.

And that rain probably started when a Muslim scared a butterfly in Indonesia which flapped its wings.

I believe Russia gets refined products from Belarus. Be terrible if Belarus had a "smoking at work" incident...

Although if Russia takes it to the point there are Belarussian shortages/price hikes, that is only going to fuel (pun intended) the growing unrest against Lukashenko. A change in the regime in Minsk to one friendly towards Kyiv would greatly change the forces available to Ukraine to defend the east.

Obviously a whole lot of other considerations but from a simplistic distance Mamdani gives every indication of not being an arsehole while Cuomo gives every indication that he is. Fair to say Cuomo has played a bad hand badly, his campaign and social media has shown all the warmth, nous and deft touch of another Andrew in the news at the moment.

Whilst I am 100% behind Ukraine, the possibility of a change in the regime in Minsk would only come from a collapse in Russia. Belorussia is 100% a Russian puppet. If Lukashenko fell out of a window, he'd simply be replaced by someone equally supportive of Russia (hand picked by Putin himself) or even just simply annex the country. It's defacto Russia anyway.

In a nutshell, the first five seconds of that clip is why I think Mamdani will win. Yes he may be a socialist, but he is also funny.

Trump is also funny, and I think for a large proportion of voters (sadly) being funny is more important than having realistic solutions.

After all his attacks on Mamdani bouncing off harmlessly, Cuomo’s latest cunning stunt is a bitching match with Curtis Sliwa whose dumb voters should be backing big Andy according to him.
Candidates saying they’ll work for all residents of a country/city/constituency should always be taken with a pinch of salt but such claims from Cuomo seem particularly empty.

Because he didn't need to. If Ukraine had kept their Putin-friendly corrupt leader then it would have freed Putin to concentrate on Moldova, or the central Asian Republics.

    So much for the Tomahawks

Trump 'not really' considering Tomahawk transfers to Ukraine, for now.

When asked on Nov. 2 by reporters if his administration is considering sending Kyiv Tomahawks, U.S. President Donald Trump responded: “No, not really… things can change, but at this moment I’m not.”

    A few things here:

If Musk or Trump or De Niro or Taylor Swift want to pontificate on UK politics of course they should be, and are, able to do so. However, they are then open to criticism and ridicule the same as if any other person enters the sphere.

If they want to contribute millions, or in Musks case talk of $100m, to a UK political party, that should not be allowed. They are not the same thing at all.

Same applies to Brits, including Corbyn, campaigning in the US.

Well the betting (1.05) says Mamdani is a cert. I hope so because it will show the ugly racist right that they don't own the populist space. You can whip up some fervour and offer simplistic solutions without demonising anybody except rich people. It's not really my thing, I'm Mr Mainstream, but elections are about choices and in this case, like the song goes, Mamdani, Mamdani, Mamdani is good enough for me.

Plod out in force all over the railway network this morning, special announcements being made and emblazoned on the booking app etc… Bit hard to understand why since they have assured everyone there is no evidence the attack was terrorism. So either they’ve made that statement prematurely or there’s lots of performative bo-lox going on today.

Standard practice is to ignore it. It didn't happen.

Daily Mail has been following this procedure since the 1930s when it supported the fascists. Works perfectly.

While the city itself is pretty liberal, there is in fact, quite a lot of rather right wing voters in the suburbs.

My guess is that Cuomo is trying (in desperation) for differential turnout in those areas.

So either they’ve made that statement prematurely or there’s lots of performative bo-lox going on today.

They had a metal detector installed at Ilford Lizzie Line last week, but only for a few days.

Performative bo-lox is what a significant percentage of the population want after such an event. It wouldn't make any difference to me either, but I do understand why it does to some, and therefore as long as it is not over the top or sustained for too long am in favour of it.

FPT: "Benpointer- I know we said most Russian oil exports are crude rather than refined oil but if all their refineries end up being taken out where will the Russians themselves get refined oil from? Or do those T72s run on crude oil?"

You have to wonder why Putin didn't annexe Belarussia, at least before trying for Ukraine.

    I’m not surprised.

But then again, I wouldn’t have expected the Biden admin to send them either. An American (former) (semi) strategic weapon hitting targets in Russia?

My Russian step-mother remembers the near demonisation of American Tomahawks in the 1980s. During that battle of wills between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, it was portrayed as a sneaky, nasty, terrible first strike weapon compared to the decent, straight forward RSD-10 (SS-20).

Given that Putin & Co. are living in 1983, in their heads.. The Glory Days, when we were Young… it would be a step too far, I think.

The name of the country is Belarus- "Bell-a-roos"

The Chancellor is considering a blizzard of measures targeting the 'wealthy' as she scrambles to drum up huge sums.

Treasury officials are said to have been ordered to find ways of getting more money out of everyone with incomes of more than £45,000 a year.

Insiders claim that only Brits below that threshold - the bottom two-thirds of earners - are being defined as 'working people' to receive protection from Labour's tax assault.

That effectively brands the top third of earners as 'wealthy' – encompassing jobs such as HGV drivers, teachers and head chefs at the Wagamama restaurant chain.

However, there are reports today that horse racing could be spared from expected taxes on gambling. Instead the focus is likely to be on slot machines and online gaming.'

'Anthony Williams' is a decidedly British name, although the English patriots could decide to console themselves with the thought that the accused may be of Welsh origin.

A 32-year-old from Peterborough has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of actual bodily harm and one count of possession of bladed article following a stabbing attack on a train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, British Transport Police says.

He is named as Anthony Williams.

    More on this shortly.

The second man arrested has been released without charge.
I wonder if the second man was in fact a 'victim' who was trying disarm Williams. But, because he's mixed race.....
I think a passenger mistakenly identified him as the attacker. Possibly his colour?
IIRC our discussion as the news started to come through was around reports of 'two coloured men' fighting.

Or something similar to that, anyway.

Did anyone ever think the asrsehoel would give them to Ukraine , no way he was going to upset his buddy.

  • Can somebody answer a Vanilla question?

When my cursor hovers over the Like icon, it sometimes gives the names of the posters and sometimes not. Is it supposed to, and is there any way of achieving some consistency in this?

On the main PB site, you can't see who's "liked" you when you "hover", but you can on the Vanilla site.

    Compare:

Thanks Sunil, but I rarely use the Vanilla site. It's on the main site that I have noticed the inconsistency.

Doesn't matter much. I'm not preoccupied with Likes. I just check occasionally to make sure I'm not appealing too much to the many lawyers we have on here.
